Hi, Jason,
Great to hear from you! I’d really like to be your pen-pal. I think Internet pal is a better name, isn’t it?
I’m the same age as you are and I’m in Grade 6 at a junior high school. I live with my mum and my elder sister. My mum works very hard. She’s a nurse. My sister goes to work, too, so I look after myself most of the time. My dad doesn’t live with us but I can see him once a week. He sometimes takes me to football games.
I like most sports, but my favourite sport is American football. I watch my team play every Sunday. They always win the games. They are the best in the league.
My best friend is my dog. His name is Abe, after Abraham Lincoln. Some people say it’s a silly name for a dog, but I like it. And so does he! I got him from the City Dog Pound. When he saw me, he wagged (摇摆) his tail, and I knew we were going to be friends. He goes everywhere with me. When my mum is on the night shift (轮班) at the hospital, Abe sleeps on my bed!
Write to me soon. Tell me something about Paris.
Yours,

Last month, my school held an art exhibition in the gym, and it became one of the most unforgettable experiences in my middle school life. I even submitted a watercolour painting of my hometown’s old street, which I had spent two weeks preparing.
On the opening day, the gym was crowded with students and teachers. Colourful paintings, delicate paper cuttings, and creative sculptures were displayed neatly on the shelves. When I saw my painting hanging on the wall with a small label with my name, my heart beat fast with excitement. Many classmates stopped to look at it and praised the bright colours I used to show the sunset over the old street.
I also met Ms Li, our art teacher. She patted my shoulder and said, “Your work tells a warm story about your hometown. Art is not just about being perfect—it’s about expressing your true feelings.” Her words made me understand the real meaning of art better.

Usually, fathers are not good at talking about love with their children. My father was like that. I never heard the words “I love you” from my father when I was a child. It was difficult for him to say those words. I never said those words to him, either.
A few years ago, I decided to change it. After thinking for a long time, I called my father on the phone and said, “Dad, I love you.” There was a moment of silence (沉默) at the other end of the line—maybe he was thinking about what to say. “Well, the same to you,” he said happily.
“Dad, I know you love me. When you are ready, you will say it too,” I said. Moments later, my mother called me and said that she was glad to hear us talking so openly.
A week later, Dad called me. He ended our talking on the phone with the words, “Son, I love you.” I was at work at that time. Tears came to my eyes when I heard the love. I always remember the special moment. We’re much closer now.

Hi, Jason,
Great to hear from you!

Before leaving, I took a photo with my painting. That day, I not only felt proud of my work but also fell more in love with art. It made me realise that art can connect people and share beautiful moments.

1.Was it easy for the writer’s father to say “I love you”?
2.What did the writer do to change the relationship with his father?
3.Why was there a moment of silence at the other end of the line?
4.What did the writer’s mother say when she called the writer?
5.How did the writer feel when he heard “I love you” from his father?
