SCIENCE NEEDS YOU!
Citizen science is a new movement which involves members of the public, either singly or in
groups,working towards a common goal.Very often,citizen scientists collect,report or analyse
data.
What makes a citizen scientist?
Anyone who contributes their time, effort and whatever resources they have to a scientific
research project is a citizen scientist. They come from all walks of life-housewives,retirees,
students, sports people, children. There's no need for a formal or strong scientific background, just
enthusiasm.
How to get involved?
If you have a particular hobby, interest or expertise there's almost certainly a project you can
join.Search online for citizen science projects and pick out the ones you like.It could be observing
insects, migratory birds, even plate movements;all you have to do is to record and hand in
observations. You can use your laptop or even your smartphone to do this-easy!
Here is an opportunity from NASA:
Space Cloud Watch
What you'll do
◆Watch the sky at sunrise and sunset for noctilucent clouds(夜光云)and shoot
them.
Upload your photos and observations to a website to contribute to research on
Earth's middle atmosphere.
Take notes when noctilucent clouds are absent,so you can report that too!
Requirements
◆Time:10-20 minutes

Will it ever be"real"science?
Citizen science is how real science started! Most of our early scientific discoveries were made
by enthusiasts.Data collected by volunteers holds comparable scientific value to that collected by
"real"scientists and as big data becomes more widespread, the tools to process it are becoming
more user-friendly.So yes, citizen science is as real as it can be!

Steve Bagmanyan found his calling in a workshop filled with broken instruments. But every
year, the shop brings both joy and heartbreak.Due to budget cuts, the number of technicians has
dropped from 60 to just 11,leaving them to repair instruments for more than half a million students
in Los Angeles public schools.
"The work we do is important and needs to be preserved, but it's becoming a dying craft,"said
Bagmanyan,60,who runs the shop and handles piano repairs."Children are our future, yet music
programs are being cut across the country."
第2页共11页
However, there is hope for the shop. The Last Repair Shop,a short documentary featuring
Bagmanyan and three other technicians, recently won an Oscar for best documentary short film.
The film combines their personal stories with reflections from students who have found comfort and
joy in music.
Few people even knew the shop existed before the documentary's release. This workshop,in
operation since 1959,is believed to be the last ofits kind in the country.Bagmanyan and his team
provide free instruments and repairs across the school district, often serving children from low-
income families. For many of these children, public schools are their only source of musical
instruments, which wealthier families can more easily afford.
Since the release of the film, public support has soared.Donations have been made to fund
more repairs and strengthen school music programs in Los Angeles."People are inspired by what
we do and want to support a dying art form,"said Ben Proudfoot, who co-directed the documentary.
Bagmanyan knows that a poorly maintained instrument can discourage a child from learning.
"If an instrument doesn't work properly,a child might give up on music,"he said."But when you
know the instrument is going to a student who loves it,it's impossible not to smile."
After 21 years of service,Bagmanyan says his cup is full, knowing that children may carry a
love of music with them for a lifetime."I was planning to retire,"he admitted."But now I'll rebuild
the shop to what it once was and keep going a little longer."
4.What is the challenge faced by Bagmanyan?
A.Old instruments.
B.Shortage of skilled technicians.
C.Low profitability.
D.Declining number of students.
5.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The career achievements of Bagmanyan
B.The popularity of the documentary.
C.The unique history of the school district.
D.The importance of the repair shop.
6.How does the documentary impact the shop?
A.It enhances the shop's public image
B.It attracts new business opportunities.
C.It helps sustain the shop's operation
D.It provides education to the community.
7.What do the underlined words"his cup is full"in the last paragraph mean?
A.He feels deeply satisfied.
B.He is ready to retire.
C.He is tired of the spotlight.
D.He has become very wealthy.

Artificial intelligence is transforming many industries, but one area where its benefits are
especially clear is public health. For an industry that demands high accuracy and efficiency,AI
could greatly improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
The greatest return from AI may come from detecting life-threatening illnesses earlier and more
accurately. In June,Microsoft announced a medical tool that was four times more successful than
doctors at identifying complex diseases. Some AI models can even predict health risks years in
advance.Scientists recently reported that an AI system could predict the risk of over 1,000 diseases
decades into the future.
Less noticeable but equally important is AI's ability to reduce office work.In the US,
paperwork costs account for about 30%of extra healthcare spending compared to other countries.
Speech-processing technologies can record conversations with patients, create medical notes, and
draft letters.A recent study found that using such technologies reduced documentation time for
doctors by more than 50%.
Clearly, promoting AI adoption should be a priority for governments worldwide.Aging
populations and rising healthcare costs are putting pressure on public budgets. The World Health
Organization predicts a shortage of about 11 million healthcare workers by 2030,especially in
lower-income countries. As the Covid-19 pandemic showed,a healthier global population benefits
everyone.
However,AI use in healthcare is still new and uneven. The technology is still developing, and
strict testing is needed before widespread use.Health professionals need training.Data privacy
concerns and outdated IT systems add to the challenges.Managers may hesitate to introduce AI
where staff fear job loss.
A joint effort from governments, health regulators, and tech companies is needed to fund, test,
and deploy AI in hospitals. This will not be easy, but the reward-healthier populations and more
sustainable healthcare systems-is worth the effort.
8.What is the main benefit of AI in healthcare according to paragraph 2?
A.It reduces the cost of medical treatment.
B.It replaces doctors in complex surgeries.
C.It speeds up the development of new drugs.
D.It enables early and precise disease detection.
9.How does AI help reduce office work in healthcare?
A.By doing paperwork in place of doctors.B.By replacing human workers with robots.
C.By removing the need for health checks.D.By training doctors to use new technologies.
10.What can be inferred about the current state of AI in healthcare?
A.It has been widely applied in hospitals.B.It has already solved data privacy concerns.
C.It hasn't been put into wide use nowadays.D.It is only used in private healthcare systems.
11.What is the author's attitude towards the future of AI in healthcare?
A.Indifferent.
B.Supportive.
C.Cautious
D.Unclear.

Each year, over 1.2 billion new smartphones are produced worldwide. This not only consumes
significant energy and natural resources but also results in large amounts of electronic waste,as
users often replace functional devices every few years. To address this issue, researchers have
developed a new approach-transforming old phones into small-scale data centers for practical
applications.
"Innovation often begins not with something new,but with a new way of thinking about the
old,"said Huber,an associate professor. The research team demonstrated that outdated smartphones
can be transformed into tiny data centers capable of processing and storing data for real-world
applications. They also found that building such a data center only costs around 8 euros per device,
making it an economical solution.
In their experiment, the scientists carefully removed the batteries to prevent chemical leakage
and connected four old phones using 3D-printed cases. The system was powered externally and
tested in practical environments. One successful trial of the new approach involved underwater sea
life monitoring, where the device automatically recorded and analyzed sea species.Tasks that once
required divers can now be handled directly by the device underwater.
These reused devices show promise in other areas as well. For example, they could be applied
at bus stops to monitor passenger flow patterns and help urban planners adjust public transportation
schedules and routes. This approach not only reduces e-waste but also supports sustainable digital
solutions for modern communities.
"This smart, green approach rethinks our throwaway tech culture.Sustainability is not just
about preserving the future but also about reimagining the present, turning yesterday's devices into
tomorrow's solutions,"added Ulrich,an Associate Professor of Software Engineering.With
minimal investment and creative thinking, outdated technology can serve new purposes,
contributing to a greener digital society while effectively addressing the growing problem of
electronic waste
12.Which of the following best describes the new approach in paragraph 2?
A.Time-saving.B.User-fiiendly
C.Cost-effective
D.Labor-intensive.
13.What was a successful application of the new approach?
A.Assisting divers in recording sea animals.B.Monitoring underwater life independently.
C.Producing 3D-printed cases for ocean use.D.Supplying power to underwater equipment
14.What can we infer about the reused devices from paragraph 4?
A.They predict the city traffic patterns.
B.They help with smart city management.
C.They inform passengers of bus arrivals.
D.They assess the work of urban planners.
15.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Global Smartphone Waste Problem
B.An Eco-Digital Guide:Electronic Engineering
C.A Green Solution:Repurposing Old Phones
D.The Sustainability of Smart City Development

Secrets for shopping healthier at the supermarket
Shopping at the supermarket for groceries can be an adventure tour, for food producers don't
always have your best interests in mind.16.
Look for a short ingredient list. When you find a packaged food with a long list of ingredients
on the label, don't put it straight into your shopping bag.17 The truth is,many of those
ingredients are various kinds of sugars and chemicals.Check the list of ingredients every time,
because a shorter ingredient list equals fewer added sugars and preservatives ()
_18The organic label is earned through an officially approved process. All organic
farms must keep records and be inspected by officially recognized inspectors. Many supermarkets
now cany some organic food, and farmers'markets, health food stores, and individual farms are
good sources of organic food.
Be cautious of"natural"labels. You may feel like the food labels "natural"and "organic"can
be exchanged.19.Although there's no single set of requirements for products claiming to
be natural, such labels are still supposed to be accurate.Farmers or food companies that use the
"natural"label are not forced to be inspected as a condition of using the label.
Don't get trapped by watery foods.20.And if it's first on the list of ingredients,it's
clear that there's a long list of additives (to follow. You might not be surprised to see water
at the top of the list of ingredients in soups. After all, soup does take a lot of water.
A.That's exactly what food companies want you to think.
B.Water is the magic ingredient in prepared foods.
C.Water is cheap,so the food industry prefers it.
D.Instead, look for a simpler kind of the food.
E.Purchase the food with "organic"labels
F.Learn what“organic”really means.
G.Arm yourself with the following tips the next time you head to the supermarket.
