IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
The teacher shows pictures of students using different learning methods (reading a book, using a tablet, doing an experiment, working in a group, etc.) and asks: "What are they doing?" "Do you like these ways of learning?" Then introduces the topic: "Today we are going to talk about Smart Learning — how do we learn?"
[Purpose] To activate students' prior knowledge about learning and arouse their interest in the topic.
Step 2 1a — Learning Tips Discussion (8 mins)
The teacher asks students to look at the ten learning tips in 1a on the blackboard or PPT: take notes, use flashcards, review key ideas, do research projects, test myself, watch learning videos, use learning apps or websites, set learning goals, create mind maps, work in groups or teams. Students tick the ones they usually use and are encouraged to add more. Then the teacher checks answers with the whole class and explains any unfamiliar words (e.g., flashcards, mind maps).
[Purpose] To familiarize students with key vocabulary related to learning strategies and let them reflect on their own study habits.
