Since 2012, China has achieved something amazing: it has added more than 1 million hectares (公顷) of wetlands. This means it restored an area as large as London every two years. Now, the country has over 56 million hectares of wetlands in total. To protect these areas, China has set up more than 2,200 wetland nature reserves, and the environment there has improved greatly.
Wetlands are very important. Although they cover only 6% of the Earth’s land, they are home to 40% of all plant and animal species. They also provide us with clean water, control floods, and help store carbon.
Among China’s actions, mangrove (红树林) protection stands out. In the past five years, the country has planted over 8,800 hectares of mangroves and restored another 8,200 hectares. Thanks to this, China’s mangrove area has increased by about 40% since the early 2000s, making it one of the few countries with a net gain. An expert said, “Restoring mangroves is one of the most cost-effective ways to fight climate change.” To encourage global cooperation, China set up the International Mangrove Center in Shenzhen in December.
Another key step is dealing with an invasive (侵略性的) plant called Spartina alterniflora (互花米草). This plant harms coastal ecosystems by slowing water flow and killing native species, which leaves birds with less food. Since a special action plan started in 2022, about 90% of the affected areas have been treated, successfully stopping its spread.
Besides, China has 903 national wetland parks. These parks not only protect 2.4 million hectares of wetlands but have also created more than 50 billion yuan for local economies. About 90% of them are free for everyone to visit. These parks show how China is successfully protecting nature while bringing benefits to people. Looking ahead, China will continue to carry out its Wetland Protection Law and develop new models like “wetland culture-tourism”.

Recently, the outdoor company Arc’teryx was in a “storm”—it held a firework show in the Himalayas in Tibet, a very special and fragile (脆弱) place.
The company said the show was to respect nature and they had already used green materials, but many people still couldn’t agree with it. They worried the fireworks would hurt the environment and their worries were not without reason.
We all know that the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (高原) has a famous name called “Roof of the World”, because it is the highest plateau in the world and also the largest plateau in China. However, it has another big title—“Water Tower of Asia”. Its water resources (资源) take up more than 1/5 of China’s total water resources, not including the part in the ice yet.
One in five people on Earth live on the freshwater in Himalayas. Climate change and environmental pollution (污染) may make it hard for more than a billion people to get enough fresh water. Besides, this area is home to over 10,000 types of plants and about 300 kinds of animals. Even a small change can cause big problems.
With the heated discussion on social media, the local government has started an investigation (调查). The firework artist Cai Guoqiang, who was in charge, has said sorry for what they did. Besides, his team has also promised to be more careful and serious when thinking about the possible environmental influence (影响) of each activity in the future.
1.Why couldn’t many people agree with this firework show?
A.They think the company should hold the show in other places.
B.They think the company spends too much money on the show.
C.They are worried that the fireworks may hurt the environment.
D.They don’t like the firework artist Cai Guoqiang and his works.
2.What can we know about the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?
A.It is the largest plateau in the world.
B.It is home to nearly 300 kinds of animals.
C.Its water resources take up 1/5 of China’s all water resources.
D.Environmental pollution has little influence on its water resources.
3.What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A.People will not buy the products of Arc’teryx in a long time.
B.Social media discussion always has a huge influence on all the events.
C.The local government will stop all shows in the places like Himalayas.
D.Artists may think more when they hold outdoor activities in the future.
4.Which of the following best shows the structure of this article?
A.①/②/③④/⑤ B.①/②③④/⑤ C.①②③/④/⑤ D.①②/③④⑤
5.What is the purpose of writing this article?
A.To introduce the beauty of the Himalayas in Tibet.
B.To let us know why the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is so important.
C.To show how Cai Guoqiang plans to hold his firework shows in the future.
D.To make the readers realize the importance of protecting the environment.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D 4.A 5.D
根据“The company said the show was to respect nature and they had already used green materials, but many people still couldn’t agree with it. They worried the fireworks would hurt the environment and their worries were not without reason.”
根据“Besides, this area is home to over 10,000 types of plants and about 300 kinds of animals.”
根据“Besides, his team has also promised to be more careful and serious when thinking about the possible environmental influence (影响) of each activity in the future.”
故选A。

Now, scientists use modern ways to get information to tell us what the weather will be like. But what did people do before modern technology? Well, not so long ago, people lived much closer to nature. People made predictions (预测) about the weather by watching what was happening in the insect (昆虫) world. Sometimes they were right, and sometimes they weren’t.
My grandfather spent his whole life as a farmer in Canada. I still remember his stories about how to predict the weather. For example, in summer, he would often stop to watch the anthills—those piles (堆) of earth in front of the ants’ homes. “Look closely at the anthills in July,” Grandpa said. “If the anthills are high in July, a snowy winter may arrive.” Of course, as a kid, I believed my grandfather. But you know what? The anthills are often correct. Not always, but often enough to make me a believer.
In September, Grandpa would often point out a woolly caterpillar (毛毛虫) on a sunny day. “Watch the orange circle around its belly (腹部). If it’s wide and full, we’re sure to have a warm and easy winter. If it’s thin, be careful! The winter will be severe.”
I am older now. I get my weather mostly from the television or the Internet. But I still stop to watch the anthills in July, and of course, the woolly caterpillars in September. Older people can teach us many things. My grandfather was not a scientist, but he knew a lot about insects and the weather.
1.According to Grandpa, if the anthills are high in July, maybe it will be ________.
A.a rainy winter B.a snowy winter
C.a long and cold winter D.a warm and easy winter
2.The underlined word “severe” means “________”.
A.hot B.warm C.cool D.cold
3.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Grandpa’s love for keeping insects. B.Weather predictions by watching insects.
C.Weather report in modern times. D.The importance of watching animals.
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author doesn’t believe in modern weather reports.
B.The author still trusts his grandfather’s ways of predicting weather.
C.The author has become a scientist studying insects.
D.The author stops watching insects for weather predictions.
5.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.the Power of Observation B.Watching Insects to Predict the Weather
C.Weather Report in Modern Times D.Different Ways to Make Predictions
根据第二段中“If the anthills are high in July, a snowy winter may arrive.”
根据第三段中“If it’s wide and full, we’re sure to have a warm and easy winter. If it’s thin, be careful! The winter will be severe.”
根据最后一段中“But I still stop to watch the anthills in July, and of course, the woolly caterpillars in September.”

1 Tomatoes are easy to grow. They like warm temperatures, plenty of direct sunlight and dry weather for best results.
2 Eggplants are hot-season vegetables that need lots of sunlight. They grow best when the weather is very hot and there is lots of water in the fields.
3 Mangoes require warm weather for fast growth. As they need very wet soil, choose a time when there will be plenty of rain. Weather that is too hot is bad for them.

5 Potatoes need warm weather and dry soil for best growth. They also need cloudy conditions for better growth.
A.The weather in July is windy. Sometimes there are typhoons (台风) in July.
B.August is the hottest month of the year. It’s always very sunny during the day. It rains a lot in the evening. It is also the wettest month.
C. Most days in February have clear, sunny skies with warm temperatures. It seldom rains, so February is also one of the driest months.
D.December is one of the coldest months of the year. Nights can be very cold. Days are mostly sunny, with some rain but not too much.
E. April is a warm spring month, not too hot. It is also very wet, with plenty of rain.

1.How much wetland area has China added since 2012 according to the passage?
A.Over 56 million hectares.
B.Over 1 million hectares.
C.An area the size of London.

2.What is one of the key actions China has taken to protect mangroves?
A.Setting up more than 2,200 nature reserves.
B.Controlling the spread of Spartina alterniflora.
C.Planting and restoring thousands of hectares of mangroves.

Guangdong is a beautiful province in southern China. 1 This makes it different from many other places in China.
In spring, the weather becomes warm and wet. It rains quite often, and sometimes the rain is very heavy. 2 The air feels fresh, and everything looks green and lively. It’s a wonderful time to visit parks and enjoy nature.

Autumn is probably the best season. The weather is warm but not too hot. There’s less rain, and the sky is usually clear and blue. It’s great for outdoor activities like hiking or having picnics. 4
Winter here is short and mild (温和的). It’s cool but not cold, and it almost never snows. While there’s sometimes light rain, most days are dry and pleasant. People usually just need to wear a light jacket.
