The idea of climbing Everest disgusted me.The mountain came to represent the opposite of everything that I loved and respected about climbing. What had once been the final mountain climbing goal became the focus of a commercial guiding industry.Over the years, the crowds at Base Camp grew, leaving behind tons of trash.Whenever I was asked whether I’d climbed Everest,my answer was always the same:not interested.
That’s probably where my personal Everest story would have ended, were it not for an old friend and his obsession (迷恋) with one of the greatest mysteries. In 1999,Thom Pollard began to explore and found the remains of George Mallory, the celebrated British climber who disappeared while attempting to be the first to climb Everest. But Mallory’s partner,Sandy Irvine—and the camera he had likely carried—were not found. The mountain climbing world has been wondering whether they might have reached the top in 1924.
Pollard’s story moved me.I began to pack for the climb and expected that our advanced equipment would make it manageable, perhaps easy.I was wrong. On the highest point on the planet,I was more tired than I’d ever been in any climbing.Along the way,I continuously tipped my hat,not just to Mallory and Irvine but to anyone who has the drive to push himself or herself up this route. My search was in vain, but I began to reconsider Everest.
I witnessed many climbers, who were much more than just self-centered tourists. We shared route information, weather forecasts, and family photos—all united around common goals.
I went to Everest to seek Irvine. But in the end,I found something more difficult to get:the spirit that Irvine and Mallory shared. It was hiding in plain sight, right where it has always been:inside the brave souls who risk so much to follow in storied adventurers’ footsteps up Everest.
29. Why did the author hate climbing Everest at first?
A. His climbing goal was changed.
B. He couldn’t afford the climbing cost.

Second place is just the first loser. While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it doesn’t always lead to human flourishing and can create misery. Fortunately, there is a strategy to solve this complicated problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze.
Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Using slow-motion video captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium, researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists. More recent research has looked at the life span of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists survive them by four years, living to 76, on average. But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a handy revelation concerning this discrepancy (差异): “Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists; nevertheless, the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory illuminates the difference between upward and downward social comparison.
The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. It tends to lower the inner motivation, and thus the delights that people obtain from their activities. The concept at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.
33.What can be learned from the 1995 study?
A.Silver medalists smiled as frequently as bronze medalists.
B.Bronze winners appeared happier than silver medalists.
C.Bronze medalists’ smile lasted longer than every silver medalist’s.
D.Both medalists’ emotions were unchanged from the events to the podium.
34.What is the cause of the difference in medalists’ life span?
A.The stress from downward social comparison.
B.The motivation from upward social comparison.
C.The failure to maintain upward social comparison.
D.The effect of different types of social comparison.
35.What does the writer advise us to do to achieve happiness?
A.Learn from the top performers.
B.Commit to our consistent personal growth.
C.Try to be the best in every field.
D.Strengthen our achievement motivation.
36.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Social Comparison: A Double-Edged Sword for Athletes
B.Social Comparison: The Root of Misery in Human Competition
C.Coming in Third: The Unexpected Secret to Longevity
D.Coming in Third: The Advantages of Being “Good Enough”
D
Are you a logical thinker, or would you say that you’re more free-spirited and artistic? If you’re the former, somebody’s probably told you at some point that you’re a left-brained person, and if you’re the latter, right-brained. The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction.
Although we all obviously have different personalities and talents, there’s no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dominance of one half of the brain over the other half. Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn’t found any evidence of hemispheric (脑半球的) dominance. Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person?
If there’s no evidence for the fiction of right-brained and left-brained people, why do so many people accept it? Perhaps it just makes intuitive (直觉的) sense that people’s brains would be dominant on one side or the other just as their hands, feet, or eyes are. It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics.
When people are offered general descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptions of their own personalities, they tend to accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are positive. The “insights” they generate are both universal and congenial. After all, who would reject a description of themselves as “artistic and creative” or “reasonable and analytical”? The fiction is popular, in the end, because it gives us a “scientific” way to talk about our favorite subject — ourselves.
37. Which is a common belief about people’s individual characteristics?
A. A logical thinker is right-brained.
B. Our right brain and left brain work the same.
C. The right half of the brain is the analytical half.
D. The dominant half of brain determines one’s characteristics.
38. Why does the author mention mathematics in paragraph 2?
A. To show that math is a logical subject.
B. To argue that creativity is irrelevant in analytical thinking.
C. To prove that left-brained people are better at problem-solving.
D. To prove personality and talent differences aren’t due to hemispheric dominance.
39. Why do many people believe in the left-brain/ right-brain theory?
A. This theory is widespread and popular.
B. Scientific studies have confirmed its accuracy.
C. It provides a way for them to sort personalities.
D. Brain imaging technology has shown clear hemispheric differences.
40. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Why Left-Brained People Are Smarter?
B. The Science of Math: Left or Right Brain?
C. The Truth Behind Hemispheric Dominance
D. Ways to Develop Both Logical and Creative Thinking

Exam Anxiety
Has this ever happened to you? You’ve been studying hard for your midterm, but when you walk into your exam, your mind goes blank, your heart races fast, you get sweaty palms and find it hard to breathe. ____41____
Everyone feels stressed during exams. Usually, it results from a fear of failure, lack of enough preparation time and bad experiences taking tests in the past. This is normal and often helps you work harder, think faster and generally improve your performance. ____42____ You may also feel that other people are managing the exam better than you. This can cause you to feel that your mind has “gone blank” on information you know you have revised.
____43____ Some choose to ignore the problem, while others don’t review because they think they will do badly anyway and even miss exams due to the anxiety. It can also be really easy to think that if you don’t try and then you fail, you won’t feel as bad as if you fail after trying really hard.
So what can you do to fight against the negative mindset and stay calm before and during your test? ____44____ Yes, this seems obvious, but it’s worth repeating. If you feel confident that you’ve prepared thoroughly, you’ll feel more confident walking into the test. The second tip is simple: just start. The blank page can maximize your anxiety. ____45____ You can always go back and change things later if needed, but a few quick answers can get the ball rolling. Besides, allocating (分配) your time is equally important. Look through the whole test before getting started. Mentally allocate how much time you’ll spend on each section. If there’s time to recheck, even better.
A. The first thing you should do is to be prepared.
B. People often deal with exam stress in many unhelpful ways.
C. If these classic signs of exam anxiety sound familiar, you’re not alone!
D. Therefore, people need an appropriate amount of pressure to help deal with exams.
E. Realizing time is almost up and that there’s still a lot of blank space will make you desperate.
F. However, if you are overly anxious about the result, you may be unable to focus on your work.
G. After you get the paper, dive right in by getting some questions done to build up your confidence.

Mrs Flippen’s class sat listening to a talk being given by a local author. Tucker sat absent-mindedly in one of the library chairs. Most of the students wanted to hear about the writer’s work. Tucker did not.
“Why bother?” Tucker thought to himself. He always received low marks on his writing assignments, no matter how hard he worked on them. He could never think of anything interesting to write about.
“Does anyone have any questions?” Mrs Flippen asked her class.
Tucker raised his hand, “How do you know what to write about?”
“Well, sometimes I don’t,” the author replied. “It takes a lot of hard work to come up with ideas.” She reached down and pulled a worn-looking book from a cloth bag on the floor. “I find making a scrapbook (剪贴簿) helps.”
Tucker sat up a little straighter in his seat. “What’s in the book?” he asked.
“I fill it with pictures, stories, and notes about things that interest me.” The writer opened the scrapbook on her knee. “When I need an idea, I look through the book instead of staring at a blank page.”
Tucker thought about the author’s scrapbook as he walked home. He thought about staring at a blank page each time he tried to write a story. Digging in his bookcase, Tucker found an old binder (活页夹). He filled the binder with notepaper from his desk. After supper, Tucker cut some pictures out of the newspaper. Then he drew some pictures of his own. He cut and pasted (粘贴) stories from his old magazines. Then he looked up the words he did not know and wrote down their meanings.
In the days and weeks that followed, Tucker collected more ideas. He found that the more he collected, the easier it became to find things to collect. Tucker’s book of ideas grew fatter and fatter.
One morning, Mrs Flippen told the class about a story writing competition. Tucker wanted to win and he tried to make a good story.
That night, Tucker looked through his scrapbook instead of staring at a blank page. At first, nothing happened. Slowly, he began to fit pieces together like a puzzle. He picked a setting for his story from a picture. He used the name from an article for his character. Tucker’s story started to grow. He worked on it every night until it came time to hand in the story.

28.B 29.D 30.B 31.D
根据第二段中“Using slow-motion video captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium, researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. (通过使用在赛事结束后即刻以及在颁奖台上拍摄的慢动作视频,研究人员发现,铜牌获得者在平均意义上看起来比银牌获得者更快乐。)”可知,1995年的研究表明,铜牌获得者看起来比银牌获得者更快乐。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists; nevertheless, the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory illuminates the difference between upward and downward social comparison. (换句话说,银牌获得者会认为自己是第一失败者,因为他们总是将自己与最高领奖台上的选手进行比较,而忽略了其他所有未能登上领奖台的选手;然而,铜牌获得者则会将自己与所有从未登上过领奖台的选手进行积极的比较。这一理论揭示了向上型和向下型社会比较之间的差异。)”可知,奖牌获得者寿命差异的原因在于不同类型的社会比较带来的心理影响。故选D项。
30.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The concept at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you. (这里起作用的理念是:努力提升自己的过往表现,而你唯一需要与之进行比较的对象就是你自己。)”可知,作者建议我们致力于持续的个人成长,即与自己比较、不断进步,从而获得成功。故选B项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Fortunately, there is a strategy to solve this complicated problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze.

根据第二段中的“Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person? (例如,数学需要逻辑思维,因此通常被认为与左脑有关。但数学除了是逻辑性的,还涉及高度的创造性努力。那么,一个有天赋的数学家是右脑主导还是左脑主导呢?)”可知,作者提及数学是为了举例说明:数学既需左脑关联的逻辑思维,也需右脑关联的创造性,从而证明性格和天赋差异并非由脑半球主导性决定。故选D项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics. (这也可能与我们看似无限的“分类欲望”有关——我们希望根据自己(和朋友)的情感和智力特征,将自己归入不同的“类型”。)”可知,人们相信左右脑理论,是因为它为人们提供了一种划分性格类型的方式。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段中的“The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction.
