Kenyan long-distance runner Sabastian Sawe made history on 26 April at the London Marathon. He became the first person to run a marathon in under two hours in an official race. He clocked 1:59:30, breaking the two hour barrier (大关).
His family, watching from their village in Kenya, were overjoyed. “We are so happy that we have no words to say,” said his father, Simon Sawe. “When he comes home, the whole community will celebrate him.” His mother added, “We were jumping in celebration even before he finished the race. We were so, so happy.”
Sawe’s run beat the old world record of 2:00:35, set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023. After the race, Sawe gave his win to the running community. “I think I’ve made history today,” he said. “It shows the new generation that nothing is impossible. It all depends on preparation and discipline (自律).”
Kenyan President William Ruto called the achievement “history made” and said Sawe had strengthened Kenya’s place as a global athletics power. Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei praised the record as a proud moment for the country. Benjamin Franklin was not only a Founding Father of the United States, but also a great scientist and inventor. One of his greatest contributions was the lightning rod, which has protected many buildings from lightning strikes (雷击).
In the 18th century, lightning was a serious danger. When it hit a tall building, it could easily start a fire. People had no way to protect their homes and buildings. Franklin became deeply interested in electricity and began to wonder: was lightning a form of electricity?
To find out, Franklin designed a famous experiment in 1752. He made a kite using wood and silk and tied a metal key to the rope. Then he waited for a stormy day to fly it. He did not fly it when lightning was striking. Instead, he flew it near rain clouds. Electricity from the air travelled down the wet rope to the key, creating tiny sparks (火花). The experiment proved that lightning was indeed electricity.
Based on this discovery, Franklin invented the lightning rod. A lightning rod is a metal stick placed at the top of a building. It is connected to the ground by a wire. When lightning strikes, the rod safely guides the electricity into the earth, protecting the building.
Franklin’s invention quickly spread around the world. It saved many lives and buildings. His curiosity and courage made him one of the most respected scientists of his time. Even today, his experiment is remembered as a significant moment in the history of science.
16. What’s Paragraph 1 mainly about?

A. To show that kites could fly in storms.
B. To find a new way to protect tall buildings.

D. To test if lightning was a form of electricity.
19. Why did the author write this passage?

The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has successfully raised (养育) a baby warty frogfish from an egg. This is the biggest success of its kind in the world, and may help raise other sea creatures.
Warty frogfish are strange-looking. They have many small marks on their bodies. On their back is a lure (诱饵) shaped like a small fish. It attracts prey. They live in the waters where the Indian and Pacific Oceans meet.
In September 2025, the female frogfish at Shedd produced tens of thousands of eggs. The male fertilized (受精) them. Workers moved the eggs to a special tank, hoping to raise them. No one had ever raised this kind of fish in a tank.
After a few days, thousands came out of the eggs. The babies, called larvae, were weak, like tadpoles. The team chose 500 to focus on for the best chance.
Jenny Richards of Shedd said it was hard. In the wild, larvae float in the open sea, unlike in a tank. The team managed to control the water temperature, light, flow, and found the right food.
As they grew, their bodies changed greatly. They grew stronger, but most did not survive. This is normal.
After about 90 days, just one survived. Workers named it Domino. It is the size of a pea, bright yellow with orange spots. It looks like a tiny adult, has its own lure, and is learning to move around in the water area.
The aquarium says the knowledge from Domino will help raise other sea life. This is important as climate change brings challenges to the ocean creatures.
21. What does the underlined word “prey” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Small fish used as lures.
B. Animals hunted and eaten.
C. Plants growing in the ocean.
D. Other warty frogfish nearby.
22. Which of the following best describes the team’s success in raising the frogfish?
A. Tiring. B. Simple. C. Historic. D. Normal.
23. Why did the team choose to raise only 500 larvae?
A. Because the tank was too small.
B. Because the rest were not healthy.
C. Because the male fish fertilized 500.
D. Because they could be looked after better.
24. What made raising the baby fish difficult?
A. The food was hard to find.
B. The water was not clean enough.
C. Tank conditions differed from the wild.
D. The larvae often fought with each other.
25. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Careful work can lead to success.
B. Sea animals are easy to raise.
C. Wild animals should live in tanks.
D. Small animals are always weak.

A family rule that touched me
Dear classmates,
I would like to share with you a family rule that touched me deeply.
In my family, we have a simple rule: no phones at the dinner table. Firstly, I found it very hard to follow. I often felt bored. But now I began to enjoy the moment. We talked about our school life and shared funny stories. Not only did the rule free us from screens, but it also brought our hearts closer. It was this rule that made me realize the true value of family time.
Now I see that a family rule is not a restriction, but an expression of love. That’s all. Thank you for listening!
A family rule that touched me
Dear classmates,
I would like to share with you a family rule that touched me deeply.
In my family, we have a rule that we should say “thank you” when others help us. Firstly, I thought it was just a simple word and did not mean much. However, as I grew older, I found it very important. This rule taught me to respect and care about others. For example, when my parents cook meals for me, I always say “thank you”. A small word can bring people closer and make our family warmer.
I think this rule has helped me become a more polite person. That’s all. Thank you for listening!
