For all my seventeen years, New York City has been my home. It’s a place of energy, though often seen as cold and distant. Yet, personal connections can still happen here.
One cold November, my high school soccer team was heading home to Manhattan after a game in the Bronx. Twenty of us piled onto the D train, loud and full of energy, filling the car with our talking and laughter. To pass the time on the long ride, we started singing loudly, our excitement making up for our lack of musical talent.
Our noise was met with mostly unhappy looks from the other passengers. Then, an old homeless man with worn-out clothes and a calm and respectful manner entered the car. He announced he would sing a few songs. While most people ignored him, we watched closely.
He began with “Joy to the World.” His strong and clear voice was so moving that we found ourselves joining in. The atmosphere (气氛) in the car changed; people who had been keeping to themselves now listened, enjoying this special moment. He sang a few more songs, including one of his own, and was met with applause.
For his final song, he chose “God Bless America.” This time, not just our group, but everyone in the car joined in singing. The powerful, united singing drew people from other subway cars to ours. I saw a woman holding a baby, singing with tears streaming down her cheeks.
In that moment, a group of strangers — reserved New Yorkers, high school girls, and a homeless man — came together through songs, allowing our voices and hearts to become one. It is a moment whose power will stay with me forever.
24. What do people often think of New Yorkers?
A They are always in a hurry. B. They care little about others.
C. They are proud of their soccer teams. D. They are concerned about the homeless.
25. Why did we begin to sing on the D train?
A. To show off their beautiful voice. B. To cover the loud noise of the D train.
C. To kill the time during the long ride. D. To attract the attention of other passengers.
26. How did the atmosphere change after the old man started singing?
A. It remained largely unchanged. B. It became more silent and serious.
C. It became strange and uncomfortable: D. It became warmer and more united.
27. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the rules of behavior on the D train. B. To discuss the musical talent of the homeless man.
C. To tell the story of an unexpected human connection. D. To describe the challenges of living in New York.
C
Today’s young adults (aged 18 — 34) seem to avoid phone calls altogether, with a quarter admitting they’ve never even answered one.
A recent survey shows a clear change in communication styles. Texting plays a leading role, with over 70% of young adults loving it. Voice notes are also very popular, being liked by nearly 40%. It seems linked to a general dislike of unexpected calls; more than half connect them with bad news. Interestingly, this aversion (讨厌) to phone calls isn’t shared by elders. Only 1% of those aged 35 — 54 use more texts than calls.
The survey suggests a generational change in communication styles. Phone calls, once a useful tool for connection, are now seemingly dropping in favor of other methods like texting and voice notes.
As reported, the young have played a main role in the online messages and text messages. An ordinary explanation for their unwillingness to answer phone calls is the pressure connected with them. More than half of them think there is negative news when receiving unexpected calls. The young generally like planned phone conversations as the primary means of communication.
Whatever the case, it’s clear that today, we don’t even imagine communicating without the help of a phone. New technologies, such as social media, would ruin human relationships in the long term. As a matter of fact, this may already be happening.
Indeed, we can’t ignore the value of the voice in human relations. Listening to the expression of another person brings us much closer to them. It’s also easier to emotionally connect with others in this way. Text messages are more often misunderstood. When communicating something serious, it’s always better to make a phone call.
28. What can we learn from the recent survey?
A. Young people are more likely to communicate through text messages and voice notes.
B. Young people probably communicate by receiving phone calls.
C. Making phone calls has been replaced by texting messages.
D. Making a phone call still plays a major role in communication among young people.
29. What causes the change in communication styles?
A. The young feel pleasant to answer phone calls. B. All of the young think voice notes are popular.
C. Few young people connect them with bad news. D. The young are unwilling to receive unexpected calls.
30. What’s the function of the numbers listed in paragraph 2?
A. To explain the reasons. B. To make a comparison.
C. To draw a conclusion. D. To provide evidence.
31. What can we learn about making a phone call from the last paragraph?
A. It is easier to respond to. B. It makes us feel far away.
C. It helps emotional connection. D. It is more often misunderstood.
D
When scientists look for an earthquake’s cause, their search often starts underground. As centuries of earthquake researches have made clear, it’s the crash of makeup plates and the movement of underground faults and cracks that mainly lead to an earthquake. But MIT scientists have now found that certain weather events may also play a role in setting off some quakes.
In a study appearing recently in Science Advances, the researchers report that happenings of heavy snowfall and rain likely led to a series of earthquakes over the past several years in northern Japan. The study is the first to show that climate conditions could cause some quakes.
“We see that snowfall and other environmental loading at the surface affect the stress state underground, and the timing of heavy rainfall events is well-connected with the start of this earthquake crowds,” says study author William Frank, an assistant professor in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. “So, climate obviously has an effect on the response of the solid earth, and part of that response is earthquakes.”
The new study focuses on a series of ongoing earthquakes in Japan’s Noto Peninsula. The team discovered that earthquake activity in the area is surprisingly in step with certain changes in underground pressure, and that those changes are influenced by seasonal patterns of snowfall and rainfall. The scientists doubt that this new connection between quakes and climate may not be unique to Japan and could play a role in shaking up other parts of the world. Looking to the future, they predict that the climate’s influence on earthquakes could be more pronounced with global warming.
“If we’re going into a climate that’s changing, with more extreme rainfall events, and we expect a redistribution of water in the atmosphere, oceans, and continents, that will change how the Earth’s crust (地壳) is loaded,” Frank adds. “That will have an effect for sure, and it’s a connection we could further explore.”
32. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1?
A. Introduce the main topic. B. Describe a scientific experiment.
C. Present. different opinions on earthquakes. D. Explain the causes of earthquakes in detail.
33. What is the finding of the study?
A. Quakes will grow in number. B. Global warming will bring more snow.
C. Heavy rains predict major quakes. D. Certain weather events may lead to some quakes.
34. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. The research results will be applied immediately.
B. The influence of climate on earthquakes will decrease.
C. There will be no earthquakes caused by underground faults.
D. More research on the climate-earthquake link will be conducted.
35. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Secret of Earthquakes. B. How to Predict Earthquakes.
C. Climate and Earthquakes: A New Link、. D. The Effects of Global Warming on Earthquakes.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
With merely one week remaining before the school’s annual talent show, Jack felt extremely tense just thinking about it. Mr. Mike, his English teacher, had inspired him to participate in the speech contest. “Your pronunciation is great,” Mr. Mike had said, patting him on the shoulder. Yet Jack understood his own reality: he often forgot his lines (台词) when speaking in public or when he was nervous
Every afternoon after class, Jack stayed in the empty classroom, practicing alone. He marked his lines with colored pens and spoke the lines to the silent walls. Sometimes he pretended Mr. Mike was sitting in the front row, nodding approvingly.
The big day finally arrived. Jack’s legs were shaking as he waited on the backstage. Through the curtains, he saw the a of faces in the hall. Suddenly, a staff member rushed in. “We need to cut two minutes from each speech” Jack’s heart sank — his carefully timed lines now had a gaping hole. He didn’t know what contents should be cut off.
He froze there. Just at that time, Mr. Mike appeared beside him. “Think of it as a chance to adapt to the change,” the teacher said softly. “If you don’t know what to talk about, you can TELL YOUR STORY.” But Jack’s mind went blank. When his name was called, he stumbled (跌跌撞撞) onto the stage, microphone trembling (颤抖) in his hand.
The first sentence came out shakily. Then disaster struck. Jack forgot all his lines. The audience shifted in their seats and waited for his next sentence. With so many eyes fixed on him, his face went red and his throat tightened. He wanted run from the stage.

推荐长江之行
Dear Jim,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on which trip to choose. From my point of view, it is a good idea to choose the Yangtze River tour.
My reasons are as follows. First of all, as China’s mother river, the Yangtze offers amazing natural scenery, especially the Three Gorges. In addition, I suggest you experience local customs and tasty food along the river, which will help you know more about Chinese culture.
I would appreciate it if you could enjoy the trip. Wish you a pleasant journey!
Yours,
Li Hua
推荐泰山之旅
Dear Jim,
I’m more than delighted to know you are coming to China. As for your choice between the two tours, I’d like to suggest that you pay a visit to Mount Tai.
For one thing, Mount Tai is well-known for its long history and ancient stone inscriptions. For another, it is recommended that you climb to the top to enjoy the breathtaking sunrise. It will be a precious chance to feel traditional Chinese culture.
I hope my advice will be of some help to you. May you have a wonderful time!
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写:
Just then, he noticed Mr. Mike looking at him full of expectation. Mr. Mike’s eyes sparkled with encouragement, and he made a gentle “come on” gesture with his hand. Jack’s racing heart slowed a little— he thought of those afternoons practicing alone, the colored marks on his script, and his teacher’s constant support. Taking a shaky but deep breath, he gripped the microphone tightly, his fingers no longer trembling. Instead of struggling to recall the prepared lines, he started talking about his fear of public speaking and how he’d pushed himself to practice every day. His voice grew steadier as he spoke from the heart, eyes shining with sincerity.
When he finished his speech, a great round of applause filled the hall. Jack stood frozen for a moment, unable to believe the warm response. The audience’s cheers echoed in his ears, and he felt a surge of joy and relief rushing through his body. He bowed deeply, his face breaking into a bright smile. As he stepped off the stage, Mr. Mike pulled him into a firm hug. “You told the most wonderful story,” the teacher said proudly. Jack’s nervousness had vanished completely, replaced by a sense of achievement he would never forget.

听下面一段独白,回答第18至第20三个小题。
M: The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway’s most lasting works and may become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a great part in his winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the 1954Nobel Prize in Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man and the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanjaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me. This novel mainly wrote about one old man alone in the sea who fishes. He caught one big fish. But he met a shark on the way home. The old man used all his skills to fight with the shark. At last, the fish he caught was eaten up by the shark, but he never gave up. This book shows to us that the confidence is just like the automobile motor, and is power which makes the person go forward.
