My grandma is 72 years old. Like many old people, she used to be afraid of smartphones. She thought they were too difficult and preferred cash. But everything changed when she moved to the city to live with us last year.
At first, she felt lonely because she knew few neighbors. One day, I taught her how to use a shopping app. To her surprise, she could buy fresh vegetables without going out on rainy days. Later, she learned mobile payment. Now she pays by scanning a QR code in shops, just like young people.
Grandma also joined a video chat group with her old friends from the village. They share photos of their grandchildren and talk every evening. “I feel much closer to them now,” she said.
The biggest change is her confidence. Last month, she even taught another elderly neighbor how to order a taxi online. “Age is just a number,” she laughed. Technology has not only brought convenience to her life, but also helped her stay connected with the world.
3. What did Grandma use to think of smartphones?
A. They were useful and cheap.
B. They were too difficult for her.
C. They were beautiful gifts.
4. How does Grandma pay in shops now?

5. The underlined word “confidence” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.

When was the last time that you dialed (拨) a phone number from memory (凭记忆)? It probably depends on how long you’ve used technology like a cellphone. It seems that teenagers have never had to remember any telephone numbers. Smartphones offer quick and easy ways for keeping information. There is no need to memorize anything. But this isn’t without bad results.
As smartphones develop more and more, users’ heavily depending on them may cause terrible results. “Digital dementia” is the words used by experts to describe some of these results. Some doctors like Jim, an expert in memory improvement, are taking a closer look at this result. Jim describes digital dementia like this, “…we’re offering our brains to our smart devices.” He continues, “We’re depending on our smartphones so heavily that our smartphones are making us stupid.” As medical studies show the drop in memory and learning skills among smartphone users, a connection is made between symptoms (症状) which are connected with dementia.
The seriousness of overuse becomes clear when you consider just how young smartphone users are becoming. Writer and speaker Simon points out that smartphone screens and sounds lead to addiction (成瘾). Young kids cannot deal with the problems. So now parents and teachers should try to deal with the young people with this kind of addiction.
In fact, smartphones aren’t all bad. They’re really easy to use, and the connectivity (连接性) they create cannot be thought wrong. The key is finding out how to make a balance (平衡) between usage and uselessness. We should control our cellphone use, making sure when and where we can use cellphones.
7. What do the underlined words “digital dementia” mean in Paragraph 2 ?
A. 数字迷恋 B. 数字痴呆 C. 数字智慧
8. What may happen if we heavily depend on smartphones according to medical studies?
A. Memory will drop.
B. Learning skills will improve.
C. Kids will be cleverer.
9. We can learn from Paragraph 3 that .
A. we should stop young kids from using smartphones.
B. we should help kids deal with the smartphone addiction.
C. it’s very dangerous for young kids to use smartphones.
10. How does the writer end this passage?
A. By saying that smartphones aren’t all bad.
B. By saying that smartphones are very helpful.
C. By advising controlling our cellphone use.
【答案】7. B 8. A 9. B 10. C

In August, southern China experienced very high temperatures.
This had a bad influence on the crops in Zhou’s field. However, Zhou never gave up. He thought it opened a window for him to do further study. He said, “Sometimes we just need to find ways to overcome high temperatures, and this also helps us choose the rice.”

Zhou Lei is a researcher at the Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences (湖北省农业科学院). He won the China Youth May Fourth Medal. He has made great progress in the improvement of rice over the years. So far he has bred (培育) 16 new kinds of rice. This makes sure China has enough grain to feed its people.
Zhou often has chances to go abroad and exchange experience with others. He visited the United States and realized that even though China was playing a leading role in rice research in the world, its agricultural industry was still behind some countries.
After returning to China, Zhou decided to use his skills to help China in agriculture. Instead of staying in a comfortable office, Zhou always worked in the field. Sometimes, he even took care of his crops 24 hours a day.
The hard work finally paid off. After going through tens of thousands of tries, Zhou and his team succeeded in creating new kinds of rice to meet the needs of people.
