PRACTITIONERS
Jacqueline Felice de Almania (c.1322) highlights the doubts that women doctors faced. Born to a Jewish family in Florence, she moved to Paris where she worked as a physician and performed surgery. In 1322 she was tried for practicing unlawfully. In spite of the court hearing testimonials (证明) of her ability as a doctor, she was banned from medicine.
James Barry (c.1789 — 1865) was born Margaret Bulkley in Ireland, but dressed as a man, she was accepted by Edinburgh University to study medicine. She qualified as a surgeon in 1813, then joined the British Army, serving overseas. Barry retired in 1859, having practiced her entire medical profession living and working as a man.
Tan Yunxian (1461 — 1554) was a Chinese physician who learned her skills from her grandparents. Chinese women at the time could not serve apprenticeships (学徒期) with doctors. However, Tan passed the official exam. Tan treated women from all walks of life. In 1511, Tan wrote a book, Sayings of a Female Doctor, describing her life as a physician.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831 — 1895) worked as a nurse for eight years before studying in medical college in Boston in 1860. Four years later, she was the first African American woman to receive a medical degree. She moved to Virginia in 1865, where she provided medical care to freed slaves.

Long before Frank Chen was a graduate student at the Weitzman School of Design, his parents — both architects — shaped his great appreciation for built environments. Throughout his youth, they took him to see landmark structures, museums, and libraries. While these experiences were influential, Chen developed his own fascination for cities, maps, and urban spaces.
Growing up in Hangzhou, Chen saw how fast the historic city developed, as well as the challenges this caused — from population growth to limited public space. This inspired Chen who graduated from Tianjin University with an engineering degree focused on urban and rural planning, to pursue a career in improving cities for societal benefit.
At the University of Pennsylvania, Chen has led several projects that combine city planning with urban spatial analysis. One project may benefit citizens in Philadelphia and beyond. Using advanced computation tools, Chen developed a visual model that maps the best places to plant street trees in Philadelphia for ideal shade and pedestrian (行人的) benefit. One goal is to help address the challenge of heatwaves, a problem in cities worldwide.
Chen's project involves seeking a balance between tree shade and tree location, all with pedestrian well-being in mind. For example, pedestrians are active in Center City Philadelphia, but tall buildings already provide shade, thereby reducing the need for street trees. Compare that with suburban (郊区的) areas with shorter facilities, where planting trees may create more shade overall, but fewer pedestrians are around to feel the benefits. "I think the city can use this project as a reference about where the trees are most needed," Chen says.
Xiaojiang Li, assistant professor of urban spatial analytics, helped Chen code (编码) for the visual mapping part of the project using Graphics Processing Unit computation methods. “He encouraged me to consider project limitations with an eye for what’s practical for cities. In the data collection process, I accounted for real-world limits, so the results are practical,” says Chen. “Projects that can be applied in real-life situations are the most satisfying thing.”
24. What drove Frank Chen to pursue a career in improving cities?
A. The development and challenges of his hometown.
B. His love of studying paper maps of different cities.
C. The need to combine modernity with history in cities.
D. His achievement of getting a degree in related fields.
25. What can be inferred about Frank Chen’s visual model?
A. It is based on traditional urban planning methods.
B. It takes into account environmental and human needs.
C. It was designed to monitor real-time pedestrian flow.
D. It has been widely applied by cities across the globe.
26. How does Frank Chen wish his project to be used?
A. To encourage citizen science.
B. To benefit high-rise builders.
C. To find the best tree-planting spots.
D. To inspire other city-planning projects.
27. What did Xiaojiang Li emphasize?
A. Collecting real-world data.
B. Using advanced tools in coding.
C. Focusing on practicality in work.
D. Considering the limitations of the results.

Digital dementia (痴呆) has become a common cognitive hypothesis (认知假说) in the 21st century — it has weakened our ability to remember phone numbers because we store them all in contact lists, filled our waking hours with passive screen time like mindlessly watching TV, and shifted our attention with endless information streams.
But does technology truly harm the aging brain? A comprehensive new study by researchers from the United States provides an unexpected answer. Published in Nature Human Behaviour, the study combined data from 57 previous studies, which included more than 411,000 adults aged over 50. Surprisingly, the research overall revealed that higher use of computers, smartphones, and the internet might actually be associated with lower rates of cognitive decline, with a 58 percent risk reduction.
Interestingly, the effect of technology use on brain function found in this study was similar to or stronger than other known protective factors, such as physical activity, or maintaining a healthy blood pressure. This benefit remained significant even when factors like socioeconomic status and overall health were taken into account.
Why does technology use benefit older adults? Researchers suggest it comes down to how we use it. Activities, like reading or learning a new language, are known to protect our brains as we age. Similarly, greater engagement with technology may serve as a form of mental exercise. Adapting to software updates or learning to use a new smartphone keeps the brain active. Additionally, technology helps older people stay socially connected and independent for longer.
“The impact of AI on the aging brain will only become evident in future decades. However, our ability to adapt to historical technological innovations, and the potential for this to support cognitive function, suggest the future may not be all bad. For example, advances in brain-computer connections offer new hope for people with neurological (神经系统的) disease or disability. We need to carefully study how these technologies affect cognitive health over time,” says Nikki-Anne Wilson.
28. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By quoting an expert. B. By defining a concept.
C. By providing statistics. D. By giving examples.
29. What can be inferred about the protective effect of technology use?
A. It may outperform healthy management.
B. It can reduce the need for exercise.
C. It maintains the blood pressure.
D. It varies with socioeconomic status.
30. What determines the benefits of technology use on older adults?
A. The number of online friends. B. The mental and social stimulation.
C. The frequency of software updates. D. The independent and active reading.
31. What are Nikki-Anne Wilson’s words about?
A. Advances in technological innovations.
B. Possible direction for further study.
C. More care to the neurologically disabled.
D. Potential application of the findings.
D
On Oct.6, three scientists were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. They discovered how the body stops its own immune system from turning against itself, a process vital for preventing autoimmune (自身免疫性) diseases.
The immune system performs a remarkable balancing act. On a daily basis, it must accurately identify and destroy a great many foreign invaders like viruses and bacteria, many of which have gradually developed into what look like our own cells. The critical question was: what system ensures this defense force does not harm the body it is meant to protect?
For a long time, the thymus (胸腺), a small organ in the chest, was considered the central area for establishing “immune tolerance.” It was thought to remove attacking cells during early development. However, this theory could not fully explain the body’s continuous self-control.
The revolutionary change began with the work of Japanese scientist Shimon Sakaguchi. Through a series of innovative experiments on newborn mice in the 1980s and 1990s, he made an unexpected discovery that removing the thymus led to autoimmune disorders, suggesting that the organ was not just removing harmful cells but was also the source of specialized protective cells. After a decade of strict investigation, Sakaguchi definitively identified a new class of cells in 1995, which he named “T-reggs”.
In the beginning, the scientific community met this discovery with a lot of doubt, since the existence of these “peacekeeper” cells was a completely new idea. The crucial confirmation came from the work of American scientists Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell. Their research in the late 1990s and early 2000s detailed the systems: T-reggs either produce calming proteins or deliver direct signals to take control of other attacking immune cells. Furthermore, they identified a specific protein called FoxP3, which acts as a key switch for T-reg function, providing a clear marker for their study.
The discoveries of these three scientists have proved that immunity is not only an attacking force but is under constant, active control. This essential knowledge has opened up new roads for treating autoimmune conditions, improving organ transplant capacity(能力), and even developing more effective cancer treatments, showing the significant impact of understanding the body’s internal safeguards.
32. What does “immune tolerance” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The process of avoiding self-attack.
B. The function in producing immune cells.
C. The ability to destroy viruses and bacteria.
D. The tendency of losing continuous self-control.
33. What can be inferred from Sakaguchi’s experiment?
A. The result was immediately accepted.
B. The thymus failed to remove harmful cells.
C. T-reggs were confirmed to produce calming proteins.
D. The thymus had a previously unknown protective function.
34. What is mainly mentioned about the discovery in the last paragraph?
A. Its remaining challenges.
B. Its impact on our body.
C. Its wide applications in medicine.
D. Its success in curing illnesses.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. T-reggs: Body’s Peacekeepers.
B. Thymus: Centre of Creating Cells.
C. Side Effects of the Immune System.
D. Fight Against Autoimmune Diseases.

Dear teachers and classmates,
The great person who inspires me most is Yuan Longping, known as the father of hybrid rice. He is not only a great scientist but a true hero in the fight against hunger.
He devoted his whole life to this great cause. What impresses me deeply is his hard work in the fields day after day, never stopping even in his old age. His greatest dream was simply to fill everyone's bowl with rice.
His story tells me that true greatness lies in serving others wholeheartedly. That is why he inspires me so much. Determined to be a person like him, I will study harder and make a difference to the world one day.
Thank you for your attention.
Dear teachers and classmates,
Today I'd like to share my opinion on whether we should fight artificial intelligence. On the one hand, AI has been integrated into our daily life, which provides us with instant and convenient services and frees people from dangerous work.
On the other hand, some people worry that it may take over our occupations and leave more people unemployed. What's worse, over-reliance on machines may gradually weaken our ability to think independently.
In my opinion,it is unwise to fight AI at all.Rather than opposing AI, we should advocate using it wisely, because what matters most is how we make it serve us. If used properly, AI will surely bring us a brighter future.
Thank you for your attention.

通过文章第一部分中的“Born to a Jewish family in Florence, she moved to Paris where she worked as a physician and performed surgery. (她出生于佛罗伦萨的一个犹太家庭,搬到巴黎当医生并做外科手术)”以及第二部分中的“She qualified as a surgeon in 1813 (她获得了做外科医生的资格)”和“Barry retired in 1859, having practiced her entire medical profession living and working as a man. (Barry于1859年退休,她以男人的身份生活和工作,从事了整个医学职业)”可知,Jacqueline和James的共同点是都有资格进行外科手术。故选C。
【22题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,再根据文章第三部分中的“Tan wrote a book, Sayings of a Female Doctor, describing her life as a physician. (Tan写了一本书《女医生的故事》,描述了她作为一名医生的生活)”可推知,Tan与其他从业人员的不同之处在于她写了一本书。故选A。
通过文章第一部分中的“Four years later, she was the first African American woman to receive a medical degree. (四年后,她成为第一位获得医学学位的非裔美国女性)”可知,Rebecca Lee Crumpler是第一位获得医学学位的非裔美国人。故选D。
24. A 根据第二段,"Growing up in Hangzhou, Chen saw how fast the historic city developed, as well as the challenges this caused — from population growth to limited public space. This inspired Chen... to pursue a career in improving cities for societal benefit."
25. B 第三段提到该模型 "maps the best places to plant street trees... for ideal shade and pedestrian benefit",第四段又说"seeking a balance between tree shade and tree location, all with pedestrian well-being in mind"。
I think the city can use this project as a reference about where the trees are most needed."
He encouraged me to consider project limitations with an eye for what's practical for cities... so the results are practical."
根据第一段中“Digital dementia (痴呆) has become a common cognitive hypothesis (认知假说) in the 21st century — it has weakened our ability to remember phone numbers because we store them all in contact lists, filled our waking hours with passive screen time like mindlessly watching TV, and shifted our attention with endless information streams.(数字痴呆已成为21世纪常见的认知假说——它削弱了我们记忆电话号码的能力,因为我们将其存储在通讯录中;它用无意识地看电视等被动屏幕时间填充了我们的清醒时光;它用无尽的信息流转移了我们的注意力)”可知,作者通过定义新概念引出话题。
根据第三段中“Interestingly, the effect of technology use on brain function found in this study was similar to or stronger than other known protective factors, such as physical activity, or maintaining a healthy blood pressure.(有趣的是,这项研究发现的技术使用对大脑功能的影响,类似于或强于其他已知的保护因素,例如体育锻炼或维持健康血压)”可推知,技术使用的保护作用在效果上可能优于健康管理(如保持血压健康)。
根据第四段中“Similarly, greater engagement with technology may serve as a form of mental exercise. Adapting to software updates or learning to use a new smartphone keeps the brain active. Additionally, technology helps older people stay socially connected and independent for longer.(同样,更多地使用科技产品可以作为一种精神锻炼。适应软件更新或学习使用新智能手机可以让大脑保持活跃。此外,技术帮助老年人保持更长时间的社交联系和独立性)”可知,技术使用对老年人的益处取决于其带来的脑力刺激和社会联系,即精神和社会层面的刺激。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的““The impact of AI on the aging brain will only become evident in future decades. However, our ability to adapt to historical technological innovations, and the potential for this to support cognitive function, suggest the future may not be all bad. For example, advances in brain-computer connections offer new hope for people with neurological (神经系统的) disease or disability. We need to carefully study how these technologies affect cognitive health over time,” says Nikki-Anne Wilson.(Nikki-Anne Wilson表示:“人工智能对老龄化大脑的影响,未来几十年才会显现。
根据第三段“For a long time, the thymus (胸腺), a small organ in the chest, was considered the central area for establishing “immune tolerance”. It was thought to remove attacking cells during early development. However, this theory could not fully explain the body’s continuous self-control.( 长期以来,胸腺(位于胸腔内的一个小器官)被视为建立“免疫耐受”的核心部位。人们认为它会在机体早期发育阶段清除具有攻击性的细胞。但这一理论无法充分解释人体持续的自我调控机制。)”可知,免疫耐受指的是身体避免免疫系统攻击自身细胞的过程,即避免自我攻击的过程。故选A。
根据第四段“Through a series of innovative experiments on newborn mice in the 1980s and 1990s, he made an unexpected discovery that removing the thymus led to autoimmune disorders, suggesting that the organ was not just removing harmful cells but was also the source of specialized protective cells.(通过对20世纪80年代和90年代新生小鼠进行的一系列创新实验,他意外地发现,切除胸腺会导致自身免疫性疾病,这表明该器官不仅清除有害细胞,还是专门保护细胞的来源。)”
根据最后一段“The discoveries of these three scientists have proved that immunity is not merely an attacking force but is under constant, active control. This essential knowledge has opened up new roads for treating autoimmune conditions, improving organ transplant capacity, and even developing more effective cancer treatments, showcasing the significant impact of understanding the body’s internal safeguards.(这三位科学家的发现证明,免疫不仅仅是一种攻击力量,而是受到持续、主动的控制。
故选A。
