71-year-old, Helen Lloyd Jones from Cardiff recently completed her first marathon and is encouraging others of her age to take up the challenge. “Do it. We only live once,” she said after the event.
Helen took up running in her 50’s while working as a teacher. After jogging alongside one of her students during a sports day race, Helen said, “I felt terrible, absolutely terrible. It was a wakeup call and I started to practise jogging.”
Helen started attending her local parkrun, but decided she needed a bigger challenge to keep her motivated. Once the idea of running 26.2 came into her head, she was decided, and set her sights on running a larger race, using the support of the crowds to get her round.
Helen didn’t tell her husband for the first five months of her training as she knew he’d be worried about the toll the distance might have on her, saying afterwards, “The difference between the man who waved me goodbye and the smiling man who greeted me when I returned was a reflection of how much he had been worrying. But he is very proud of me.”
At 71, Helen explains how she didn’t do her training “by the book”. After trying to do a long run, a speed run and a hill run each week, she soon found her body was not able to recover fast enough between sessions. Instead, she chose one long run a week with her local running club Pegasus and friend Sally, so she could feel confident with the distance.
A proud grandmother, Helen is now taking her grandchildren to parkruns and junior parkruns. She hopes that they will remember running with their grandmother when they grow up. Are there more marathons in her future? “I said I would only do the one, but have a feeling that if I got a place in London or New York... I might change my mind.”
24.Why did Helen start to practise jogging?
A.To improve her health. B.To take up the challenge.
C.To win the respect of her students. D.To set an example to her students.
25.Why didn’t Helen tell her husband about her training for marathon?
A.She wanted to surprise her husband.
B.She wanted to avoid her husband’s quarrel.
C.She was afraid that her husband would be concerned.
D.She didn’t wish her husband to understand the hardships.
26.What was probably Helen’s future plan?
A.To run more marathons nonstop.
B.To accompany grandchildren every day.
C.To run marathons with her grandchildren.
D.To continue to run marathons if she can make race rankings.
27.Which of the following can best describe Helen?
A.Kind and helpful. B.Athletic and determined.
C.Generous and strict. D.Traditional and patient.
C
By now we all know the importance of drinking enough water throughout the day, but there is such a thing as too much. Earlier this summer, a 35-year-old Indiana woman, died from water toxicity (毒性作用) after drinking too much water in a short period of time, according to a local news report.
While drinking enough water is important, overdoing it can lead to low levels of sodium (钠) in the blood, which can be life-threatening, according to Julia Zumpano, an expert at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition.
Exactly how much is enough for our body depends on a variety of factors, including our weight, age, location and overall health. People in poor health, or active people such as athletes, are at risk of water toxicity, as they tend to drink large amounts of water and lose sodium through their sweat. So are women and children because of their smaller body size.
While the gold standard for many years has been eight glasses of 8 ounces (盎司) of water per day, the National Academy of Medicine suggests enough water intake is about 125 ounces for men and about 91 ounces for women. And it recommends not drinking more than 48 ounces of water per hour. This includes total water from fruits, vegetables and other drinks besides water.
If you struggle with getting enough water per day, you can try water bottles to help track your water intake. Eating fruits and vegetables can also increase our water intake. You could experiment with adding flavor to improve the taste of your water.
“Most people had better keep drinking water throughout the day, but larger amounts may be needed in the heat for an extended period of time or during exercise. If you are thirsty for water — listen to your body. But don’t overdo it,” says Zumpano.
28.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By giving an example. B.By showing the findings.
C.By making a comparison. D.By putting up a question.
29.What effect may drinking too much water have on us?
A.Putting on weight. B.Speeding up aging.
C.Cutting sodium in blood. D.Making us more active.
30.What do we know from paragraph 4?
A.We must drink less than 48 ounces of water a day.
B.Women can take in more water than men an hour.
C.We can take in little water from fruits and vegetables.
D.We’d better drink about 64 ounces of water daily according to the popular belief.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.What is the result of water toxicity?
B.How much water is too much water?
C.Why do you find it difficult to drink enough water?
D.How often need we remind ourselves to drink water?
D
We all know that physical appearance matters to many people. However, a dangerous new trend among young men is raising serious worry. While many turn to healthy habits to improve their confidence, “looksmaxxing” takes this desire to an extreme level.
Looksmaxxing is a trend where young men try their best to become as physically attractive as possible. It can include simple lifestyle changes, but many followers use risky methods. Some even use invasive (侵入式) ways, such as applying pressure to facial bones to change the shape of their jaw. The extreme design of these methods aims to create a “strong jawline” and a more traditionally male look.
In fact, it is a trend that relies on unproven and often harmful techniques. From cosmetic surgery (整容手术) to risky “bone reshaping”, many of these practices are not controlled properly. Users often share these methods on social media, spreading wrong information widely. Because many of these steps are done without professional help, they greatly increase the risk of permanent damage in bodies. Rather than focusing on overall health, the trend only cares about surface-level changes, often leading to dangerous choices.
What’s more, the obsession with appearance has severe effects on mental health. Always chasing an impossible ideal leads to anxiety, low self-respect, and body image problems. In addition, the financial cost of these procedures can lead to debt and further stress, creating a terrible cycle.
Many experts are speaking out against this trend. Dr. Stuart Murray warns that young men are falling into the trap of never being satisfied with themselves. Mental health experts encourage building self-respect through lasting ways, like developing skills, hobbies, and healthy relationships. “We believe in building real confidence, not just a temporary appearance,” said one expert.
32.What can be learned about looksmaxxing from Paragraph 1?
A.It promotes healthy habits. B.It reaches harmful extremes.
C.It gains support of doctors. D.It targets people of all ages.
33.What risk does looksmaxxing bring?
A.Danger of physical harm. B.Loss of personal hobbies.
C.Decline in social popularity. D.Spread of fitness methods.
34.What can be inferred about the experts’ advice?
A.Outer beauty helps build self-respect. B.Inner quality matters more than appearance.
C.Cosmetic procedures build true confidence. D.Temporary images bring lasting happiness.
35.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.New cosmetic surgery methods. B.Methods to build true confidence.
C.Harmful effects of looksmaxxing. D.Healthy lifestyles for young men.
People only exhibit their best moments on social media. Some celebrities are airbrushed (美化) or hide the truth of their plastic surgery. Many people photoshop their faces and bodies to look exactly how they want. 36 It seems that all the people are in pursuit of presenting their best images.
Beyond these “best images”, some social media heavily promote eating disorder culture and unhealthy attitudes about food and weight in general. Some social media also promote over-exercising. 37 However, pushing yourself too hard can be harmful and contributes to some eating disorders. When someone is exercising a lot, they need to eat more to fuel their body, but some people are often eating less than they should while pushing their bodies beyond the limit.
38 Basically, people who struggle with eating disorders tend to think that they aren’t “sick enough”. If they encounter others with eating disorders, they constantly compare themselves. Thus, people, using social media, need to avoid posting videos or pictures with body checking, constant weighing, or calorie counting. This type of content simply isn’t helpful for anyone. So if you feel like you need to lose weight, discuss it with your doctor and make a personalized plan. 39
As for me, I’ve learned a lot from my own struggle with an eating disorder. During my treatment, the most striking thing my nutritionist said to me was, “ 40 ” She’s absolutely right. Self-love isn’t always realistic; self-acceptance is much better.
A.You need to love your body.
B.Take yourself as what you are.
C.Indeed, proper exercising is healthy.
D.A lot of the actual photos are straight-up fake.
E.There are countless methods of changing their bodies.
F.Don’t listen to strangers who don’t know you or your body.
G.It’s essential to avoid posting things that could cause body image issues.

I am a senior one student named Leo. I used to be a total couch potato and I’d rather stick to my classroom seat or dorm bed than step outside for even a minute. For meals, I always reached for instant noodles or fried chicken. After school, I would spend all my time on mobile games until midnight, paying no attention to any kind of physical activity.
As time went by, the situation became worse, and slowly, my body began to send out warnings. Every class felt like a big struggle. I felt sleepy in class all the time, and I could hardly focus on the teacher’s words. My teacher noticed my tired eyes more than once, and finally, she held my arm gently and told me to go to the school doctor for a check-up.
After a thorough examination, the doctor said my poor health was caused by too little exercise, irregular sleep, and an unhealthy diet. She frowned (皱眉) slightly as she warned me that if I didn’t change, it would harm my long-term health.
When my classmate Jason heard about this, he kindly invited me to join the school running club. To be honest, I felt ashamed of my poor fitness. So, his invitation fell on deaf ears. I stuck to my old habits, telling myself I was just “not the sporty type.” I thought I would be fine, but my body didn’t lie.
Last week, we had the regular 800-meter test in PE class. As everyone else lined up, my heart sank. I dragged my feet to the starting line, hoping just to finish. But after only 200 meters, it was as if all the warnings came crashing down on me. I was gasping (喘气) for air, and I had to stop, my face pale not just from effort, but from a sudden, clear realisation of how weak I had become.注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
It was at that moment that I recalled Jason’s invitation.

M: What’s wrong?
W: Oh, it’s just this news story I’m reading.
M: What’s it about?
W: It’s about an animal shelter in Kraków. A few weeks ago, the weather forecasts for that part of Poland were predicting temperatures of around –20℃.
M: That’s cold...
W: True. But the shelter didn’t have enough indoor space. Many dogs were being kept outside, and there’s no way they would have survived.
M: So, what did the shelter do?
W: They called for local people to take the dogs in, just until the weather warmed up again. And they received amazing responses. All 123 dogs found homes for the time being.
M: Wow, that’s great!
W: Even the police, who came to issue parking tickets to cars around the shelter, ended up taking a dog back to the station!
M: No way!
W: Better yet, after the weather warmed up, only 30 dogs were returned to the shelter. Most people decided to keep them.
M: Well, I’d call that a happy ending. So...why are you crying?
W: I don’t know! It’s just so lovely when people all pull together to help those in need.

M: There’s nothing more fantastic than a nice hot meal on a cold winter day. But what if you have no way of heating your lunch or ordering a hot meal? That’s where the world’s first microwave bag comes into place. Made out of a special material developed by the Japanese company Sanki Consys Co. Ltd., the Willtex “Willcook” microwave bag can heat up whatever you have stored inside to 80°C in just 5 minutes. The bag itself weighs just 160 grams, while the rechargeable battery pack powering it weighs an extra 120 grams. The “Willcook” microwave bag is made from flexible material which generates heat just by drawing power from a battery pack. This kind of material has the same flexibility and lightness as regular cloth, yet it provides quick and uniform heating. The inside of a “Willcook” microwave bag reaches 80°C in 5 minutes after being powered on, but users can set the temperature between 40°C and 250°C via a smartphone app called Hotopia. Meanwhile, this special material also makes the “Willcook” microwave bag great for keeping drinks cool in the summer.

【答案】24.A 25.C 26.D 27.B
根据第二段“After jogging alongside one of her students during a sports day race, Helen said, “I felt terrible, absolutely terrible. It was a wakeup call and I started to practise jogging.”(在一天的运动比赛中,海伦和她的一个学生一起慢跑,她说:“我感觉很糟糕,非常糟糕。这是一个警钟,我开始练习慢跑。”)”可知,海伦开始练习慢跑是为了改善她的健康。故选A。
根据第四段“Helen didn’t tell her husband for the first five months of her training as she knew he’d be worried about the toll the distance might have on her(海伦在训练的前五个月没有告诉她的丈夫,因为她知道他会担心这段距离可能会对她造成伤害)”可知,海伦不告诉她丈夫她参加马拉松训练的事是因为她担心她丈夫会担心。故选C。
根据最后一段“Are there more marathons in her future? “I said I would only do the one, but have a feeling that if I got a place in London or New York... I might change my mind.”(她未来还会参加更多马拉松比赛吗?“我说过我只参加一次,但我有种感觉,如果我在伦敦或纽约拿到名次……我可能会改变主意”)”可知,海伦未来的计划可能是如果她能进入比赛排名,她将继续参加马拉松比赛。故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据第三段“Helen started attending her local parkrun, but decided she needed a bigger challenge to keep her motivated.(海伦开始参加当地的公园跑步,但她决定需要一个更大的挑战来保持动力)”以及倒数第二段“After trying to do a long run, a speed run and a hill run each week, she soon found her body was not able to recover fast enough between sessions.
【答案】28.A 29.C 30.D 31.B
第一段首句“By now we all know the importance of drinking enough water throughout the day, but there is such a thing as too much.(到目前为止,我们都知道一天中喝足够的水的重要性,但也有喝水太多的问题。)”首先提出了喝水过多会有不良后果,接着“Earlier this summer, a 35-year-old Indiana woman, died from water toxicity (毒性作用) after drinking too much water in a short period of time, according to a local news report.(据当地新闻报道,今年夏天早些时候,一名35岁的印第安纳妇女在短时间内喝了太多水后死于水中毒。)” 故选A。
根据文章第二段“While drinking enough water is important, overdoing it can lead to low levels of sodium (钠) in the blood, which can be life-threatening, according to Julia Zumpano, an expert at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition.(据克利夫兰诊所人类营养中心的专家Julia Zumpano说,虽然喝足够的水很重要,但过量喝水会导致血液中钠含量过低,这可能会危及生命。)”
根据第四段中的“While the gold standard for many years has been eight glasses of 8 ounces (盎司) of water per day, the National Academy of Medicine suggests enough water intake is about 125 ounces for men and about 91 ounces for women. And it recommends not drinking more than 48 ounces of water per hour.(虽然多年来的黄金标准是每天8杯8盎司的水,但美国国家医学院建议,男性的足够饮水量约为125盎司,女性约为91盎司。
所以 B 项“How much water is too much water?(多少水是过量的水?)”
【答案】32.B 33.A 34.B 35.C
根据第一段“While many turn to healthy habits to improve their confidence, “looksmaxxing” takes this desire to an extreme level.(虽然许多人通过养成健康习惯来提升自信,但“外貌至上”却将这种愿望推向了极端)”可知,“颜值最大化”会达到有害的极端。
根据第三段“Because many of these steps are done without professional help, they greatly increase the risk of permanent damage in bodies.(由于许多这些步骤都是在没有专业帮助的情况下完成的,因此会极大提升对身体造成永久性损伤的风险)”可知,“颜值最大化”会导致身体伤害的风险。
根据最后一段“Many experts are speaking out against this trend. Dr. Stuart Murray warns that young men are falling into the trap of never being satisfied with themselves. Mental health experts encourage building self-respect through lasting ways, like developing skills, hobbies, and healthy relationships. “We believe in building real confidence, not just a temporary appearance,” said one expert.(许多专家正在反对这一趋势。斯图尔特·默里博士警告称,年轻男性正陷入一种永远无法满足自己的陷阱中。心理健康专家鼓励人们通过持久有效的方式建立自尊,例如发展技能、兴趣爱好以及健康的人际关系。“我们相信要建立真正的自信,而不仅仅是暂时的表象,”一位专家表示)”可知,内在品质比外貌更重要。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“We all know that physical appearance matters to many people. However, a dangerous new trend among young men is raising serious worry. While many turn to healthy habits to improve their confidence, “looksmaxxing” takes this desire to an extreme level.(我们都知道,外貌对许多人来说很重要。

根据上文“People only exhibit their best moments on social media. Some celebrities are airbrushed (美化) or hide the truth of their plastic surgery. Many people photoshop their faces and bodies to look exactly how they want. (人们只会在社交媒体上展示自己最美好的时刻。一些名人被美化或隐瞒他们整容的真相。许多人把自己的脸和身体PS成他们想要的样子。)”可知,前文列举了社交媒体上很多使自己变美的例子,故此空是对前文的总结,故E选项“有无数的方法可以改变他们的身体。”符合语境,故选E。
37.根据上文“Beyond these “best images”, some social media heavily promote eating disorder culture and unhealthy attitudes about food and weight in general. Some social media also promote over-exercising. (除了这些“最佳图片”,一些社交媒体还大力宣传饮食失调文化,以及对食物和体重的不健康态度。一些社交媒体也提倡过度锻炼。)”以及后文“However, pushing yourself too hard can be harmful and contributes to some eating disorders .(然而,把自己逼迫太厉害也可能是有害的。)”
38.根据后文“Basically, people who struggle with eating disorders tend to think that they aren’t “sick enough”.
39.根据上文“So if you feel like you need to lose weight, discuss it with your doctor and make a personalized plan. (所以,如果你觉得你需要减肥,和你的医生讨论一下,制定一个个性化的计划。)”可知,上文建议和医生讨论制定减肥计划,推测本句是在说明关于减肥建议的注意事项。故F选项“不要听不了解你和你身体的陌生人的话。”符合语境,故选F。
40.根据后文“Self-love isn’t always realistic; self-acceptance is much better. (自爱并不总是现实的;自我接纳要好得多。)”可知,后文提到了要自我接受,即建议接受自己本来的样子,做自己。故B选项“做你自己。”符合语境,故选B。

【答案】
56.was reported 57.in 58.recovery 59.skipping 60.to miss 61.a 62.unhealthy 63.which 64.balanced 65.effectively
be in a…condition“处于……
warn sb to do sth“警告某人做某事”,此处应用动词不定式做宾补,故填to miss。
故填which。

One possible version:
Too much expenditure on fashion
Recently, an increasing number of students are pursuing fashion in our class. Some even spent a lot buying limited-edition sneakers in the hope of looking special and gaining admiration and respect.
Following fashion blindly can have bad effects. For one thing, many tend to get lost, and thus are unable to concentrate on their studies. And for another, it costs a lot to follow fashion, which is sure to increase the financial burden on their parents.
It goes without saying that it’s the inner beauty rather than our appearance that makes us respectable. It’s high time we realized our main task is to study hard but not to pursue fashion!
1.续写词数应为150左右;
It was at that moment that I recalled Jason’s invitation.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Weeks of regular running brought great changes to my life.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It was at that moment that I recalled Jason’s invitation. My face burned with shame as I stood there, breathless and weak. I deeply regretted refusing his kindness before. With my head down, I walked slowly towards Jason and asked in a low voice if I could still join the running club. He smiled widely and nodded immediately, patting my shoulder to encourage me. Starting the next day, I got up early to run with him. At first, I felt tired and wanted to give up, but Jason kept cheering me on, and I forced myself to keep going.
Weeks of regular running brought great changes to my life. I no longer felt sleepy in class and could focus much better on my lessons. My body felt stronger, and I no longer feared the 800-meter test. I gave up instant noodles and chose healthy food, and I also stopped staying up late playing games. I became more energetic and confident. Looking at my progress, I realized that small but consistent changes could completely turn my life around, and I was truly grateful for Jason’s help.
①后悔:regret /feel sorry for
②微笑:smile/grin
③专注于:focus on/concentrate on

1.续写词数应为150左右;
It was at that moment that I recalled Jason’s invitation.
