In a small village not far from a desert, there lived a young businessman called James. He was quite successful and owned many things, but he still felt unhappy most of the time. The reason was that he had to face endless problems and challenges every day.
One day, a wise old man came to the village. He brought with him 100 camels. People all said that the old man was very clever and could solve almost any problem.
James heard about this and went to visit the old man at once. He said to him, “I am really unhappy with my life. I always have worries about my business, troubles with my family, and problems with my health. Can you please tell me how to make all these bad things go away?”
The old man smiled gently and answered, “I will give you the answer tomorrow morning. But first, could you help me do a small thing?” James agreed right away.
Then the old man asked James to look after all 100 camels for the whole night. He told James that he must make sure every camel sat down and rested well and then James himself could go to sleep.
The next morning, the old man met James and asked how his night was. James looked sad and said, “I did not sleep at all last night. No matter how hard I tried, I just could not make all the camels sit down together. When I tried to make some camels sit on one side, a few other camels would stand up on the other side.”
The old man nodded and said, “That is true. Last night, you could see that some camels sat down by themselves. Some others sat down after you tried a little. But many camels still did not sit down, even when you tried very hard. If you had waited a little longer, you would have found that some camels, which did not sit at first, finally sat down by themselves later.”
James listened carefully and nodded his head.
The old man went on saying, “Problems in life are just like these camels. Some problems will be solved by themselves with time. Some problems can be solved if you put in your effort. And there are also some problems that cannot be solved even if you try your best. For those problems, just leave them to time. When the right time comes, these problems will come to an end on their own.”
After hearing these words, James suddenly understood everything. This lesson completely changed the way he looked at the difficulties and challenges in his life.
13. Why did James feel unhappy most of the time?
A. Because he was not successful enough in running his business.
B. Because he was troubled by plenty of problems every day.
C. Because he didn’t make enough money from his business.
D. Because he wanted to give up his business completely.
14. How might James have felt that night?
A. Afraid. B. Annoyed. C. Bored. D. Excited.
15. How did the old man make James understand his trouble?
A. By letting him care for camels and learn a lesson.
B. By telling him to give up all his business and worries.
C. By solving all his business problems for him in person.
D. By explaining the scientific reasons behind problems.
16. What’s the best title for the text?
A. A Wise Old Man B. A Sleepless Night
C. Problems Are Just Like Camels D. James’s Search for Happiness
C
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Almost everyone has heard of this sentence, and many people eat apples every day to stay fit and healthy. But not long ago, scientists carried out a new study. They wanted to find out if this old saying really makes sense.
Matthew Davis works in the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan in America. He led a group of research workers to do this study. The team asked 8,399 people to finish a survey. All of them needed to answer many questions about their eating habits and physical conditions. Among all these people, 753 people ate apples every day, while the rest 7,646 people hardly ate apples at all.
Then the researchers collected information from the two groups. They asked how many times each person went to see doctors or bought medicine in pharmacies every year. At first, they got a surprising result: people who ate apples daily were 27% less likely to buy medicine from pharmacists.
However, scientists soon found more important facts. Many things can change how often people visit doctors, such as body weight, race, education background and medical insurance. After they took all these influences into consideration, the big difference between apple lovers and non-apple eaters was gone. Finally, the study showed that people eating apples every day visited doctors just as often as those who never ate apples.
To put it simply, eating an apple every day may only help you stay away from pharmacists instead of doctors.
Davis talked about this study with USA Today newspaper. He explained that the research never tells us apples are bad for health. He also said we still cannot make sure that people who seldom see doctors are truly healthier than others.
Most doctors share the same opinion that apples are great for our bodies. They have plenty of Vitamin C. Besides, apples also have a little Vitamin A, calcium and iron, all of which are necessary for our health.
Even so, Steven Zeisel from the Nutrition Research Institute at the University of North Carolina told NBC News that one single apple cannot bring huge changes to our health. It only works well when we eat apples as part of a balanced and healthy daily diet.
The old saying is thought to come from Wales in the 1800s. Apples, which can be stored for a long time, were likely one of the few fruits that were available throughout the year, according to NBC News.
17. What does the underlined phrase “makes sense” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. is difficult B. is reasonable C. is popular D. is traditional
18. According to the third paragraph, what surprising result did the researchers get at first?
A. Apple eaters seemed to buy medicine less often than others.
B. Non-apple eaters took 27 percent more medicine than apple eaters.
C. Apple eaters hardly needed to go to hospital or see doctors.
D. Non-apple eaters were much healthier than apple eaters.
19. After considering other influencing factors, scientists found that ________.
A. apple eaters were much healthier than non-apple eaters
B. eating apples was the main reason for keeping healthy
C. one’s education background had little influence on personal health
D. there was no big difference between the two groups in doctor visits
20. Why does the writer mention Steven Zeisel’s words?
A. To stress the importance of balanced daily diets.
B. To further explain the true role of apples in health.
C. To support the result of Matthew Davis’s research.
D. To introduce more advantages of apples for the body.

In China, not all drifting takes place on a professional racetrack—some impressive drifting skills are shown on a traditional dragon boat! Diejiao dragon boat drifting, which is a special local folk sport, enjoys great popularity in Foshan. In order to welcome the coming Dragon Boat Festival, local players keep attending night training so that they can make full preparations for the official competition.
Diejiao’s dragon boat race, which is widely known as the “F1 on Water”, is one of the most breathtaking and challenging water sports across the country. These 25-meter-long dragon boats dash forward at high speed through narrow rivers that are only 3 to 8 meters wide. Since the boats can complete sudden sharp turns perfectly, they create a thrilling and eye-catching scene for every audience who watches the race.
Patrick Köllmer, who is a famous German video blogger, traveled to Foshan in person to experience the unique local dragon boat culture. He actively joined the team’s night training programs and deeply felt the extraordinary charm of Diejiao dragon boat drifting. After witnessing the wonderful and exciting boat performance, he spoke highly of this special sport and claimed that it was much more thrilling than Formula 1. He was most moved by the players’ teamwork and strong will during the whole training process.
This special training experience let Patrick gain a deeper understanding of the spirit behind Guangdong’s dragon boat culture, including teamwork and persistence. My personality and my teenage problem
My personality has not only shaped who I am but also caused the teenage problem I face.
I am a quiet and shy person. I prefer staying alone to talking with others. However, this personality brings me a big problem. I find it hard to make new friends and express my ideas in class. As a result, I often miss many chances to show myself. Sometimes I feel lonely and stressed.
To solve this problem, I plan to take action. First, I will join some school clubs to meet more people. Second, I will try to speak up at least once every day. Even if I make mistakes, I will not give up. I believe that being brave can help me enjoy my school life more.
