Dear Julie,
I hope this letter finds you well. I know you’ve been feeling sad lately because you’re having trouble making true friends and even had a fight with Matt last week. Don’t worry, I’m here to share some ideas with you.
First, let’s talk about how to find real friends. True friends always care about each other. When you meet someone new, don’t be too shy to talk. Try to find out what you have in common, like hobbies or favorite novels. For example, if you both love reading Mark Twain’s novels, you can talk about the characters in the books. A good friend should be honest and hard-working, not lazy. They will listen to you and help you solve problems, not just talk loud without thinking.
Now, about fixing your friendship with Matt. You two used to be so close, right? The fight happened by accident, so don’t be afraid to say sorry first. You can attend the school music show with him this weekend—you both like playing the flute, remember? When you talk to him, be direct but kind. Don’t focus on the difference between you two; instead, think about your similarity and the happy times you shared. Thanks to your long friendship, I believe he will forgive you soon.
Congratulations on being brave enough to face these problems! Everyone makes mistakes, so don’t be too serious about it. If you have spare time, call me. I’d be happy to go to the library with you—sharing a book is always a pleasure.
Yours sincerely,
Diana

(25-26八年级上·广东湛江·期中)Have you ever seen a long line of ants and wondered how they work together so well? The secret is how they “talk” to each other. Ants don’t use words. They have their own special ways to communicate.
The most important way is through smells. When a worker ant finds some food, it walks back to its nest. As it walks, it leaves a special smell on the ground. This smell is like a map. Other ants can smell this path with their feelers and follow it to the food. When many ants use the same path, the smell becomes stronger. That’s why you see those straight lines of ants.
Ants also use smells for warning. If an ant is in danger, it sends out a different smell. This smell tells other ants, “Be careful! Danger is near!” Then the other ants will quickly run away or come to fight.
Besides smells, ants use touch to communicate. When two ants meet, they often touch each other’s feelers. It’s like they are shaking hands and sharing news. ▲ For example, they can tell if the other ant is a friend from the same nest.
Some ants even use sounds. They can make very quiet noises by rubbing parts of their bodies together. We cannot hear these sounds, but ants can feel them through the ground.

1 The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth. It can grow up to over30 meters long and its heart is as big as a car. Although it is huge, it eats some of the smallest animals and plants in the sea.
2 The giraffe is the tallest animal in the world. An adult giraffe can be as tall as 5 to 6 meters. Its long neck helps it eat leaves from the tops of trees that other animals cannot reach.
3 The cheetah is the fastest land animal. It can run at speeds of up to 100kilometers per hour. However, it can only keep this speed for a very short time.
4 The giant sequoia trees (巨杉) in California are some of the largest and oldest living things on our planet. The oldest one is about 3, 200 years old. They can grow very tall and wide.

B.I really hope to see the cutest animal on my own someday and watch how slowly it moves in the trees.
C. It’s unbelievable how fast it can run! I wonder why it can’t run that fast for a long time. It must use a lot of energy.

Twenty years ago in Costa Rica, three girls found a baby sloth (树懒) on a road. The little animal’s mother was killed by a car. These girls took the baby sloth to Judy, the owner of a hotel. Judy wanted to help, but she didn’t know how to look after the sloth, so she called the zoo. With the help of the zoo, Judy took good care of the baby sloth. She named the baby sloth Buttercup.
After her first success, more people brought Judy wounded (受伤的) sloths or baby sloths they found. Judy then opened a help centre. Today, the help centre has saved more than 500 sloths.
Sloths live in the forests of Central America. We can also see them in South America. They hang onto the trees with their claws (爪子). There are two main types of sloths. You can know them by the number of their claws. Sloths hardly move. They spend most of their time sleeping in the trees.
But now, with the increase of population, human beings cause a lot of problems for these slow and quiet animals. The main problem is that the forests are becoming smaller and smaller. On weekends, many families like to cook at home instead of eating out. Cooking at home has lots of benefits, and it can bring joy to everyone in the family.
First, it is easy to control the ingredients. You can buy fresh vegetables and meat when you go shopping. You don’t need to worry about food safety because you know exactly what you add to the dishes. For example, you can choose to put less sugar or salt, which is good for health.
Second, cooking at home helps family members share time together. Parents can invite their children to join in the cooking. Kids can help sort vegetables, wash plates, or even decorate the table with paper cutting. After cooking, the whole family sits in the living room or dining room to enjoy the meal. They talk about their work or school life, and this makes the family relationship closer.
Third, it saves money. Eating at restaurants often costs a lot, but cooking at home is much cheaper. You can borrow recipes from friends or find them in books written by famous writers. You don’t need to plan a big budget for the meal, and you can even make delicious biscuits as desserts.
Finally, cooking at home is a great way to relax. After a busy week, spending time in the kitchen to cook your favorite food can make you forget tiredness. You can listen to music while cutting vegetables, and the smell of freshly cooked food makes you feel happy.
In short, cooking at home is not only about eating, but also about family, health and happiness.

My classmates and I visited Britain before. It took us over 10 hours to get to Britain. What a long trip! We were tired, but very excited. We arrived at school called Clifton in a small city of Bristol. We spent two weeks studying there. When I saw the campus (校园), I fell in love with it. It was so beautiful. We couldn’t believe that such a beautiful place was a simple middle school. The buildings were like castles (城堡). We all wanted to lie down on the green grass and do nothing.

I became more confident when speaking English by learning from Linda. They told us that Linda had also taught some famous Chinese people. We were so lucky to learn from her!
On weekends, we visited many famous places in England, such as Stonehenge, Buckingham Palace, and the University of Oxford. But I was most excited when we went to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry because it was where Harry Potter was filmed (拍摄). I loved the place. 2. “it’s cool in these months”是“The best time to visit Beijing is in September or October”的原因,结合所给词语,此处用because“因为”引导原因状语从句。

“put some soft grass in it”铺垫柔软干草是给小鸟做“bed”窝;toy意为“玩具”、tool意为“工具”、plate意为“盘子”,都不能铺干草充当栖息处。
后文“tried to hide when she got close”小鸟躲藏,对应“afraid”害怕;brave意为“勇敢的”、lazy意为“懒惰的”、silly意为“傻的”,和躲藏行为矛盾。
固定搭配do one’s best to do sth.

According to a new study, kids can improve their brainpower by cooking, gardening and cleaning around the house.
It’s a study of 207 children. Scientists have found that housework like making meals and caring for plants had something to do with planning, self-controlling and remembering things.
Collected from children aged 5 to 13 in mid-2020, the results showed 86 percent of kids put their dirty clothes in the right place and cleaned up after playing. But only 59 percent made their own beds, just 26 percent sorted clothes after washing and 10 percent helped with cooking.
Older children are more likely to do housework than younger ones. Girls do more housework than boys. For example, only 49 percent of boys but 70 percent of girls made their own beds. Around 60 percent of kids, including 50 percent of boys and 61 percent of girls, helped do the dishes. Only 34 percent of kids aged five to seven did this, but 64 percent of those aged 11 to 13 helped.

Dear Julie,
I hope this letter finds you well.

With all these ways to share information, an ant colony can work together like one big family. This helps them find food, stay safe, and live successfully.
1.How do ants mainly communicate?
A.By making loud sounds. B.By using body languages.
C.Through dancing. D.Through special smells.
2.What does the word “path” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.A kind of food. B.A way to follow.
C.A friend’s name. D.A type of smell.
3.Which of the following can be the best fit for ▲ in Paragraph 4?
A.This is the only thing they share.
B.Sometimes they get angry at each other.
C.In this way, they can share different messages.
D.However, they don’t always understand the news.
4.Why does an ant send out a different smell when in danger?
A.To tell others to be careful. B.To help it find the way home.
C.To show it is happy. D.To call others to come and eat.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Ants are very strong animals. B.Ants have different kinds of jobs.
C.Ants have their own ways to “talk”. D.Ants like to live in big groups.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.C
1.根据第二段“The most important way is through smells.(最重要的方式是通过气味)”可知,蚂蚁主要通过特殊的气味进行交流。
2.根据第二段“As it walks, it leaves a special smell on the ground. This smell is like a map. Other ants can smell this path with their feelers and follow it to the food.(当它行走时,它在地上留下特殊的气味。这种气味就像地图。其他蚂蚁可以用触角闻到这条 path 并跟随它找到食物)”可知,这里的path 指的是蚂蚁留下的气味路线,即“一条可跟随的路径”。
3.根据第四段上下文,前文提到蚂蚁通过触碰触角来“sharing news(分享消息)”,后文举例说“For example, they can tell if the other ant is a friend...(例如,它们能分辨另一只蚂蚁是否是朋友)”。
4.根据第三段“If an ant is in danger, it sends out a different smell. This smell tells other ants, ‘Be careful!

When trees are cut down, sloths will fall and hurt themselves. Some sloths live near human beings and they sometimes are hit by cars or killed by dogs.

From Monday to Friday, we studied English. Although I can’t speak it fluently (流利地) yet, it was easy for me to understand what the teachers said. The teacher I liked most was Linda.
It felt like that we were in the film for real!
We enjoyed every day we spent there, but we had to return to China finally. I will never forget those days and I will revisit this place one day!
