① China has more than a million bridges. Some of them are very old, while some are new and amazing. Together they show how a country respects its history while building the future.
② Take the Luoyang Bridge in Quanzhou, southeast China’s Fujian Province, for example. Built in the Song Dynasty, this ancient cross-sea bridge shows the wisdom of ancient Chinese engineers. It was one of the earliest Chinese bridges that used tide water (潮水) to move heavy stones.
③ Compared with Luoyang Bridge, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou Province is a modern wonder. It is the world’s tallest and longest bridge in mountainous areas, using enough steel cables (钢缆) to circle the Earth twice!
④ Some bridges in China are works of art. The Lugou Bridge in Beijing has many beautifully carved stone lions (石雕狮子) , which were praised long ago by the traveller Marco Polo. The Zhaozhou Bridge in Hebei Province is celebrated for its perfect shape and strength.
⑤ Bridges in China not only show science and art but also carry deep cultural meaning. They are a common subject in literary and artistic works. Across history, there have been a large number of poems, paintings and historical stories about bridges.
⑥ China also helps other countries build bridges. For example, the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge (中马友谊大桥) ended Maldives’ history without cross-sea bridges. These bridges show China’s role in helping the world connect and develop.
⑦ From ancient stone bridges to modern steel ones, from connecting roads to connecting cultures, China’s bridges are more than just buildings—they tell a story of creativity and connection. They stand as invitations for the world to cross, to connect, and to move forward together!
4. How many bridges are mentioned in the passage?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five.
5. What is Zhaozhou Bridge famous for?
A. Its skills of using tide water. B. Its great shape and strength. C. Its finely carved stone lions.
6. Why does the writer mention the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge?
A. To show China helps the world build connections.
B. To explain how ancient cross-sea bridges worked.
C. To introduce Maldives’ long bridge-building history.
7. Which is the right structure of the passage?
A. ①/②③④⑤/⑥⑦ B. ①/②③④⑤⑥/⑦ C. ①②/③④⑤⑥/⑦
C
Who are the inspiring people you look up to? Many students admire talented scientists or famous sports stars. However, some of the people who move us most are common people with strong courage. Jiang Yuhe is just such a young role model.
Jiang Yuhe is a post-00s girl. She was born in a small village in Nanyang, Henan. Coming from a farmer family, she worked as an assembly line (流水线) worker at an electronics factory (电子厂) after finishing junior high school.
“I could only do repeated (重复的) work because I didn’t have much knowledge or skills,” she said. “The boring days then made me doubt the meaning of my life.”
I really knew at the time that it wasn’t the life I truly wanted. I wanted a life full of hope, and I was afraid that the work might destroy my dreams. I wanted to continue my education and get some skills.”
With her parents’ support, she left the factory and entered Henan Chemical Technician College to study chemistry and chemical engineering in March 2018. For five years, she spent nearly all her free time practicing. She failed countless times, but she refused to give up. Finally, in an international competition, she won China’s first gold medal in this field. Her hard work paid off. In 2026, she received the title Young Pioneer of the New Era. Instead of enjoying the sudden fame, she chose to work as a teacher to pass on her skills and encourage more youth.
“There are no talented people who succeed overnight. Only those who keep fighting can make their dreams come true,” she often tells her students. Her story tells us that inspiration is not about natural gifts, but about daring to change your life and keeping trying even when others doubt you.
8. What did Jiang Yuhe really want at that time?
A. To return to her village to farm.
B. To make more money at the factory.
C. To continue her education and get skills.
9. Which phrase is closest in meaning to “paid off” in Paragraph 5?
A. ended very soon B. brought good results C. cost lots of money
10. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Natural talent is the key to success.
B. Success comes from long-time effort.
C. Changes are difficult for most people.
11. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. The Difficult Life of Factory Workers
B. How to Win International Gold Medals
C. Jiang Yuhe, A Young Inspiring Role Model

More than 35, 000 kinds of snacks are sold inside. Around one-third come from foreign countries, and products from nearly 6, 500 different brands (品牌) can be found here. Yang, a manager of the store, said they wanted to build a “snack amusement park”. He explained, “Many happy moments in life are connected with snacks, like festivals, parties, and picnics.
