When I was a young boy, every summer, Mom, Dad, my brothers and I would climb into our old car and drive for 7 hours over long mountain roads to visit Mom’s relatives in Tennessee. We always stayed in Grandma’s house there with her, Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte. It was a fun time with days full of excitement and joy. Often Aunt Charlotte would even make us a Thanksgiving dinner in the summertime. Some of my happiest childhood memories came from those visits.
One especially holds a special place in my heart. During that visit, I had great fun every day. One evening, I climbed into bed in the guest bedroom on the second floor of the house. Although I had played and explored the whole day and was really tired, I was still wide awake, my mind racing with the day’s sweet events. As I lay there, I heard the most pleasant sound coming from the front window below me. It was laughter. Mom, Dad, Uncle Rich, and Aunt Charlotte were down there sharing stories and telling jokes. The laughter was so happy, so joyous, that I found myself smiling. And even then in my young mind and childish heart, I realized that this is how life should be. The laughter became a sweet song to me and I fell asleep feeling all was right with the world.
Whenever my life seems too hard or crazy, I look back on that memory. And I took the lessons that Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte taught me. They always lived their lives with love and joy and laughter and smiles. Uncle Rich passed away many years ago but Aunt Charlotte is still alive. I write to her each week and I am so thankful to still have her in my life.
We fill lives with laughter, smiles, love and joy. We not only give ourselves happiness but also make this world a better and more beautiful place.

In life, have you ever had such moments? When walking on the street in new clothes, you always feel that everyone is staring at you. Even a tiny stain seems to be magnified (放大) infinitely and become the focus of everyone’s attention. You may even lower your head unconsciously and walk faster, trying to avoid being noticed by passers-by.
Or when speaking in a public place, pictures of yourself possibly making mistakes keep popping up in your mind, and you worry that every slight mistake will be remembered by the audience.
These are actually the effects of the spotlight effect at work. The spotlight effect refers to the fact that people unintentionally magnify their own problems infinitely. In simple terms, we often overestimate how much we are noticed by others, feeling as if we are standing in the center of the stage, being mercilessly illuminated by the spotlight, and every move of ours is being watched closely.
From a psychological perspective, this effect is the result of our egocentric (以自我为中心的) thinking tendency. Human beings are naturally more are naturally more concerned about their own feelings and experiences, and thus subconsciously assume that others are also equally focused on themselves. At the same time, we often have overly high expectations of our own behavior and image. Once there is a deviation (偏离), we will feel that it is extremely noticeable in the eyes of others.
The spotlight effect brings us many negative impacts. It makes us overly nervous and anxious in social situations, afraid to express ourselves freely, and we miss many opportunities to showcase ourselves. Overly caring about others’ opinions will also cause us to hesitate when making decisions, always worrying that our choices will lead to negative comments.
Over time, our self-confidence will also be severely damaged. So how can we break free from the spotlight effect?
28. How does the author lead in the topic of the passage?
A. By sharing a story.
B. By comparing facts.

A. People are easily noticed by others on stage.
B. People naturally care more about others’ feelings.
C. People pay equal attention to others’ mistake.
D. People’s self-centered thinking leads to the spotlight effect.
30. What final result does the spotlight effect bring?
A. It improves decision-making ability.
B. It limits people’s social performance.
C. It contributes to free self-expression.
D. It provides more opportunities to show oneself.
31. What is the most probable focus of the following paragraph?
A. Methods to increase self-confidence.

Your teacher stops you and says he needs to have a word about your performance in the recent class. You worry about it all day, wondering what you might have done wrong. When you step into his office, he begins by praising you for your contributions to the class, and you wonder if this is the customary praise that starts off the typical “feedback sandwich” pattern: initiate a compliment, insert the critical feedback, and conclude with another somewhat comforting remark.
Many educators employ this “feedback sandwich” technique in their teaching practice. However, positive feedback shouldn’t merely serve as a buffer (缓冲区) for the negative; it ought to be sincerely delivered to spark and strengthen continued excellence. Here are three strategies to effectively give positive feedback.
Avoid pairing positive with negative. When positive and negative feedback always seem to coexist, the positive feedback may lose its value and be overlooked. Make sure to provide positive feedback on its own, without adding constructive criticism.
Foster a “Growth Mindset”. Psychologist Carol Dweck, an advocate of the “growth mindset”, emphasizes the brain’s adaptability and our capacity to nurture skills and talents we may initially lack. More often than not, praises tend to center on outcomes or natural abilities, such as “You have a keen eye for detail.” Or “You’re naturally gifted in event planning.” However, she notes that highlighting the effort, exploration, and problem-solving approaches can promote skill development more effectively.
Cultivate a positive feedback culture. Instead of reserving feedback for formal occasions such as performance reviews, integrate it into everyday interactions. Share informal, positive remarks during casual conversations or even when passing someone in the hallway. Furthermore, feedback shouldn’t be limited to coming from superiors. Foster a culture where team members and classmates provide constructive comments for one another. Encourage peer-to-peer recognition. Motivate them to actively share positive observations and opinions about each other’s behavior and contributions.
Embracing positive feedback not only boosts work performance but also enhances overall well-being in the long term.
32. What does the author point out at the beginning of the text?
A. The teacher’s praise often signals upcoming criticism.
B. The “feedback sandwich” tends to make students nervous.
C. Many students feel anxious about their class performance.
D. The “feedback sandwich” is an effective teaching method.
33. What is the positive feedback like?
A. Critical and harsh. B. Genuine and inspiring.
C. Frequent but formal. D. Constructive but indirect.
34. According to Carol Dweck, what should positive feedback focus on?
A. Natural talents and abilities. B. Personal qualities and character.
C. Processes and strategies. D. Final outcomes and achievements.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How to Build a Supportive School Culture
B. Giving Positive Feedback That Truly Works
C. Growth Mindset: The Key to Better Learning
D. The Feedback Sandwich: A Common Practice
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. B

根据第二段中“However, positive feedback shouldn’t merely serve as a buffer (缓冲区) for the negative; it ought to be sincerely delivered to spark and strengthen continued excellence. (然而,积极反馈不应仅仅充当负面评价的缓冲;它应当真诚地表达,激发并巩固持续的优秀表现)”可知,积极反馈应当是真诚且鼓舞人心的。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“However, she notes that highlighting the effort, exploration, and problem‑solving approaches can promote skill development more effectively. (然而,她指出强调努力、探索以及解决问题的方法能够更有效地促进技能发展)”可知,Carol Dweck认为积极反馈应聚焦过程与方法策略。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Li Yue was a hardworking but quite shy student. She loved English and had always been at the top of her class in written exams, but speaking in front of others was her greatest fear. This year, to her own surprise, she had made it to the final of the school’s English speech competition. The topic was “The Power of Friendship”, which made her think immediately of Wang Lei. Li Yue had spent weeks preparing, writing, and rewriting her speech with the help of her best friend, Wang Lei. Wang Lei had always been her biggest supporter, encouraging her to step out of her comfort zone. He had practiced with her for countless hours, patiently listening and giving suggestions. Whenever Li Yue felt nervous or looked unsure, he would smile and say, “Believe in yourself — you’re fully prepared”, a sentence that rang loud in her heart like a steady drumbeat.
Standing backstage, Li Yue’s heart was beating quickly and loudly. She could feel her hands getting sweaty. She looked through the curtain secretly and saw the audience, a sea of faces that seemed to go on forever. Then she saw her main competitor, Sun Qian, walking off the stage with a confident smile, and receiving loud applause (掌声). The sound felt like a wave of pressure crashing over her. Suddenly, Li Yue’s confidence disappeared. Her hands started to shake uncontrollably, and the words of her carefully prepared speech seemed to disappear from her mind, leaving behind a terrifying blank. “What if I forget everything? What if they laugh at me? What if I disappoint Wang Lei after all his help?” she thought, fear rising inside her. She took a deep breath, but it did little to calm her nerves. Just then, the host’s voice rang through the speakers, “And now, let’s welcome our next contestant, Li Yue!”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Li Yue slowly walked onto the stage.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Taking a deep breath, Li Yue calmed down quickly.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Li Yue slowly walked onto the stage. She felt the bright spotlight shining directly into her eyes. The audience became completely quiet, all eyes focused on her. Just as her mind went blank, she suddenly noticed a familiar figure in the front row — it was Wang Lei, who gave her a warm, encouraging smile and a firm thumbs-up. At that moment, Wang Lei’s words echoed in her ears, “Believe in yourself — you are fully prepared.”
Taking a deep breath, Li Yue calmed down quickly. She no longer focused on memorizing the speech word for word. Instead, she began speaking from her heart, sharing the story of her and Wang Lei. She talked about those late nights spent practicing together, the times Wang Lei patiently corrected her pronunciation, and the warmth she felt during moments of hesitation. Her voice grew steadier and more confident, and the words flowed naturally. When she finished, the hall exploded with applause. At that moment, Li Yue knew she not only overcame her fear but also proved that true friendship is the greatest power of all.

B. Ways to overcome the spotlight effect.
C. Tips to become more noticeable.
D. Means to remove bad impacts.
