December 5 is International Volunteer Day. It reminds us how powerful it is to help others.
Volunteering is when you give up your time for free to help someone else. You might help a charity, take care of the environment, or support a team like teaching younger children how to play sports.
Volunteering helps both the people you help and yourself. It can help you understand how others feel. “Volunteering is good for your mind. It makes you feel happy almost like your heart is smiling” says Maddy Mills from the Family Volunteering Club. This group helps children and their families take part in helpful activities in their communities. Volunteering can also be good for your body. “If you walk to pick up litter or plant trees in a park, you're also getting some exercise,” says Maddy. You can meet new people, make friends, and learn useful skills. Sometimes, it even helps you find what you want to do in the future.
Before you start volunteering, it's important to let your parents join in your decisions. And you need to make sure everyone is happy with the people, activities or organizations you will help. If you can, volunteer with friends or family members. You can call local charities or companies to see if they need any help. If you're at secondary school, you could consider signing up for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. This programme includes a volunteering part and offers many ideas and support to help you begin.

Plastic production has been rising since the end of World War II. Plastic has greatly influenced modern life. It is widely used in clothing, electronic goods, cars and healthcare. In fact, plastic is not a single material. A study shows that 16,000 different chemicals are used in making plastics. When plastic ends up in nature, it can take hundreds of years to break down. It pollutes soil and water.
People have realized the plastic pollution problem. Thanks to modern recycling technology, we see products made from recycled plastic—from T-shirts to bags to building materials. This is the magic of turning waste plastic into valuable products.
Scientists are developing more and more effective methods to recycle waste plastic. For example, researchers break down plastics into reusable chemicals by using heat, pressure and a kind of special water. Another technology creates a plastic mix to break down waste plastic into oil for new plastics. Scientists also use electric current(电流)to turn waste plastic into high quality graphene(石墨烯). The graphene helps to develop new cancer treatments.
Recycling reduces the need to produce new plastic from oil. Besides, it helps to control environmental pollution. However, recycling plastic is not always easy. Different types of waste plastics must be separated and well cleaned.
China has been stressing the importance of recycling and has taken action to improve it. Many schools try to encourage students to recycle properly. For example, students may get an award, such as a small toy or a pencil, for putting empty bottles into smart recycling machines. Factories are encouraged to use recycled materials in their products. With each recycled bottle, China moves one step closer to a future where nothing is truly wasted—everything is just waiting for its next use.
61. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Oil B. Plastic C. Pollution D. Recycling
62. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Plastic B. The Harm of Plastic

Take local trips

Dear Tom,
It's great to hear that you're interested in the development of China! I'm happy to share with you the changes in my hometown over the past few years.
In the past, people lived in small and crowded houses, and life was not very convenient. The roads were slow and narrow, so it took a long time to get around. What's worse, the environment was badly polluted.
However, great changes have taken place in recent years. Now most families live in modern apartments, and life is much more convenient. High-speed trains make it easy and fast for us to travel. Besides, the environment has improved a lot — the sky is bluer, the water is cleaner, and my hometown is greener and more beautiful than before.
I'm proud of these changes, and I hope my hometown will become better and better. I also hope you can come and visit it one day!
Yours,
Li Hua
