Llywelyn Williams, a four-time world champion adaptive surfer, says an accident that happened in his teenage years actually made his life better.
In 2011, he was hit by a car, which left him seriously injured. While in a coma(昏迷) in hospital, he dreamed of a surfboard saving him from a bright light. He felt it was not his time to die. When a friend visited him and asked what he wanted to do, Williams answered he wanted to continue surfing in Australia, for he had already loved surfing since he just learned walking.
The injury was so severe that his parents had to sign a paper to have his right leg amputated. His father said it was the hardest decision, yet the only way to save him. He also recalled crying alone after telling his son to be strong.
Williams’ recovery was all about getting back to the ocean. When he returned to the water, he felt born again. His friends carried him into the sea, which his mother referred to as a “beautiful moment”. Williams learned to do almost everything with one leg, except using a wheelbarrow.
At 18, he went to Australia with his family, surfing along the coast and living in a camper van. Now he returns each year for competitions. In March 2026, he won a championship in Australia and proudly held the Welsh flag. In May, he came third in another contest in Hawaii.
He pays for his trips himself and thanks his supporters. He also works with others to get adaptive surfing into the Paralympic Games. Williams says surfing has been a huge part of his recovery, and the adaptive surfing community has helped him greatly. He believes that even with disability, nothing is impossible.
24. What inspired Williams to surf after the accident?
A. His athletic talent. B. His friend’s encouragement.
C. His lifelong love for it. D. His memory of childhood.
25. What does the underlined word “amputated” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Displayed. B. Removed. C. Covered. D. Checked.
26. How might Williams feel when carried into water?
A. Energized. B. Regretful. C. Confused. D. Curious.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Williams?
A. Warm-hearted and gifted. B. Generous and honest.
C. Brave and strong-willed. D. Humorous and outgoing.

Are you feeling tired most of the time? Are you feeling alone, negative or helpless? Do you feel like life is getting on top of you and you seem unable to keep up with the demands of your to-do list at work or at home? These are all signs that you could be heading towards burnout.
Burnout is something that can happen to anyone, at any stage of life. Whether you’re a parent or caregiver trying to balance your responsibilities with everyday life, a healthcare worker under pressure, a student with numerous deadlines, or a retiree fresh out of the workplace going through a big life transition(转变), burnout treats everyone fairly. It’s often linked to stress in the workplace, but jobs aren’t the only source of long-term stress that can lead to burnout.
In the modern world, the pressure, which can slowly wear down our energy and cloud our judgment over time, is on when we want to do anything well. It’s all around us, within our own social circles, and also through social media, where we can easily take a look at what other people’s lives look like. Burnout is becoming more and more common globally as we’re in a storm of seeking the perfect state. We’ re pushing ourselves harder than ever to achieve perfection at work and at home, while also being made to feel like taking any rest is lazy or unproductive by outside influences.
But burnout is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s a normal and expected result of long-term suffering; it’s not a personal failure and it doesn’t mean you’re not able to recover. Actually, it just shows that your way of handling pressure needs reconsideration, and you ought to explore further to keep your mental state balanced in busy daily life.
28. What does “burnout” refer to?
A. A pile of negative personal habits. B. A state caused by extreme stress.
C. A feeling of sadness at work. D. A new fashion among young people.
29. What can be inferred about burnout from paragraph 2?
A. It hardly ever lasts long. B. It may have no link with career.
C. Retirement protects people against it. D. Life changes are the main cause of it.
30. What contributes to the global rise of burnout?
A. A strong desire to achieve perfection. B. Wider access to online education.
C. The absolute belief in individual talent. D. Lower expectations for the future.
31. What might the author continue to talk about?
A. Factors leading to burnout. B. Benefits of social communication.
C. Approaches to dealing with burnout. D. Misunderstandings about rest.

A common houseplant, the Chinese money plant, hides a beautiful geometric secret within its leaves: a special pattern called a Voronoi diagram. In this mathematical design, a surface is divided into areas, each area being closest to a certain point. This pattern appears naturally in the leaf vein(叶脉) structure. Researcher Elijah Blum and his workmates published their findings in Nature Communications, helping to explain how this lovely design comes about.
Blum first noticed the unusual vein arrangement while taking care of his sister’s plant during high school. At that time, he was a student helper at a research laboratory in New York. He shared what he found with his guide, a computer scientist. When they held the leaf up to the light, they immediately saw a pattern that is also seen on giraffe skin and dragonfly wings, but here it was specially arranged around the leaf’s water-releasing holes.
The research team used computer models to study how this pattern develops. Unlike the branching process commonly seen in other plants, their computer tests showed a different way. As the plant’s leaves grow, waves of a plant chemical spread outward from each hole. These waves meet one another, forming raised lines that finally become the leaf’s main veins. This process creates a true Voronoi pattern, with each hole acting as the center of its nearby area.
Why does this pattern help the plant? A team member suggests it may be a useful strategy. By placing the main water-carrying veins as far as possible from the water-releasing holes—where water quickly turns into vapor(蒸汽)— the plant reduces water loss while keeping good resource flow.
Plant biologist Lawren Sack, who was not involved in the study, praised the work as a “beautiful” example of nature’s efficiency. He noted that leaf veins “have so much to tell us” about improving the movement of resources. Past research on vein patterns has already inspired innovations in solar panel design, electronic circuits, and irrigation(灌溉) systems. “The more we know about leaf veins,” he said, “the more we can build functional and beautiful systems around us.”
32. What did Blum first discover about the Chinese money plant?
A. Its veins show a special pattern. B. It matters a lot in the ecosystem.
C. It grows faster than most other wild plants. D. Its leaves release water through small holes.
33. What can be known about the veins?
A. They follow the common branching pattern.
B. They keep moving toward water-releasing holes.
C. They develop before chemical waves spread out.
D. They come into shape where chemical waves meet.
34. How does the vein pattern benefit the Chinese money plant?
A. By enabling it to take in more sunlight.
B. By allowing it to grow in drier conditions.
C. By defending its leaves against strong winds.
D. By stopping water from escaping its leaves rapidly.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. New Inventions Inspired by Leaf Veins
B. A Hidden Pattern in a Houseplant’s Leaves
C. Ways to Take Care of Your Chinese Money Plant
D. The Importance of Water-Releasing Holes in Plants

Nearly every environmental factor is working against us on planes, making it near impossible to get to sleep. Inside an airplane, not only are we sitting upright, but light and noise are unpredictable and largely outside our control. 36 The air on planes is dry, which can contribute to dehydration(脱水), and long-distance flight schedules often don’t line up with our normal sleep window.
How to actually sleep on a plane? Unfortunately, there is no single miracle trick to ensure you get a few hours of sleep on a plane. But there are some practical strategies to improve your chance of getting some sleep on a plane.
37 You can’t control what others do when the cabin(机舱) lights dim, but you can take control of your personal environment. Pack an eye mask to create darkness, and earplugs or noise-canceling headphones to keep away the noise of engines or the endless chatter of the person around you.
Prepare before you board. 38 Before a long flight, avoid heavy meals and caffeine and stay hydrated. Some travelers may benefit from carefully timed melatonin(褪黑素) under medical guidance, or apps that gradually shift sleep schedules toward the destination time zone.
Create a familiar, calming routine. To work with your body clock, adopt home sleep habits in the air. Wear comfortable clothing and swap your screen for a book, podcast, or audiobook as “lights out” approaches. 39
Adjust your expectations. 40 Even with perfect preparation, be realistic. Control what you can, and accept that some variables— from chatty seatmates to turbulence— will always be out of your control.
A. Don’t seek perfection.
B. Find ways to deal with light and noise.
C. And you can get discouraged and anxious.
D. Good in-flight sleep starts on the ground.
E. Cabin conditions and timing add to the challenge.
F. It implies that this is a safe and proper place for bed.
G. Still, some people can get a great sleep on an airplane.

When our school announced a competition to design a “Community Memory Exhibit”, my heart raced. Ever since childhood, I had been fascinated by film—staying up late to edit raw videos, weaving stories out of light and shadow. This, I thought, was finally my chance. I pictured a short documentary, created entirely on my own, which would outshine any poster.
I had already mapped out interviews, detailed shot lists, even the closing narration. Yet before I could begin, our history teacher, Mr. Hughes, drew me aside. “Lena,” he said gently, “this year you’ll work with three others to create one piece of work.”
Hearing that, I felt my heart sank. The others? Mateo, a sculptor absorbed in abstract(抽象的) forms; Ivy, who communicated mostly through guitar; and Nora, a photographer who rarely lifted her eyes from her camera. None shared my love for film. My first response was to refuse, but Mr. Hughes only smiled: “Give it a try.”
Our first meeting was nothing short of disastrous. Mateo talked about “catching the essence of forgotten spaces”. Ivy played music that didn’t match anything, while Nora silently showed her photos. I presented my documentary plan, but it was met with near silence. Anger filled me, and I nearly gave up.
Still, something held me back. Perhaps it was the way Nora focused her camera on an abandoned train station, or the way Ivy’s music seemed to mirror the noise of old tracks. A thought struck me: were we, in our own separate languages, attempting to tell the same story? Then Mr. Hughes’ words returned to me: Give it a try. Perhaps this was not about proving myself alone, but about discovering what we could create together.
I stepped back from the door, took my seat, and looked at them. “We’re a team,” I said firmly. “We need to work together. What about finding a way to bring all our talents together?” For a moment, no one spoke, but then they each gave a quiet nod, an unspoken agreement passing among us. Then, we had a heated discussion.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, we decided on Nora’s train station project.
The exhibition day arrived as scheduled.

第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
Finally, we decided on Nora’s train station project. Mateo would create sculptural pieces to show the rough walls of the station. Meanwhile, Nora was in charge of shooting photos to catch its quiet beauty. To match the visual works, Ivy composed gentle music to set the mood. As for me, I would cut short video clips to tie all parts together. Though we argued now and then, we gradually learned to value each other’s strengths. We spent after-school hours adjusting details and smoothing disagreements. Before long, our exhibit took form, mixing sculpture, photos, music and videos into one complete story of community memory.
The exhibition day arrived as scheduled. We stood beside our work, nervous yet hopeful about the public’s feedback. As visitors wandered around, they slowed down, lost in the combination of images, sounds and artworks. Some even came up to us and shared their own warm memories of the old station with sincere smiles. Seeing this, Mr. Hughes smiled and told us our teamwork shone brightest. It suddenly dawned on me that great works are rarely created alone. When diverse talents are united, they can produce something far more amazing than any single creation.

W: Did you eat a lot of ice cream there?
M: Sure. We enjoyed unlimited servings of delicious ice cream. So will you take your kids there?
W: Well, how can I say no to such a place?
Text 10
W: Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome back to our school radio program. Today, let’s talk about a heartwarming trend: a new facility popping up in malls across China—the rise of “father and baby rooms”. Unlike traditional mother and baby rooms, these spaces focus on basic care, feeding, and rest. They are designed to encourage fathers to be more involved in taking care of the baby. This small change reflects a big transformation of Chinese family values. Fathers are no longer just supporters of their family; they are becoming full partners in raising children. One expert said this evolution shows that our society is moving toward a more balanced model of shared parenting. So next time you visit a mall, keep an eye out for these rooms. They’re not just a place to rest; they’re a sign that parenting is becoming a team effort, one that benefits both children and families.
