Since I first came to China in 2010, both my life and this country have changed greatly. That year, a friend and I took a five-week trip, visiting Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Hefei, and Hong Kong. We enjoyed meeting locals, seeing beautiful places, and tasting delicious food.
In 2014, I returned to Beijing as an exchange student in China. On the flight (航班), a Chinese lady asked me, “Do you have WeChat?” I replied, “What’s WeChat?” Her surprised look said it all. That year, I watched WeChat Pay become popular—everyone started using it. As my Chinese improved, I tried waimai (food delivery). It helped me order my favorite meals easily on cold winter nights or rainy days.
When I came back for my master’s degree two years later, bike-sharing appeared in Beijing. I rode them everywhere; they were so convenient that I thought I couldn’t live without them.
Nowadays, China still keeps its old customs but it’s also full of new ideas. Recently, smart delivery lockers and self-driving taxis have made life more convenient. Some things stay the same, but many change fast. I’m sure more new things will appear as China develops, and I’m excited to see them.

A new study found that helping the environment—picking up trash, using less plastic, or walking instead of driving—can make people just as happy as doing fun activities like hobbies.
In his research, Michael Prinzing from Baylor University in Texas looked at how eco-friendly activities affect happiness. “Many people think it’s hard to live in an eco-friendly way because it means giving up comfort or convenience,” Prinzing said. “But helping others and being eco-friendly can actually make life more fun.”
His study was made up of two smaller studies. In the first study, 181 adults from 14 countries were asked about their daily activities and how they felt each day for 10 days. The study found people felt happier on days when they did something good for the planet. The effect was even stronger for those who already lived in an eco-friendly way, but it still worked for those who didn’t.
Prinzing’s second study looked at 545 college students in the US. They were put into three groups—one group did eco-friendly activities, another did fun activities, and the third just had a normal day. After two days, people in both the eco-friendly group and the fun activity group felt much happier than those in the third group.
These studies suggest that helping the planet helps people feel good. Each study only took place over a few days, so more research is needed to see if the effects last longer. But either way, doing something good for the planet could make your day that much better!
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
11. How does the writer lead into the topic?
A. By asking questions. B. By giving the facts.

B. Only eco-friendly people felt happier.
C. People felt happier on days when they helped the planet.
D. They worked better than fun activities.
13. What does the underlined word “those” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. People who did something good for the planet. B. People who were from 14 countries.
C. People who just had a normal day. D. People who did fun activities.
14. According to the text, what are the researchers most likely to do next?
A. Compare happiness in different countries. B. Test eco-friendly activities on animals.
C. Test with older age groups. D. Test how long the effects of eco-friendly activities last.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. How to Save the Planet B. Eco-friendly Actions can Make People Happy

Waste sorting and recycling
Have you ever imagined that a waste-burning factory does not have enough waste to burn? It sounds strange, but in some cities, this is becoming a new reality. ____16____
The main reason is the great success of waste sorting and recycling in China. People sort waste into different kinds for recycling, which cuts down the waste for burning. ____17____ For example, dry waste in Shanghai has dropped by 15% since 2019, and Beijing’s total waste collection has fallen by about 10%.
These waste-to-energy factories still play an important part in dealing with non-recyclable waste. The waste is burned at over 850°C, and then gives out a large amount of heat. This heat boils water to produce high-pressure steam. The steam can drive generators (发电机). ____18____
However, these factories are not perfect in environmental protection. Burning waste still produces some harmful gases like CO₂, which is not good for the environment. ____19____ But in fact, they may forget the more important goals—to reduce and reuse first.
____20____ Reducing what we buy and reusing daily things are the most effective ways. The future of waste management is not just about burning. It is about a “zero waste” way where nothing is wasted.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺、内容完整。
A. The best waste is the waste we never make.

13. What does the underlined word “those” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

B. Some people might think burning waste is enough.
C. This produces electricity while reducing the amount of waste.
D. Let’s explore this surprising change and the science behind it.
E. Many big cities have already got great results from this green action.
