Every morning Mario visited his neighbor, Mr. Harper. Together they sat at the edge of his garden on the hill, looking down at the port (港口).
They made a game of noticing Mario’s dad as he unloaded the morning catch, and Mr. Harper’s daughter, Fiona, as she cleaned the fish one after another. Mario’s dad loved the ocean. He’d say, “Listen, Mario, the ocean’s saying good morning.” The waves would whisper: O-mor-ning. O-mor-ning. Mario always returned the greeting, “Good morning, ocean.” But on the day the big wave came, the ocean didn’t whisper. It roared (咆哮). Everyone lost someone that day. It took Mario’s dad, Fiona, and it even took Mario’s voice. Silence hung over the village like a dark, heavy cloud.
Spring came. Here and there stood peach trees that broke into beautiful flowers of pink. One day, Tap-tap-tap. Bang-bang-bang. Mario watched from his window. Mr. Harper was building something in his garden. But that? It was a phone booth (电话亭), painted white and with many panes of glass. Mr. Harper went inside and his voice floated out. “Fiona? It’s your father. I miss you.” Mario couldn’t understand what he was saying. Fiona had been taken away by the ocean, just like Mario’s dad. When Mr. Harper left, Mario crept inside. An old-fashioned phone sat on a table. No plugs, no wires. It was a phone connected to nowhere.
Mr. Harper visited his phone booth every day. Soon other villagers did too. They lifted the receiver to their ears and their voices floated on the wind.
“Hello, cousin. Today I fixed the boat. I’ll fish again soon.”
“Sister, how’re you? I rode your bike today. It fits me now.”
For the first time since the big wave came, Mario wanted to use his voice. He went down to the port and screamed at the ocean. “Bring our people back!” Still, the waves lapped gently. O-mor-ning. O-mor-ning. Mr.Harper’s phone booth sat high on the hill like a lighthouse. Mario walked up the hill and finally stopped at the door of the white phone booth. It was a place he had visited but never truly entered. Taking a deep breath, he pulled the door, lifted the receiver to his ear and said. “Dad. It’s Mario. Today, I screamed at the ocean. Still, it whispered O-mor-ning. O-mor-ning.” Tears filled his eyes. “Dad, I miss you,” he said softly. Then he walked out of the booth.
The dark and heavy clouds gradually faded away and life was quietly coming back to the village.

A recent survey shows that a quarter of people aged 18 to 34 never answer the phone. Instead, they often ignore (忽视) the ringing, reply with text, or search for the number online if they don’t recognize it. While talking on the phone is common for older generations, most young people prefer texting to phone calls. This change has given rise to a generation of texters. For them, mobile phone calls are kept only for emergencies, and landlines (座机) are mainly used to speak with grandparents.
Psychologist Elena Touroni mentions that young people find answering the phone strange because it’s not a habit they’ve developed. They will fear the worst when their phone starts ringing. More than half of them connect unexpected calls with bad news. Another researcher Eloise Skinner explains that this worry about calls comes from a sense of foreboding. Skinner adds that as our lives get busier, we have less time to call a friend just to talk about our daily life. Therefore, phone calls are used for very important news, which is often difficult and challenging to discuss through texting.
Jack Longley, 26, shares this view, adding that he never replies to unknown numbers because they are likely cheaters or salespeople. For him, it’s easier to ignore calls than sift (筛选) through the noise to find legitimate (合法的) ones.
Many conversations now take place on social media where it’s easier to send pictures together with texts. This communication style allows young people to join in conversations whenever they like and give more thoughtful replies. Still, with a growing preference for text-based communication, we must consider whether we are losing the ability to have unplanned and informal talks. Skinner warns that if this continues, “we might lose a sense of closeness or connection.” “When we communicate by speaking, we feel more connected emotionally and personally,” she adds. “This connection can make us feel pleased.”
Just as people refused the change from fax (传真) to email 25 years ago—a change that finally made communication more convenient—we may now need to recognize the power of text. Probably it’s time to consider leaving behind the “fearful” phone calls, just as we stopped using the fax machine in the 1990s.
17. What does the underlined word “foreboding” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. A feeling that something bad will happen. B. A habit that is hard to develop.
C. A worry about talking to strangers. D. A thought that phone calls waste time.
18. What can we know about Jack Longley?
A. He never talks to anyone he doesn’t know.
B. He thinks all the salespeople calling him are cheaters.
C. He believes refusing unknown calls saves him trouble.
D. He finds making phone calls is more difficult than texting.
19. The following sentence can be put at the beginning of ________.
However, not speaking on the phone doesn’t mean that young people aren’t connecting with their friends.
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 4 D. Paragraph 5
20. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. showing why phone calls make young people feel stressed
B. discussing the advantages of texting and making phone calls
C. warning that young people are losing the ability to communicate
D. explaining why young people avoid calls and suggesting accepting the change

When people think of ancient Chinese immortals (仙人), they usually imagine perfect people who live in the clouds. However, a popular animated movie (动画电影) changed that view this summer. The film All wishes Come True! came to theaters in July and quickly won over millions of audience.
With a high score of 8.2 on Douban, the movie became the dark horse of the summer. Rather than showing them as faraway characters, the story focuses on the Eight Immortals when they were still ordinary (普通的) humans with real flaws (缺点) and funny moments.
Director (导演) Mu Zhengyang wanted these traditional characters to connect with young people up on Chinese classics,” Mu said, “I always wondered why no one made a movie about the Eight Immortals.” To create a special look, the team studied traditional Chinese paintings. Each character wears clothes with special details, like lotus flowers and patterns of medicinal plants. The action in the movie is exciting as well. Kung fu masters created different fighting styles for each hero based on their personalities. Lü Dongbin uses formal and careful moves, while Tieguai Li uses wild, street-style moves. With bright traditional colors, every fight feels lively.
At its heart, the movie asks a question: What does it mean to be a hero? “Flying on clouds doesn’t make you a true immortal,” Director Mu explained that being a real hero means having the courage to stand up for others.” He wants people to know that doing the right thing always matters, even if results take time. Mu added, “Someone told me they decided to become a kinder person after watching the movie. That is exactly it!”
Now the movie is reaching more audiences abroad. When people around the world meet these characters, they can share the same laughter and warmth. After all, the greatest legends are never about perfect gods, but ordinary people who choose to be brave.
56. When did the movie come to theaters?

13. What’s the right order of the events?
a. Mario watched Mr. Harper build something in his garden.
b. Mario walked down to the port and shouted at the ocean.
c. Mario entered the white phone booth and spoke.
d. The big wave took Mario’s dad and Fiona away.
e. Mario saw Mr. Harper talk inside the phone booth.
A. d→a→e→b→c B. d→e→a→b→c
C. a→d→e→b→c D. a→d→b→e→c
14. How did Mario feel after he spoke in the white phone booth?
A. Surprised. B. Relaxed. C. Disappointed. D. Excited.

B. The villagers went to the booth to share feelings with the dead.
C. The phone booth finally brought the lost people back to the village.
D. Mr. Harper built the phone booth to help Mario find his voice again.
16. What’s the best title for the passage?

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述巨浪夺走村民亲人后,Harper先生在山上搭建电话亭,村民在这里向逝去的亲人倾诉思念,慢慢走出悲伤的故事。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“It took Mario’s dad, Fiona, and it even took Mario’s voice.”可知,最先发生的是巨浪夺走了Mario的爸爸和Fiona;根据第三段“Mario watched from his window. Mr. Harper was building something in his garden.”可知,接下来Mario看到Harper先生在花园里建造东西;根据第三段“Mr. Harper went inside and his voice floated out. ‘Fiona? It’s your father. I miss you.’”可知,之后Mario看到Harper先生在建好的电话亭里说话;根据第七段“He went down to the port and screamed at the ocean.”可知,接着Mario去到港口对着大海大喊;根据第七段“Taking a deep breath, he pulled the door, lifted the receiver to his ear and said. ‘Dad. It’s Mario....’”可知,最后Mario走进白色电话亭和父亲说话。由此得出事件正确顺序为d→a→e→b→c。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第七段“Tears filled his eyes. ‘Dad, I miss you,’ he said softly. Then he walked out of the booth.”以及第八段“The dark and heavy clouds gradually faded away and life was quietly coming back to the village.”可知,文中用“厚重的乌云逐渐散去”象征悲伤的情绪消散,可推知Mario在电话亭中说出了压抑已久的心里话后,内心的痛苦得到释放,感觉放松了。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Soon other villagers did too. They lifted the receiver to their ears and their voices floated on the wind.”,以及后文村民对着电话说的“Hello, cousin. Today I fixed the boat. I’ll fish again soon.”和“Sister, how’re you? I rode your bike today. It fits me now.”,可推知村民们去电话亭是为了和逝去的亲人分享自己的生活与感受。
