A sports newspaper. C. A health report. D. A school magazine. B Do you have a fear of public speaking? Do you ever get nervous when speaking in front of a group of people? I remember I used to be deadly afraid of public speaking. My legs would get weak as I made my way in front of the audience. My mouth would tremble as I began to say the first few words. I would avoid eye contact (目光接触) unless I found someone with a smiling face, and then I would just look at that person for the whole speech. Have you experienced these things? Luckily, there are some ways to overcome a fear of public speaking. Understand the cause of the fear Find out why it’s a fear in the first place. The main reason is the fear of being embarrassed (窘迫的). Most of you are afraid of being laughed at, doing anything foolish or having the audience judge you. When there are other people who might judge you or think badly of you, this causes you to get nervous. Change your mindset (心态) Try not to think about yourself and what the audience might think of you. Instead, think about the audience and how you can best deliver (传递) your message across. Then, you will be able to get over this fear. Practise It’s best to practise in front of a group of supportive people. This will not only make public speaking easier but also help you gain confidence. The more you practise it, the easier it will get. The way I was able to get over my fear of speaking came in two periods (时期). The first period was in high school. I entered the speech class, and all I wanted was to get a pass. I didn’t care about winning. Even when I forgot what to say, I didn’t get nervous. The next period was during my job as a trainer. My job was to motivate (激励) people. So gradually, my focus went from thinking about myself to not caring about that, and finally to thinking about my audience. In the two periods, my mindset changed from the mindset of fear to the mindset of power. So overcoming a fear of public speaking comes down to having the right mindset and practice. 5. Have you ever found a dazi? These days, finding a dazi is becoming popular with young Chinese people. A dazi is a person we eat with, study with, exercise with or take a trip with, but we didn’t know him or her before. The dazi culture is about finding the right person to do the right activity with. Xiaoyue, a young woman from Ningxia, has met many dazi because of her love for basketball and biking. Having a dazi not only gives her company(陪伴)but also helps her enjoy sports more. These dazi relationships are very different from friendships. As for close friends, we need to stay in close touch. With a dazi, you don’t have to do so. Many dazi may not meet again after a trip or a game together. So, many people believe having a dazi makes their social life easier and more comfortable. Finding a dazi shows that young Chinese people want clearer boundaries (界限) in their social relationships. Dazi will not talk or ask a lot about their personal lives. And they hope that these relationships can let them share their hobbies and interests, or that they can help them to improve themselves. Although finding a dazi has many good points, we should be careful and put our safety first. 9. How does the writer start the passage? A. By telling a story. B. By asking questions. C. The activity of finding dazi is a new way of social contact (社交) for young people. ②The idea of this activity is easy to understand. It helps people to find someone who has the same hobby as them and it doesn’t take much time. With one or a few dazi, people have more fun in the activities they are interested in. ③A girl called Ge Jinyuan is a high school student from Shandong. She likes talking with her meal dazi when she is having lunch. “We love to share our ideas on the food,” said the girl. “If my meal dazi doesn’t come to school one day, I will be sad.” ④“It takes a lot of time to make friends with others. But it doesn’t need much time to have a dazi,” said another girl Shi Zhimin, a student from Shanxi. Ge Jinyuan also has the same idea. She doesn’t want to spend too much time making friends, so having a dazi is good for her. She can feel relaxed and then has more time to study. ⑤Also, ________. “Once, my game dazi and I did something wrong when playing the game Eggy Party, but we worked together to turn the tide (扭转局势). By playing the game together, I find I like working with others now!” Shi Zhimin said. ⑥Dazi is usually helpful, but it can be dangerous. People may lie (撒谎) on the Internet: For example, a young and beautiful girl on the Internet may be an old, short, and heavy man in real life. So, think twice when finding dazi. 13. But is there one that can be a lifetime lesson? Confucius’ student Zi Gong once asked him the question. Confucius gave him a good answer. What did he say? “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” What does it mean? This line means that if you don’t want others to do something to you, then don’t do it to them. In other words, don’t do something to people that even you can’t stand (承受). It tells us to think about others’ feelings. This will help us all get along. Confucius asked his students to follow and practise this rule in their lives. This rule is useful in our daily lives, too. For example, if you don’t want others to talk about you behind your back, then don’t talk about others behind theirs. Another example is how to get along in group work. If you are a leader in a group, you should think about each member’s feelings. Don’t be bossy (专横的). To practise this rule better in our everyday life, you can ask yourself a few questions and your answers must be honest. The first question is, “If I do it, will it hurt somebody?” If the answer is yes, then it’s not a good thing to do. The second question is, “If I do it, will I regret later?” If we do something wrong, we’ll feel sorry about it, even if we can find excuses for our actions. And a final but very important question is, “What’s my first feeling about it?” These all can help you judge whether your behaviour is ethical (道德的) or not. 51.
