Situational Lead-in
Step 1: Lead-in
1. Greet the students.
2. Picture Talk: Show the DNA double helix model on the PPT. Ask students:
"What do you know about DNA? Talk with your partner."
3. Vocabulary Introduction: Introduce "DNA (=deoxyribonucleic acid)脱氧核糖核酸".
4. Let students share what they know about DNA in pairs, then invite a few to share with the class.
5. Purpose: To activate students' prior knowledge about DNA and introduce the topic of the lesson.

Step 2: Pre-reading.
1. Vocabulary Preview: Introduce the new words from the PPT (blueprint, complicated, living, strongly, twin, repeat, identify, relative, distant, gene, interact, edit, genetic).
2. Prediction: Ask students: "What do you think the passage will tell us about DNA?"
Step 3: While-reading
1. First Reading (Answer Questions): Ask students to read the passage quickly and answer:
A: "What is a blueprint?" (A blueprint is a drawing that shows how to build something.)
B: "Which is more complex, building a living thing or building a car?" (A person is a lot more complicated than a car.)
C: "Whose DNA is related to yours?" (Your parents, grandparents and more distant relatives.)
2. Second Reading (Detailed Understanding): Have students read again and complete the notes:
What is DNA? The blueprints to create a person, an animal, a plant or any other living being are called DNA.
What does DNA influence? Height, eye colour, foot size — all strongly influenced by DNA before you were born.
Is DNA unique? Except for some twins, each living thing has its own unique DNA. It repeats patterns from your parents'.
What can scientists do with DNA? Identify not only you, but also your relatives.
Where is DNA found? There are copies of your DNA in every part of your body — your finger has the same DNA as your hair.
How does DNA relate to health? Some health conditions can be caused by problems in your DNA. Scientists can look for these problems and help you before you become sick.
What about future technologies? They will allow scientists to better understand how genes interact with each other and how they will be edited to prevent genetic diseases.
3. Third Reading (True or False): Have students judge the statements:
"A person is less complicated than a car." (F — more complicated)
"Your DNA strongly influences your height and eye colour." (T)
"All living things have exactly the same DNA." (F — each has its own unique DNA, except some twins)
"Scientists can identify your relatives from your DNA." (T)
"Your finger has different DNA from your hair." (F — the same DNA)
"Future technologies will help prevent genetic diseases." (T)
4. Check Answers: Discuss the answers as a class.
Step 4: Language Points
1. Explanation: Use the PPT to explain the key language points with clear examples: complicated (adj.): 复杂的,难懂的 — complicate (v.), uncomplicated (adj.), complication (n.); The human body is far more complicated than a machine.
strongly (adv.): 强烈地;极大地 — strong (adj.), strength (n.), strengthen (v.); be strongly influenced by...; Many people strongly support this new policy.
repeat (v. & n.): 重复;复制 — repeated (adj.), repetition (n.); Please repeat your question slowly.
identify (v.): 识别;辨认;鉴定 — identification (n.), identical (adj.); You can identify the bird by its red tail.
relative (n. & adj.): 亲戚;相对的 — relate (v.), relation (n.), relationship (n.); I will visit some of my relatives during the holiday.
gene (n.): 基因 — genetic (adj.), genetics (n.); Scientists keep doing research on plant genes. / Some plants show special genetic features.
interact (v.): 相互作用;交流互动 — interaction (n.), interactive (adj.); interact with sb.; Kids should learn how to interact with their classmates.
edit (v.): 编辑;剪辑 — editor (n.), edition (n.); He will edit this article before publishing it.
2. Practice: Complete the word-form exercise on the PPT. Check answers together.
Step 5: Grammar Focus — Passive Voice in the Simple Future Tense
1. Discovery: Read the sentences in the grammar section and pay attention to the parts in yellow:
"... they will be edited to prevent genetic diseases."
"It will be widely studied and researched in the coming years as more discoveries are made."
2. Explanation: Explain the structure and usage of the passive voice in the simple future tense:
Structure: will be + v-ed (past participle)
Form 1: shall/will be done
• Affirmative: She will be greatly missed.
• Negative: shall/will + not + be + done — She will not be greatly missed.
• General question: Will she be greatly missed? — Yes, she will. / No, she won't.
• Special question: Why will she be greatly missed?
- Form 2: be going to be done
• Affirmative: Some old buildings are going to be put down.
• Negative: The problem isn't going to be discussed at the meeting tomorrow.
• General question: Are these trees going to be cut down?
• Special question: When are these trees going to be cut down?
Form 3: be to be done
• Affirmative: The sports meeting is to be held on April 10.
• Negative: The machines are not to be repaired tonight.
• General question: Are new textbooks to be published next week?
• Special question: When are new textbooks to be published?
- Note: done represents the past participle of a transitive verb.
3. Practice: Complete the fill-in-the-blank exercise on the PPT using the passive voice in the simple future tense. Check answers together.
Step 6: Post-reading, Summary & Homework.
1. Conversation Completion: Complete the conversation between Jenny and Li Ming:
Jenny: How much do you know about DNA? It's fantastic.
Li Ming: I've learned a bit in my science classes. What do you think is fantastic about it?
Jenny: D. My finger has the same DNA as my hair. There are copies of our DNA in every part of our body.
Li Ming: Exactly. B. It's amazing that something so small can hold so much important data.
Jenny: DNA testing is becoming more and more common these days. A. In the future, it will be used to diagnose and treat diseases.
Li Ming: Sounds great. It plays an important role in our health and technology.
Jenny: C. It's a complex topic. But I think it's really interesting to learn about the building blocks of life and how they shape who we are.
2. Summary: Review the key vocabulary, phrases, and grammar. Summarize the theme: DNA is not only the microscopic blueprint of life but also a code connecting the past and the future. Advances in technology are helping us uncover the mysteries of life and explore the infinite possibilities of gene editing, so that life science can better serve human health and the future.
3. Homework:
Copy the new words and useful phrases 3 times.
Finish the grammar exercises in your workbook.
思政渗透与学科育人有机融合点Subject based Character Education
This lesson introduces students to the fascinating world of DNA and genetics, fostering scientific literacy and curiosity about the building blocks of life. By learning about DNA's role in shaping who we are and its potential applications in medicine and technology, students develop an appreciation for the profound impact of science on daily life. The lesson encourages students to think critically about future technologies such as gene editing and their ethical implications. It also promotes respect for scientific research and the pursuit of knowledge. The theme insight — "DNA is not only the microscopic blueprint of life but also a code connecting the past and the future" — inspires students to explore the mysteries of life science and consider how they can contribute to human health and the future. This aligns with the goal of nurturing scientifically literate, curious, and responsible individuals.
