Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked.
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat, Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.
The wind blew hard. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha seemed a little nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words, Martha left the room quickly. Then Mary looked around the house. Suddenly she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out, “What are you doing here?” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.”

① AI learning helpers are popular among middle school students these days. They are simple apps on phones or computers. They can help students look up new words, explain difficult sentences and give simple learning advice. However, students must use these AI tools in a proper way.
② First, AI can save much time for us. When we meet hard new words or long difficult sentences, it tells us meanings and pronunciations quickly. It is a useful tool for our English study.
③ But AI cannot think for us. If we just copy answers from AI without thinking carefully, our study skills will not improve. We may become lazy and stop thinking on our own.
④ Teachers give some useful advice: try to work out problems by yourself first. Think over the questions before asking AI for help. Use AI only when you really cannot solve the problem. Treat AI as a helper, not a replacement.
⑤ If we use AI wisely and keep independent thinking, it will become a good partner in our school study.
18.What can AI learning helpers do for students?
A.Think instead of students.
B.Explain difficult sentences.
C.Finish all homework for students.
D.Choose good friends for students.
19.What does the underlined word “replacement” mean?

When you look at a piece of Chinese paper-cutting, you might notice its beautiful patterns—but hidden in those lines are special numbers that have been passed down for hundreds of years. These numbers aren’t just for counting; they carry cultural meanings and make the artworks balanced and meaningful.
Take the “double happiness” (双喜) paper-cutting, a common design for weddings, as an example. The pattern is made of 10 small squares: 4 on the top, 4 on the bottom, and 2 in the middle. Why 10? In Chinese culture, 10 stands for “perfection”—it comes from the idea that “heaven has 9 layers and earth has 1,” combining to make 10, a number that symbolizes wholeness. Also, the two “xi” (喜) characters in “double happiness” each have 12 strokes. The total 24 strokes represent “24 solar terms” in a year, a symbol of hope for a life full of good seasons, as the solar terms have guided farming and daily life for thousands of years.
Another classic design is the “lotus with fish” (荷花鱼). The lotus flower in the cut has 16 petals (花瓣). Old paper-cutters say 16 is a “lucky even number”—it’s double 8, and 8 is connected to “prosperity” (wealth) because the Chinese character for 8 looks like it’s opening up, suggesting growth and expansion. The fish next to the lotus has 5 fins: 2 on its back, 2 on its sides, and 1 on its tail. The number 5 here represents the “five elements” (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) in Chinese philosophy. It’s believed that if the five elements are in balance, the family will be healthy and free from misfortune.
However, keeping these number rules alive is getting hard. Young people who learn paper-cutting often focus more on the patterns than the hidden numbers, as they rarely hear the old stories behind the counts. Some even simplify the designs—for example, using 8 petals for the lotus instead of 16—to make cutting easier. To protect this tradition, some craftsmen now write down the number secrets in books and teach them in workshops. They don’t just show how to cut the shapes; they explain the connections between numbers and ancient beliefs, hoping that the next generation will not only cut beautiful paper but also carry on the cultural wisdom in the numbers.
22.Why does the number 10 symbolize “perfection” in the “double happiness” paper-cutting?
A.It matches the 10 small squares in the pattern’s structure.
B.It comes from the ancient idea of “heaven (9) + earth (1) = wholeness.”
C.It represents the 10 layers of meaning in wedding traditions.
D.It is the total number of strokes of the two “xi” characters.
23.What can we infer about young people’s simplified paper-cut designs?
A.They make the designs more popular among foreign audiences.
B.They help pass down the cultural meaning of the original numbers.
C.They may lead to the loss of the hidden number-related wisdom.
D.They show young people’s creativity in improving traditional crafts.
24.The writer mentions the “24 solar terms” and “five elements” in the passage to ________.
A.prove that Chinese paper-cutting is older than other traditional arts
B.explain why the numbers in paper-cutting have cultural value
C.compare different cultural symbols used in wedding and daily designs
D.show how paper-cutting patterns guide people’s farming and daily life
25.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Ancient Chinese beliefs about numbers have changed the way paper-cutting is made.
B.Chinese paper-cutting’s hidden numbers carry cultural wisdom but face risks of not being passed down.
C.The “double happiness” and “lotus with fish” are the most important paper-cutting designs.
D.Craftsmen are trying to save traditional paper-cutting by writing down cutting techniques.

Do you know what to do if your friends are stressed (有压力的) and come to you for help? 26
Nature helps reduce stress. 27 Anyway, being outside is one of the best things you can do to help your friends reduce stress.
Help out at their home.
Doing housework like cooking or cleaning can make people more stressed when they are going through a hard time. 28 Besides, you can offer to help them clean the room after eating.
Be a good influence.
Think about what your friends really need. Don’t ask them to go for a trip if they need to get more sleep. Don’t let them out of school even if you know that will help reduce their stress for the moment. It might be easy to be the friend who always supports everything. But more than support, they need someone to help them become better. A good friend never lets them keep going into the worst.
Make them laugh.
You’ve heard “laughter is the best medicine”, haven’t you? It’s certainly correct. 29 Tell them a funny story, or send them funny pictures that you’ve shared together. They’ll be laughing so hard and forget what they were stressed about in the first place.
30 Sometimes your friends just need someone to share their problems with. Let them talk about what’s worrying them without cutting in or judging. A caring ear can be more helpful than any advice.
A.A good laugh can cheer your friends up and ease their mind.
B.Here are some useful suggestions.
C.Take a walk outside or go for a bike ride.
D.Go for a trip to a faraway place if possible.
E.So why not surprise your friends by bringing over dinner one night?
F.Be a good listener.
G.Remind them that they can always depend on you for anything.

Going slow with fast fashion
Teenagers Tess and Monica love fashion, but lately they’ve changed the way they think about the clothes they buy.
“We used to buy lots of new clothing online,” says Tess. “On social media, we would see a celebrity or influencer wearing a nice outfit, and then a few days later we’d see something similar advertised online. These items were cheap. It was easy to get them delivered.”
“It’s natural to want to keep up with fashion,” adds Monica. “Who doesn’t love wearing something new? But often we only wore a garment (一件衣服) a few times before throwing it away. It didn’t feel right. I heard the term ‘fast fashion’, and we decided to do some research. We were shocked!”
Worldwide, the fashion industry creates 80 billion new items of clothing every year, causing significant problems. A lot of clothes are made from polyester, a plastic. When people throw them away, these items have to go somewhere: either they are burnt, or they are sent to landfill. Burning plastic causes air pollution. And plastic can take hundreds of years to break down, so plastic in landfill just sits there. The landfill problem keeps growing.
“We weren’t sure how we could change things,” says Tess. “But we decided to take small steps. We started looking for second-hand clothes — things someone else has finished with but are still in good condition. I’ve found some fantastic outfits in thrift stores!”
“Of course we can’t stop buying new clothes altogether, but do we need to buy so many, so often?” asks Monica. “There’s an idea called the ‘30-wear rule’. When buying a new item of clothing, ask yourself, ‘Will I wear this at least 30 times?’ If the answer is no, don’t buy it!”
“We’ve certainly changed our thinking about fashion,” says Tess. “We encourage other young people to think about it too. The simple message from us is: buy less clothing and wear it for longer!”
54.What does the “30-wear rule” idea mean?
__________________________________________
55.Why did Tess and Monica share their experiences?

56.Will you apply the “30-wear rule” in your daily life? Why or why not?

20.What is the structure (篇章结构) of the passage?
A.① / ②③ / ④⑤ B.① / ② / ③④⑤
C.①② / ③ / ④⑤ D.① / ②③④ / ⑤

原文第①段“They can help students look up new words, explain difficult sentences and give simple learning advice.”
19.原文第④段“Treat AI as a helper, not a replacement.”
21.全文围绕学生应当如何正确、合理地使用AI学习助手展开,因此最佳标题为“How to use AI learning helpers well”。

根据“In Chinese culture, 10 stands for ‘perfection’—it comes from the idea that ‘heaven has 9 layers and earth has 1,’ combining to make 10, a number that symbolizes wholeness.”
根据“Young people who learn paper-cutting often focus more on the patterns than the hidden numbers, as they rarely hear the old stories behind the counts. Some even simplify the designs—for example, using 8 petals for the lotus instead of 16—to make cutting easier.”
根据“Also, the two ‘xi’ (喜) characters in ‘double happiness’ each have 12 strokes. The total 24 strokes represent ‘24 solar terms’ in a year, a symbol of hope for a life full of good seasons, as the solar terms have guided farming and daily life for thousands of years.”

__________________________________________
56.Will you apply the “30-wear rule” in your daily life? Why or why not?
__________________________________________
54.It means if you won’t wear a new item of clothing at least 30 times, don’t buy it. 55.To encourage other young people to think about it too. 56.Yes, I will. Because applying the “30-wear rule” can help me save money and avoid wasting resources. It is also a good way to protect the environment by reducing the pollution caused by throwing away clothes.
根据第6段“When buying a new item of clothing, ask yourself, ‘Will I wear this at least 30 times?’ If the answer is no, don't buy it!”
55.根据第7段“We encourage other young people to think about it too.”
