20-year-old Edgar McGregor decided to visit his local park, Eaton Canyon, day in and day out to pick up as much litter as he could fit in two buckets (提桶). Now, over 589 days and 19,000 Twitter followers later, he is more passionate (热爱的) than ever about his task to save the planet!
Edgar found out that Los Angeles would be the host of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. Knowing the state of the national forest at the time, he feared that its grounds that were full of litter would make the city a “global embarrassment,” so he decided to make cleaning it up his new passion project.
As time went on, he began documenting his progress on Twitter. Soon, he began encouraging others to start park cleanup projects of their own.
As part of southern California’s Angeles National Forest, Eaton Canyon can see quite a bit of daily foot traffic. On one particularly busy day, Edgar spent five hours picking up litter and came away with over 1,000 pounds of rubbish. Rain or shine, Edgar headed over to carry out his task. He worked through conditions like snowstorms, a record heat wave, and even a forest fire on the opposite side of the park.
The more he did, the more treasures he discovered. In addition to a lot of old iPhones and cans, Edgar collected enough recyclables to earn around 30 dollars every few weeks, which he would donate to nonprofits.
Recently, Edgar began noticing that the top-littered areas in his park were becoming few and far between. At one point, he spent four hours moving around the park and only returned with two buckets. Edgar plans to return to Eaton Canyon two or three times a week to keep up with the maintenance, but he is excited to start expanding his reach to new locations. Though he realizes this doesn’t mean his journey is complete, he is excited to have already achieved so much!
4. Why is the 2028 Summer Olympic Games mentioned?
A. To describe what made Edgar famous.

D. To discuss why Edgar started exploring the national forest.
5. Which of the following can best describe Edgar?

Vertical farming, which grows plants indoors using artificial light and AI. promises a climate-friendly way to address food insecurity without the massive land and water footprint. However, recent rising costs and worldwide skyrocketing energy prices have made these farms’ near- constant electricity demand unaffordable. Most vertical farms currently grow only greens such as lettuce and herbs because of their low water consumption and speedy development. Yet, lettuce cannot feed the world.
To truly address food insecurity, vertical farms must expand their offerings, and that means finding a way to introduce pollinators (传粉昆虫), such as bees and bats, into high- tech indoor farming operations. It’s difficult to get the job done because domesticated honeybees, commonly used by commercial growers, have trouble sensing direction under artificial light, and hand pollination is extremely time- intensive and thus expensive.
To solve the problem, researchers have been working on robotic pollinators, which have recently made their way into commercial operations. Polybee, a Singapore- based company founded in 2019, adapts widely available mini drones (无人机) for various types of indoor agriculture operations, including vertical farms. The company’s AI- powered software directs equipped with color camera sensors that measure key features for growers to fly near plants. Then, the drones carefully disturb the air around them to shake flowers when the conditions inside are ideal for pollination. This activity shakes the pollen (花粉) out of the flower and kicks off the process of reproduction.
Recently, Polybee has tried the tomato pollination and claims to have perfected the process. They’re still working on adjusting their products to work with other types of plants, such as strawberries and blueberries. But each plant comes with its own complexities. Certain varieties may require direct contact with robots, perhaps small drones.
Still, even if robotic pollinators save vertical farms from disuse, it’s unlikely that any form of indoor agriculture can fully replace the fields humans have relied on for millennia. “We need to rethink agriculture in the face of climate change and population growth, but vertical farms shouldn’t be looked at as competitive — because they’re not,” says Thomas Graham, a researcher of environment agriculture at the University of Guelph.
8. What can be inferred about vertical farms from paragraph 1?
A. They are reducing reliance on energy. B. They struggle to attain the desired goal.
C. They currently grow a wide variety of crops. D. They are greatly impacted by AI technologies.
9. How do Polybee’s mini drones assist indoor agriculture?
A. By removing air pollutants. B. By spreading pollen via airflow.
C. By detecting diseases in plants. D. By carrying pollinators like bees.
10. What is a current concern with Polybee’s drones?
A. Difficulties in adjusting direction. B. Risk of damaging flowers.
C. Challenges in product upgrades. D. Applicability to different plants.
11. What does Thomas Graham think of vertical farming?
A. They can coexist with traditional farming. B. They are more productive than outdoor farms.
C. They are losing favor with commercial growers. D. They should be prioritized due to climate change.
D
When Alexander Fleming returned to his lab in 1928, he found a bacteria culture he had grown was infected by fungus (霉菌). The fungus killed any bacteria colonies it touched. Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin”, and created the new field of antibiotics (抗生素).
That’s how most people see innovation: a flash of brilliance and a “eureka moment” when a new world is born in an instant. The truth, however, is not that simple. It wasn’t until 1943 that penicillin came into widespread use.
To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards (产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving criticism instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular theory, which suggested that disease resulted from “bad air”. After his death in 1865, germ (病菌) theory was finally accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work.
Fleming was a gifted biologist but a poor communicator. When he published his results in 1929, few took notice. In 1935, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain discovered Fleming’s paper, understood its importance, and developed methods to produce penicillin in quantity. By 1943, with World War II going on fiercely, the War Production Board asked 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics. Fleming, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.
Penicillin owes much of its success to government support. For many other groundbreaking innovations like the Internet and GPS, their innovators, while carving their own path, are often uncertain of where the opportunity lies until they team up with other informed officials and big firms that might have the resources to turn their ideas into reality quickly. So, look at any significant innovation and the myth of the lone genius, and the “eureka moment” breaks down.
12. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?
A. Definition of a traditional concept.
B. A description of a lab story.
C. Correction of a common misunderstanding.
D. An analysis of a scientific phenomenon.
13. What is the message conveyed in paragraph 3?
A. Great minds think alike.
B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. A stroke of luck paves the way for success.
D. Early work contributes to later breakthroughs.
14. What does the underlined part “ushering in” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Predicting. B. Starting.
C. Delaying. D. Transforming.
15. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Great Innovation: Individuals Are True Heroes
B. From Failure to Success: The Story of Penicillin
C. The lone Genius: Fleming’s Discovery of Penicillin
D. The Long Road to Penicillin: How Innovation Happens

C By detecting diseases in plants.
B 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第一段的句子“However, recent rising costs and worldwide skyrocketing energy prices have made these farms’ near- constant electricity demand unaffordable. Most vertical farms currently grow only greens such as lettuce and herbs because of their low water consumption and speedy development. Yet, lettuce cannot feed the world. (然而,最近不断上涨的成本和世界范围内暴涨的能源价格使得这些农场近乎恒定的电力需求难以承受。大多数垂直农场目前只种植生菜和草药等蔬菜,因为它们的用水量低,发展迅速。然而,生菜不能养活全世界。)”可推断,垂直农场因高电费和作物单一,尚难实现解决粮食安全的目标。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段句子“Then, the drones carefully disturb the air around them to shake flowers when the conditions inside are ideal for pollination. This activity shakes the pollen (花粉) out of the flower and kicks off the process of reproduction. (然后,当内部条件适合授粉时,无人机会小心翼翼地扰乱周围的空气,摇晃花朵。这一活动将花粉从花中摇出来,开始了繁殖过程。)”可知,无人机借气流震动花朵使花粉散落,从而完成授粉。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段句子“They’ re still working on adjusting their products to work with other types of plants, such as strawberries and blueberries. But each plant comes with its own complexities. (他们仍在努力调整他们的产品,以便与其他类型的植物一起使用,比如草莓和蓝莓。但每种植物都有其自身的复杂性。)”可知,当前忧虑在于产品对不同作物的适用性。故选D项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据末段Thomas Graham的话“We need to rethink agriculture in the face of climate change and population growth, but vertical farms shouldn’t be looked at as competitive — because they’ re not (面对气候变化和人口增长,我们需要重新思考农业,但垂直农场不应该被视为具有竞争力——因为它们没有竞争力)”可知,他认为垂直农场应与传统农业共存,而非替代。故选A项。
C 13. D 14. B 15. D
根据第一段讲述弗莱明发现青霉素“灵光一现”故事,以及第二段“That’s how most people see innovation: a flash of brilliance and a “eureka moment” when a new world is born in an instant. The truth, however, is not that simple. It wasn’t until 1943 that penicillin came into widespread use. (大多数人对创新的看法就是这样:灵光一闪,伴随着“eureka moment (顿悟时刻)”,一个全新的世界瞬间诞生。然而,事实并非如此简单。青霉素直到1943年才得到广泛应用)” 可知,前两段先呈现大众对创新的普遍认知,再用青霉素1928年发现却1943年才普及的事实纠正了人们对创新的一种常见误解,即创新不是瞬间完成的。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards (产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving criticism instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular theory, which suggested that disease resulted from “bad air”. After his death in 1865, germ (病菌) theory was finally accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work.
根据第四段中“By 1943, with World War II going on fiercely, the War Production Board asked 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics.
所以D项“The Long Road to Penicillin: How Innovation Happens (青霉素的漫长之路:创新如何发生)”最能概括文章主旨,适宜用作标题。

根据上文“Boundaries are personal guidelines that define what is and is not okay in your interpersonal relationships. As everyone has different needs and comfort levels, they may appear different for each person. Establishing healthy boundaries may provide such benefits, as avoiding burnout, boosting self-esteem and maintaining personal space. Once you’ve set your boundaries, it’s crucial to review them on a regular basis to remain relevant to your life circumstances.(界限是个人的准则,它定义了在人际关系中什么是可以的,什么是不可以的。由于每个人都有不同的需求和舒适程度,它们可能对每个人来说都是不同的。建立健康的界限可能会带来这样的好处,比如避免倦怠、增强自尊和保持个人空间。一旦你设定了你的界限,定期回顾它们以保持与你的生活环境相关是至关重要的)”可知,建立健康的界限是非常必要的。故D选项“因此,在社会交往中设定健康的界限是必不可少的”符合语境,故选D。
【17题详解】
由下文“The way you set them reflects your attitude to taking responsibility in life. Taking the time to think about your wants and needs in different situations will help you understand how your values influence boundary-setting. Once you have made the list of your values, needs, and wants, you should use knowledge to establish clear boundaries that respect yourself and those around you.(你设定目标的方式反映了你对生活负责的态度。 故选A。
由上文“Also, when you have identified your boundaries, it is important to communicate them effectively.(此外,当你确定了自己的界限后,有效地与他们沟通是很重要的)”和下文“Express your ideas in an open and straightforward manner and speak up for yourself so that others can hear, understand and respect your needs.(以开放和直接的方式表达你的想法,说出自己的想法,这样别人就能听到、理解和尊重你的需求)”可知,上文强调有效沟通界限的重要性,下文则提到了具体沟通时的建议,如开放直接地表达、维护自己等,所以本空表达与“沟通技巧”有关话题。
由上文“In addition to the points mentioned above, learning how to say “no” is essential. Saying “yes” to everything can result in stress, burnout, and frustration. Furthermore, it’s vital to evaluate what is acceptable and unacceptable.(除了上面提到的几点,学会如何说“不”也很重要。对所有事情都说“是”会导致压力、倦怠和沮丧。此外,评估什么是可接受的,什么是不可接受的是至关重要的)”和下文“If the situation persists, remove yourself from it respectfully. You deserve more than surrounding yourself with people who don’t value your values.(如果这种情况持续存在,恭敬地离开它。你应该得到更多,而不是让你周围的人不重视你的价值观)”可知,上文提及学会说“不”的重要性,下文则提到了当有人越界时的应对措施及最终可能需要远离不尊重你界限的人,因此本空应表达与“说‘不’的方法”相关话题。因此,C选项“当你觉得有人越界了,提醒他们”作为处理界限被侵犯情况的第一步,与后文的进一步行动相衔接,能承上启下,符合题意。故选C。
