Spring Vegetables

Not too long ago, 41-year-old Garrett Fisher flew in a small airplane close to the surface of Europe’s largest glacier(冰川), which is in Norway. In that environment, the plane carrying a man who photographed glaciers seemed almost like a toy.
Fisher often combines two activities he loves, flying and photography, trying to photo- graph every glacier on Earth. He wants his photos to show the beauty of glaciers before some of them disappear. Scientists say many glaciers are melting or getting smaller because the Earth's average temperature is increasing. By 2100, the size of European glaciers can decrease by between 22 percent and 84 percent. Nearly all small glaciers in Norway will likely disappear. For Fisher, this means that time is running out. The melting pushes him to try to photograph them before it is too late.
As a child, Fisher lived next door to a small airport in the state of New York. His grand- father was a pilot and took Fisher on plane rides when he was a young child. His grandfather would tell him, “Whatever you set your mind to, you can do. ”
In the late 1990s, a friend told Fisher that the world’s glaciers were disappearing. This pushed him to combine his love of flying and photography to photograph the Earth's remaining glaciers. He believed he was in a race against time and that his photographs could be of great value to future generations. So, he launched Global Glacier Initiative, a non-profit group to support and show his work, and he planned to open his photos to the public for research.
Some people will ask him why he always risks flying over glaciers when satellites have already given pictures of them. Fisher says, “Satellite images can't really show the loveliness of glaciers the way my photos can. My photos show the colors and shapes as the light from the sun hits them. Science has all of the data we need. The problem is that it’s not beautiful. ”
4.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Fisher’s social activities.
B.Fisher’s trips to European countries.
C.The reason for Fisher’s shooting glaciers.
D.The cause of the rise in Earth temperature.
5.What is related to Fisher’s flying hobby?
A.His grandparents' dream.
B.His childhood experiences.
C.His curiosity for taking photos in the air,
D.His interest in seeing glaciers from the air,
6.Which word best describes Fisher’s photographs?
A.Romantic. B.Unattractive. C.Confusing. D.Valuable.
7.What does Fisher say about his photographs in the last paragraph?
A.They lack light processing.
B.They lack the colors and shapes.
C.They show the beauty of glaciers.
D.They hardly show the loveliness of glaciers.
Big Basin Redwoods State Park is recovering after a natural disaster—fires heavily dam aged California’s oldest protected natural area. Lightning storms caused more than 650 fires in Northern California. But during a guided visit recently, life was reappearing on blackened red wood trees. Small flowers stood out on the burned land.
The big park usually has about 1 million visitors a year. But one year ago, many parts of the park burned for 24 hours. More than 100 structures were sabotaged , including the main part of the historic park, shelters, picnic tables and more. Many bridges were gone, too. In some places, roots are still smoking, leaving dangerous underground areas. Repair experts have been trying to identify materials and waste that need to be removed. In many ways, the park does not look much different than it did soon after fires.
Most of the ancient redwoods have survived. Astonishingly, the trees are about 2, 000 years old and among the tallest living things on Earth. The next 8 to 10 months will be spent cleaning up the park. It will be up to a year before the public can safely use the paths beyond a small coastal area.
Environmentalists have urged quick action because state officials are currently providing funds for wildfire recovery efforts and new building projects. This change provides a rare chance to get more money for public lands.
Barth is the director of Sempervirens Fund. That group started an effort in 1900 to protect 15. 5 square kilometers of redwood forest that is now in the center of Big Basin. “When Big Basin was set up, it was a sign of hope for the state park’s system, " she said. Barth added, “In this fire and rebirth, you have an opportunity again. ”Redwoods are naturally fire resistant(防火的). In old growth forests, most trees have burn marks dating back to hundreds of years.
8.What does the author feel about the recovery of the park?
A.Doubtful. B.Anxious. C.Curious. D.Hopeful.
9.What does the underlined word “sabotaged” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Destroyed. B.Ignored. C.Protected. D.Rebuilt.
10.What do we know about the redwoods?
A.They have a short history. B.They are amazingly tall.
C.Few of them have survived. D.Most of them have no burn marks.
11.What did Barth think of building Big Basin?
A.It was for funds. B.It was effortless.
C.It was praiseworthy. D.It was against nature.
Got a messy desk? Don’t worry. It likely means you’re creative and full of new ideas. A clean desk, by contrast, suggests generosity and tradition. “Previous study found that a clean setting leads people to do good things,” said Kathleen Vohs, a researcher from University of Minnesota. “We found, however, that you can get really valuable outcomes from being in a messy setting.”
In the first of several experiments, some participants (参与者) were asked to complete a task in a clean and orderly office, while others did so in a messy one with papers and office supplies everywhere. Afterward, the participants were given a chance to donate to a charity. “Being in a clean room seemed to encourage people to do what was expected of them,” Vohs said, “compared with the participants in the messy room, the participants in the clean room donated more of their own money to charity.”
But the researchers overlooked that messiness might have its advantages as well. In an—other experiment, the participants were asked to come up with new uses for ping—pong balls. The participants in the messy room got the same number of ideas for new uses for the balls as the ones in the clean—room did, but their ideas were considered as more interesting and creative.
“Being in a messy room led to something that firms, industries and societies want more of: creativity,”Vohs said. “The researchers also found that disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition, which can produce fresh ideas,” Vohs said. “Orderly environments, in contrast, encourage tradition and playing it safe,” Vohs added. “Just making that environment tidy or untidy made such a great difference in people’s behavior.”
12.What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To raise a question for readers to discuss.
B.To present the main topic of the text.
C.To question the findings of previous study.
D.To draw attention to human’s good qualities.
13.How was the first experiments mainly carried out?
A.By making comparisons. B.By referring to a theory.
C.By giving some examples. D.By analyzing cause and effect.
14.What does Vohs think of the disorderly environments?
A.Interesting and creative ideas can be inspired.
B.The messier the environment is, the better it is.
C.The disorderly environments need to be cleaned up.
D.Bad habits may be formed in such an environment.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.It Is Time to Break Traditions
B.Clean up Your Messy Desk Now
C.What a Messy Desk Says about You
D.How Can You Deal with a Messy Personality

Dedicated (专用的) reading time. Setting aside some dedicated time every day is a good place to start. 17 Literary agent Molly Murray, who runs Seahorse Bookstore, says she and her husband were struggling to get through their book pile until they “turned off the TV and became intentional about fitting in time to read” .
Listen to an audiobook. 18 Book blogger Amanda Chatterton, who reviews books on her site Bookish Chat, says she sticks in her headphones and “reads” while going for an hour long pre-work walk in the morning. “They are such a good way to up your reading,” she says Set a challenge. If you’re the kind of person who is inspired by goals, try using websites like GoodReads to set yourself a reading challenge for the year. 19 Elsewhere, Story-Graph has a list of challenges you can sign up to, such as “read the world”, which tasks you with reading a book by an author from ten different countries.
20 Finding that none of her close friends or family enjoyed reading as much as she did, Tracy Fenton launched THE Book Club on the Internet seven years ago and has grown it to over 13, 000 members since then. “It’s fantastic to be among like-minded individuals who love reading as much as I do,” she said.
A.Connect with book-lovers online.
B.Take inspiration from other readers.
C.So how can we make reading a regular habit?
D.What can we do to choose books for our needs?
E.Even just 15 minutes will see you finish an average-length book in 20 days.
F.You can also add a bit of competition by following what friends are reading.
G.For those tough to find pure reading time, audio books allow you to multitask

One Saturday morning, Jeremy woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing, Jeremy knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern, “Mom, are you ok?” “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal (燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I’m going to stay in bed.”
Jeremy poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Jeremy help? First, he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do? Jeremy thought. Saturday was the day when mom did laundry. Jeremy loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother’s favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Jeremy opened the door to the washer and put the clothing inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START.” Jeremy looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!
Jeremy watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Jeremy opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Jeremy felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

But he remembered there was no pink dress in the laundry basket.

want to do sth. 故填to build。
故填which。
turn to...for help为固定搭配,意为“向……求助”。故填to。
故填was established。

主语temples and other cultural sites和take down之间是动宾关系,所以应用被动语态。故填(should) be taken。
故填a。

46. How to use pocket Money
Last Friday afternoon, our school held a discussion on “ How to use pocket Money ” in the conference hall. It was aimed to help students establish the right values concerning money.
All of the students actively participated in the discussion and expressed their own opinions freely. Some students thought that they should save their pocket money for future use. Others insisted their pocket money should be spent on school supplies. Finally, our foreign teacher drew a conclusion that every sum of pocket money should be used rationally.
In my opinion, we can use our pocket money not only for ourselves but also for others. Why don’t we give some of it to charity? I think it will make a difference to the world.

47.One Possible Version:
But he remembered there was no pink dress in the laundry basket. “Where did it come from?” Jeremy wondered, reaching into the washer to take out more clothes. Then much to his astonishment, he pulled out two T-shirts, both in light pink. Realizing there was something wrong, Jeremy stood frozen, his heart sinking. While racking his brain for reasons, he caught sight of the red socks, and it suddenly occurred to him that they must be to blame for the accident. With no means of handling the situation, Jeremy was in such a panic that he even thought of hiding the dress from his mom. “That isn’t a positive approach to the problem,” he reminded himself. Finally, he decided to dry and fold the laundry before telling his mom everything.
Holding the neatly folded pink dress, Jeremy nervously knocked at his mom’s bedroom door again. After what seemed like ages, he came to the bedside, his head drooping. Sensing his son’s unease, his mother inquired with concern what was wrong. “Sorry mom, I shouldn’t have ruined your favorite dress.” Jeremy apologized. Stuttering out the mistake he had made, he was ready to get a good scolding for his wrongdoing. Realizing what’s going on, mom smiled understandingly at Jeremy, “Never mind, dear. I know you meant to help.” Then mom held the dress up before her and said in an approving tone, “You know what? I think it looks nice.” At this Jeremy beamed with relief, making a silent vow to be more careful in helping his mom out next time.
