Unit 7 When Tomorrow Comes
Section B 2a-2c (Vocabulary in Use)
I. Teaching Aims
1. Students can write out the opposites of the words in 2a (more/less, possible/impossible, better/worse, challenging/easy, appear/disappear, winner/loser, positive/negative, everywhere/nowhere) and learn to use a dictionary.
2. Students can use the five verbs in the box (accept, develop, influence, mention, service) in their correct forms to complete the sentences in 2b.
3. Students can complete the short passage about AI in 2c with challenge, create, influence, quality, traffic and bad in their correct forms.
4. Students can talk simply about how AI will influence the future world using the new words.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points: The opposites in 2a; the five verbs in 2b and their correct forms; the six words in 2c and the passage about AI.
Difficult points: The word-form changes in 2c (create -> creative, bad -> worse, challenge -> challenges); using "influence" correctly as a verb or a noun.
III. Teaching Tools
Textbook (Section B 2a-2c), blackboard and coloured pens, word cards for the opposites and the target words, the sentences and passage shown on the screen, a dictionary, and a simple PPT (optional).
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in (3 mins)
1. Show a few pictures of AI and robots, then ask: What will the future world be like?
2. Get students to say some words they have learnt about the future.
[Purpose] To activate the topic and the words learnt in the reading part.
Step 2: 2a — Write the opposites (7 mins)
1. Students read the eight words and write their opposites; they may use a dictionary.
2. Check the answers in pairs, then on the whole class: less, impossible, worse, easy, disappear, loser, negative, nowhere.
3. Ask one or two students to add their own words and let the class say the opposites.
[Purpose] To enlarge vocabulary and train students to use a dictionary.
Step 3: 2b — Complete the sentences (10 mins)
1. Read the box (accept, develop, influence, mention, service) and the five sentences.
2. Students choose a word for each blank and change its form if needed.
3. Check answers: 1 mentioned 2 develop 3 influenced 4 services 5 Accept. Ask why each form is used.
[Purpose] To practise the correct forms of the verbs in real sentences.
Step 4: 2c — Complete the passage (12 mins)
1. Students read the whole passage about AI first to get the general idea.
2. Fill in the blanks with challenge, create, influence, quality, traffic, bad in correct forms.
3. Check answers: influence, quality, traffic, creative, worse, challenges. Point out the word changes (create -> creative, bad -> worse, challenge -> challenges).
[Purpose] To use the new words in a real context and notice how word forms change.
Step 5: Talk and summarise (8 mins)
1. In pairs, students talk about how AI will influence our life, using today’s words.
2. Some pairs share; the teacher writes useful sentences on the blackboard and summarises the key words.
[Purpose] To move from accurate use to real talking about the future.
Step 6: Homework
1. Copy the new words and their opposites in the exercise book.
2. Write 3-4 sentences about how AI will influence our life, using at least three words from this class.
V. Blackboard Design
Opposites: more-less possible-impossible better-worse appear-disappear winner-loser
2b verbs: accept / develop / influence / mention / service
2c word forms: influence quality traffic create-creative bad-worse challenge-challenges
Key sentence: Will AI make our life better or worse? It depends on how we use it.
六、教学反思
本节课为词汇运用课,整体完成度较好。后进生问题集中在两点:一是2a反义词只凭印象,impossible、negative等拼写易错;二是2c词形转换(create变creative、bad变worse)容易照抄原形。改进:把词形变化单独板书对照带读,反义词配对后再追问"为什么这样变",造句和谈未来先同桌互说再举手,给后进生模仿课本例句的机会。
