Before going abroad, I was very concerned about culture shock, but it turned out that I had a harder time dealing with reverse (逆向的) culture shock when returning home. Coming back has been a tougher transition than expected. It’s not just about transitioning back to home life; it’s also about handling the strange situation of being a different person in the same old environment. I am most terrified of waking up in a few months and feeling like I’m the same person I was before I studied abroad.
This situation is especially strange with people who have known me for a long time, like my parents, who witnessed all my major life changes before this one. I didn’t realize how much I’d changed until I interacted with them and close friends. Despite only being away for three and a half months, I quickly noticed the differences between who I was before and who I am now. Over the past few weeks at home, I’ve been wondering how to maintain the positive changes and qualities gained from my semester abroad.
I’ve realized that surroundings and situations greatly influence mindset, and keeping a certain mindset while losing its corresponding (相对应的) environment is challenging. For instance, being in Madrid taught me to be more relaxed and stress-free. However, returning to Penn State with its demanding course load makes maintaining that mentality (心态) difficult. I’ve come to realize the problem that perpetual stress about school isn’t healthy, especially after experiencing a semester of travel, fun, and academic success. Therefore, I’ve decided to work hard and study as usual but occasionally give myself a break, and do what I can to avoid getting over-stressed about tests and assignments. This means I will put in effort when necessary in order to make sure I am always caught up or ahead of class material.
Coming home has been more challenging than expected, but I’m confident I’ll get through it in the next few weeks. Nevertheless, I’m determined to maintain the important lessons I learned about myself and others in Madrid.
4. What was the author’s biggest concern when returning home?
A. Going back to his original self. B. Adapting to new surroundings.
C. Experiencing culture shock. D. Missing old acquaintances.
5. What did the author realize after returning home?
A. He should make his family familiar with his positive changes.
B. He should change his mentality to care less about his study.
C. He should adapt his mindset to fit into the old learning environment.
D. He should apply himself to his study to stay ahead of class.
6. What does the underlined word “perpetual” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Current. B. Improper. C. Unnecessary. D. Continuous.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The sufferings of reverse culture shock. B. The reflections on personal growth.
C. The adaptations to new environments. D. The success in academic performance.
C
If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch a performance of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you’d voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds.
The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best-known example is science fiction novel The Time Machine, written by H. G. Wells and published in 1895. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, put forward by Wells, now universally refers to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.
But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as short cuts to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship — going at nearly the speed of light, though building such a spaceship wouldn’t of course be simple.
Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time?
And would you really like to visit the future? In H. G. Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles (触角).
If that’s what’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.
8. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. There are films, comic books and poems adapted from the novel The Time Machine.
B. The Time Machine is one of the bestselling science fiction novels.
C. Works of literature about time travel first appeared one hundred years ago.
D. It was H. G. Wells who invented the term “time machine”.
9. What can we know about Einstein’s and Hawking’s theories?
A. They suggest the possibility of time travel.
B. They have pushed the invention of the first spaceship.
C. They have been proved wrong by some time travelers.
D. They have similarities because both are based on experiments.
10. In paragraph 4, which idea does “grandfather paradox” probably refer to?
A. The traveler is prevented from meeting his grandfather.
B. The traveler goes back in time to seek for his grandfather.
C. The grandfather’s death makes the traveler’s birth impossible.
D. The reunion of the traveler and his grandfather brings happiness.
11. According to the passage, what is probably the author’s attitude towards time travel?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned.
D
We all agree that too much anxiety has nothing good to offer and is certainly not a welcome visitor in our lives. There are endless and heartbreaking stories about how anxiety can ruin a moment, a day, or even a life.
However, a growing number of researchers are getting the message out that anxiety is not always our enemy. Kian Patton, an expert on mental health, believes that anxiety and other unpleasant feelings actually have a role to play because we all need a bit of it to be our best selves.
Let’s look at some positive sides that anxiety has to offer. A bit of anxiety prevents us from possible dangers. Those of us with some anxiety carefully consider the effects of our behavior on others, which prevents us from becoming a bully and hurting classmates. Anxiety can and does remind us to get things done. We tend to be better prepared for the next test, the next presentation, the next day, and even life in general.
“If we pay no attention to our anxiety, we may lose these benefits, and can make things worse,” says Gaia Megan, a professor in Psychological Science. Ignoring unpleasant feelings just strengthens our worries, because we are not solving the problem. According to Gaia, the key to reducing unease is to manage anxiety by “worrying well”. But how?
The trick, as she says, is to listen to anxiety, and then direct it to make changes. For example, a young man who worried about everything that could go wrong in his life was kept sleepless at night. After talking to Gaia Megan, he turned “what ifs?” anxiety into a goal-directed to-do list: “If this were to happen, then what could I do? Well, I could ...”
By worrying well, we can feel lighter in our mind and have a clearer map of what we should do. “Then,” Gaia advises, “let it go. It is a wave that you need to learn to ride.”
12. What is people’s common opinion about anxiety?
A. It satisfies some of our needs. B. It creates problems in our lives.
C. It is the most unpleasant feeling. D. It helps us sort out the messages.
13. What can anxiety help people do?
A. Avoid possible dangers. B. Make good friends.
C. Have a successful life. D. Create new ideas.
14. How can we manage anxiety according to Gaia Megan?
A. By changing our sleep patterns. B. By listening to others’ opinions.
C. By ignoring unpleasant feelings. D. By directing it in a positive way.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Women Scientists on Mental Health B. Facts and Benefits of Fear and Anxiety
C. The Unsolved Mystery: Why do We Worry D. The Upside of Anxiety: How to Worry Well

The last lesson of the day was PE class. Emma was skipping rope on the playground, surrounded by several classmates. She was quite good at it. The rope spun (旋转) quickly as she jumped swiftly. When time was up, the counter showed 220 skips. Feeling proud, Emma flashed a victory smile to the crowd. Just then, the bell rang — class was over. It was time to give her answer to Ms. Wilson.
That morning, Ms. Wilson had asked her if she would like to take on the task of the class bulletin board (板报) for the upcoming competition. It was Lily who usually handled it, but she had taken sick leave, and someone else needed to step in. It never occurred to Emma that Ms. Wilson would think of her. She responded nervously, insisting that her handwriting was terrible. But Ms. Wilson reassured her, saying she believed in her ability and encouraged her to think it over and that they would talk about it again after school.
Now, walking towards the teachers' office, Emma felt anxious. The thought of her poor handwriting being put up on the wall for everyone to comment on made her stomach turn. No. Never would she let that happen. She quickened her pace and ran across the sports ground.
Emma was about to pass the sandpit (沙坑) when someone caught her attention. It was Tim from class 5. She thought that Tim had never been good at long jump, but he just kept practicing it on and on. Out of curiosity, she went over to ask what he was doing. Tim explained that no one else in his class had signed up for the long-jump event, and without a participant, their class wouldn’t get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the headteacher asked if anyone would give it a try, he volunteered. Emma reminded him that he wasn’t good at it, but Tim simply said that he knew that — and that it wasn’t about being the best, but about trying and doing his part for his class. Then he went back to practicing. What a similar dilemma they were both in!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Standing there, Emma watched Tim practicing hard with great patience.

A 5. C 6. D 7. A
根据第一段“Before going abroad, I was very concerned about culture shock, but it turned out that I had a harder time dealing with reverse (逆向的) culture shock when returning home. Coming back has been a tougher transition than expected. It’s not just about transitioning back to home life; it’s also about handling the strange situation of being a different person in the same old environment. I am most terrified of waking up in a few months and feeling like I’m the same person I was before I studied abroad.”(在出国之前,我非常担心文化冲击,但事实证明,当我回国时,我很难应对逆向文化冲击。 故选A项。
根据第二段中“Over the past few weeks at home, I’ve been wondering how to maintain the positive changes and qualities gained from my semester abroad.”(在过去的几周里,我一直在思考如何保持我在国外学期所获得的积极变化和品质)以及第三段中“I’ve realized that surroundings and situations greatly influence mindset, and keeping a certain mindset while losing its corresponding(相对应的)environment is challenging.”(我意识到环境和情形对心态有很大的影响,在失去相应环境的同时保持某种心态是很有挑战性的)可知,作者回国后意识到他应该调整自己的心态,以适应原来的学习环境。
根据划线单词句中“…especially after experiencing a semester of travel, fun, and academic success.”(尤其是在经历了一个学期的旅行、娱乐和学业成功之后)以及第三段中“Therefore, I’ve decided to work hard and study as usual but occasionally give myself a break, and do what I can to avoid getting over-stressed about tests and assignments. This means I will put in effort when necessary in order to make sure I am always caught up or ahead of class material.”(因此,我决定像往常一样努力学习,偶尔让自己休息一下,尽我所能避免考试和作业带来的过度压力。
根据全文内容以及第一段“Before going abroad, I was very concerned about culture shock, but it turned out that I had a harder time dealing with reverse (逆向的) culture shock when returning home.

根据文章第三段“Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship — going at nearly the speed of light, though building such a spaceship wouldn’t of course be simple. (爱因斯坦的相对论允许在极端情况下进行时间旅行。斯蒂芬·霍金说,你可以乘坐一艘非常快的宇宙飞船前往未来——以接近光速的速度飞行,尽管建造这样一艘宇宙飞船当然不容易。)”可知,爱因斯坦和霍金的理论表明了时间旅行存在可能性。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第四段“It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time? (它问的是,如果一个时间旅行者回到过去,他的祖父因为某种原因被杀,从而阻止了自己的出生,会发生什么。如果时间旅行者没有出生,他怎么能回到过去呢?)”可知,这里“grandfather paradox”指的是“祖父的死能够使旅行者的出生变得不可能”。
【11题详解】

The Upside of Anxiety: How to Worry Well
B 13. A 14. D 15. D

通读全文,尤其是根据第二段“However, a growing number of researchers are getting the message out that anxiety is not always our enemy. Kian Patton, an expert on mental health, believes that anxiety and other unpleasant feelings actually have a role to play because we all need a bit of it to be our best selves.(然而,越来越多的研究人员正在传达这样的信息:焦虑并不总是我们的敌人。心理健康专家基安·帕顿认为,焦虑和其他不愉快的感觉实际上起着一定的作用,因为我们都需要一点焦虑来成为最好的自己。)”以及最后一段“By worrying well, we can feel lighter in our mind and have a clearer map of what we should do. “Then,” Gaia advises, “let it go. It is a wave that you need to learn to ride.”(通过好好担心,我们可以感到心情轻松,对我们应该做什么有一个更清晰的地图。‘那么,’盖亚建议道,‘放手吧。这是一个你需要学会驾驭的波浪。’)”可知,文章主要讲述焦虑的好处以及我们应该怎样利用焦虑,将焦虑转化为积极的力量,让我们成为更好的自己。所以D项“The Upside of Anxiety: How to Worry Well(焦虑的好处:如何好好地担心)”能够概括文章主旨,适合作为最佳标题。故选D项。

Should autonomous vehicles be widely promoted?
Last week our class held a debate on whether autonomous vehicles should be widely promoted.
Supporters believe that self-driving cars can cut human mistakes, which helps guarantee road safety. Besides, they bring convenience for the elderly and the disabled. However, opponents argue the technology is not fully developed. What’s more, it may cause many drivers to lose their jobs.
In my opinion, we can promote them step by step after perfecting the technology. And related rules should also be set up to avoid possible risks.

Standing there, Emma watched Tim practicing patiently and hard. When she saw Tim start and jump again and again, and get up immediately even if he fell, Emma felt a touch in her heart, and the thought of refusing began to waver. Tim was not good at long jump, but he was willing to try for his class. Even though her handwriting was poor, why couldn’t she try to overcome it? She realized that Ms. Wilson’s trust was an opportunity, and she shouldn’t back down because of a little flaw. She decided to change her mind and accept the task of the bulletin board.
Emma walked into the teachers’ office with a determined look on her face. Seeing Ms. Wilson, Emma took a deep breath and said firmly, “Ms. Wilson, I’ve thought it through. I’m willing to take charge of the class bulletin board!” Ms. Wilson showed a relieved smile. Emma then explained that it was Tim practicing long jump for his class that made her understand that what matters is trying, not being perfect. She also took the initiative to say that she would spend more time practicing writing to ensure that the bulletin board was well done and live up to the teacher’s trust. Ms. Wilson praised her growth repeatedly.
