Setting Realistic Expectations
Avoid media-based expectations, good or bad.Being a tecnagcr is not necessarily any

Developing Yourself
Develop your sense of self, focusing more on your own thoughts and goals, instead of what

with different reasons behind it.Since social interaction is necessary for succeeding,it's
important to leamn how to deal with shyness and social anxiety.Consider working with a friend
or a family member of close age to develop your social skills. It may not replace new social
exchanges,but it's a good practice.
Remember,not everyone enjoys their teens;that's just a fact of life.However,if you don't
enjoy your teens, centre on being kind to others and getting through the period.

I One of my very earliest memories took place on October 4,1957.That was the day that
Russia-which was then known as the Soviet Union-launched Sputnik, the first satellite
(人造卫星)to orbit(沿轨道运行)the Earth.
I remember standing at the front yard, looking at the sky for a moving star that could be
Sputnik passing over the city of Baltimore. We never did see Sputnik, but never mind. From that
day on,I focused on space.I grew up during the days when the first astronauts went into orbit,
left their spaceship and took their first walks in space.I watched Apollo 1I land and Neil
Armstrong become the first human to walk on the moon.I watched the landing on TV,with 250
other kids at a space camp named Camp Comet.
As I got older,I knew that I wanted to become a space reporter and a space author.Writing
about space has allowed me to be present for the final launch of the space shuttle in 2011.It's
allowed me to watch the launch of a Soyuz rocket-taking NASA astronaut Scott Kelly to the
International Space Station for his year in space. It's allowed me to go to NASA's Mission
Control in Houston,Texas. It's allowed me to see the Cassini spaceship,in Pasadena,California.
To my joy,I've written several books about space, including Apollo 13.That book became
the basic story for the 1995 movie about the three astronauts'exploring the moon in 1970.When
I was a boy,I followed it closely, worrying about whether the astronauts would make it home.
Their leader,Jim Lovell, was one of my childhood heroes.I had his picture on the wall of my
bedroom. It was a great honor for me to work with him on the book when I grew up.

I could connect with living plants and animals. It allowed me to clear my mind and recover from
the stress of work,"Huang explained. She believes parks can feel like your own secret hideaway.
Being introverted(内向的),she finds parks to be ideal relaxing places for people like her
Yet,parks are also shared spaces. They're different from shopping malls and cinemas for a
particular reason, according to young stage designer Liu Xi,who sees parks as places that
contradict consumerism(消费主义).In parks,people can walk,.row a boat,,read under the trees,,
or simply be lost in thought on a bench.
Cheng Yuyan, the 25-year-old founder of the Douban interest group"We Love Strolling in
the Park",saw something interesting during her visits to parks in Japan. She noticed that locals
donated park benches with their names on them.Additionally, many parks offered guidebooks
detailing the history, geography and blooming schedules of the plants.
Inspired by these practices,Cheng believes people can feel more connected to parks by
building a sense of ownership. She plans to encourage members of her Douban group to do

Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and
high school students.Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from
home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work
of these "fly-in,fly-out"parents might influence the health of their children.
Teenagers who experienced the long absence of a parent were likely to have emotional(
or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours.
This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who
often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don't have to be home all the time to be present in their
children's lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a
teenager may sometimes be like a potted(盆栽的)plant..
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and found ways to be present without
trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the
sitting room where her teenagers watch TV.They enjoy each other's company without the need
to talk.Another friend usually accepts his daughter's invitation to work or read nearby while she
sits and does her homework.Perhaps, that,at least for some families,is the best way for
teenagers and their parents to stay close.
In fact, earlier research suggests that children see their parents as a safe base from which
they explore the world Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents'
movements from room to room, even while going on with their own activities.Perhaps teens,
like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don't want to stay away
from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand,so as parents we could offer our teenagers a "potted flower"
as a gift, whose quiet and steady presence will give them a great day.
32.What did the study find about the 618 teens?
A.They had more dinners with their parents.
B.They were more prepared to help themselves.
C.They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
D.They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings

A.She doubts it.
B.She supports it.
C.She is worried about it
D.She cares little about it.
34.What does the earlier research say about young kids according to Paragraph 5?
A.They want their parents'presence.
B.They want their parents to be safe.
C They want more freedom from parents.
D.They show more interest in new activities.
35.Which can be a suitable title.for the text?
A.Teens Want Potted Plant Parents.
B.Your Kids Still Need Conversation
C.Quiet Families Raise Healthier Teenagers.

It was a beautiful spring moming in Falmont Primary School.Surrounded by green trees

sunlight flooded in,warming the students and their wooden desks.High in the tree,a group of
tiny birds chirped (happily on the branches, their beautiful calls bringing the whole
school to life.
In Classroom 103 on the 4th floor,Mrs.Brown was teaching a geography lesson."The
earth plates move very slowly,"she explained, pointing to a dynamic picture."When they push
against each other, earthquakes can happen.Remember, when an earthquake hits, calmness is
the first step to self-rescue.Next you should.Such earthquake safety lessons were held every
month and earthquake safety procedures()were practiced twice each term at Falmont.
"Again! We have never experienced an earthquake before. Is this really necessary?"Tom
whispered to his deskmate Lisa."You never know."Lisa continued taking notes attentively
Feeling bored,Tom looked out of the window.Suddenly,he noticed the birds flying away
as if something terrible was happening. Then,a strong and loud noise, like a train made of
thunder came from the north. It started with a slight shake. But the next second, the entire
classroom shook heavily, and dust rained down from the ceiling. The lights in the classroom
moved from side to side wildly, and the deafening crash of breaking glass rang out.
"Earthquakel"Lisa shouted,with obvious fear in her voice.On hearing Lisa's words,Tom
jumped to his feet, crying and trying to rush out.Fear spread quickly among the class-some
