第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
A
Getting into college is a big step for high school graduates, and it comes with a lot
of changes. For most students,it's the first time they're living away from home and
managing their own life. Not surprisingly, adapting to this new lifestyle can be
challenging. The following four tips will make high school graduates better prepared
for college life.
Goal setting
When setting goals,whether they're academic,career,or personal,remember they
should be attainable but not too easy,so that you really have to push yourself to achieve
them, and feel rewarded when you do.Writing down your goals and breaking down
each huge,long-term goal into smaller more practical ones can help make it feel more
real, and writing out a plan for achieving it can give you a roadmap to success.
Interpersonal skills
At college, you will interact with fellow students, professors, librarians, and many
others.Strong interpersonal skills will help you build relationships during this time, and
get more out of them.If you feel that your interpersonal skills need some work, practice
asking thoughtful questions and listening closely, develop your understanding by
putting yourself in someone else's shoes, and enhance your self-confidence.
Studying
With fewer in-class hours and more on-your-own learning, you're required to
really digest learning material rather than simply memorize facts. To be successful in
college you'll need to learn how to integrate large amounts of information obtained
through reading,do research, and write papers.Organization is the key,so if you are
not someone who is naturally organized, set up your study schedule.
Budgeting
Managing money is a critical life skill, and for many,it is at college that they
develop it for the first time.Start by estimating your financial balance. Then give high
priority to the expenses on basic needs and determine how much money to set aside
every month to cover those costs.Don't forget about savings ..and the fun
stuff(movies,dinners out),too.
21.Who is this passage most probably written for?
A.College teachers.
B.University graduates.
C.High school teachers.
D.Would-be college students.
22.What is the key to successful college study according to the author?
A.Being well-organized.
B.Being well-informed.
C.Effective reading skills.
D.Reliable research methods.
23.To learn how to manage money, the first thing to do is
A.save money for financial investment B.estimate one's income and expenses
C.set aside money for fun activities
D.open a personal bank account
B
Topiary, the practice of training plants into defined shapes, might remind people of
scenes from Alice in Wonderland.Michael Gibson believes its lessons go beyond the
aesthetic(审美).“Topiary teaches patience. After trimming(修剪),you have to wait for
new growth,"he explained."It can also reduce anxiety and improve focus."In other
words,it benefits both plants and humans.
To that end,Gibson uses his training in therapeutic horticulture(疗愈园艺)to
serve communities. He is known for his distinctive style, based on what he calls the
"Gibson method,"which has five elements:storytelling;geometry for balance and
harmony;a special tree-trimming technique that shapes trees;visual effects for striking
appearances;and directional trimming, which smooths the surface like brushing hair.
Depending on the plant variety and location,a single tree can take 5 to 10 hours to
complete, while larger projects may take 20 to 30 hours and need to be maintained two
or three times a year.At home in South Carolina,he retrims his topiaries every six to
eight weeks, and a design can take years to fully develop.
Gibson started developing his signature method early in life. His mother,a
beautician, taught him to cut hair, and his artist father introduced him to the
fundamentals of art-geometric shapes,proportional faces,and 3D images.After
years of practice in the yard,he tured topiary into a side job while doing other work.
Gradually, clients and neighbors noticed his vision, and by 2021 he transformed it into
a full-time career, focusing on and continuing to refine his topiary art.
Gibson is now creating a therapeutic sensory garden. He hopes it will be a place
both children and adults keep returning to,while teaching them lessons in horticulture
they can apply in everyday life."When we're throwing away dead wood and branches
we don't need anymore, think of those as bad habits,"he said."You need to cut off the
bad habits so they don't affect your design later. That's a life lesson."
24.Which aspect of topiary does Gibson stress in paragraph 1?
A.Its aesthetic value.
B.Its psychological benefits.
C.Its traditional methods.
D.Its commercial potential.
25.Which of the following best describes the Gibson method?
A.Tech-driven.B.Time-efficient.C.Straightforward.D.Multidimensional.
26.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The impact of family education.B.Gibson's path to his craft.
C.The challenge of topiary career.D.The popularity of topiary art.
27.What is the life lesson from horticulture according to Gibson?
A.Life is a jourey of rises and falls.
B.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
C.Removing what holds us back helps us grow.
D.What doesn't defeat you makes you stronger.

Cats aren't known for their sensitivity. But a new study published in the journal
Applied Animal Behaviour Science suggests that our feline friends may care more
about us and other pets in the house than we give them credit for. What it found was
that cats responded to the loss in a way that looked strikingly similar to mourning.
To dig deeper into this phenomenon,a team led by psychologist Jennifer Vonk and
her co-author Brittany Greene embarked on a comprehensive investigation. They
surveyed 412 cat owners or caregivers, asking them how their cat reacted after the
death of another pet in the house.Participants used a five-point scale to indicate
changes in the cats'behaviours in the days and weeks after the death. The recorded
behaviours were numerous:altered sleep,eating and playing habits,increased
vocalisation, spending more time alone, seeking human attention by sitting or lying
near them, showing fear or curiosity, interacting with remaining pets, grooming
changes, and even searching for the lost pet by sniffing its usual spots.
Respondents were also asked to describe the relationships between the cat and the
deceased pet,as well as their own bonds and grief. This indicated that cats form
connections and respond emotionally to loss.
It seems cats get sad when a companion dies, though it's hard to prove this. Some
cats changed their eating and playing habits.Others sought more human interaction.
And some even searched the house for their missing family members, lingering around
erature suuuvy-rr
the places where they used to play or sleep.Still,Jennifer cautions that there could be
other reasons for the changes in the behaviour besides cats'grief. They might be eating
more because they now have more access to the food bowl,or they might be playing
less because they no longer have a playmate.
But,she says, even if they do experience grief,it's probably different from the
kind that humans feel. It's more likely they're noticing that something has changed in
their social environment, and they are responding to the change with feelings of fear or
anxiety.
28.What is the main finding of the study on cats?
A.Cats are very emotionally stable animals.
B.Cats react only by changing their eating habits.
C.Cats avoid interaction with humans after a pet dies.
D.Cats might display mourning behaviours like humans.
29.What was the method used by researchers to gather data?
A.Conducting interviews with professionals.
B.Asking cat owners about their cats'changes.
C.Studying the cats'interactions with their owners.
D.Observing the cats in a controlled environment.
30.According to the study, which of the following behaviours may be unrelated to
grief?
A.Sitting or lying near humans.
B.Seeking more interaction with humans.
C.Eating more when there is food around.
D.Searching the house for the missing pet.
31.Why does Jennifer think cats react emotionally to another pet's loss?
A.They are experiencing the same grief as humans.
B.They feel abandoned and fearful when left alone.
C.They respond to changes in their social environment.
D.They have developed strong friendships with other pets.

Can a small group of drones (guarantee the safety and reliability of
railways and,at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year?
6
That is the very likely future of applying today's "eyes in the sky"technology to make
sure that the millions of kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure(基a础设施)
worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis.
Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could
do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail
infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The
more regularly they can be inspected, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time
performance will be improved.Costs would be cut and operations would be more
efficient(高效)across the board.
That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway
personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20
billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night,
to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be
avoided with drones assisting the crews'efforts.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value
services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any
safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones for rail don't need to be flying
overhead.Engineers are now working on a new concept:the rail drones of the future.
They will be moving on the track ahead of the train, and programmed to run
autonomously.Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of
the train could guide it like a co-pilot.With their ability to see ahead, they could signal
any problem,so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time
32.What makes the application of drones to rail lines possible?
A.The use of drones in checking on power lines
B.Drones'ability to work at high altitudes.
C.The reduction of cost in designing drones.
D.Drones'reliable performance in remote areas.
33.What does "maintenance"underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Personnel safety
B.Assistance from drones.
C.Inspection and repair.
D.Construction of infrastructure.
34.What function is expected of the rail drones?
A.To provide early warning.
B.To make trains run automatically.
C.To earn profits for the crews.B To accelerate transportation.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.What Faults Can Be Detected with Drones
B.How Production of Drones Can Be Expanded
C.What Diffioulty Drone Development Will Face
D.How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways

For most of my life,I always treated taste as fixed. When I moved to London,I
threw myself into work while my housemates were endlessly trying new things. My
automatic"no"to anything that"wasn't my thing"only kept me trapped in the same
daily routine. That left me feeling flat and a little empty.I began to question whether
my taste is fixed or could be trained.I once read that children need eight to fifteen tries
to accept a new food.36
I decided to start small. When a friend invited me to a book club,I resisted the
instinct (to dismiss it despite my longstanding dislike of reading and went
anyway.

Then came music and performance-all things I had previously disregarded.
38 Gradually.I became fascinated by the unfamiliar rhythms and movements and
felt proud of my survival in the end.
39 However,I stopped saying no before I had even begun.Most recently,I
tried out my local library's chess club.I was easily 30 years younger than everyone else,
but that didn't matter.Sitting opposite people with wildly different life stories made me
realize how rarely I speak with other generations. We talked about their past careers,
local news and new chess moves.Interestingly,I felt more connected there than with
people of my age.
Research suggests that engaging your curiosity in new activities can help protect
against age-related cognitive(认知的)decline.
Getting outside my
comfort zone now gives me a rush.
A.Yet,I was eager for engagement.
B.I didn't love everything straight away.
C For me,it is far more than brain health.
D.Initially,I was awkward and sometimes confused.
E.As expected, new tastes rarely come without discomfort.
F.To my surprise,I enjoyed the discussion and the people there.
G.Why shouldn't the same principle apply to social activities for adults?

One winter day,the temperature suddenly dropped sharply, with icy winds
howling outside and heavy snow blanketing the farm.It wasn't until late that afternoon
11
that we remembered our two ducks,a male and a female, were still at our poorly-built
small farm."Could they have frozen to death?"we wondered anxiously.
My mother and I hurried through the snow to the farm and,to our relief, found
them still alive.Their bodies were covered with snow, and they were too cold even to
quack().Huddling closely together for warmth, they looked weak and exhausted. We
quickly wrapped them in an old blanket and carried them home.
Back home,we took the ducks down to the basement and settled them in a warm
comner with food, water and some old towels. In the dim light, shadows fell across old
tools, ropes, broken baskets, fishing nets and other unused farm supplies that had been
left there for years. The ducks soon rested quietly side by side.
We decided to leave the ducks alone so they could recover peacefully.Since they
already had enough food and water,we didn't go downstairs again for the rest of the
day.
Everything seemed peaceful until that evening, when we were reading by the fire
in the living room and a strange sound suddenly came from downstairs. It was a dull
thumping noise, followed by a long pause.A few moments later, the sound returned,
slow but urgent.
"Could that be the ducks?"my mother asked.Curious and slightly worried,we got
up and went to check. It was indeed one of the ducks.Much to our surprise, the duck
brother had climbed nearly to the top of the basement stairs.Struggling to stay upright,
he flapped his wings wildly. Then, gathering all his remaining strength,he finally
pulled himself onto the highest step and fixed his eyes on us.
