When I was ten, my family had a small Sunday tradition. After dinner, we each took a card from an old tin box. The box once held chocolate, and there was a picture of blue flowers on its cover. On every card there was one question, such as “What made you laugh this week?” or “Who helped you recently?” We each read out the words on the cards, and everyone had to answer.
My little brother Ben always gave funny answers. Once, he said, “A tomato fell on Dad’s foot, and he danced.” My father laughed so hard that he cried. My grandmother, who lived with us, usually told stories from her own childhood — about swimming in a river or picking apples with her friends. I loved those moments, though I sometimes thought the questions were silly.
Last year, my grandmother moved to another city to live with my aunt. The tin box stayed on the shelf, with dust (灰尘) slowly covering its blue flowers, and nobody touched it. Our dinners became quiet. Everyone looked at their phones, even Ben.
Last Sunday, my mother put the box on the table again. “It’s been too quiet,” she said. Ben, now thirteen, drew a card and read, “What do you miss?” He looked up and said, “I miss Grandma’s stories. And I miss us.”
That night we called Grandma on the phone and read her our answers. She laughed and cried at the same time. Now the tin box is back on our table every Sunday. I finally understand: A family is like a garden. It needs talking and listening to grow.
53. What did the family do after dinner on Sundays when the writer was ten?
A. They watched TV together. B. They answered questions on cards.
C. They called their grandmother. D. They went out for a walk in a park.

When the little prince lived on his small planet (星球), he looked after his rose carefully. He watered her every day, covered her with glass cover when the night fell, and listened to her complaints and her small talks. For a long time, he felt very happy.
But one day, he became angry and fought with the rose because she was too proud and she told many small lies to make the little prince feel worried. Though the little prince loved her so much, he didn’t understand why she did that. So he decided to leave his planet and travel to other planets. He wanted to find out what was important in life.
On his trip, he visited six small planets. On each planet he went to, he met different strange people: a king who loved giving orders, a man who loved getting praise, a businessman counting stars he thought were his own. No one really knew what was important in life.
At last, he arrived on the earth. He visited a big garden. While there, he saw five thousand roses. All of them were just like his own rose. He sat on the grass and began to cry. He thought his rose was not special at all. At this time, a fox came near and told him: “What makes your rose so important is all the time you spend with her. You become responsible for her. That means you need to stay with her every day, talk to her and take care of her carefully.”
At that moment, the little prince understood. His rose was special, not because she looked beautiful, but because he gave her his heart and time.

How much sleep does a teenager need? Most doctors say nine hours. But our school newspaper survey of 300 students found a different story: 64% sleep less than seven hours on school nights,25% sleep between seven and eight hours, and only 11% get eight hours or more. You may be surprised that phones are not the only reason.
We asked students to write down what they did before bed. Games and short videos came first at 46%, homework was second at 32%, and the rest was reading, chatting with friends or other things. One student said, “I start my homework after dinner, and it often takes three hours. By the time I finish, it’s already late.” Another wrote, “I don’t want to sleep early because the night is my only free time.”
Doctors say this is a real problem. Sleep is like charging (充电) a phone. A brain without enough charge works more slowly. Students who sleep less may find it harder to remember new words, and small problems can feel much bigger than they are. One doctor made a comparison between a tired brain and a phone in power-saving mode (省电模式): “It can still run, but not well.” Losing one hour of sleep every night adds up to a full night of lost sleep each week.
To work out this problem, students should make some changes. Mary is a student from Grade8. Here is what she said. “I used to get up late for school. But last month, I stopped taking my phone to bed. Instead, I kept a book on my desk. Ten pages, then lights off. My grades didn’t change, but my mornings did.”
But are the students the only ones who should make changes? We believe schools and parents can also help. More ideas from different sides may make a difference.
61. Which chart shows the survey result about school-night sleep?
A. How long do students sleep on school nights? B. How long do students sleep on school nights?
C. How long do students sleep on school nights? D. How long do students sleep on school nights?
62. What does Mary mean by saying “My grades didn’t change, but my mornings did”?
A. She started to read books in bed at night.
B. She had more free time before breakfast.
C. She became better at all her school subjects now.
D. She got up more easily and felt better in the morning.
63. What can we learn from paragraph 2 and 3?
A. Homework is the No.1 reason why students go to bed late at night.
B. Fewer students play games and watch short videos than reading.
C. With less sleep, students may find it harder to remember things.
D. Your brain will not work at all if you don’t sleep well enough.
64. If there is another report from the school newspaper next week, what may it be about?
A. What should students like Mary do to improve grades at school?
B. What can schools and parents do to help with the sleeping problem?
C. What do other students do to work out their sleeping problem?
D. Why is going to bed late bad for students’ health and study?

Did you notice before that you feel happier on sunny days but want to stay in bed on rainy days? You are not alone. Weather does affect how we feel and think.
Sunshine is good for our mind. When sunlight touches our skin, our body makes vitamin D. This vitamin helps our brain release serotonin (释放血清素), making us feel happy, calm (平静的) and focused. That is why many people feel full of energy on sunny days.
Rainy days, however, can do the opposite (相反). When the sky turns gray and there is less light, our brain makes less serotonin and more melatonin (褪黑素). Melatonin can make us feel sleepy. And it also makes us tired or a little sad. But here is something interesting: some people love the sound of rain. To them, it feels calm and helps them relax.
Snowy days bring a mix of feelings. Most children can’t wait for the snow. They can build snowmen and have snowball fights happily. But for adults, heavy snow can cause problems and make travel difficult.
Extreme (极端的) weather can also affect our mental (心理的) health. When it gets very hot, we may feel uncomfortable and get angry easily. Heavy rains can bring feelings of fear and worry. And for some, just the sound of strong winds can make them scared.
The good news is that we can learn to manage (管理) our feelings. On dark, rainy days, we can turn on bright lights or do something we enjoy. When the sun is shining, getting outside is a great choice. Once we know how weather affects us, we can take small steps to help ourselves stay happy.
