Eric Baden, a coffee expert from Germany, runs a café called Coffee Commune in Shanghai. For over 10 years, he’s been working hard to make Yunnan coffee better. Here’s his interview.
Host: Eric, what made you want to do something for Yunnan coffee?
Eric: Thirteen years ago, I went to Yunnan to look for coffee beans for my business. When I first tried Yunnan coffee, its special taste surprised me. I believed it could be world-famous. But farmers there told me their coffee beans were sold cheaply. They didn’t know how to grow coffee right or process (加工) it properly. Few people knew Yunnan produced coffee. Also, most farmers grew only one kind of coffee bean. Seeing that, I just knew I had to help.
Host: ▲
Eric: Local farmers have learned new growing and processing skills. Companies have also developed their own processing system. For example, our company’s “P86+” method produces high-quality beans. In 2019, our beans won a silver medal at an international competition. And some farmers use the method of making Pu’er tea in coffee processing. It helps give Yunnan coffee a flavor of Pu’er tea—a taste you won’t find anywhere else! These changes have attracted more buyers worldwide, and helped farmers make more money. Of course, Yunnan coffee has become an important part of the local culture.
Host: Then what makes Yunnan a good place to grow coffee?
Eric: Yunnan gets much sunshine, rain and rich soil. The temperature changes a lot from day to night. It’s quite warm during the day but cold at night. All these work together to make its coffee special. Compared with coffee from other places, Yunnan coffee has a richer flavor.
Host: What’s your biggest dream for Yunnan coffee?
Eric: My dream is to help 10,000 Yunnan coffee farmers and bring Yunnan coffee to the world.

49. Which question can be put into ▲ ?

B. To invite people to grow coffee in Yunnan.

“Look! Letters from Leo! Granny will be excited!” Mom said.
Andy turned toward his mother. “Leo?”
“Granny’s oldest and favorite brother. He made her that special box that sits beside the window—locked up. The key’s been lost forever. Now about those letters...Granny will want them.”
Andy picked that special box and letters up, then took them to the kitchen. “What did you put in the box, Granny?” Andy asked.
“Nothing! I knew Leo would be joining the army soon. Just before he left, he locked my box and hid the key. He said he’d invented a word game for me and promised he’d send clues. We got letters but not one clue. Leo’s final letter arrived after we heard the heartbreaking news. Mother was so sad. She tore (撕) it in half.”
Granny watched Andy spread the letters on the table. She whispered, “I always thought mother threw away all of Leo’s letters.”
Andy pointed at one letter in two pieces. “This must be the last letter Leo sent home.”
Granny picked up one half of the letter, and read, “Dearest Littlest Sister...”
“Leo did send clues. Let’s tape the halves together.” Andy said.
Andy read, “Ewe reed four make?”
“Nonsense words,” Granny said.
Andy looked at the paper, then said, “Wait! If we read down, instead of across—in columns (列), not rows.” He read the words one by one “You need to read this aloud for it to make some sense.”
Granny’s eyes opened wide. “Leo was using homophones (同音异形词)!”
She began to read, “Go to the room where we ate. See the flower like the sun?”
Granny smiled. “The dining room is where we ate. The painting of a sunflower...”
Andy was on his way. In a few seconds, he returned, carrying the painting. They discovered another clue printed in light pencil on the back. Andy read, “Look above the hole where rain does not come down. See the broken time piece? There! Inside!”
He ran to the fireplace then gave the clock to Granny. “This clock has never kept time.” Granny opened the clock’s tiny glass door and reached inside. “All those years. It’s been right here.” She opened the box with the key and looked into it.
There is a photo of a girl and her big brother. On the back of the photo was printed: I NEW you’d worked it out. Use this box for all your special treasures. Love, Leo.
Granny gently placed the photo and the letters inside the box. “My treasures,” she said.
51. How may the underlined words “see the flower like the sun” be shown in the letter?

52. When Granny said “Nonsense words”, she most probably felt _________.
A. curious B. worried C. hopeless D. confident

A new study suggests that roosters can recognize themselves in a mirror (镜子).
Scientists use the “mark test” to test whether an animal can recognize itself. A mark is put on an animal, usually in a spot that can only be seen in a mirror. Then the animal is allowed to look in a mirror. If the animal seems to pay attention to the mark, scientists believe the animal has recognized itself.
The list of animals who can recognize themselves in a mirror isn’t long. The skill has mainly been found in animals with large brains like dolphins, chimpanzees and elephants. Until recently, only one kind of bird had passed the test.
Scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany recently ran the mark test on roosters. They put a pink triangle (三角形) on the chests of the roosters. But when the roosters looked in a mirror, they didn’t seem to notice the mark.
The scientists then needed a different way to test whether the roosters could recognize themselves.
When there’s danger—like a hawk (鹰) flying above—roosters make loud calls to warn nearby chickens. But roosters only make the cries if other chickens can hear them. If they’re alone, they remain quiet so the hawk won’t see them.
The scientists realized that they could use the shadow (影子) of a hawk to test whether or not the roosters thought they were alone—even when they could see “another” chicken in a mirror.
First, the scientists let the roosters spend time getting used to being in a closed-in space and having a mirror around. Then, they ran several tests by making a hawk shadow appear above a rooster and watching how it reacted. When there was no mirror, the roosters reacted as usual. It called out when it was near another rooster (Picture ▲ ), but remained quiet when it was alone. But when a rooster was in a space where it could see itself in the mirror, it wasn’t fooled into thinking there was another rooster. It remained silent under the hawk shadow. It did this even if there was a rooster hidden behind the mirror.
The scientists say the results show that the roosters knew they were seeing themselves in the mirror, and not other roosters.
54. What is the purpose of the “mark test”?
A. To test a bird’s ability to fly. B. To measure an animal’s brain size.
C. To see if an animal can recognize itself. D. To compare different animals’ intelligence.
55. What does the underlined word “them” refer to?
A. Hawks. B. Roosters. C. Chickens. D. Scientists.
56. Which of the following pictures can be put into ▲ ?
A. B. C. D.
57. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Roosters prefer to make no sounds when it faces danger alone.
B. Roosters are not as smart as dolphins, chimpanzees and elephants.
C. The mark test can exactly tell if an animal can recognize itself in the mirror.
D. When seeing its image in the mirror, the rooster thinks there’s another rooster.

七、阅读表达 (本大题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made a great invention—the telephone. For the first time in history, people could talk to someone far away just like they were in the same room. But today, phones can do much more than just make calls!
The story of mobile phones began with two-way radios. These early devices (设备) had a big problem—they only worked when people were close to each other. In the 1940s, smart scientists found a way. They built tall radio towers across the country to pass signals (信号) easily.
Everything changed in 1973 when Dr. Martin Cooper made the first real mobile phone call. During the 1980s, mobile phones became smaller but were still very expensive. Only rich business people could afford them, and the phones looked like big plastic bricks.
The 1990s brought another big change. Phones became cheaper and smaller, fitting easily in pockets. Soon, almost everyone had one. Text messaging became popular. People started writing short messages instead of making phone calls. Meeting time became more flexible (灵活的) because you could just text “I’ll be 15 minutes late.”
Now we have smartphones—like powerful mini-computers in our pockets. We use them to take photos, watch videos, play games, and even help with housework! Messaging apps let us send videos and long messages easily. While phones help us stay connected, some people worry that we spend too much time on them.
Looking back, it’s amazing how phones have changed. From Bell’s simple telephone to today’s smartphones, this has truly changed our lives. What will phones be able to do next? Only time will tell!

First, love the dark. Bright light may affect your sleep. So make sure your bedroom is as dark as possible. You can wear an eye mask when you sleep.

48. What was Yunnan coffee like thirteen years ago according to Eric?
A. The coffee tasted terrible. B. The coffee beans were cheap.
C. Lots of people knew the coffee. D. There were many kinds of coffee beans.
49. Which question can be put into ▲ ?
A. How has Yunnan coffee influenced your life?
B. What do you want to say to the coffee lovers?

50. What is the purpose of this text?

The skill has mainly been found in animals with large brains, like dolphins, chimpanzees and elephants.
