Peer Counselors: Warm Helpers for Teenagers
Now more and more middle schools set up peer counseling groups for Grade 9 students. Peer counselors are ordinary students who receive special training to listen to classmates’ troubles and offer useful advice. Unlike teachers, they stand at the same age stage, so they can fully understand the pressure and confusion that teenagers face every day.
The training for peer counselors lasts for four weeks. Teachers teach them how to listen patiently, how to ask proper guiding questions, and how to keep all classmates’ personal secrets strictly. The most important rule for every counselor is never to spread others’ private stories to any third person. If they break this rule, they will lose the qualification to work in the group.
Students can visit peer counselors during noon break or after school. The problems they talk about cover different sides of teenage life: conflicts with parents, difficulties in making friends, stress from schoolwork, and worries about self-image. Peer counselors cannot solve all big problems, but they can create a safe space for troubled students to pour out their feelings. Many students say after talking, their heavy hearts become much lighter.
A peer counselor called Tom shared his working experience. Last month, a classmate came to him, upset because his parents disagreed with his dream of learning photography. Tom did not give direct advice at once. Instead, he asked the boy to list all the advantages of photography and how he planned to balance study and hobbies. Later, the boy wrote a detailed plan and had a peaceful talk with his parents, and they finally reached an agreement.
Experts say peer counseling brings two-way benefits. For students with troubles, they get emotional comfort and practical suggestions. For counselors themselves, they learn to care for others, improve communication skills and become more responsible people. It is a valuable growing experience for both sides.
However, peer counselors have clear limits. If students meet serious problems such as long-term depression or family conflicts that cannot be solved, counselors must guide them to turn to professional school teachers or psychological experts for further help.
Answer the following questions according to the passage.
Task 1:
1.Who are peer counselors in schools?
2.How long does the training for peer counselors last?
3.What is the most important rule for peer counselors?
4.Why did Tom’s classmate feel upset when he went to Tom?
5.What two kinds of benefits does peer counseling bring?
Task 2:
6.What will you do if you are the counselor when students face serious mental troubles? (No more than 30 words)

What Makes a Job Worthwhile?
When students talk about dream jobs, most of them mention famous or high-income jobs like doctors, designers or photographers. Few students think about ordinary jobs that carry cultural value. However, every job that brings good influence to society is worthwhile, especially jobs with traditional craftsmanship.
Book restoration is one such worthwhile job. Its main duty is repairing ancient paper works damaged by damp, insects or fire. Workers need two basic qualities: professional repair skills and endless patience. Sometimes repairing one page takes a whole workday, and workers cannot make any mistakes.
Another valuable job is being a traditional wood craftsman. These workers repair old wooden furniture and create new wooden artworks. They learn skills from elder masters and pass the skills down to younger people. Their work keeps thousands of old wooden cultural treasures alive. Unlike factory machines that make the same products quickly, craftsmen create unique works with hand skills. Every piece of wooden art has its own special shape and story.
Many young people refuse to take these jobs for two reasons. First, traditional craft jobs usually bring lower pay than office jobs. Second, the training period is long and boring. You need to spend 5 to 10 years learning basic skills before you can work independently.
Even so, more cultural workers are calling on teenagers to take up traditional craft jobs. These jobs protect our national culture. If no young people learn these skills, many old crafts will disappear forever. The government also offers free training courses for traditional handcraft skills to encourage more young learners.
If you want to choose a worthwhile job, do not only think about money. Ask yourself two questions: Can this job bring value to society? Do I have real passion for this work? If both answers are yes, this job is worth your time and effort.
Task 1:
1.What kind of jobs are worthwhile according to the passage?
2.What are the two basic qualities for book restorers?
3.What is the difference between hand-made wooden works and machine-made ones?
4.How long do people need to learn basic wood craft skills to work alone?
5.What does the government do to encourage young people to learn traditional crafts?
Task 2:
6.Please write one sentence to explain your idea of a worthwhile job (No More Than 30 Words).

You never know what to expect on your trip. As the writer waited for her plane to Dakar, a woman asked if she could use her mobile phone. While the writer was hesitating, a similarly dressed traveller presented her phone to the woman without a second thought. This was the writer’s introduction to Teranga, the Senegalese way of life.
During the summer, the writer spent time volunteering in Dakar. Teranga helped her learn about and enjoy Senegalese culture. She accepted an invitation to stay with a local family, and people were willing to share whatever they had with strangers.
Teranga is especially visible in Senegal’s food culture. Senegalese families cook in a manner that expects the arrival of guests. To prepare to greet even unplanned visitors with Teranga, there’s often an extra plate ready. And for guests who do show up at mealtime, they will always get the best part of the dish. The local people truly believe that the more you give, the more you receive.
Teranga builds a culture where there is no “other” and keeps neighbourhood life harmonious. It’s no wonder visitors to the country can’t wait to go back.
Task 1: Answer the questions.
1.Where was the writer’s plane going? (不超过6词)
2.What happened while the writer was hesitating? (不超过12词)
3.How did the writer experience Teranga during the summer? (不超过10词)
4.What is Teranga especially visible in? (不超过4词)
5.Why is there often an extra plate ready? (不超过8词)
6.What do the local people believe? (不超过8词)

After school, Vishal Singh faces a difficult choice. He knows he should really get on with his homework, but the Internet is just so tempting (诱人的).
All too often, the 17-year-old student from Woodside High School in California favors Facebook, YouTube and making digital videos. He often chooses time on his computer over his studies.
“Students have always faced distractions and time-wasters,” writes Matt Richtel in the New York Times. He says that computers and cell phones, and the stimulation (刺激) they offer, are a real challenge for young people, who need to focus on learning.
Students say that their parents, worried about the distractions, try to police computer time. But monitoring the use of cell phones is difficult.
Teachers at Woodside commonly blame technology for students’ struggles to concentrate, but they are divided over whether computers and the Internet are the solution.
In Richtel’s article, English teacher Marcia Blondel shares her frustration with her students and her inability to get them to read 30 pages of a book for homework. To address this shortcoming, she takes part in a read-aloud of the book in class.
“You can’t become a good writer by watching YouTube, texting and e-mailing a bunch of abbreviations.” she says.
But even as some parents and educators express their worries over students’ digital diets, they are making efforts to use technology in the classroom, seeing it as a way to engage these 21st-century students.
The principal of Woodside High School, David Reilly, asked teachers to build websites to communicate with students, spent a large amount of money setting up a multimedia center and introduced new courses like the digital audio recording class. He also pushed first period back an hour, to 9 a.m., because students were showing up bleary-eyed (睡眼惺忪的), at least in part because they were up late on their computers.
“I am trying to take back their attention from their cell phones and video games,” he says. “To a degree, I’m using technology to do it.”
Some US schools are looking to use the Internet to encourage students to study.
Task 1:
1.Where does Vishal Singh study?
2.Vishal Singh doesn’t spend more time on his studies than on his computer, does he?
3.Why do parents try to police computer time of their kids?
4.What does the English teacher Marcia Blondel share in Richtel’s article?
5.According to the passage, how many measures (措施) did the principal of Woodside High School take to stop students from focusing too much on computers and video games?
Task 2:
6.How do you like the measures taken by the principal? Why do you think so? (No More Than 30 Words).

Learn from Ancient Travellers’ Spirits
Three world-famous ancient travellers left valuable travel works for later generations: Xu Xiake from China, Marco Polo from Venice and Ibn Battūtah from Morocco. Their travel journals are not only records of scenery, but also precious cultural treasures teaching modern teenagers how to explore the world with patience and careful observation.
Xu Xiake travelled widely all over China for decades. He walked through mountains, rivers and villages, and wrote detailed notes about geography, plants and local customs every single day. No matter what bad weather or difficult roads, he never stopped recording what he saw. His work The Travel Diaries of Xu Xiake helps modern people study ancient Chinese geography and folk culture. Unlike many travellers in his time who only visited famous scenic spots, Xu Xiake preferred small unknown villages to find unique local stories.
Marco Polo travelled to China during Kublai Khan’s rule and served the emperor for many years. After he returned to Venice, he was caught in a war and put into prison. With a writer’s help, he finished The Travels of Marco Polo. This book introduced China’s rich culture and great inventions to European readers, building a cultural bridge between the East and the West. His stories encouraged lots of Western people to travel to Asia to learn new culture.
Ibn Battūtah spent nearly thirty years travelling around forty countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. After he finished all his journeys, he told all his travel experiences to a scholar, who wrote them down into the book Rihlah. His writing focuses on different community cultures and local people’s friendly spirits, especially the warm hospitality of strangers in every country he visited.
History teachers ask students to learn from these three travellers for two main reasons. First, they never gave up travelling and recording even when they met hard difficulties. Second, they respected every local culture they met and were willing to communicate with ordinary villagers instead of only visiting famous buildings. Teachers advise students to keep travel journals and design travel brochures after trips, just like these ancient travellers did hundreds of years ago. These activities help teenagers observe life carefully and form a respectful attitude towards different cultures.
Task 1:
1.How many famous ancient travellers are mentioned in the passage?
2.What book did Xu Xiake’s travel notes become later?
3.Why was Marco Polo put into prison after returning to Venice?
4.What does Ibn Battūtah’s book mainly talk about?
5.What two spirits can students learn from ancient travellers according to teachers?
Task 2:
6.Give two practical ways for students to learn from ancient travellers. (No more than 30 words)

Rural Cultural Jobs That Are Worth Our Respect
When teenagers discuss ideal jobs, most of them talk about city-based jobs such as designers, doctors or online bloggers. Only a small number of students pay attention to rural cultural jobs which keep our local folk culture alive. In fact, any job that protects village folk culture and helps countryside develop is worthwhile, especially jobs carrying traditional craftsmanship spirit.
A village folk architect is one typical valuable rural cultural job. Its main daily work is repairing broken ancient village houses and redesigning old folk buildings without destroying their original cultural features. Workers need two core qualities: professional wooden construction skills and rich local folk culture knowledge. Sometimes repairing one ancient wooden beam takes three full workdays, and workers cannot make any careless mistakes.
Another irreplaceable rural job is rural science journalist. These workers visit farms and villages regularly, record traditional eco-farming skills and write easy articles for local farmers. Their written reports are totally different from general online agriculture videos. Online videos offer universal farming knowledge, while journalists’ articles are specially written to fit local village soil and climate conditions.
Many young people refuse to take rural cultural jobs for two main reasons. First, rural jobs usually have lower salaries than city office positions. Second, the skill training cycle is long and boring. New learners need to spend 6 to 10 years learning basic folk craft skills before they can work independently in villages.
Even with these difficulties, cultural experts encourage teenagers to take rural cultural jobs. These jobs protect disappearing village folk heritage. If no young people take over these jobs, thousands of traditional rural skills will vanish in the next twenty years. Local government provides free long-term folk craft training classes and village internship chances to attract young learners.
If you want to choose a truly valuable career, do not only focus on salary and city living conditions. Ask yourself two simple questions: Can this job protect our local folk culture? Do I have real love for rural life and culture? If both answers are yes, this job deserves your lifelong efforts.
Task 1:
1.What kinds of jobs are worthwhile according to the passage?
2.What two core qualities do village folk architects need?
3.What is the difference between journalists’ farming articles and online farming videos?
4.How many years do learners need to master basic rural craft skills to work on their own?
5.What help does local government offer to attract young rural craft learners?
Task 1:
6.Write one sentence about your idea of valuable rural jobs (no more than 30 words).

Travel Brochure: Ancient Water Town Xixi
If you want to enjoy slow traditional travel within one hour from the city centre, Xixi Ancient Water Town is your perfect choice. This town has over one thousand years of history and keeps original water town style without too many modern buildings. Unlike noisy commercial tourist spots, Xixi keeps its quiet slow lifestyle of local villagers.
The whole town is crossed by clear water channels. Small wooden boats carry visitors across rivers, and old stone bridges connect different streets. Local villagers still live in black-tile wooden houses beside water. Every early morning, you can see elders wash vegetables by the river and small shops sell homemade rice cakes. No loud loudspeakers or crowded street performances break the peaceful atmosphere here.
Xixi is famous for two special local treasures: bamboo handcrafts and river food. Local craft masters make bamboo baskets, bamboo fans and small bamboo toys with thin bamboo strips. Visitors can watch the whole making process and even try simple weaving skills under masters’ guidance. For food lovers, the river shrimp soup and sweet rice cakes are must-taste dishes. All food uses fresh natural materials from local rivers and farmlands.
Another special feature of Xixi is “blank space travel”. Most tourist towns fill every street with shops and entertainment projects, but Xixi leaves large quiet natural areas with wild grass and old trees. Tourists can walk along empty riverside paths, sit on stone benches and enjoy quiet time alone. Travel writers say this empty quiet space gives visitors enough room to relax and imagine, which is the biggest charm of Xixi.
Many students choose Xixi for school autumn trips every year. Teachers think this trip helps teenagers stay away from busy city life and learn traditional local culture. Visitors cannot buy expensive luxury goods here, but they can get valuable spiritual peace that modern shopping malls cannot offer. If you plan a one-day slow trip with your classmates or family, Xixi Ancient Water Town is well worth your visit.

Philip is 55 and blind. He has been blind since birth. He says he does not feel like he is missing anything, because he cannot imagine what sight is like. He can smell a rose, but he cannot tell if it is red, or blue. It does not matter to him; he enjoys the beauty of the scent (pleasant smell) itself.
People sometimes take pity on him, but he never complains; he does not feel cheated by Mother Nature. But his life is not always a bed of roses. It is difficult for him to travel.
He cannot drive, of course; he travels by bus. At home, he cannot just look out of the window to see what the weather is like, and then dress appropriately. He can’t look at the clock on the wall to see what time it is. He uses his Braille watch or a special radio for that.
Philip can look for and look at, but he cannot see. He says strangers often when talking to him. They’ll say, “I see,” meaning “I understand.” But then they think they’ve been rude, so they’ll say, “I mean, I understand.”
Philip has never seen a good movie or a bad TV show. He doesn’t know what a sunset or a full moon looks like. He is a musician. He plays the saxophone, but not in a band. Four times a week, he travels to Old Town in Pasadena on the bus in the afternoon.
He gets off at the bus stop and then finds his way across the street to The Cap, a hat store.
On the side walk in front of The Cap is his “spot.” There, he puts a hat, upside down with change in it. He sits down and starts playing his saxophone. He usually spends about four hours there and earns from $10 to $30.Task 1: Answer the questions.
1.Philip has been blind since birth, hasn’t he?
2.How does Philip know the time at home?

Sixteen-year-old Ethan Zhang is a member of his school table tennis team. He is not the strongest player, but he is known for his quick response.
This year, the school brought in a new coach, Mr Lin. He was very strict and focused only on winning. From the first week, he changed the training style. Players had to repeat the same practice for hours, and mistakes were not allowed.
Ethan slowly started to feel stressed. Some players began to complain, but the coach said, “If you cannot deal with pressure, you cannot play in real matches.”
One day, before an important match, Ethan made a small mistake during practice. The coach did not shout, but simply wrote his name on a list of “players who may not play in this game.”
Ethan felt upset. He had never missed an official match before, but now he might not even get a chance to play.
That evening, Ethan stayed alone in the gym and continued practising. He noticed something: the coach had placed a small note on the table saying, “________.”
Ethan thought carefully and stopped trying to play faster. Instead, he adjusted his breathing and slowed down his movements.
The next day, during the match, Ethan did not play in a strong way. Instead, he stayed calm and made fewer mistakes than before. His team did not win easily, but they made fewer mistakes than before. After the match, the coach looked at Ethan and said, “You learned the most important skill.”

Is it better to read before bed?
Need to know● Teenagers need about nine to ten hours of sleep each night. But according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control, they only get about six on average.
● Research has shown that readers who spend time with a book before bed have better sleep.
● In the UK, 86% of parents wish their children would spend less time in front of the screen, and 83% think it is important for their children to read for fun.
There is a little argument between Sally and her parents. Every evening, her parents hope she will go to sleep after finishing her homework so she can get enough sleep. Though reading is beneficial, they believe sleep is more important for her health and helps her do well in school. However, even when Sally has already finished her homework, she likes to put off bedtime to do some reading. As for her, reading at night helps her relax and makes her feel calm before bed. But sometimes, she gets so lost in her book and ends up feeling tired the next day.
Sally’s problem has raised a question —— Should we read just before bed?
Yes-It’s very beneficial.Reading a book at night is definitely better than watching TV or your phone. The light from those devices can affect your natural clock. Reading, on the other hand, has been proven to improve sleep by slowing down your heart rate and relaxing your body. It’s a great feeling to fall asleep reading after a long day of school, sports and other activities. And reading before bed is also great for your mental (心理的) health because it calms your mind. That’s especially helpful for people who have trouble falling or staying asleep.
Ben
No-It’s very tiring. Not every book is good to read at night. Reading before bed can make it hard to fall asleep because it keeps your mind busy. If the book is very exciting, it might stop you from relaxing and getting ready for sleep. Also, reading at night takes time. You might stay up later than planned, reducing the amount of sleep you get. What’s more, if you read when you’re sleepy, you might . It’s as if the book never reached you.
Amy
Task 1: Answer the questions.
1.How many hours of sleep do teenagers have on average according to the study?
2.What’s the argument between Sally and her parents?
3.What does the underlined sentence “she gets so lost in her book” mean?
4.Whose opinion fits Sally’s present condition better?
5.What might happen to you? Fill in the blank with no more than 5 words.
Task 2:
6.Based on Sally’s problem, make a suggestion for her and tell the reason in about 30 words.

Conquering the “I’ll Do It Tomorrow” monster
Good morning, everyone. Let’s be honest—how many of you have ever told yourselves, “I’ll start this tomorrow,” only to find yourselves stressed and rushing the night before it’s due? Yeah, me too. For the longest time, I was the master of procrastination (拖延). “One more video” was my motto, and my to do lists were forever unfinished.
My breaking point came in 10th grade. I had a major history presentation. I had weeks to prepare for it. My plan was beautiful... in my head. In reality, I spent those weeks doing everything but the work. The night before, I was a disaster—cramming, crying, and trying to stay awake. The result was disappointing, and I was exhausted. I knew I needed a real change.
My turnaround started with one simple rule: just start. I began with the 5-minute trick: tell yourself you’ll only work on something for five minutes. Starting was often the hardest part, and once I began, I kept going.
To make my progress easy to be seen, I began using a simple weekly planner. I broke tasks into tiny, specific steps for each day. Instead of writing “work on essay”, my planner now said: “Write the introduction paragraph (3:00-3:30 PM).” I used a simple red marker to physically cross off each tiny task. Each checkmark in the planner became a small win, and seeing a week planned out took my anxiety away.
I also had to deal with perfectionism. I learned that done is better than perfect. Waiting for the ideal moment or idea was just another form of delay. And when I did fall back, I learned to reset without guilt and take the next small step.
This wasn’t about becoming a productivity machine. It was about trading last-minute panic for peace of mind. The time will pass either way. Why not spend it feeling in control instead of chasing deadlines?
Start small. Try five minutes. Break one task down. You might just find that tomorrow doesn’t have to be so scary.
Task 1: Answer the questions.
1.Did the writer realize she needed a real change after her disappointing history presentation in 10th grade?
2.What is the “5-minute trick” according to the writer?
3.Which is more likely to be seen in the writer’s weekly planner, “Review for the English test” or “Recite Chapter 5 word bank (4:00-4:40 PM)”?
4.What does the writer mean by saying “done is better than perfect”?
5.According to the passage, what did the writer do when she fell back into her old habits?
Task 2:
6.What does “growth” truly mean according to the writer’s experience? Please give an example from your own life. Write a short paragraph in about 30 words.

The narrow old bookstore had stood on the corner for forty years. Lisa passed it every day on her way home from school, yet she never stepped inside. She preferred e-books, believing physical books took up too much space and lacked (缺乏) convenience. One rainy afternoon, dark clouds rolled in suddenly and heavy rain poured down without warning, forcing her to run into the small shop.
The shop was filled with the smell of aged paper. Tall wooden bookshelves reached toward the ceiling (天花板), packed tightly with books from different periods. Light came in softly through the windows, creating a peaceful atmosphere. An elderly man ran the store alone. Instead of greeting her warmly, he just nodded and returned to sorting piles of books. Lisa wandered casually, not planning to buy anything. She pulled a worn travel journal (日志) from the shelf, whose former owner had filled the pages with notes, small sketches (草图) and personal feelings about journeys across the country.
Curious, Lisa started a short conversation with the owner. He told her that many second-hand books carried hidden stories left by previous readers. He refused several high offers from property developers (地产开发商) who hoped to turn the site into a popular coffee shop. To Lisa’s surprise, he did not earn much money from the business. When she asked why he kept operating the store, he said he viewed it as a bridge connecting different strangers across time.
Lisa left the bookstore with that travel journal. In the following weeks, she often returned to the shop after school. Gradually, she realized e-books offered quick reading, but second-hand printed books held unique warmth. Months later, she began bringing her own used books to share with other readers visiting the shop. She came to understand that value did not just lie in information itself, but in the human connections carried together with it.Task 1:
1.Did Lisa like physical books at the beginning of the story?
2.What made Lisa run into the small bookstore that afternoon?
3.What did Lisa find inside the worn travel journal she pulled from the shelf?
4.Why did the elderly owner keep running the bookstore even though he did not earn much money?
5.How did Lisa’s attitude towards second-hand printed books change after she visited the store for several weeks?
Task 2:
6.The elderly owner loves his bookstore, but he does not earn much money from it. If you were his friend, what two pieces of advice would you give him to help the bookstore survive while keeping its special warmth?

A group of scientists discovered a gas called phosphine (磷化氢) on Venus (金星). That means there may be living things on the planet, which made many people start to imagine the talk between aliens and humans. A reporter from the Washington Post wrote a letter to people of Earth on behalf of the citizens on Venus.
Attention, People of Earth
Fine. The big secret is out. Many of your finest scientists have discovered there is life tens of millions of miles away-here, on the beautiful planet of Venus. Congratulations! However, we have a polite request: Please stay away.
We’re serious. No spacecrafts to Venus, no tasks, no visits. If we wake up one morning and see so many of you people wandering around in spacesuits, we’re going to be really upset.
We don’t want to be impolite. It’s just that we’re shocked by what you’ve got going on down there.
Earth looks like a mess. You’ve got health problems, environmental pollution, traffic jams, political fights, etc. No wonder so many of you want to leave Earth for another planet.
We know you’d like it here. That’s what frightens us. You’d all move to Venus at once. If we start having you all up here, pretty soon, the Martians (火星人) and Jupiterians (木星人) are going to come, too. But we can’t handle so much.
Venus is not Earth 2. We suggest ___________________________ because ___________________________.
God bless you!
Sincerely,
Venusians

Rudyard Kipling was born in Mumbai, India, on 30th December 1865. He enjoyed his early life in India very much. However, when he was five years old, he was sent to England for school. There, he lived with a family in Portsmouth. Later, his mother found out that Mrs Holloway, the woman who looked after him, was treating him badly. So she moved him to a boarding school in Devon.
Life at the new school was not easy either. Kipling was bullied and had to live under very strict rules. However, he also made some close friends and enjoyed jokes and fun moments with them. He later used some of these school experiences in Stalky & Co. (1899), a novel about teenage boys at a British boarding school.
During his school years, Kipling’s headmaster helped him get into writing. He encouraged Kipling to edit the school paper and praised the poems he wrote for it. When Kipling sent some of his poems home, his father had them printed privately as Schoolboy Lyrics in 1881. These were Kipling’s first published works.
In 1882, Kipling returned to India and began working as a journalist for a newspaper. There, his writing really began to develop. He wrote many short stories, and many of them were published in the newspaper. In 1888, he wrote another collection of verse, or poetry.
His memories of India, school life, loneliness and friendship gave him material for his writing. Later, he wrote famous works such as The Jungle Book and The Just So Stories. In 1907, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Kipling’s life shows that 5 can shape a writer’s mind and become part of powerful stories.

Feng Zikai: Father of Chinese Cartoons
Have you ever looked at a simple drawing and felt something deep inside? That’s the magic that Feng Zikai, the father of Chinese cartoons, could create. His works show the joys and sorrows of life, full of kindness and care.
Feng was born in 1898 in Zhejiang Province. He grew up in a rich family, but he didn’t enjoy the traditional studies his father valued. Instead, he loved art from a young age. He even borrowed dyes (染料) from the family shop to color pictures in his father’s books. After his father passed away, Feng became known as the “Little Artist” in his town. At school, a teacher named Li Shutong encouraged him to follow his passion. Li taught Feng to draw from real life, not just to trace (临摹) pictures. He also said that a good artist needs both skill and good character — an idea deeply influencing Feng Zikai’s art.
After graduation (毕业), Feng worked as an art teacher in Shanghai, but he wanted more training. In 1921, he went to Tokyo to study Japanese and European art. Inspired by the Japanese artist Takehisa Yumeji, he returned home with fresh ideas for his ink paintings. Back in China, he joined a group of writers and artists. His drawings soon appeared in popular magazines, making art accessible (容易理解的) to everyone. These works became known as manhua, a type of Chinese cartoon. Feng also designed book covers, illustrated books, and edited magazines, sharing his ideas about kindness and caring for people.
Feng had a kind heart. He loved all living things, especially children. He believed that “the most precious thing in the world is a person,” and that children are full of life and spirit. He said teaching children was simple: “Just let them stay a child, and never let them lose their childlike heart.” Through his art and caring ideas, Feng Zikai still inspires people today.
Task 1 Answer the questions.

一、Read the passage and complete the tasks (根据短文内容完成任务)。
Task 1:

Answer the following questions according to the passage.
1.What kind of jobs are worthwhile according to the passage?
2.What are the two basic qualities for book restorers?
3.What is the difference between hand-made wooden works and machine-made ones?

三、Read the passage and complete the tasks (根据短文内容完成任务)。

四、Read the passage and complete the tasks (根据短文内容完成任务)。
1.Where does Vishal Singh study?
2.Vishal Singh doesn’t spend more time on his studies than on his computer, does he?
3.Why do parents try to police computer time of their kids?

一、Read the passage and complete the tasks (根据短文内容完成任务)。
Answer the following questions according to the passage.
1.What kinds of jobs are worthwhile according to the passage?
2.What two core qualities do village folk architects need?

三、Read the passage and complete the tasks (根据短文内容完成任务)。

能力综合实践5篇
一、Read the passage and complete the tasks (根据短文内容完成任务)。
【答案】1.Yes, she did. 2.Tell yourself you’ll only work on something for five minutes. 3.Recite Chapter 5 word bank (4:00-4:40 PM). 4.We don’t need to wait for the perfect moment to start; finishing the task is more important than making it perfect. 5.She learned to reset without guilt and take the next small step. 6.Growth means fighting our bad habits. I used to put off homework. With the 5-minute trick, I took small steps and finally beat procrastination.
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍作者结合自身经历分享战胜拖延的办法与感悟。
【详解】

4.根据第五段中“I learned that done is better than perfect. Waiting for the ideal moment or idea was just another form of delay.”可知,不要等待完美时机才开始行动,把任务完成比追求做到完美更加重要,由此可以解读这句话的内涵,依据原文,适当提取整合。
5.根据第五段中“And when I did fall back, I learned to reset without guilt and take the next small step.”
Read the passage and complete the tasks (根据短文内容完成任务)。
【答案】1.No, she didn’t. 2.The heavy rain. 3.Notes, small sketches and personal feelings about journeys across the country. 4.Because he viewed it as a bridge connecting different strangers across time. 5.She found second-hand printed books held unique warmth. 6.① Hold book-sharing activities for readers. ② Sell small handmade bookmarks instead of changing the shop.
1.根据原文第一段“She preferred e-books, believing physical books took up too much space and lacked convenience”,能直接看出故事开头Lisa并不喜欢实体书,因此答案“No, she didn’t”是对原文细节信息的直接提取。

3.原文第二段直接说明了这本旧旅行日志的内容“She pulled a worn travel journal from the shelf, whose former owner had filled the pages with notes, small sketches and personal feelings about journeys across the country”,答案完全照搬原文里的细节信息,没有遗漏任何要点。
4.原文第三段店主直接给出了坚持经营的理由“he said he viewed it as a bridge connecting different strangers across time”,答案直接引述了店主的原话,完全贴合原文的核心表意。
Read the passage and complete the tasks (根据短文内容完成任务)。
Sincerely,
Venusians

四、Read the passage and complete the tasks (根据短文内容完成任务)。
