Unit 3 Smart Learning 

Section A 2a-2d

I. Teaching Aims

1. Students can talk about the ways they learn English and tick the ways that are true for them in 2a.

2. Students can listen to a conversation in a school English club and complete the chart in 2b.

3. Students can listen again and choose the learning tips mentioned in 2c.

4. Students can talk about the difficulties they have in learning English and some ways to overcome them with a partner in 2d.

II. Key and Difficult Points

Key points:

1. Key words and phrases: look up words, dictionary, learning diary, take part in, read aloud, repeat dialogues, useful expressions, outside class, overcome.

2. Useful sentence patterns: "I learn English by + doing..."; "What do you find difficult about...?"; "One way to... is to..."

Difficult points:

1. Getting the specific information from the fast listening in 2b and 2c.

2. Using "by + doing" correctly and giving reasons to talk about their own problems in learning English.

III. Teaching Tools

1. Textbook (Go for it! / PEP Grade 9, Unit 3, Section A, pp.2).

2. Blackboard and coloured pens.

3. Audio recording and a player.

4. Word cards of learning-method phrases.

5. A printed chart for 2b (one for each pair).

6. PowerPoint (optional).

IV. Teaching Procedures

Step 1  Warm-up and Lead-in (5 mins)

1. The teacher asks: "How do you learn English?" and lets a few students answer freely.

2. The teacher writes the topic "Ways to learn English" on the blackboard and leads into the lesson.

[Purpose] To activate the topic words and students’ own experience of learning English.

Step 2  Pre-listening: 2a (6 mins)

1. Students read the six ways in 2a and tick the ones that are true for them.

2. Students check with a partner and share their answers with the class.

3. The teacher explains the new phrases: look up words in a dictionary, keep a learning diary, read aloud, repeat dialogues.

[Purpose] To prepare the vocabulary for listening and let students think about their own learning ways.

Step 3  While-listening: 2b (10 mins)

1. The teacher shows the chart on the board and explains what to fill in.

2. First listening: students listen for today’s question and the main idea.
