We didn’t talk about business. Our task was simple: ____1____. Our tools: uplifting greeting cards and money to buy a cup of coffee—anonymously—for eight customers. Adam ____2____ eight greeting cards called Hello Kindness Cards. One said, “You are loved.” Another read, “I believe in you.” My favourite is “You are magic.”. “We’re going to divide these cards up and write notes on them,” he told me. “We should be daily joy-spreaders. She’s spent the summer eating berries and roots. Now she’s eating all the fish she can catch. She needs fat to put on weight and make milk for newborn bears this winter. Black bears live throughout most of North America, including northern Mexico. They usually live in forests and are excellent tree climbers. Although they are called black bears, they can be blue-gray, brown, or even white. Black bears are not picky eaters. Their goal is to store up as much fat as possible before their winter sleep. In late November and early December, black bears head to their caves to sleep away the winter, or hibernate (冬眠). Their body temperature is lowered, and their breathing slows down while they live off the huge amounts of body fat they stored up during the summer and fall. This way, they don’t have to go out and look for food in the cold. Male black bears leave their caves around mid-March, but females stay a little longer. That’s because they give birth around January and want to give their kids time to grow bigger before heading back outside in the early spring. Little black bears stay with Mom for one to three years while she teaches them how to live in the wild. Then, when they’re ready, they head off to survive in the woods alone until they start a family of their own. 11. Why do black bears catch fish? A. They want to become heavier. B. Fish is their favorite food. C. They prefer food with less fat. D. Newborn black bears feed on fish. 12. What do we know from Paragraph 2? A. Black bears are all black. B. Many black bears live in the UK. C. Black bears pick food from trees. D. Black bears are good at climbing. 13. What is a hibernating black bear like? A. They don’t breathe. B. They only sleep in the daytime. C. They don’t eat any food. D. They have a high body temperature. 14. When would a female black bear probably leave her cave? A. In January. B. In April. C. In July. In 1752, workers digging in Herculaneum found a home that had belonged to a rich family. Inside, workers discovered a large number of scrolls. Most of the scrolls were made from papyrus a paper-like material. The heat from the volcano had burned the scrolls so much that they looked like thick pieces of charcoal. The scrolls are so weak that just touching them could make them fall apart. So scientists have been looking for ways to read the scrolls without opening them. Brent Seales, a computer scientist at the University of Kentucky, has been working on this study for over 20 years. Dr Seales has developed a method of using a special scanner to take 3-D X-ray pictures of a papyrus scroll. Then he uses a computer program to “open” the scroll and get pictures of what it looks like inside. His team once used this method to read a burnt scroll found near the Dead Sea. Though Dr Seales was making progress, it was slow going. Then Dr Seales met with two businessmen. They had the idea of creating a contest for discovering the meaning of the scrolls. The contest, called the Vesuvius Challenge, was announced in March 2023. The contest offered large prizes to people who solved certain challenges in opening the scrolls. About 1,500 teams participated in the contest. These people shared information as they made progress, so everyone could build on those ideas. In August, 2023, Casey Handmer found a pattern that could show where the ink had been on the scrolls. Following Mr Handmer’s lead, Luke Farritor found a whole word—“porphyras”, which means “purple”. This was the first word ever read from these ancient scrolls. Soon afterward, Youssef Nader used a different method to find the same word. For their efforts, Mr Handmer and Mr Nader each won $10,000. Mr Farritor won $40,000. 16. When did Pompeii and Herculaneum disappear? A. About 20 years ago. B. About 600 years ago. C. About 1,000 years ago. D. About 2,000 years ago. 17. How does Dr Seales get pictures on the scrolls? A. By holding a contest. B. By opening the scrolls. C. By taking 3-D X-ray pictures. D. By washing up the scrolls. 18. Why did Dr Seales hold the contest? A. To take pictures of the scrolls. B. To learn the word“porphyras”. C. To find more scrolls in the home. D. To encourage the study of the scrolls. 19. What does the underlined phrase “participated in” mean? A. Played games in. B. Took part in. C. Took care of. D. Paid attention to. 20. What is the best title for the passage? A. Reading the ancient scrolls without opening them. B. Ancient scrolls looking like thick pieces of charcoal. C. Scientists looking for ways to open the ancient scrolls. D. Cities disappearing after Mount Vesuvius’ breaking out. 【答案】16. D 17. C 18. D 19. B 20. There are people complaining about life often, having bad habits and bringing you down. The emotions they spread influence your thoughts and actions in a bad way, so avoiding the sources of negative energy is necessary if you want to be more successful. Everyone can be easily affected by negative emotions unless you learn how to deal with them. The following ways will show you how positive people deal with negativity, so you can apply them to your life. Spend time in nature. Being in nature clears your mind and relaxes your body. Positive people spend a part of their day getting outside to enjoy the beauty of our planet. It’s a great way to charge (给……充电) your batteries! Practise positive thinking. Thoughts influence your actions. So if you think negatively, there will be no bright future ahead of you. Positive people don't believe in the excuses they come up with in their minds. By finding the good side of any problem, they make sure they are mentally prepared for success. ▲ Your surroundings have a great influence on you. If you spend time with positive people, you are more likely to be happy and satisfied. On the other hand, if you are too close to those who always complain, you will have a hard time removing the negativity from your life. Accept failure. Positive people embrace (接受) failure as they realize it’s the only way to learn and grow. Whenever they fail, they work hard to get to the top again instead of giving up. Even though failure brings negative emotions, they believe it is brief and will go away quickly. To speed up the process, they keep thinking positively. 21. Negative people are likely to __________. A. get success B. spend time outside C. believe in themselves D. make you upset 22. A great way to make you active again is __________. As children get older, they would like to develop stronger opinions of how they want to dress. ____26____ A survey of children aged 7 to 12 shows that most start saying no to parents’ clothing choices when they are about seven years old. Do you think parents should choose clothes for you? Advice is helpful. Parents can help you choose the right clothes because they have more experience. It’s part of their duty like making sure you eat healthy food. ____27____ If parents don’t help children choose clothes, they may wear things that aren’t reasonable. Young people can feel stressed to follow trends. Choosing clothes can be a joint effort: children say what they prefer, but parents have the final say. ____28____ There’s always a way to express yourself. It’s a personal decision. B. B Mount Vesuvius broke out in 79 AD, ending the Roman cities Pompeii and Herculaneum. 17.
