On May 24 night, the Long March-2F Y23 rocket launched Shenzhou-23 manned spacecraft into planned orbit. The successful mission started China’s 2026 manned space tasks with many technical breakthroughs.
The most important upgrade lies in the cabin windows. After window cracks led to China’s first emergency manned launch, engineers redesigned the structure. The old single protective glass was replaced with two heat-resistant layers plus an inner protective layer. The new structure effectively resists impacts from tiny space pieces and better guarantees astronauts’ safety.
The new spaceship also saw a huge leap in return cargo capacity. Earlier Shenzhou craft could only bring roughly 50 kilograms of samples back. After upgrades, the return capsule can carry over 100 kilograms of payload, with cargo room three times larger. Inside the cabin, new light-weight screens help watch flight information. New tools quickly check whether the cabin keeps air inside. New control sticks are easy for astronauts to hold and operate.
Shenzhou-23 completed China’s first 3.5-hour fast radial docking (对接) with Tiangong space station. Different from front-rear docking, radial docking has no fixed holding point. The craft must keep adjusting its flight posture and orbit under continuous dynamic control. Its guidance system balances fuel consumption in real time, requiring high speed, accuracy and self-operation.
Besides hardware improvements, nine scientific experiments are onboard, with rice cultivation standing out as a landmark project. For the first time, researchers will complete two continuous generations of rice growth in orbit: rice will mature and be harvested in space, then its seeds replanted for a second growth cycle. The data will reveal how long-term weightlessness influences rice genes and growth, laying groundwork for future food planting on the Moon and Mars.
Another key test targets new solar cells. Featuring high energy efficiency, light weight and outstanding power output, they are viewed as ideal power supplies for future space facilities. On this mission, the space station runs its first in-orbit dynamic test of such cells, recording efficiency loss in space to analyze their long-term service performance.
24. How does the author develop Paragraph 2?
A. By comparing different theories.
B. By analyzing the causes of an emergency.
C. By making a list of several potential risks.
D. By stating a problem and offering its solution.
25. What can be learned about the upgrade of return capsule?
A. It doubles cargo space.
B. It prevents air from escaping.
C. It helps monitor and operate inside the craft.
D. It allows researchers to skip sample selection.
26. What makes radial docking much harder than front and rear docking?
A. It needs frequent changes with no fixed positions.
B. Its guidance system works inaccurately.
C. It relies on stable parking positions.
D. It requires fewer fuel adjustments.
27. Why are two space projects mentioned in the last two paragraphs?
A. To show space researches serve long-term space goals.
B. To prove biological tests matter more than power tests.
C. To confirm there are more experiments than earlier crafts.
D. To explain what great difficulties space experiments meet.

When danger approaches, many creatures seem to follow the ancient saying that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Researchers have recently been finding complex ways that animals communicate with other species in such situations.
For example, a recent study in Nature Ecology & Evolution documented more than 20 bird species on four continents that give off virtually identical “whining” calls when they spot brood parasites (巢寄生物) such as cuckoos. “That call is essentially the word for ‘cuckoo,’ ” says study co-lead author James Kennerley, a wildlife biologist at Cornell University. “And it’s rounding up individuals to come together against this common enemy.”
Brood parasites lay eggs in other birds’ nests, tricking the host parents into raising their chicks for them. At a field site in Australia, Kennerley has witnessed individuals from a dozen or more species attack a cuckoo in response to a chorus of whining calls. These attacks can be so violent that Kennerley and his coworkers need to cage the cuckoo used in their experiments to protect it.
Many birds also share a common vocabulary for predators (捕食者). Research by wildlife ecologist Erick Greene, a professor at the University of Montana, and others shows that various songbirds produce recognizable “seet” calls to alert others to an eagle in flight. The calls are at a frequency too high for eagles to detect well, so the predators remain oblivious as information about their arrival shoots through the forest. If the eagle stops on a branch, songbirds switch to “mobbing” calls, a distinct vocalization that, as Greene puts it, “draws in the other birds to drive that eagle off.”
Cooperative defense is not the only reason for cross-species communication. Among other things, it may help birds enhance food intake. A recent study found that when seabirds with good vision, such as albatrosses, hunt with seabirds with strong senses of smell, such as petrels, they both have far greater success at catching small shellfish.
“Clearly, information is constantly traded between different kinds of animals, which is a fundamental ecological phenomenon,” Greene says. “It can be life-saving.”
28. What is the main purpose of birds’ “whining” calls?
A. To attract female mates. B. To indicate food sources.
C. To defend their own nests. D. To signal their newborns.
29. What does the underlined word “oblivious” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Unbearable. B. Unaware. C. Uncertain. D. Unconcerned.
30. Why do seabirds like albatrosses and petrels cooperate?
A. They learn hunting skills from each other.
B. They need to establish a shared territory.
C. They defend against common predators.
D. They try to improve hunting efficiency.
31. What do Greene’s words in the last paragraph stress?
A. The diversity of ecological phenomena.
B. The rareness of multispecies cooperation.
C. The complexity of cross-species interactions.
D. The significance of interspecies communication.

Astronomers have found tentative but strong evidence of a planet passing in front of a star outside the Milky Way Galaxy, pointing to a major new discovery in space exploration. If proven true, this newly found object in the Whirlpool Galaxy may become the first planet ever detected outside our galaxy, greatly broadening the range of known planetary systems in the universe.
Generally, an exoplanet refers to a planet outside our solar system that moves around stars within the Milky Way. Before this discovery, all confirmed exoplanets were located within 3,000 light-years of Earth. In comparison, this new candidate planet is about 28 million light-years away, a distance far greater than that of any previously found exoplanet, which breaks the traditional limits of planetary research.
The research stands out for its new observation method. “We are trying to open up a whole new area for finding other worlds by searching for planet candidates at X-ray wavelengths, a strategy that makes it possible to discover them in other galaxies,” Rosanne Di Stefano, who led the study, said in a statement. Even so, scientists admit that it is extremely hard to finally confirm the existence of this distant planet.
“Unfortunately, to confirm that, we’re seeing a planet we would likely have to wait decades to see another transit (凌日),” co-author astrophysicist Nia Imara said in a statement. “And because of the uncertainties about how long it takes to orbit, we wouldn’t know exactly when to look, thus making accurate confirmation very difficult.”
Apart from observation difficulties, the possible planet also carries special scientific meaning. Scientists believe that if the planet exists, it must have survived a huge star explosion that formed a nearby black hole. Even though it has survived such a violent event, the planet still faces hidden dangers in the future. Its partner star may explode one day and send powerful radiation, which will seriously threaten the planet’s safety.
To improve this research, astronomers will examine large amounts of data collected by advanced space telescopes. They hope to find more planet candidates in distant galaxies. At the same time, they will continue to study star activities within the Milky Way, aiming to discover special planets in extreme space environments.
32. What can be inferred about this newly found planet candidate?
A. It orbits a star identical to the sun in our solar system.
B. Its existence has been proven by repeated observations.
C. It is far more distant than that of all previously found exoplanets.
D. It belongs to the ready-known planetary systems in the Milky Way.
33. Why is it hard to confirm the candidate planet’s existence according to Nia Imara?
A. The failure of advanced observational equipment.
B. Its extreme distance blocking cosmic signals.
C. The instability of its surrounding black hole.
D. The absence of predictable transit timing.
34. Which of the following best reflects the researchers’ attitude toward the new finding?
A. cautious and objective B. doubtful and negative
C. confident and convinced D. skeptical and indifferent
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The first confirmed planet discovered in the Whirlpool Galaxy
B. A potential planet beyond our galaxy draws scientists’ attention
C. X - ray - based efforts to hunt for extragalactic planet candidates
D. Challenges facing the research on far-away objects in the universe
Many people are eager to make changes and break their bad habits. Some are easier to shake than others. However, the tendency to procrastinate is among the stickiest. Whether it’s finishing a piece of work, sending an email or going for a run, some tasks can become unconquerable. The easiest way to deal with these tasks is to put them off until later or never at all. It’s procrastination. It is a specific form of delay that is both unnecessary and voluntary. 36 .
At its heart, procrastination is about avoidance. Rather than the task itself, it’s often the emotions attached to an activity that cause people to pause. 37 . When you’re faced with a broad question or topic to write about, the lack of clear instructions can produce a fear of not getting it right or of what might happen if you get it wrong.
The person procrastinating usually does so despite knowing that the task is important or valuable to them or others and that putting it off could be risky to them or others. Big projects may bring overpowered feelings which are likely to lead to procrastination. 38 . Answering an ordinary email from work, for example, may bring instant discomfort, so the urge to escape such negative emotion defeats one’s duty to complete the daily task.
Like any personality character, there are some biological connections. Research suggests that procrastination is linked to impatience on a genetic level. It may be a passed-down property. 39 . Environmental factors are just as important in shaping our response to tasks. Someone who doesn’t usually procrastinate can do so if they find themselves in a situation that exhausts their responding abilities, such as the death of a family member. 40 .
Of course, procrastination can pile on more pressures by leaving a task hanging over a person’s head, thus producing a negative cycle that can damage mental health, lower academic performance and lead to financial trouble.
A. However, the threat can also come from something tiny.
B. But that doesn’t mean you’re stuck and that’s who you are.
C. Chances are that you will find yourself supported by procrastination all along.
D. You will become increasingly frustrated with yourself for not getting the task done.
E. Procrastination becomes an easy and ‘dirty’ way of reaction when your handling
resources are maxed out.
F. Handling the first lines of a college essay may bring up feelings of self-doubt, for
example.
G. It isn’t caused by the person’s need to prioritize other tasks or by an unexpected
emergency.

根据第二段“‘That call is essentially the word for ‘cuckoo,’ ’ says study co-lead author James Kennerley, a wildlife biologist at Cornell University.‘And it’s rounding up individuals to come together against this common enemy.’ (‘那个叫声本质上就是‘杜鹃’这个词,’该研究的共同第一作者、康奈尔大学野生生物学家James Kennerley说。‘它召集个体团结起来对抗这个共同的敌人。’)”以及第三段“Brood parasites lay eggs in other birds’ nests, tricking the host parents into raising their chicks for them. (巢寄生物在其他鸟的巢中产卵,欺骗宿主父母为它们抚养幼鸟。)”可知,鸟类的“哀鸣”叫声是为了召集同伴共同防御巢寄生物,保护自己的巢穴。
29. 词句猜测题。根据第四段“The calls are at a frequency too high for eagles to detect well, so the predators remain oblivious as information about their arrival shoots through the forest. (这些叫声的频率太高,老鹰无法很好地察觉,因此当关于它们到来的信息在森林中迅速传播时,捕食者仍然oblivious。)”可知,由于叫声频率超出老鹰的感知范围,老鹰对鸟类的警报“毫无察觉”,“oblivious”意为“不知道的、未察觉的”,与“Unaware”意思最接近。
30. 细节理解题。根据第五段“Cooperative defense is not the only reason for cross-species communication. Among other things, it may help birds enhance food intake. A recent study found that when seabirds with good vision, such as albatrosses, hunt with seabirds with strong senses of smell, such as petrels, they both have far greater success at catching small shellfish. (合作防御并不是跨物种交流的唯一原因。除此之外,它还可能帮助鸟类增加食物摄入。最近一项研究发现,当视力良好的海鸟(如信天翁)与嗅觉灵敏的海鸟(如海燕)一起捕食时,它们捕捉小型贝类的成功率都要高得多。)”可知,信天翁和海燕合作是为了提高捕食效率。
31. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“‘Clearly, information is constantly traded between different kinds of animals, which is a fundamental ecological phenomenon,’ Greene says. ‘It can be life-saving.’ (‘很明显,信息在不同种类的动物之间不断交换,这是一种基本的生态现象,’格林说。‘这可能是救命的。’)”可知,格林的话强调了跨物种交流的重要性。

【导语】说明文。本文介绍了天文学家发现银河系外一颗候选行星的初步有力证据,介绍它距离远超以往系外行星、借助X射线观测,同时确认它的存在难度很大,科学家会继续搜集数据开展研究。
【详解】32. 推理判断题。根据第二段“In comparison, this new candidate planet is about 28 million light-years away, a distance far greater than that of any previously found exoplanet (相比之下,这颗新的候选行星距离地球约2800万光年,远比此前发现的任何一颗系外行星都要遥远)”可知,这颗新候选行星比之前发现的所有系外行星遥远得多。
根据第四段“And because of the uncertainties about how long it takes to orbit, we wouldn’t know exactly when to look, thus making accurate confirmation very difficult. (而且由于无法确定它的公转周期,我们无法准确知晓何时进行观测,这就使得精准确认其存在变得十分困难)”可知,无法预测凌日发生的时间,也就是缺少可预测的凌日时间,造成确认困难。
34. 推理判断题。根据第一段“Astronomers have found tentative but strong evidence (天文学家已经找到了初步但有力的证据)”以及第三段“Even so, scientists admit that it is extremely hard to finally confirm the existence of this distant planet. (即便如此,科学家承认,要最终证实这颗遥远行星的存在极其困难)”可知,科学家手里有证据,但又承认很难最终证实,态度谨慎客观。
35. 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Astronomers have found tentative but strong evidence of a planet passing in front of a star outside the Milky Way galaxy, pointing to a major new discovery in space exploration.

空前“It is a specific form of delay that is both unnecessary and voluntary.(它是一种既不必要又自愿的特定拖延形式。)” G选项“It isn’t caused by the person’s need to prioritize other tasks or by an unexpected emergency.(它并不是由人们优先处理其他任务的需求或者意外紧急事件造成的)”进一步区分拖延和客观不得已的耽搁,对概念做补充说明,和上文语义紧密衔接。
37. 根据空前的“Rather than the task itself, it’s often the emotions attached to an activity that cause people to pause.(往往不是任务本身,而是和活动相关的情绪使人选择搁置。)”以及空后的“When you’re faced with a broad question or topic to write about, the lack of clear instructions can produce a fear of not getting it right or of what might happen if you get it wrong.(当你面对宽泛的写作话题时,缺少明确指引会让人害怕做不好,或是担心出错后会产生什么后果。)” F选项“Handling the first lines of a college essay may bring up feelings of self‑doubt, for example.(例如,写大学论文的开头部分可能会让人产生自我怀疑的情绪)”用写作事例印证情绪带来拖延,承接上文观点,和后文例子形成呼应。
38. 根据空前的“Big projects may bring overpowered feelings which are likely to lead to procrastination.(大型项目会带来令人难以承受的情绪,容易引发拖延。)”以及空后的 “Answering an ordinary email from work, for example, may bring instant discomfort, so the urge to escape such negative emotion defeats one’s duty to complete the daily task.(例如回复一封普通工作邮件会立刻带来不适感,逃避负面情绪的冲动压倒完成日常工作的责任。)” A选项“However, the threat can also come from something tiny.(然而,这种心理威胁也可以来自微小的事物)”通过however完成语义转折,从重大任务过渡到微小事情,起到承上启下的作用。
39. 根据空前的“Research suggests that procrastination is linked to impatience on a genetic level. It may be a passed‑down property.(研究表明拖延在基因层面和急躁相关,它有可能是遗传特质。)”以及空后的“Environmental factors are just as important in shaping our response to tasks.(环境因素在塑造我们对待任务的反应方面同样重要。)” B选项“But that doesn’t mean you’re stuck and that’s who you are.(但这并不代表你只能受此束缚,本性就注定如此)”借助but形成转折,否定“遗传等于不可改变”,自然引出下文环境因素。
40. 根据空前的“Someone who doesn’t usually procrastinate can do so if they find themselves in a situation that exhausts their responding abilities, such as the death of a family member.(平时不拖延的人,如果处在耗尽自身应对能力的处境下也会拖延,比如亲人离世。)” E选项“Procrastination becomes an easy and ‘dirty’ way of reaction when your handling resources are maxed out.(当你的应对能力达到极限时,拖延就成了一种简单却消极的应对方式)”中handling resources are maxed out对应原文exhausts their responding abilities,对前文现象做概括解释,语义连贯。

M: All right, class. Before we get started, I want to make an announcement. The quiz I had planned for today will have to wait until next Tuesday. I didn’t have time to get it ready, so you have a few extra days to study.
Now, let’s get to today’s topic. Some of you may not like science, but you should at least respect it because it adds so much to our lives. Recently, I read about a newly created plastic that changes color when it’s stretched. How did the scientists dream up this idea? They could never have done it without observing nature. While studying certain insects, the scientists found that the insects’ shells changed color when looked at from different angles. They immediately thought of ways to use that science to benefit humans. The scientists plan to use this plastic on food packaging to tell us when our food goes bad and on our money to make it more difficult for criminals to copy. So when you’re walking to class each day, try to take some time to observe nature around you. You never know when you’ll have a bright idea that can change how we live.
