Look! Growing up is often seen as a journey with different stages (阶段). As we pass through each one, our understanding of “making it” changes. Here’s a look at each stage and the surprising lessons they teach us about life and growth.
Primary School: “Almost Done”
In primary school, life is simple. With praise from teachers and small achievements, children are often led to believe that they have almost mastered (掌握) what they need for the future. “Almost done” perfectly expresses this sense, since each year they achieve something new, like learning to spell or completing a book.
Children may feel great at this stage, but it’s only the start of their journey, preparing them for future challenges and learning.
High School: “Very Close (接近)”
High school brings a new level of responsibility and choice. Students face more important tests, begin thinking about careers, and learn to be on their own. At this stage, many believe they’re “very close” to adulthood.
In fact, high school is for trying new things, not being perfect at them. Students are introduced to many sides of life but still have much to learn.
University: “Yes!”
University or college is a great achievement, and completing a degree (学位) often feels like climbing to the top. With specialized knowledge and skills, many students believe they're fully prepared to face the world.
The “Yes!” moment of graduation soon gives way to the reality that a degree is just one part of the bigger picture in building a wonderful career and life.
Life: “What!”
Upon entering the “real world”, young people often feel the challenges of life hard to deal with. Grown-up life doesn’t come with a guidebook. Responsibilities like managing your money, keeping friendships, balancing work and life and staying well require skills not fully taught in school.
This stage teaches us that life is about never stopping learning. To do it well, we must be ready to adjust our courses (调整航线), understand our own hearts, and know when to change directions.
The truth about growing up is that each stage brings new lessons and challenges, from the ABCs and 123s to the discovery that success is a lifelong journey. Take this journey with an open mind, enjoy the ride, and be ready to learn from everything that happens.
What growing up really 1 us
Growing up isn’t a straight path to success. Each stage of life brings new challenges and 2 our understanding of success.
Different stages
Primary School
Children often come to believe they have well 3 for the future. But that’s far from the full picture.
High School
Students get more responsibility and choice by taking exams, thinking about careers, and learning to depend on 4 . Although they think it is close to adult life, the stage is only about trying.
University
Many students feel like 5 the top when graduating. However, they soon realize that a degree is not 6 for a wonderful career and life.
Life
It’s natural to feel unprepared for real life challenges. And this reminds you to 7 learning outside the classroom.
There is no end to growing up. Stay open to what is to come, find 8 from it and know there will always be more to learn and experience.
Do you think you are close to success? Please share at least one reason.

You are in your last year of junior high school. Have you thought about what it will be like in high school? Are you ready for a fresh start in a new environment? Some students from the United States share their tips.
Organize and plan your studies
“The biggest thing is to stay organized,” says Philip Tubiolo, a graduate from Bayport High School. Tubiolo is now at Stony Brook University. He says that using either paper or online tools can help with your studies. “I would transfer paper notes online and make study guides. Everything was in one spot for finals and midterms.”
Find your interests
“I knew I was more of a science kid,” says Bayport’s Tubiolo. “I took AP ( Advanced Placement) Biology in 10th grade and I have loved biology since then.” AP classes are college-level classes that high school students can take. He also joined his school’s Science team. This allowed him to take part in biology and maths competitions. He even decided on a college major (专业), although most students don’t need to make this choice so early. Tubiolo is studying biomedical (生物医学) engineering at his university.
Find healthy ways to relieve (缓解) stress and have fun
“It’s not just study, study, study,” says Roslyn High School student Todd Warshawsky. “I was a track (田径) runner. That was a stress reliever from study.” Sachem North High School graduate Erin Maryzek agrees. “Though schoolwork is important, you should have a little fun after a hard day’s study.” says the Northeastern University freshman.
Hold off on dating (约会)
Amityville’s Esteban Idrovo is now studying physics at Stony Brook University. “I started dating in ninth grade. I got too distracted (分心的). I lost a lot of friends because I got so caught up in this relationship,” the 19-year-old said. “So, hold off on dating as much as you can.”

Cellphones were invented so people could talk anytime and anywhere. But today, they’re used for a 1 everything except talking—especially by teenagers.
For most young people, the phone is a tool for other forms of c 2 like texting, or messages on apps such as QQ or WeChat instead of phone calls. Of course, teenagers make or answer calls sometimes, but usually only in s 3 situations, such as emergencies (紧急情况) or when a parent is calling.
According to Anne Cordier, an expert in Information and Communication Science, when teenagers c 4 to text instead of making calls, it doesn’t mean they are lazy or rude. In fact, it’s often their way of setting boundaries (边界) in a world where people feel they are expected to be there all the time. “Sometimes I leave my phone on s 5 mode (模式) on purpose,” 17-year-old Elsa told Cordier. “That way, I can have some peace.” For them, it’s p 6 to check if the person is free before calling.
Not answering the phone also gives young people some control, w 7 answering it means there’s no time to prepare what to say, which makes them uncomfortable. On the other hand, they feel safer when texting because they can write, delete, and rewrite u 8 they are ready. They can also wait before r 9 , which makes the exchange calmer and less stressful.
Older generations may still see phone calls as personal and caring, but younger generations find the same comfort (慰藉) in texts, silence or even a simple emoji. In the end, n 10 generation is wrong—they just follow different rules of communication.

Are you an introvert (someone who likes being alone) or an extrovert (someone who enjoys being with others)? Many people will be able to answer that question in a second. They may see it as one of those things that cannot be changed—as standard as their birthday. But a new study says something d 1 —how extroverted you are can change over time. You might not stay the same kind of person forever. It d 2 on how you handle (应对) your stress.
The study, led by researchers at Michigan State University, found that as people get better at d 3 with their stress, they become more extroverted and open to new experiences. The researchers f 4 more than 2,000 people over an 18-year period from early middle age. During those 18 years, the people in the study completed the diaries three times. Each time, they wrote for eight days. In their diaries, they talked about their f 5 , their personality, and the things that made them stressed.
Lead author William Chopik said, “The cool thing about this study is that, as you got better at handling stress day by day, you also became more extroverted, agreeable and o 6 to new experiences over time.” He added, “These s 7 improvements add up and change your personality over time.” However, he said that the opposite was also t 8 . The study showed that people who found it difficult to handle became more introverted, less agreeable and less open to new experiences.
A 9 the study didn’t talk about how to better handle stress, Chopik said that its results can give people a little hope. He explained, “If you can find ways to m 10 your feelings, you might be able to change your personality slowly.” Chopik also said that people who are more extroverted, agreeable and open to new experiences are more likely to be happier.
(26-27九年级上·江苏南京·阶段检测)A thoughtful gift

Time
You can give your time in so many ways.

And a gift doesn’t even have to be “s 6 ”. It could be s 7 hanging out together, including watching your friend’s must-see movie, visiting your mother’s favourite museum or asking a grandparent to tell you more about his/her childhood. The gift of time is v 8 —think carefully about how the other person would wish to spend a few hours or a day together.
Meaning
Why w 9 for a birthday or Christmas? From “I’m sorry” to “I love you” and “thank you” to “good luck”, gifts can take many messages and c 10 inner feelings of regret, thankfulness when you are too shy to speak them out. For foreign students who want to learn in China, before deciding to study Chinese in China locally, it’s good to carefully understand what to expect from the culture s 1 that comes with it.
One clear difference between Chinese culture and Western culture lies in communication styles. While Western culture often pays a 2 to clear words, Chinese communication is more indirect and subtle. For example, in the West, it’s common to express one’s opinion openly and directly, while in China, it’s more l 3 for people to use suggestions to pass their thoughts, out of respect and to keep the understanding in relationships.
Western culture is known for its focus on individualism (个人主义), where personal a 4 and independence are h 5 valued. For example, moving out of one’s parents’ home soon after being 18 years old is common in the West. I 6 , Chinese culture is more collectivistic (集体主义的), prioritizing the happiness of the family or group over individual needs. This could be seen in the strong ties between family members and the i 7 of teamwork.
Understanding and thinking about special sides of Chinese culture are important for improving strong cross-cultural relationships and c 8 . Recognizing the value of learning from other cultures can lead to a r 9 community among different cultures. There is no doubt that I was unhappy, but I won’t stop trying. I’ll find a way to 6 on my own so that I can make the team next year.
I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and 7 food to homeless people in the community. Last week, I was serving hot soup 8 the old man began telling me his army stories, and the work suddenly allowed me to meet more people from different backgrounds.

(25-26九年级上·江苏南京·阶段检测)It was Monday morning, and the ninth-grade classroom was in chaos. Mr. Wilde’s English 1 had disappeared from his desk over the weekend. The strange thing was that nothing else was taken—not the computer, not the money in the drawer, only the thirty-five homework papers.
Lily, a quiet but observant girl who loved detective novels, decided to investigate. She noticed three important clues that others had missed. First, there were faint 2 footprints near the teacher’s desk, though it hadn’t rained for days. Second, the window lock was broken from the 3 , not the outside. Third, she found a tiny 4 thread caught on the edge of the desk drawer.
Lily thought about who had been in the classroom last Friday. There was Zhang Wei, who had stayed after class to ask questions. There was also the cleaning lady, Mrs. Chen, who came every evening. And there was the 5 , Tom, who had borrowed the key to get a book he forgot.
Lily examined everyone’s shoes after the morning exercises. Zhang Wei wore black sneakers, clean and dry. Mrs. Chen wore comfortable brown shoes with a special pattern. Tom wore 6 with a little mud on the edges. Looking closer, Lily noticed Tom’s jacket had a small tear near the 7 , and the thread matched the blue thread she found!

The real answer came when Lily checked the homework records. Tom hadn’t actually submitted his work. He had been absent on Friday when others submitted theirs. He must have taken all the papers so his missing homework wouldn’t be noticed!
Lily didn’t embarrass Tom publicly. Instead, she told Mr. Wilde what she found, and the teacher handled the situation privately. The mystery was solved not by magic, but by careful 1 and logical thinking—the true tools of any detective.

(25-26九年级上·江苏南京·期中)China’s national soccer team missed out on the World Cup, but a new local league called Suchao is lighting up hearts in Jiangsu Province. Since it was launched in May, 13 city teams have held exciting weekend matches. Over 195,000 fans attended the first three rounds, with one game drawing a record-breaking 30,000 people!
Why is Suchao so popular?
First, it’s affordable. Tickets cost just 10 yuan ($1.40)—a huge difference from professional (专业的) matches, where seats can cost hundreds of dollars! During the latest round, some games sold out within hours, with fans paying 10 times the original price for tickets.
Second, it’s pure and passionate. For starters, it’s all about passion, not money. Unlike professional leagues, which focus on money and fame, Suchao brings soccer back to its roots. Players include both professional players and everyday people—teachers, shop owners, and students. They play for pride, not just paychecks.
Third, it’s a cultural celebration. The league also celebrates Jiangsu’s unique culture. Each city team represents local traditions, foods, and customs. Fans cheer for their hometowns with fun slogans like, “No cheating, no biased referees—just great rivalries!” “Match comes first, friendship fourteenth!”
Impact beyond soccer
Suchao isn’t just a sport—it’s boosting the economy! Hotels and tourist spots fill up during matches, and local businesses see more customers. One weekend alone, cultural spending hit over 1 million yuan ($139,000).
Most importantly, Suchao is for everyone. Young or old, skilled or just for fun—anyone can join. As one fan said, “It’s taking soccer back to the streets and schools where it belongs.”
A spark of hope
Suchao proves that soccer can be simple, exciting, and meaningful. It’s more than a trend—it’s a grassroots revolution with real economic, cultural, and emotional impact. Maybe, just maybe, it’s the fresh start China’s soccer needs.
1.What is the main purpose of Suchao according to the passage?
A.To train professional players. B.To take the place of school classes.
C.To let everyone enjoy soccer. D.To make money for the government.

(25-26九年级上·江苏南京·期中)When John was driving to work, someone suddenly cut him off in traffic. He screamed and yelled angrily at the driver. The driver, having a bad morning, shouted back in anger as well. All of us, sometimes, at least overreact to small things, but the reality is that it’s not worth it. Overreacting can lead to creating a bigger issue or accident. Stress in our lives can create the conditions for us to overreact. But even though doing so might let out one’s anger in the moment, it doesn’t solve the true source of the stress. All it does is to create more anxiety.
Listen, it’s totally okay to feel your emotions and want to express them sometimes, but real issues start to arise when we react much more than necessary. When you overreact, it might be a sign that there are other, deeper problems you aren’t dealing with, which are called emotional triggers (诱因). Everyone has emotional triggers and here are some common ones: events that repeat maddening experiences from one’s past, situations where one feels a sense of disrespect, and moments when one’s loved ones get harmed.
If we know what our triggers are, we can learn to be more in control of ourselves. Personally, I overreact whenever I work hard on something but someone is not pleased with it. I feel my ability is under attack and become defensive (防御的) right away. But then I see that my anger comes from always pushing myself to be perfect and being afraid of others’ bad words. Deep down, I feel tired and the sense of unfairness (不公平) is killing me. It may be hard for some to understand how the feeling of not being valued can drain those people who get energy from knowing their efforts are valued. Knowing this about myself, I become more aware of my reactions and try to respond to people more calmly when they offer criticism (批评), which turns out to draw me closer to others. Therefore, when you’re triggered, keep breathing deeply and cool down. Think about what just happened calmly by bringing yourself closer to truth and think about how other people might feel about things. Overreactions sometimes happen when we get over-focused on ourselves and our own emotions. Remember, no one gets a perfect life.
If you aren’t totally aware of what your triggers are, it might help to reflect on the past week and all the times when something makes you sad. Understand the things that bother you the most and take action.
So when you get annoyed over little things, take a moment to think calmly about what triggers you and try the above tips. By practicing, you can surely hold your temper when you are about to get mad next time. And one day you might find yourself among a closer circle.
1.Who probably shares the same emotional trigger as the writer?
A.Lily, who overreacted when she heard bad comments on her report.
B.Peter, who overreacted when his classmates joked about his parents.
C.Ann, who overreacted when she was invited to play the game she hated.
D.Mike, who overreacted when someone ran into him and refused to say “sorry”.
2.What does the word “drain” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Look forward. B.Lose heart. C.Improve oneself. D.Keep practising.
3.Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A.It’s necessary to overreact sometimes because it can make people feel calm.
B.It’s common for people who care more about those around them to overreact.
C.Avoiding criticism is helpful for people to keep calm and prevent overreaction.
D.Finding emotional triggers helps manage overreactions and improve relationships.
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Overreaction: A Guide to Perfect Emotional Control.
B.Overreaction: A Terrible Way to Deal with Criticism.
C.Overreaction: Knowing Triggers and Finding Calm.
D.Overreaction: Managing Anger and Preventing Stress.
(25-26九年级上·江苏南京·期中)Anger is a normal and healthy human emotion. But when it gets out of control, it can cause problems: problems at work, in your personal relationships and in your family life. Everybody gets angry sometimes. Although being angry is a common situation, learning how you deal with it is essential. It is difficult for kids and even for adults.
These ideas may calm you down and help you solve the problem which is troubling you. First, exercise can be useful for people who are trying to get their tempers under control because it’s a method of releasing energy and stress. For example, you will feel good to dance around your room with your favourite music! Second, get into the habit of saying how you’re feeling and why. If you’re having trouble with your temper, talk with your parents or friends and tell them what you are trying to do. Words help you show your feelings and receive understanding from others. Third, breathe deeply and repeat a calm word or phrase slowly, such as “relax” or “take it easy” to yourself while breathing. Besides, you’d better think of people and things you are thankful for because you can’t be angry and grateful at the same time.
Anger is never an excuse to give up your work or influence the people around you. Remember that life will always be filled with pain, frustration (挫折) and some other unexpected feelings. You can’t change that, but you can change your way to face the events that affect you. Learning to control your anger can help you stay away from being even unhappier.
1.What does the underlined word “essential” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Organized. B.Important. C.Interesting. D.Powerful.
2.Which of the following is NOT a suggested way to control anger?
A.Breathing deeply and repeating calm words.
B.Eating your favourite food to help feel better.
C.Talking with parents or friends about your feelings.
D.Thinking of people and things you are thankful for.
3.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Controlling anger helps avoid more unhappiness.
B.Unexpected feelings are the most difficult to control.
C.Anger can be a good excuse to give up work sometimes.
D.We had better avoid painful feelings and frustration in life.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Exercise is the best way to deal with anger problems.
B.Both children and adults have difficulty controlling anger.
C.Anger is a bad emotion that should be avoided completely.
D.Anger is a common feeling but learning to control it is important.

Berna: the servant (仆人)
Ahmet: a guest
Serkan: the host
Narrator: a person who tells a story
Narrator: One day, Nasrettin saw a goat making a mess in a kitchen. He helped the owner catch it and then hurried to a dinner. He arrived at the home of his rich friend in his worn-out coat. He was also dirty and smelling of goat.
Serkan: [quite surprised by his friend’s shabby (衣衫褴褛的) appearance] Nasrettin, come in. My servant will seat you.
Berna: [sniffing (嗅) the smelly coat] Follow me to the far end of the table, sir.
Ahmet: It is Nasrettin, at the end of the table. He keeps trying to start a conversation, but who wants to talk to such a shabby man?
Nasrettin: [saying to himself] Each of my friends wears his best coat, while I sit here, alone and hungry, in my worn-out coat—dirty and smelling of goat. I’d rather go home.
Narrator: So, Nasrettin left quickly on his grey donkey. At home, he bathed in hot water, washed himself clean, and dressed in a shining silk coat. Everyone nodded respectfully to Nasrettin as he headed back to his rich friend’s home.

Nasrettin: Yes, thank you [opens his coat to put in food]. Eat. Eat, coat!
Serkan: Old friend, tell me, why are you feeding your coat?

Rainbows are created by light shining through water or clear objects. In nature, rainbows usually appear where rain and sunlight meet. Rainbows are beautiful tricks of light. Science, though, has unlocked their mysteries.
Where and When Rainbows Appear
Notice the weather the next time you see a rainbow. There will be rain or mist (薄雾) in front of you, and the Sun will be shining from behind you. The rainbow will appear in the rain or mist. Water in the air and direct light are the two things needed to see a rainbow in nature. A rainbow won’t appear if the sky is too cloudy.
The best time to see a rainbow is usually in the morning or late afternoon. That’s when the Sun is in the best place to create one. If you’re lucky, you might see a double or even a triple rainbow.
You can sometimes see rainbows in the mist of a waterfall, too. A fountain (喷泉) can create a small rainbow, and a sprinkler (洒水器) on a sunny day may put on a colorful show. Rainbows can even form under a bright moon. These special rainbows are called moonbows.
To a viewer, a rainbow looks like a half circle. However, a rainbow actually forms a full circle. From the ground, most times we can only see a rainbow’s top half. Sometimes though, lucky airline pilots may see a rainbow’s complete circle from the sky.
How Rainbows Form
René Descartes was a French scientist. He was born over four hundred years ago. He was attracted by rainbows and wanted to learn more about them. He used sunlight and a big ball filled with water to do experiments. Descartes discovered that to see a rainbow, the viewer must be looking at the light from the right angle(角度). To understand rainbows, it helps to understand how light travels. Light moves at different speeds through different mediums (介质). Think of running on land. Then imagine running in knee-deep water. You move slower through water. In the same way, light moves faster through air than through water. This happens because water is thicker than air. When light enters water, it slows and changes its original path (路线). This process makes objects, such as a pencil sitting in a glass of water seem to bend(弯曲).
We can see rainbows in nature when direct light meets drops of rain. Sunlight refracts (折射) as it enters each drop. The light then reflects, or bounces, off the inside of each drop, like light off a mirror. The light refracts again as it exits the drop. Light refracts and reflects in millions of water droplets in the sky at the same time. This process makes all the colors of a rainbow.
1.Which sentence below can best explain the underlined sentence “Rainbows are beautiful tricks of light” in Paragraph 1?
A.Rainbows are tricks made by many scientists.

C.Rainbows are made by some unknown magic tricks
D.The light plays tricks on people’s eyes and makes rainbows.
2.In which of the following situations, a rainbow CAN’T form?
A.Over a sprinkler on a very cloudy day. B.On a misty morning.
C.Over a fountain under a bright moon. D.In the mist of a waterfall.
3.Which could be the best picture for the underlined sentence in Paragraph 6?
A. B.
C. D.
4.Which statement below is TRUE according to the article?
A.A rainbow can be a complete circle as well as a half circle.

(26-27九年级上·江苏南京·阶段检测)Climate change, including extreme heat and frequent heat waves, is already known to put pressure on us in many ways—threatening ecosystems, reducing food production, and harming public health. Now, new research points to a possibly lifelong setback (障碍) for children who are suffering from extreme heat.
In the first few years of life, children develop key physical, cognitive (认知的) and social skills that can shape (塑造) the rest of their lives. Meeting these basic developmental milestones (里程碑) at the early time—including recognizing letters (字母) or words and playing independently—can influence later life achievements, from mental health to economic success. “Delays in developing these skills set kids down a developmental path that can affect not just personal well-being, but society as a whole,” says Cuarta, a researcher at New York University.
To see if there are connections between extreme heat and the development of these skills, Cuarta and his team studied data from 19,600 children surveyed by UNICEF in six countries. The team used the Early Childhood Development Index, which follows milestones in four areas: reading and number-related skills (cognitive skills), social-emotional development (social skills), ways of learning (learning skills) and physical development (physical skills). The Index tested children’s ability to name letters, read simple words and recognize the numbers 1 through 10, among other skills. In Cuarta’s study, researchers found that compared to children living in areas with cooler conditions, children who experienced higher temperatures above 30℃ were less likely to meet basic developmental milestones, particularly for reading and number-related skills.
Learning loss may happen because heat’s effects on the brain can produce slower reaction times and an inability to focus. Heat can mess with (扰乱) children’s sleep, leading to cognitive disorder and learning difficulties in early childhood. With temperature rising globally, these delays could continue through school years and beyond, widening gaps in education and opportunity.
“There is an urgent need to find out the exact ways in which heat is affecting development,” suggests Cuarta. “Gaining a better understanding of who is being affected and how it affects them will allow us to develop adaptation strategies (适应策略) to help them in the future.”
1.How does the author present the pressure caused by climate change?
A.By quoting an expert. B.By raising a suggestion.
C.By giving examples. D.By making comparisons.
2.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The influence of painful childhood. B.The importance of early development.
C.The science behind the heat’s damage. D.The explanation of cognitive skills.
3.What can be inferred from Cuarta’s study?
A.Heat stress can promote kids’ sleep quality.
B.Heat’s effects were greater on mental health.
C.Temperature can determine kids’ personality.
D.Extreme heat may harm reading and number-related skills.
4.What is Cuarta’s suggestion about?
A.The addition of control groups. B.The inclusion of more volunteers.
C.Possible direction of future studies. D.Wide promotion of the findings.

(26-27九年级上·江苏南京·阶段检测)Recent reports show that more teens feel sad or hopeless compared with ten years ago.
In his new book How We Grow Up: Understanding Adolescence, journalist Matt Richtel explores the reasons behind teen stress and how adults can help.
One reason why teens feel more stressed is that they have still-developing brains and think too much about what’s happening around them. At the same time, they face a fast-changing world full of information—from school, friends, and online. This can lead to overthinking and worry. Many people blame (责备) phones as the main cause of their stress. Too much screen time can indeed be harmful. But it’s not the only reason. That’s why simply taking away teens' phones won't solve this situation. What’s more important is helping them to find a balance—getting enough sleep, staying active, and having face-to-face conversations.
The teenage years are a time of big change, and this change itself is another cause of stress.
During this time, young people start to move from depending on their parents to being independent (独立的). This change is natural and necessary for growing up, but it can also bring stress—teens may not know how to make choices by themselves or they may worry that they can't do things well. This worry makes them question what their parents and teachers have taught them. The process makes them feel quite stressed.
That is why help from parents is so important. Sometimes, teens may feel down even in loving homes because emotions (情绪) are hard to understand. Just like an adult might get stressed at work, teens can feel too stressed to deal with many small things together. Understanding this can help parents be supportive. In this way, parents can be good guides for their children.
In short, mental health challenges in teens come from a mix of still-developing brains, the world around them, and the stress of growing up in a fast-changing world. To help with these problems, we shouldn’t just blame phones or be too strict with them. Instead, what matters is listening carefully, staying close to them, and guiding them with care and understanding.
1.What is more important for teens according to Paragraph 2?
A.Becoming more independent. B.Finding a healthy life balance.
C.Staying away from their phones. D.Dealing with emotional challenges.
2.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.What else brings teens stress and worries.
B.Why teens become independent of parents.
C.How teens deal with stress from their parents.
D.Why teens question what they've been taught.
3.It is better to put “Open talks and patience can build trust.” in ____.
A.1 B.2 C.3 D.4
4.How is the passage organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, ③=Paragraph 3, ④=Paragraph 4, ⑤=Paragraph 5)
A.① →②③④ →⑤ B.①→② ③→④⑤ C.①→②③ →④⑤ D.①→② ③④→⑤
(25-26九年级上·江苏南京·阶段检测)Imagine you are in an autonomous vehicle (AV) and face this terrible choice: The car must either turn left and hit a young girl, or turn right and hit many pedestrians (行人). On top of this “moral dilemma (道德困境)”, if the car doesn’t turn, you might get hurt. What decision would you expect the AV to make?
In life-and-death situations, should AVs put passengers first or pedestrians? Should AVs prioritize (优先考虑) the greater good or one person’s safety? These have been a central topic for several years. However, there can be no completely perfect solution.
“A moral dilemma is a dilemma; it has no clear solution by design,” wrote Derek Leben, a professor of ethics (伦理学) at the Tepper School of Business, US, in his paper.
When studying these questions of AVs, Iyad Rahwan, an MIT scientist, found that people are selfish. “People buying these cars, they want cars that prioritize the passenger,” Rahwan told Science News. “But they want other people’s cars to protect pedestrians (行人) instead.”
AVs bring not only moral dilemmas but also other challenges. When there is an accident, who should be responsible for it, the company of the AV, or the “driver”?
In July, a self-driving taxi by Baidu hit a pedestrian in Wuhan, Hubei, who ran a red light. Baidu worked with the police and took the pedestrian to the hospital. In another accident in April in Seattle, US, the responsibility fell on the “driver” since the “driver” was on his phone while in the full self-driving (supervised) mode.
The situations of different accidents caused by AVs are so complicated (复杂的) that “now there are no clear rules”, Ji Xuehong, a researcher from North China University of Technology, told National Business Daily. “And the rules for different levels from L2 to L4 are also different,” Ji added.
1.How does the author introduce the topic of moral dilemmas faced by AVs?
A.By introducing the rules for self-driving cars. B.By explaining what moral dilemmas mean.
C.By giving an example of a hard decision. D.By introducing how self-driving cars work.
2.What does Derek Leben think about the moral dilemma?
A.It can be dealt with easily. B.There is no perfect solution.
C.It can be avoided by design. D.It won’t happen in real life.
3.According to Iyad Rahwan’s research, what kind of AVs do people want for themselves?
A.One that can make moral decisions. B.One that puts pedestrians’ safety first.
C.One that protects everyone equally. D.One that keeps its passengers safest.
4.What does Ji Xuehong express about AVs in the last paragraph?
A.It’s hard to control self-driving cars. B.It’s hard to make rules for AVs.
C.AVs can cause a lot of trouble. D.The rules for AVs will come out.
(25-26九年级上·江苏南京·阶段检测)Once upon a time, the colours of the world started to quarrel. All said that they were the best, the most important, the most useful and the most popular.
Green said, “Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and hope. I was chosen for grass and trees. Without me, all animals would die.”
Blue interrupted, “You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. Without my peace, you would all be nothing.”
Yellow laughed, “I bring laughter and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, and the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me, there would be no fun.”
Orange started next, “I am the colour of health and strength. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges and mangoes.”
Red couldn’t stand it any longer. He shouted out, “I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood — life’s blood! I am the colour of danger and bravery. I bring fire into the blood.”
Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, “Think of me. I am the colour of silence. You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial (肤浅的).”
And so the colours went on quarrelling. Their quarrelling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a flash of bright lightning and thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down heavily. The colours crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another.
Rain began to say, “You foolish colours, don’t you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me.”
Doing as they were told, the colours united and joined hands. The rain continued, “From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch (延伸) across the sky in a great bow of colour as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow.” And so, whenever a good rain washes the world, and a rainbow appears in the sky, let us remember to appreciate one another.

Lily didn’t embarrass Tom publicly. Instead, she told Mr. Wilde what she found, and the teacher handled the situation privately. The mystery was solved not by magic, but by careful 1 and logical thinking—the true tools of any detective.

“You and Sydney need to clean your rooms 2 . I’m excited to get some fresh air in the house. It’s time for a good spring cleaning!” Mom answered.

We played in the yard for hours. Then, a wonderful 9 filled the air. “The pie!” Sydney said. We ran inside to see if it was ready.
But when we looked at the pie cooling by the window, we were shocked. It was broken into pieces! “We must 10 what happened before Mom sees it,” I whispered to Sydney. We looked at each other and knew we had to find out the truth.

四、阅读理解

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.C

Characters
Nasrettin: a wise man
Berna: the servant (仆人)

(24-25九年级上·江苏南京·期中)
B.Someone lied to us about the truth of rainbows.
B.You need to stand at a right angle to see a rainbow.
C.Light can actually make a pencil bend in water.
D.Light moves faster in thicker mediums like water.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.D 4.B
根据“A fountain ( 喷泉) can create a small rainbow, and a sprinkler (洒水器) on a sunny day may put on a colorful show.”及“A rainbow won’t appear if the sky is too cloudy.”可知,洒水器在晴朗的天气时可以形成彩虹,在多云的天气时不能形成彩虹。故选A。
3.细节理解题。根据“When light enters water, it slows and changes its original path. This process makes objects, such as a pencil sitting in a glass of water seem to bend.”
根据“Descartes discovered that to see a rainbow, the viewer must be looking at the light from the right angle”可知,观看者要在正确的角度看彩虹。选项A“您需要站在正确的角度才能看到彩虹。”表述符合。故选B。

2.第三段Derek Leben的原话:“A moral dilemma is a dilemma; it has no clear solution by design”,直接表明他认为道德困境没有明确的解决方案,因此选B。
3.第四段提到Iyad Rahwan的研究发现“People buying these cars, they want cars that prioritize the passenger”,说明人们希望自己的车优先保护乘客安全,因此选D。
4.最后一段Ji Xuehong指出AV引发的事故情况复杂,“now there are no clear rules”,且不同级别的AV规则也不同,表达的是“很难为AV制定规则”,因此选B。
