Born in 1895 in Yixing, Jiangsu, Xu Beihong showed a strong interest in arts since childhood. He began studying the Chinese Classics from his father when he was six. Xu spent much time helping out on his family’s farm. In 1912, his father fell ill. Xu became the breadwinner of the family and began teaching arts in all kinds of schools. In 1917, he began to teach at Peking University at the invitation of Cai Yuanpei.
Beginning in 1919, Xu studied oil painting and drawing in Paris. His travels around Europe allowed him to explore Western art techniques. He studied the bone structure (骨架) and movement of horses. Such knowledge is clear in his works. But his excellent ink brushwork truly brought his horses to life. Through his art, Xu gave the world a new way of understanding horses, celebrating their beauty, strength and spirit.
In 1923, Xu’s oil painting was shown at the French National Art Exhibition (展览) . Later, he received invitations from many European cities to hold exhibitions internationally.
After returning home in 1927, Xu took an active part in art education. He focused on developing creativity with students. He also encouraged his students to learn from foreign artworks. “There is no other way to learn art, but to keep practising,” Xu once said.
In 1933, Xu organized an exhibition of modern Chinese painting in Paris. It drew in lots of attention and was then moved to Belgium, Milan, Moscow, and other places. Between 1939 and 1941, Xu travelled to Southeast Asia, holding exhibitions in Singapore and India. All the money from these exhibitions went to Chinese people who were suffering because of the war.

Have you ever seen “vertical farms” (垂直农场)? They are a new way of growing food in cities. Unlike traditional farms that need a lot of land, vertical farms grow crops (庄稼) in tall buildings. This idea is becoming more and more popular in China as cities grow bigger and land becomes less available.
One of the largest vertical farms in China is in a city in Jiangsu. Scientists there grow vegetables in a building with many floors. Each floor has rows of plants that grow under special LED lights. The temperature and humidity are carefully controlled to make sure the plants grow well. This method uses much less water than traditional farming because water is recycled in the system.
In the past, people had to travel far to buy fresh vegetables. Now, vertical farms in cities can provide fresh vegetables to local supermarkets. The food does not need to travel long distances, so it stays fresher and is better for the environment.
Vertical farming has many advantages. It can produce food all year round, no matter what the weather is like outside. It also uses less land and water, which makes it a good choice for cities. Moreover, it creates jobs for local people. As more cities face the problem of feeding a growing population, vertical farming might be a helpful solution.
However, vertical farming also has some challenges. The cost of building and running a vertical farm is high. The special lights and climate control systems use a lot of electricity. Scientists are working hard to find ways to make vertical farming more affordable. They hope that one day, every city will be able to grow its own food this way.
8. Where do vertical farms grow crops?
A. On the ground in the countryside.
B. In tall buildings in cities.
C. Under the sea.
9. How does vertical farming use water?
A. It wastes a lot of water.
B. It uses more water than traditional farming.
C. It recycles water in the system.
10. How does the writer support the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. By comparing with the past. B. By asking questions. C. By listing numbers.
11. In which part of a newspaper can you probably read this text?
A. Sports. B. Travel. C. Science.

Huang Xuhua, a great Chinese scientist, was born in Guangdong Province in1926. When he was young, he saw the hard times of China under foreign attacks. He decided to make the country strong with his knowledge.
In the 1950s, China started to develop nuclear submarines (核潜艇). It was a tough job. But Huang and his team took on this challenge. To keep the project secret, they stopped contacting the outside world, even their families.
During the design process, they met a lot of problems. For example, designing a nuclear reactor (核反应堆) was really hard. They couldn’t get help from foreign experts, so they only used simple tools like abacuses (算盘) and slide rules (计算尺) to calculate (计算) and do experiments. After many tries, they finally solved these problems.
In the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. China became one of the few countries that had this ability. However, Huang kept helping to develop submarine technology. His hard work and devotion (奉献) won him many honours, including the “Medal of the Republic” in 2019.
