Pocket money management is an important life skill for teenagers. These days, many students get monthly pocket money, but few of them have clear plans for it. Some spend all the money on snacks or games in the first week, while others keep it in a drawer (抽屉) and never touch it. Neither way helps them build a healthy view of money.
To solve this problem, many schools now teach students to make a simple budget. At the beginning of each month, students write down their needs, such as stationery, and their wants, like new toys. They learn to separate the two and spend money wisely. Another useful tip is to open a savings account. Even putting 10 yuan aside every week can help students understand the value of saving.
Ms Li, a middle school teacher, says, “We don’t want to turn students into misers. We want them to learn that money is a tool. It can help us achieve small goals, like buying a gift for parents, or even do good things, like donating to animal shelters. That’s the real meaning of managing money.”
26. Why do some students have problems with their pocket money?
A. They get too much pocket money from parents.
B. They don’t have clear plans for how to use it.
C. They are not allowed to open bank accounts.
D. They spend too much money on school supplies.
27. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 2?
A. To show the bad results of spending money carelessly.
B. To give practical ways for students to manage pocket money.
C. To explain why some students never save their pocket money.
D. To compare different students’ habits of using pocket money.
28. The underlined word “misers” in Paragraph 3 probably means people who ________.
A. save too much money and never spend it
B. spend all their money on useless things
C. work hard but earn very little money
D. use their money to help others
29. What does Ms Li think is the real meaning of managing money?
A. To become rich as early as possible.
B. To save every coin for future use.
C. To use money to achieve goals and help others.
D. To buy expensive gifts for family and friends.
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to get more pocket money from parents.
B. The importance of teenagers learning to manage money.
C. Different ways students spend their pocket money.
D. Why students should not buy too many toys.
B
What makes a great team? Many students have different ideas. Last month, our school held a speech meeting about teamwork. Here are opinions from three students.
Li Hua, 14: I think trust is the most important thing for a team. In our class football team, we always believe in each other. Last term, I missed a key goal in a game. I felt upset and wanted to give up. But my teammates didn’t blame me. They encouraged me and said they trusted me. Later, we practiced harder together and won the school football match. Without trust, team members can hardly work together well.
Wang Yu, 15: For me, good communication matters most. Everyone in a team has different ideas. If we don’t talk with each other patiently, we will have lots of conflicts. When our group does group projects, we always share our ideas freely and listen to others carefully. We never stop others when they are speaking. This way helps us make better plans and finish tasks faster.
Zhang Kai, 14: I believe every member should know their own roles. A great team needs different people with different skills. Some people are good at planning, some are good at acting, and some are good at checking mistakes. No one can do all things well. When everyone does their own work well, the team can run smoothly.
31. Why did Li Hua feel upset last term?
A. He lost his football. B. He missed an important goal.
C. His teammates laughed at him. D. He left the football team.
32. What does the underlined word “blame” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. 责怪 B. 帮助 C. 赞美 D. 陪伴
33. What is Wang Yu’s idea about a great team?
A. Team members need full trust.
B. Everyone should have clear roles.
C. Communication is very important.
D. Team members should never make mistakes.
34. Which is TRUE according to Zhang Kai?
A. All team members need the same skills.
B. One person can finish all team tasks.
C. Clear roles help the team work well.
D. Planning is the most important skill.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to join a school sports team.
B. Different ideas about a great team.
C. How to win school football games.
D. Ways to solve conflicts in teams.

A love worth more than gold
“One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies.” The story “The Gift of the Magi” begins with this line. It’s a short story by the American writer O. Henry. He is known for the surprise endings in his stories. “The Gift of the Magi” is perhaps the most famous of all his works.
The story is about Della and Jim, a young couple with little money. Jim only makes $20 a week, and their flat alone costs $8 of that. They have to worry about money every day. Even though they’re poor, Della and Jim each have one special treasure. For Della, it is her beautiful hair. For Jim, it is his gold watch. It’s Christmas Eve. Della has tried hard to save money to buy Jim a gift. But one dollar and eighty-seven cents is certainly not enough. It breaks her heart. And so, she sells her hair to buy Jim a nice chain for his watch.
When Jim comes home, he is shocked. Della’s hair is gone! At first, Della thinks he’s angry with her, but then she knows why. Jim also brings Della a gift—an expensive set of combs for her hair. How does he do it? Well, here comes the O. Henry surprise. Jim has sold his watch!
“The Gift of the Magi” is a warm story. In the end, Della and Jim have no money, and nothing but the “useless” gifts for each other. But O. Henry does not invite us to laugh at the couple. Instead, he writes at the end that “they are the wisest”. They have something much more important than money—they have love.
36. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The story. B. The line. C. The money. D. The gift.
37. How much does Jim make in a week?
A. $8. B. $20. C. $60. D. $87.
38. Why does Della sell her hair?
A. Because she doesn’t like it anymore. B. Because she wants to buy Jim a gift.
C. Because Jim asks her to do so. D. Because she needs money for the flat.
39. What is the “O. Henry surprise” in the story?
A. Della buys Jim a watch.
B. Jim buys Della a new flat.
C. Both sell their treasures to buy gifts for each other.
D. They receive money from a stranger.
40. Why does the writer say Della and Jim are “the wisest”?
A. Because they have a lot of money.
B. Because they know how to save money.
C. Because they have love, which is more important than money.
D. Because they bought the most expensive gifts.
D

In the past, teachers mainly used blackboards and textbooks. Now, digital tools like smartboards and tablets are common. Online learning platforms (平台) allow students to study anytime. These changes make lessons more interactive (互动的) and fun. Teachers can show videos to explain difficult details. Students also hand in homework online instead of using paper.
Xue Junyu
Schools pay more attention to critical thinking (批判性思维) and creativity (创造力). Group projects help students develop teamwork skills.
