Many teenagers have trouble dealing with stress in daily life. Some people believe that stress is completely bad for young people. But in fact, not all stress is harmful. We should learn to tell different kinds of stress apart.
Bad stress usually comes from too much pressure. When students face endless homework, high expectations from parents and heavy exam worries, they may feel worried all the time. This kind of stress can influence sleep and health. It may make teenagers lose confidence and feel down. If bad stress lasts for a long time, it will do great harm to both body and mind.
However, there is also good stress. Good stress appears when we meet challenges. For example, before a speech or an important competition, you may feel a little nervous. This nervous feeling pushes you to prepare harder. It helps you become more active and try your best. It can make you grow and improve yourself.
So what should we do when we meet stress? First, do not be afraid of it. Try to find out where your stress comes from. If it is bad stress, you can talk with your parents, teachers or friends. You can also take exercise or develop hobbies to relax yourself. If it is good stress, just accept it and make use of it.
Life is full of challenges. Stress is a common part of growth. Instead of running away from stress, we should learn to face it in a wise way.
29. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. All stress is bad for teenagers.
B. Teenagers should stay away from all stress.
C. We should know different kinds of stress and deal with it wisely.
D. Stress mainly comes from schoolwork.
30. Which of the following is bad stress?
A. Nervousness before a school speech. B. Worrying too much about exams day and night.
C. Excitement before a sports match. D. Pressure to make progress in study.
31. What can good stress bring to teenagers?
A. Poor sleep and bad health. B. Less confidence in themselves.
C. Power to work harder and make progress. D. Feelings of sadness all day long.
C
Which part of the world has the most nearsighted (近视的) students? Just look around you - it’s East Asia. Nine in 10 school leavers in major East Asian cities are nearsighted, according to the BBC. Experts say books and video games are not to blame. East Asian students, they say, aren’t getting enough sunlight.
People become nearsighted because their eyeballs grow out of shape and light entering their eyes cannot focus (聚焦) correctly. The body can produce a chemical called dopamine (多巴胺) to stop eyeballs from changing shape. And guess what scientists have just discovered? Sunlight can help our bodies produce more dopamine, reported AFP.
According to the study, primary school students in Singapore spend only 30 minutes outdoors every day. But in Australia, kids spend three hours a day outside. As a result, fewer children in Australia are nearsighted—only 10 percent, compared with 90 percent in Singapore.
“Children in East Asia basically go to school... go home and stay inside. They study and they watch television,” Ian Morgan of the Australian National University told AFP.
But being a bookworm or a couch potato does not directly harm the eyes, added Morgan. “As long as they get outside, it doesn’t seem to matter how much study they do,” he explained. “There are some kids who study hard and get outside and play hard and they are generally fine. The ones who are at major risk are the ones who study hard and don’t get outside. As a result of huge educational pressures and the construction (构成) of a child’s day, the amount of time they spend outside in bright light is minimized.”
Experts suggest children should stay outside for two to three hours every day. This can include time spent in the playground and walking to and from school.
32. What can we conclude from Paragraph Two?
A. Dopamine is a chemical that causes eyeballs to grow out of shape.
B. Dopamine can stop light entering the eyes from focusing correctly.
C. Spending time in the sun helps increase levels of dopamine in the body.
D. The more dopamine a person has in their body, the better eyesight he or she has.
33. According to Morgan, what kind of people are most likely to suffer from nearsightedness?
A. Those who like watching TV. B. Those who take exercise regularly.
C. Those who study hard and play hard outdoors. D. Those who stay indoors studying all day.
34. The underlined word “minimized” in the passage probably means ________.
A. made better use of B. reduced as much as possible
C. taken little notice of D. paid much attention to
35. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. Eyes need to see the sun B. The most nearsighted students in the world
C. People become nearsighted D. Books and video games are not to blame
D
Recently, I asked a seeing friend who had just walked in the woods what she had noticed. “Nothing special,” she replied.
How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. If I can get so much pleasure from touch, how much more beauty must be found by sight (视力)? And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes for just three days.
On the first day, I should want to see the people who have made my life worth living and the books which have been read to me. In the afternoon, I should take a walk in the woods and admire the beauties of nature. That night, I should not be able to sleep.
On my second day, I should go to the museums to see man’s progress. I should try to explore the spirit of man through his art. In the evening, I should spend at the movies.
The following day, I should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life. At midnight, permanent night would close in on me again, and I should realize how much I had left unseen.
I who am blind can give one suggestion to those who see: Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be blind. The same is true of other senses. Hear the songs of birds, as if you would be deaf tomorrow. Smell the flowers, as if tomorrow you could never smell again... But of all the senses, I’m sure that sight must be the most pleasant.
(Adapted from Three Days to See by Helen Keller)

A. Read books to people on the first day. B. Go to the movies on the second day.

六、阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答下列问题,每小题答案不超过10个单词。
Some people believe that self-reflection (自我反思) is a good habit for teenagers. What exactly is self-reflection? It means thinking honestly about your own behaviour, feelings and decisions after something has happened.
Many teenagers are too busy with schoolwork. They spend most of their time doing homework or taking part-time after-school classes. They seldom stop to look back on what they have done. They just keep moving forward without thinking. However, self-reflection plays an important role in our growth.
When you reflect, you can see your weak points clearly. For example, you may find that you often lose your temper when you are under great pressure. Then you can try to find ways to control your moods. Besides, self-reflection also helps you know your advantages. You may realize you are good at organizing group activities. This will build up your confidence.
You do not need a long time for self-reflection. You can spend five to ten minutes every night before going to bed. You may ask yourself these simple questions: What did I do well today? What mistake did I make? What should I improve tomorrow?
Self-reflection will not bring quick changes to you. But if you keep doing it every day, little by little you will make great progress.

【答案】29. C 30. B 31.

【33题详解】
第五段Ian Morgan提出“The ones who are at major risk are the ones who study hard and don’t get outside”,指整天待在室内学习的人最容易近视。
【34题详解】
第五段画线词所在句“the amount of time they spend outside in bright light is minimized”,结合前文学业压力大、孩子大多待在家,可知孩子在户外强光下的时间被尽可能缩减。
【35题详解】
通读全文可知,文章主要讲述了阳光对预防近视的作用,并建议孩子多待在户外见到阳光。因此文章的最佳标题是“眼睛需要看到太阳”。

【答案】例文
Dear Chairperson,
I’m writing to recommend Tom as a volunteer of the Sunshine Buddy Club. I believe he is perfectly fit for this position.
First, Tom has a good personality. He is patient and confident, and he is always willing to listen to others carefully. Besides, he is good at dealing with different teenage troubles, whether they are heavy study pressure, disagreements with parents or conflicts between friends. He can always come up with proper ways to comfort people.
Last month, one of our classmates was anxious because of too much schoolwork. Tom spent a whole afternoon talking with him patiently, and gave him some useful advice. The classmate felt much better later.
I hope you can agree to my recommendation.
Yours,
Li Hua
