Tom always lived for grades. He was always interested in books and ideas. Why should he care about people? They only made fun of him. They were jealous (妒忌的) because he was so smart, or so he thought. It seemed that Tom knew everything — except one thing. He didn’t know how to get along with other people.
He made his parents believe that school was a waste of time, so he began home schooling with special teachers. He dreamed of being the youngest person to enter university, and he sent letters to famous professors to see if it was possible.
One day, the doorbell rang. When Tom opened the door, there was his idol — Professor Rosen. Tom was so excited that he could hardly speak. The two talked for a long time, exchanging ideas. The professor was surprised at what this young boy knew. “Tom, tell me about your friends. What do you do for fun?” the professor wanted to know.
There was silence as Tom realised that he didn’t really have any friends. “Well, I don’t have time for all that. I’m too busy with my studies,” he said.
“That’s a problem, Tom. You have to learn that the world is not just filled with ideas. It’s filled with people. And you have to remember to be what you are ... a boy. Boys need to have fun.”
The professor talked a bit more and then said, “I have to go, but I have a test for you. In this box, there are three things. I want you to learn how to use them. It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you. Experiment and learn how to use them, and I’ l be back in a week to see how you’ re doing. Then, I’ll have another test for you.”
The professor left and Tom opened the box. Inside were two baseball gloves and a ball. He tried on a glove and picked up the ball, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes.
4. What does the underlined word “it” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Writing letters. B. Attending university early.
C. Studying at home. D. Visiting famous professors.
5. What do Professor Rosen’s words mean in Paragraph 5?
A. It’s good for Tom to share new ideas with his teachers.
B. It’s important for Tom to remember what he’s learnt.
C. It’s necessary for Tom to realise what his problem is.
D. It’s helpful for Tom to find time for fun and social interaction.
6. Why did Professor Rosen set the first test for Tom according to the text?
A. To improve Tom’s testing skills. B. To check Tom’s language level.
C. To stop Tom from being silent. D. To encourage Tom to make friends.
7. What will Tom probably do next according to the text?
A. Work much harder on his studies.
B. Give the box back to the professor.
C. Go out to play baseball with someone.
D. Ask for more information by letter.
B 5. D 6. D 7. C
根据文章第二段划线词之前“He dreamed of being the youngest person to enter university, and he sent letters to famous professors to see if (他梦想成为最年轻的进入大学的人,他写信给著名教授来看看)”可知汤姆的梦想是成为进入大学的最年轻的人,所以他给著名教授写信询问这件事情是否会成为可能,由此可知划线词it指代的是早点上大学。
根据文章第五段““That’s a problem, Tom. You have to learn that the world is not just filled with ideas. It’s filled with people. And you have to remember to be what you are ... a boy. Boys need to have fun.”(“这是个问题,汤姆。你得明白,这个世界不只是充满了想法。它还充满了人。而且你得记住要保持本色……做个孩子。孩子需要玩乐。”)”可知教授告诉汤姆他还是个孩子,而孩子是需要玩乐和与人交往的,由此可知教授话的意思是抽出时间来娱乐和社交对汤姆来说很有帮助。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you. Experiment and learn how to use them, and I’ l be back in a week to see how you’ re doing.(这并不简单,你还需要另一个人来帮你。多试验多学习如何使用它们,一周后我会回来查看你的进展。)”以及最后一段“Inside were two baseball gloves and a ball.(里面放着两副棒球手套和一个球。)”
根据文章最后一段“He tried on a glove and picked up the ball, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes.(他戴上手套,拿起球,眼中闪烁着一丝兴奋的光芒。)”

Instant noodles are a favorite quick meal when people don’t want to cook. Picture eating them while watching TV on a stormy night — pure comfort! But many believe they’re just junk food that harms health. The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you prepare them.
The main issue isn’t the noodles themselves, but the common way people make them: pouring boiling water over dried noodles and adding all the salty seasoning packets. These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making this version unbalanced and unhealthy.
Actually, plain instant noodles aren’t terrible. They’re fried during production (which adds some oil and calories), but they fill you up well and provide quick energy when you’re hungry. To make them healthier, cook them properly: boil the noodles first, drain excess starchy (含有淀粉的) water, then use fresh water or broth (肉汤). Crucially, use only half the seasoning packet to reduce salt. Add vegetables like spinach or carrots and protein like an egg or tofu while cooking. This boosts vitamins and protein while cutting sodium (钠). This transforms them into a balanced meal!
So, are instant noodles junk food? If prepared lazily with all the seasoning and no extras, yes. But when cooked with less seasoning plus veggies and protein, they become a decent occasional meal. Remember: the secret is variety. Enjoy them once or twice a week as part of a diverse diet, and they won’t harm your health. They’re far less scary than people think — just upgrade your cooking method!
8. What determines if instant noodles are unhealthy?
A. Their quick cooking time. B. The time of eating.
C. The preparation method. D. The junk food label.
9. What is the major cause of unhealthy instant noodles?
A. The dried noodles. B. The flavor packets.
C. Using boiling water. D. People avoiding cooking.
10. What is the main purpose of the third paragraph?
A. Warn about health dangers. B. Give cooking instructions.
C. Argue noodles are harmless. D. List harmful additives.
11. What is the suitable title for the passage?
A. Instant Noodles: Not All Waste. B. Instant Noodles: How to Cook?
C. Instant Noodles: Eat Sometimes. D. Instant Noodles: What we know?
C 9. B 10. B 11. A
根据第一段“The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you prepare them.(事实上,它们是否不健康完全取决于你如何准备)”可知,食用方法决定了方便面是否不健康。
根据第二段“These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making this version unbalanced and unhealthy.(这些调味包含有高盐量和人工添加剂,导致该版本营养失衡且不健康)”可知,不健康方便面的主要成因是调味包中过量的钠盐与人工合成添加剂。
This transforms them into a balanced meal!(实际上,普通的方便面并不算太糟糕。
D
Research often points to exercise as a good way to improve mental health, but a recent study from the University of Georgia suggests that it’s not just physical movement that affects mental health. It’s how, where and why you exercise that makes the difference.
“In previous (以前的) research, physical-activity research has focused on how long someone exercises for or how many calories are burned,” said Patrick O’Connor, co-author of the study. “The amount of exercise has been the main way researchers have tried to understand how physical activity might influence mental health, while often ignoring whether those minutes were spent exercising with a friend or as part of a game.”
Many studies found that people who take part in regular leisure-time physical activity, like going for a run, taking a yoga class or biking for fun, tend to report lower levels of anxiety. But while leisure-time physical activity offers better mental health outcomes, these benefits may vary greatly depending on the environment of the activity, according to the researchers.
“For example, if a soccer player runs down the field and kicks the game-winning ball, their mental health is fantastic,” O’Connor said. “In contrast, if you do the exact same exercise but miss the goal and people are blaming (责备) you, you likely feel very differently.”
Many studies also showed that adopting regular exercise routines improved mental health, especially for individuals with existing mental health disorders. However, these studies were typically based on similar samples, so the results aren’t probably suitable for more diverse groups. “If we’re trying to help people’s mental health through exercise, then not only do we need to think about the amount and the mode, we also need to ask: What is the context (背景)?” O’Connor said.
For O’Connor, the key point is clear. It’s not just movement that matters. It’s the meaning, the context and the experience of the activity that determine the influence of exercise on mental health.
12. What did the past physical-activity research pay most attention to?
A. The exercise environment. B. The length and energy cost of exercise.
C. The experience of doing sports. D. The feeling of joining group games.
13. Why do two soccer players have different mental feelings with the same exercise?
A. They have different exercise habits. B. Their exercise environments and results are different.
C. Their health conditions are not the same. D. They spend different time on sports.
14. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Exercise amount is the only key to mental health.
B. Old study results can fit all kinds of people well.
C. The context of exercise plays a vital role in mental health.
D. Leisure-time exercise can stop anxiety completely.
15. What does the underlined word “diverse” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Various. B. Simple. C. Healthy. D. Serious.
B 13. B 14. C 15. A
根据第二段中“In previous research, physical-activity research has focused on how long someone exercises for or how many calories are burned. The amount of exercise has been the main way researchers have tried to understand how physical activity might influence mental health. (在以前的研究中,体育活动研究主要关注某人锻炼了多长时间或燃烧了多少卡路里。运动量一直是研究人员试图理解体育活动如何影响心理健康的主要方式。) ”可知,过去的体育活动研究最关注的是锻炼的时长和能量消耗。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“But while leisure-time physical activity offers better mental heath outcomes, these benefits may vary greatly depending on the environment of the activity, according to the researchers. (但研究人员指出,尽管休闲时的体育活动能带来更好的心理健康效果,但这些益处会因活动所处的环境而有很大差异。)”和第四段中“For example, if a soccer player runs down the field and kicks the game-winning ball, their mental health is fantastic. In contrast, if you do the exact same exercise but miss the goal and people are blaming you, you likely feel very differently. (例如,如果一名足球运动员冲下球场踢进了制胜球,他们的心理状态非常好。相反,如果你做了完全相同的运动但没进球,而且人们都在责怪你,你可能会感觉非常不同。)”可知,两名足球运动员做相同的运动却有不同的心理感受,是因为他们的锻炼环境和结果不同。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“It’s not just movement that matters. It’s the meaning, the context and the experience of the activity that determine the influence of exercise on mental health. (重要的不仅仅是运动,而是活动的意义、背景和体验决定了锻炼对心理健康的影响。)”以及第五段中“If we’re trying to help people’s mental health through exercise, then not only do we need to think about the amount and the mode, we also need to ask: What is the context? (如果我们想通过锻炼来帮助人们的心理健康,那么我们不仅需要考虑运动量和方式,还需要问:背景是什么?)”可推知,锻炼的背景在心理健康中起着至关重要的作用。
【15题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中“However, these studies were typically based on similar samples, so the results aren’t probably suitable for more diverse groups. (然而,这些研究通常基于相似的样本,所以结果可能不适用于更diverse的群体。)”可知,由于研究基于相似样本,因此结果不适用于更加“多样化的”群体。diverse意为“各种各样的”,与various意思相近。

【答案】
Dear Peter,
I understand you’re under great stress since entering senior high. Don’t be overly anxious! First, make a detailed study plan that suits your own situation, which can help you manage your time more effectively.
Second, what you need to know is that everyone adapts to new environments at their own pace, so be patient with yourself. You can join some clubs where you can meet like-minded friends; this is a great way to fit into the new surroundings.
If you still feel overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to talk to your teachers or classmates, who can offer you useful advice.
I believe you’ll get used to it soon.
Best wishes!

I still remember the first day when I entered high school. Everywhere on the campus I could smell excitement in the fresh air, yet a thread of nervousness wound through my stomach. As I walked through the campus road, I gazed up at the towering buildings and the busy students, knowing that a new chapter of my school life was about to unfold.
In my first math class, I quickly realized it was going to be far harder than what I was used to. The teacher talked so fast, and the mountain of homework was too much, making it hard for me to breathe. I tried to pay attention, but my mind was racing. I started to doubt myself, wondering if I could really handle high school life. I felt I could hardly follow anything. I felt lost.
After the class, I sat at my desk, feeling like I was in over my head. That’s when Mr. Smith, my math teacher, came over. He saw I was upset and asked if I was okay. I told him I was finding everything really hard and wasn’t sure I could handle it.
Mr. Smith’s eyes softened as he smiled, and he said in a comforting tone, “I understand how you feel. High school is a significant leap from junior high, but it’s also an opportunity for you to grow. Everyone struggles at first. The important thing is not to give up.” He spent some time going over the math stuff I didn’t understand.
His words made me feel a little better, and I listened closely as he explained everything again. By the end of our talk, I felt a bit more hopeful about the rest of the day and the year ahead.

As the weeks passed, I noticed that I was making progress.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
After that day, I made up my mind to face the challenges. Regarding my studies, I developed a comprehensive plan. For math, I dedicated extra hours every day to practicing problems and seeking help from teachers and classmates. I also applied the same determination to other subjects. In English, I started reading English novels and watching English movies to improve my language sense. In physics, I did more experiments to better understand the theories. I told myself that every subject was a mountain to climb, and I was ready to scale them all.
As the weeks passed, I noticed that I was making progress. Math was no longer the insurmountable hurdle it once was. I could follow the teacher’s pace in class and solve complex problems independently. In English, I could communicate more fluently and write better essays. My physics grades also soared as I grasped the concepts more thoroughly. These achievements not only brought me joy but also strengthened my belief that hard work pays off. I was deeply thankful to Mr. Smith. His words of encouragement had lit a fire within me, inspiring me to keep striving forward in this new stage of my life.

C. It’s necessary for Tom to realise what his problem is.
D. It’s helpful for Tom to find time for fun and social interaction.
6. Why did Professor Rosen set the first test for Tom according to the text?
A. To improve Tom’s testing skills. B. To check Tom’s language level.

7. What will Tom probably do next according to the text?

A. Various. B. Simple. C. Healthy. D. Serious.
