Jo was the first to wake. She remembered her mother’s promise, and, putting her hand under her pillow, drew out a little red-covered book. She loved it. She woke Meg up and asked her to see what was under her pillow. A green-covered book appeared. Then Beth and Amy woke, to find their little books also.
“Girls,” said Meg seriously, “Mother wants us to read and love these books, and we must begin at once. I shall read a little every morning, for I know it will do me good. ”
And then they opened the new books and read. The rooms were very quiet, and the winter sunshine shone in to touch the serious faces with a Christmas greeting.
“Where is Mother?” asked Meg, as she ran down to thank her for their gifts, half an hour later.
“Some poor men come for help, and Mrs. March went straight off to see what was needed,” replied Hannah, who was considered more as a friend than a servant.
“She will be back soon, so we must get everything ready,” said Meg, looking over the presents which were collected in a basket, ready to be given to their mother at the proper time.
“Why, where is Amy’s bottle of Cologne (古龙香水)?” she wondered.
“She took it out a minute ago,” replied Jo.
“There’s Mother. Hide the basket, quick!” cried Jo, as the door opened, and steps sounded in the hall.
Amy hurried in, and looked rather ashamed when she saw her sisters all waiting for her.
“Where have you been, and what are you hiding behind you?” asked Meg, surprised to see that lazy Amy had been out so early.
“You see, I felt ashamed of my present, so I ran round the corner and changed the little bottle for a big one and I gave all my money for it; and I’m truly trying not to be selfish any more.”
Another bang of the street door sent the girls to the table.
“Merry Christmas, Marmee! Thank you for our books; we love them,” they said together.
“Merry Christmas, little daughters! I’m glad you like the books. But I want to say one word before we sit down. Not far from here lies a poor woman with a little new-born baby. They were suffering hunger and cold. My girls, will you give them your breakfast as a Christmas present?”
They were all unusually hungry, having waited for nearly an hour, and for a minute no one spoke; only a minute, for Jo said, “I’m so glad you came before we began!”
(From Little Women)

In the digital era, where social media is flooded with ceaseless sharing, Lina, a 26-year-old resident from Hangzhou, stands as a striking example. She regularly posts artworks and travel snapshots on Instagram but seldom replies to comments or engages in private conversations. “I love sharing fragments (碎片) of my life, yet building deep connections with strangers feels emotionally exhausting”, she admits. Lina’s attitude represents a growing trend among today’s youth: light socializing, a pattern that prioritizes self-expression over intensive emotional bonds in the virtual world.
Sociologist Min Li observes that social media, once a hub (中心) for developing relationships, has changed into a “self-showcase” platform for the younger generation. Instead of seeking active interactions, they share content like scenic photos or daily routines, with little expectation of feedback. Actions such as casually unfollowing, blocking strangers or using 24-hour disappearing posts show their wish to avoid burdensome “emotional labor” from shallow virtual ties. This shift comes from their desire to escape the overwhelming pressure from empty digital interactions.
While critics dismiss light socializing as a sign of “emotional coldness”, it actually reflects a thoughtful adaptation. Psychologist Lu Chen argues that by embracing this approach, young people regain control over their online space—sharing freely without the anxiety of meeting others’ expectations. Even social platforms have evolved to meet this need: many now offer “silent modes”, such as hidden interaction records and one-way posting features, acknowledging the widespread acceptance of light socializing.
In a world tightly bound by digital connections, light socializing strikes a delicate balance between self-expression and privacy protection. It is not a refusal of social bonds but a wise pursuit of healthier, more autonomous online engagement. This trend shows the younger generation’s maturity in safeguarding their mental well-being, representing a forward-looking and thoughtful approach to modern social interactions.
33. What does Lina do on social media?
A. She only posts artworks. B. She shares life but skips deep chats.
C. She never replies to comments. D. She focuses on building deep online bonds.
34. According to Min Li, what has social media become for young people now?
A. A center for deep relationships. B. A platform for personal display.
C. A tool to seek frequent interactions. D. A space to reduce pressure by virtual ties.
35. What can we infer about “light socializing”?
A. It encourages safe online engagement. B. It makes young people emotionally cold.
C. It relies mainly on platforms’ silent modes. D. It abandons social bonds to protect mental health.
36. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Keep Silent Mode On B. Keep the Digital Distance
C. Social Media: “Self-showcase” Platform D. Emotional Coldness: Online Life’s Secret
D
If a stranger (陌生人) knocked on your door asking to use your phone, would you help? How about lending them five dollars for the bus, if they said they’d return and pay you back?
Nowadays, many people find it hard to trust strangers. A recent study found that our ability to trust strangers may be more than just a social or psychological characteristic—it could come from our DNA. This is important, in fact, as it turns out that trusting people might live longer and healthier lives compared to those who like to doubt others. ①________
②________ Two main theories have appeared to explain why some people are more trusting than others. One suggests trust is a stable characteristic shaped by early life experiences. The other thinks it’s influenced by what a person always thinks about the world around them. We can easily guess the answer to the question “Would you say that most people can be trusted?” would depend on whether you’d been robbed the day before or if you’d had your missing wallet returned.
③________ This is where the recent research comes in. Edgerton, a researcher from Lund University, and his teammates have been doing research about trust. In their most recent study, with 33,882 Danish blood donors, they found a single gene (基因)—PLPP4, which has a strong connection to the personality of trusting others, and that the PLPP4 gene explained 6% of the difference in social trust among the people in the study. If you take two people who have similar education and life experiences, this gene alone could account for 6% of the difference in how much they trust others.
④________ They believe that the PLPP4 gene may soften our “fight-or-flight” survival response (反应). If our fight-or-flight system is less strong when we meet new people, it makes sense that trusting others could greatly improve our health. Indeed, if trusting others acts as something against stress, it may lower the risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
As people continue to uncover the mysteries of trust, one thing is clear: understanding its genetic roots may hold the key to developing healthier communities in the world.
37. Why does the writer begin the passage with questions?
A. To test the readers’ sense of safety.
B. To show how dangerous it is to trust strangers.
C. To challenge readers to make a difficult choice.
D. To introduce the topic by connecting to readers’ own lives.
38. According to paragraph 3, what might make you trust people less today?
A. If you had a happy childhood.
B. If you once faced difficulties at work.
C. If you were not educated well at a young age.
D. If you were treated in a dishonest way by others.
39. The following sentence can be put at ________.
What makes some people more trusting?
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
40. What can we know from the passage?
A. We should trust strangers more so that we can live longer.
B. Trust may come from our body and is good for our health.
C. The PLPP4 gene may lead to our natural fear response to strangers.
D. People’s trust levels are mainly shaped by their childhood experiences.

Freshman Matthew Martin has enjoyed playing sports, and forming friendships throughout his first year in high school. As he finished Grade 8, Martin started the search for his high school and after applying to Jesuit High School, Martin’s father brought up the idea of Le Valle and thought it would be a good fit to go there. After spending time with Le Valle schoolmate Will Koch, Martin fell in love with the community.
This year, Martin played on Le Valle’s golf team and soccer team. While the sports themselves were nothing new, he made the leap from recreational soccer to playing competitively and was on a golf team for the first time rather than competing individually. Competing on these two teams taught Martin the value of hard work and the importance of not cutting corners, both in athletics and life. “Always make sure everything gets done and make sure it gets done right, 100% complete,” Martin said, “quality over quantity.”
In previous years, Martin noted that he wouldn’t ask as many questions and would be on the quiet side in class, but thanks to all his teachers this year, he asked more questions and felt more comfortable engaging in discussion. During and after class, Martin could be found as one of two freshmen in math teacher Mr. Linus Oey’s Honors Algebra class. Martin said that although it was his hardest class, once he started asking questions and started to really engage and try his hardest, he felt much more comfortable and confident with the class.
Martin has many pieces of advice he wishes he could tell himself on the first day of school this year and to the incoming freshmen. “Just relax, have fun. Just make sure you try your hardest no matter what,” Martin said. “Be sure to join clubs or sports. That’s seriously how you can meet somebody, like I’ve met so many best friends through soccer and through the soccer camp. ”

例文
Never give up
Life is full of difficulties. In my opinion, never giving up means sticking to our goals even when they seem impossible.
Once I failed my English speech competition. I was nervous and forgot my lines. I felt terrible and planned to give up. But I told myself not to lose heart. I practised every day. I recorded my speech and corrected my pronunciation again and again. Whenever I wanted to stop, I encouraged myself to keep trying.
Months later, I took part in another competition. This time I finished my speech smoothly. I learnt that dreams may be far but can be reached; wishes may be hard but can come true with persistence. As long as we never give up, we will make progress.
