She started working in the fields with her parents when she was a junior in high school. Each day, she would go home and work on planting strawberries overnight. “It was the tough labor,” Rocha said as she remembered working late nights in the fields. “I was like, ‘You know what? I don’t want to be doing this my whole life.’” Completing the past four years of college was not always easy for Rocha. While being a full-time student, she also worked at the university’s police department to help pay for her tuition. She worked long hours to fund her education. At times, her work shifts wouldn’t end until 4 or 5 am, leaving only a few hours to spare before the next class. “I have class at 8 am, and it’s not worth me driving and then coming back,” Rocha said. “So, I would just nap in my car and then go to class after that. It was a tough time, but I got that diploma.” Rocha hopes her photos and her story will be an inspiration to immigrant families. She said it was important to include her parents in her graduation photos. “I want to not just honor them but honor all the migrant skilled workers, because a lot of times they aren’t recognized and we forget about them. My parents being migrant workers are able to have three girls get their college education, and you can do it, too, and your kids can.” she said. 1. Why did Rocha take graduation photos in the field? A. To thank her parents for their hard work. B. To remember her life in the countryside. C. To show her preference for field work. D. To share her joy of finishing college. 2. What did Rocha’s dad expect her to do? A. Help him support the family. B. Receive a further education. C. Find a well-paid job. D. Become a skilled farmer. 3. Which of the following best describes Rocha’s college life? A. Exciting. B. Boring. C. Laborious. D. Carefree. 4. What does Rocha intend to do through her story? A. To stress the importance of education. B. To remind others of labor’s value. C. To win awards at college graduation. D. To inspire others to pursue education. B In 1790, a French boy named Jean-François Champollion was born. When he was seven, his older brother told him about General Napoleon, who was in Egypt uncovering the past. “Someday I’ll go to Egypt, too!” Jean-François told his brother. When Jean-François finished school at sixteen, his brother took him to Paris to meet the scholars who were studying a black stone from Rosetta, Egypt. The stone was covered with Egyptian and Greek words and spoke about a king of Egypt named Ptolemy. By reading the Greek, the scholars hoped to decipher(破译) the Egyptian. But the work was difficult—certainly too difficult for a boy—and the scholars turned Jean-François away. They did not know that he was a true seeker of knowledge, one who would not rest until he had found the answer. Jean-François gathered his notebooks and returned to school. But when he was 30, he made his way back to Paris. In Paris, Jean-François studied the Rosetta Stone. He compared the Greek letters with the Egyptian hieroglyphs(象形文字) and came up with his own alphabet(字母表) of eagles and lions and dark-eyed chicks. But this wonderful list of letters was no help in reading the language. There were too many pictures he did not understand. There had to be a link between the pictures and the Egyptian letters. But what was it? Jean-François slept little. He ate almost nothing. Then, on a September morning in 1822, Jean-François found a small package on his doorstep—from a friend in Egypt! In it were some names copied from a temple wall. Each name was a group of letters and pictures. Jean-François studied the names and saw the link! The pictures were sounds, too. Not single letters, but syllables(音节), even whole words! Jean-François raced down the street to his brother’s office. He burst through the door, shouting, “I have the key!” Then he collapsed. He had not eaten. He had not slept. For five days, he lay near death. On the fifth day, he awoke. “Pen and paper,” he whispered, and he wrote of his discovery to the world. People all over France celebrated his success as “Jean-François became the first to translate the ancient writing and open the door to Egypt’s past.” 5. Why did the scholars fail to understand the words on the Rosetta Stone? A. They had little studying time. B. They were short of study funds. C. They understood just one language on it. D. They refused to accept help from others. 6. What can we learn about Egyptian hieroglyphs? A. They were made up of different parts. B. They had a similar origin to Greek. C. Every letter represented a sound. D. Each picture stood for a word. 7. Which of the following words can best describe Jean-François? A. Generous. B. Hard-working. C. Strict. D. Fearless. 8. How is the text mainly organized? A. By using examples. B. By making classifications. C. By following time order. D. By analyzing cause and effect. C Recently we celebrated my grandmother’s 90th birthday. Family members traveled to my hometown to visit her. This was the first time in many years that I had seen many of them. My aunt said how much she missed everyone. Though this was an opportunity to see family, many people did not make it. Honestly, I usually didn’t go there. Living far from home, I had missed many family gatherings. But this one made me realize how much I was really missing. Looking at the faces, realizing whom they were and then greeting them with open arms were strange. After chatting for a while, we caught up on each other’s news. Several relatives suggested having a family reunion soon if everyone wasn’t so busy. But my grandmother’s generation was much busier, yet still found time to gather. They understood the importance of visiting one another. They knew time was flying and that those you cared about most wouldn’t be here forever. Today, we focus on our careers and raising our own kids. Our extended family isn’t the center it once was. Besides, we keep in touch on social media. But what we really miss are the potato salad, the moments of laughter and sudden bursts of excitement when we hug someone we haven’t seen in over 10 years. Although the next get-together is always a year or so away, people aren’t goods and everyone has an expiration(到期) date. I left my grandmother’s party with a much better sense of who I was and where I came from. I spent valuable time with people who contributed to who I am today. I had forgotten how much I loved them and I was reminded how much I was loved. 9. How did the author feel about missing previous family gatherings? A. Indifferent. B. Sad. C. Regretful. D. Annoyed. 10. What do we know about the author’s grandmother’s generation? A. They were carefree. B. They held family dear. C. They took time seriously. D. They visited family frequently. 11. What does the author mean by the last sentence in Paragraph 3? A. Family reunions mean no fun. B. All goods don’t have an expiration date. C. People are always too busy to get together. D. We should see loved ones more before it’s too late. 12. Why does the author write the text? A. To convince readers to meet friends. B. To share an interesting family reunion. C. To stress the value of family gatherings. D. To compare different generations’ values. 三.语法填空 The Chinese war film The Battle at Lake Changjin __1__(arouse) enthusiastic discussion on Chinese social media since it debuted around the country on September 30. By reading the Greek, the scholars hoped to decipher the Egyptian. But the work was difficult”可知,罗塞塔石碑上并非只有一种文字,学者们希望通过阅读上面的希腊文来破译上面的古埃及文字,但这一工作并未成功。由此可知,学者们只理解石碑上的一种文字,所以无法完全理解石碑上镌刻的内容。 6. 答案 A 解析 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“In it were some names copied from a temple wall. Each name was a group of letters and pictures. Jean-François studied the names and saw the link! The pictures were sounds, too. Not single letters, but syllables, even whole words!”可知,古埃及象形文字由字母和图画构成,图画既表音也表意。 7. 答案 B 解析 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Jean-François slept little.
