D On the first day of school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady with a smile. She said, "Hi, handsome! My name is Rose.I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and warmly responded, "Of course you may!" She gave me a giant squeeze(拥抱)。 “Why are you in college at such a young, innocent(幼稚的)age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, "I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel." "No, seriously?" I asked. I was curious about what may have motivated her to take on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!" she told me. After class, we walked to the Student Union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always attracted to listening to this"time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon(校园偶像)and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and enjoyed the attention from other students. She was living it up. At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at a student gathering. I’ll never forget what she taught us. "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humour every day. You’ve got to have a dream, When you lose your dreams, you die. There are so many people walking around who are dead, and they don’t even know it,"she said. “There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability,” she added.“But growing up requires finding opportunities in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.” She concluded her speech by courageously singing The Rose. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics(歌词)and live them out in our daily lives. At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun years ago. We’ll always keep her in mind because she is a wonderful woman who shows us by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be. ( )13. Why did Rose go to college according to the passage? A. To share her wisdom and experience. B. To find out the secret of living longer. C. To make her college dream come true. D. To get married to a wealthy husband. ( )14. The meaning of the underlined phrase“living it up” probably means _________. A. enjoying life B. growing older C. working hard D. losing herself ( )15. Doing what we dream of leads to no regrets in the future. D. Never stopping studying makes people stay young forever. E Scientists who study happiness have evidence(证据)to show that being kind to others can result in happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can lift a person’s mood, for example. Everyday life is full of chances for such actions, yet people do not always make the most of them. In studies, behavioural scientist Nicholas Epley and I examined a possible explanation: people who do kind acts underestimate(低估)how much the ones receiving kindness value their behaviour. In the experiments(实验), about 1,000 people were asked to do some actions to make someone else feel good. We asked both the person performing(执行)the kind act and the one receiving it to answer some questions. The performers were asked to report their own experiences and to guess how the receivers might feel. We wanted to understand how valuable people considered these acts to be, so both the performer and the receiver had to rate how“big” the act seemed. In all cases, we compared the performer’s expectations of the receiver’s mood with the receiver’s actual(实际的)experience. For one, both performers and receivers experienced more positive moods. For another, the receivers felt much better than the kind performers expected. The receivers also rated these acts as“bigger” than the people performing them did. At first, we studied acts of kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But we found that performers underestimated their positive influence on strangers as well. In one experiment, performers in a public park gave away hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day to people that just happened to be nearby. Again, the kind act brought more happiness than the performers expected These findings suggest that what might seem small could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. Considering these warm actions can improve our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can? ( )17. What behaviour can lift a person’s mood? A. Listening to music alone. B. Buying a cup of coffee for someone. C. Cleaning the street with many friends. D. Travelling to the countryside more often. ( )18. What did the receivers do in the experiments? A. They showed kindness to others. B. They guessed the performers’ feelings. C. They rated how valuable the performers’ act of kindness was. D. They compared the performers’ expectations with their actual results. ( )19. What do the studies and experiments show? A. Being kind can reduce one’s happiness as expected. B. Kindness can have far more positive influences than expected. C. Choosing kindness is more difficult than expected. D. Showing kindness is more valuable than receiving it. ( )20. The passage is written to _________. A. introduce a successful study B. fight against dishonest behaviours C. call on people to be good performers D. encourage people to show kindness to others 二、完形填空(共10题,每题1分,共10分) I used to be very self-centered(以自我为中心的) person, but in the past two years, I have really changed. And in doing so, you have made a dream of mine come true! As I look back on your childhood, there are two things worth mentioning. First, I often moved all over the country, working with new colleagues(同事)and making new friends. Therefore, your home and school lives were influenced. However, this also meant you had lots of social contact from a young age. Second, I was strict with you and had high expectations. I think this also helped you achieve success in the changing environment. I have read many life stories of well-known people. No matter what background they were born into, they all had the same things in common a strict family education, a steady(稳重的)personality, and a clear goal to aim towards. I don’t expect you to be famous, but I hope you become an educated person who benefits society. Because my family was poor, I was not well-educated when I was young. My lack(缺乏)of knowledge sometimes made me feel unable to meet the requirements of my job. Therefore, I hope you will value the chance to attend university. Besides studying and exercising, remember to take time to read literary and historical works, as well as widen your social circle. It is late at night, and I need to take a rest as I am now ill in the hospital. Yours, Dad, Kong Fansen 51.
