Few names in the history of magic bring more wonder and fascination than Harry Houdini, a legendary escape artist who turned impossible tasks into breathtaking live shows. Born in Budapest, Hungary, on March 24, 1874, he moved to the United States with his family at the age of four. He grew up in a common family in Wisconsin and lived a simple life in his childhood. He deeply admired a French magician named Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, so he created his stage name after him, which later became a symbol for daring and spectacular escapes.
Yet Houdini’s early career was far from successful. For years, he struggled to make a living by performing card tricks and small illusions at carnivals and street shows. His life changed completely when he discovered his extraordinary talent for breaking free from tight controls. His simple handcuff (手铐) escapes gradually evolved into daring tricks that attracted audiences worldwide. He freed himself from locked milk cans filled with water, got out of the dangerous Water Torture Cell while hanging upside down, and even survived after being buried six feet underground. These heart-stopping performances earned him the nickname “The Handcuff King” and made him one of the highest-paid entertainers of his time.
Beyond his stage career, Houdini committed himself to exposing dishonest mediums and spiritualists who preyed on heart-broken families by pretending to communicate with their dead relatives. Believing that truth should never be sacrificed for profit, Houdini felt a strong responsibility to protect ordinary people from being cheated. Drawing on his comprehensive knowledge of magic skills, he clearly revealed how these cheaters created false illusions to fool common people. This meaningful act won him great praise, but also invited hatred and criticism from those he exposed.
Unfortunately, Houdini’s remarkable life came to a sudden end in 1926, when he was only 52 years old. Up to now, almost a century has passed, but his innovative spirit, wonderful performing skills and persistent pursuit of truth continue to encourage modern performers and those who stick to facts, securing his legacy as the greatest escape artist in history.
4. What can we learn about Harry Houdini from paragraph 1?
A. He was born into a well-off family.
B. He moved to the USA in his teens.
C. He was the best magician in history.
D. He took his stage name in honor of his idol.
5. Why does the author describe Houdini’s escape acts?
A. To illustrate his path to success. B. To compare different magic styles.
C. To show how dangerous they are. D. To uncover the secrets behind them.
6. What drove Houdini to reveal dishonest spiritualists?
A. His plan to get back at his critics.
B. His desire for more recognition.
C. His eagerness to prove his magic skills.
D. His sense of justice and responsibility.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Rise of a Magic Legend
B. A Magician’s Amazing Live Shows
C. Houdini: More Than a Great Escape Artist
D. Houdini: Champion Against Fake Spiritualists
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. D 7. C

【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的句子“Yet Houdini’s early career was far from successful. For years, he struggled to make a living by performing card tricks and small illusions at carnivals and street shows. His life changed completely when he discovered his extraordinary talent for breaking free from tight controls.(然而,胡迪尼的早期职业生涯远非成功。多年来,他努力靠在嘉年华和街头表演纸牌戏法和小幻术谋生。当他发现自己有挣脱牢固控制的非凡天赋时,他的生活完全改变了。)”和“These heart-stopping performances earned him the nickname ‘The Handcuff King’ and made him one of the highest-paid entertainers of his time (这些惊心动魄的表演为他赢得了“手铐之王”的称号,使他成为当时收入最高的艺人之一)”可知,描述逃脱表演是为了展示他的成功之路。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的句子“Believing that truth should never be sacrificed for profit, Houdini felt a strong responsibility to protect ordinary people from being cheated. (胡迪尼认为真相绝不应为了利益而牺牲,他感到有强烈的责任保护普通人不被欺骗)”可知,是正义感和责任感驱使他这么做。

C
Take a flashlight — the one on your phone will do — turn it on and place your fingertip over the bulb (灯泡). The red light you see comes from red-light photons bouncing inside your finger, rather than blood. This small test reveals a striking biological discovery: light is a vital source of energy for all living creatures, including human beings.
Since the early 2000s, two energy-saving technologies have taken over our daily lives. The first is the LED light, which has replaced most traditional lights. The second is heat-reflective glass, designed to keep buildings cool or warm. Together, these technologies dramatically narrowed the range of light we are exposed to indoors, where many people spend up to 90% of their time. According to neuroscientist Glen Jeffery at University College London, we have lost about 95% of the long wavelengths from red and infra-red (IR) light that our ancestors were naturally bathed in, both outdoors and indoors.
Why does this matter? In the late 1980s, Soviet biophysicist Tiina Karu discovered that red and near-IR light boosted energy production by speeding up mitochondria (线粒体). Later research confirmed that red light helps lower blood sugar, improves cognitive function, and may even protect against diseases like dementia and cancer. However, blue light from screens and LEDs slows down this energy-generating process. Jeffery compares the loss of red light to “21st-century scurvy” — a slow, growing shortage that exacerbates modern health problems.
The good news is that the solution is simple. Exposure to daylight or even a dimmed traditional bulb can help restore red-light levels. Although red-light therapy (疗法) devices exist, some are too strong and may cause physical discomfort. Jeffery suggests placing a small old-style lamp on your desk, as even a very dim one emits plenty of IR. He also calls on building designers to rethink lighting, pointing out that healthier lighting need not sacrifice energy efficiency. Some London hospitals have already set up outdoor areas to give patients and staff more access to natural light.
“You can live your life without red light,” says Jeffery, “but you cannot live healthily without it.”
8. Why does the author mention the fingertip-flashlight experiment in paragraph 1?
A. To prove blood reflects red light. B. To introduce light as an energy source.
C. To show phones can produce red light. D. To compare LED and traditional light brightness.
9. What has mainly caused the loss of long-wavelength light in modern life?
A. The wide use of screen-produced blue light. B. The reduction of time people spend outdoors.
C. The invention of energy-saving lighting devices. D. The popularity of LEDs and heat-reflective glass.
10. What does the underlined word “exacerbates” mean?
A. Improves. B. Worsens. C. Relieves. D. Prevents.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To promote red-light therapy devices. B. To warn against overuse of LED lighting.
C. To explain a health risk and suggest solutions. D. To compare natural and artificial light sources.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. C
【解析】

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Take a flashlight — the one on your phone will do — turn it on and place your fingertip over the bulb (灯泡). The red light you see comes from red-light photons bouncing inside your finger, rather than blood. This small test reveals a striking biological discovery: light is a vital source of energy for all living creatures, including human beings.(拿一个手电筒 —— 手机自带的手电筒就可以 —— 打开它,把指尖贴在光源处。你所看到的红光,来自红光光子在手指内部来回反射,而非血液。这个小实验揭示了一个惊人的生物学发现:光是所有生物包括人类至关重要的能量来源。)”可知,作者提及手电筒指尖实验,目的是引出“光作为能量来源”这一话题。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The first is the LED light, which has replaced most traditional lights. The second is heat‑reflective glass, designed to keep buildings cool or warm. Together, these technologies dramatically narrowed the range of light we are exposed to indoors…we have lost about 95% of the long wavelengths from red and infra‑red (IR) light…(第一项是取代大部分传统灯具的LED灯,第二项是用于调节建筑温度的热反射玻璃。这两项技术大幅缩小我们室内接触到的光的范围……我们失去大约95%的红光和红外长波光线。)”可知,LED灯和热反射玻璃的普及造成现代生活长波光线缺失。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Jeffery compares the loss of red light to “21st‑century scurvy” — a slow, growing shortage that exacerbates modern health problems.(杰弗里把红光缺失比作“21世纪坏血病”——一种持续加重的匮乏状态,会exacerbates现代各类健康问题。)”可知,坏血病是有害的,由此判断exacerbates表示“使恶化,加重”,与Worsens同义。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Jeffery compares the loss of red light to “21st‑century scurvy” — a slow, growing shortage that exacerbates modern health problems.(杰弗里把红光缺失比作“21世纪坏血病”,一种逐步加剧的匮乏,会加重现代健康问题。)” 以及第四段中的“The good news is that the solution is simple. Exposure to daylight or even a dimmed traditional bulb can help restore red‑light levels.(好消息是解决办法很简单。接触日光,甚至调暗的传统灯泡,都有助于恢复红光水平。)” 可知,文章一方面介绍缺少红光带来的健康风险,另一方面给出可行的解决途径。C 项“To explain a health risk and suggest solutions(阐释一种健康风险并给出解决办法)” 概括全文写作目的。

Beethoven famously composed several masterpieces while he was deaf, but surely even he would be impressed with this piece of research.
A group led by BCI expert Gremot Miller-Purz shows that experiences of quite a different tone can be created through BCI. Building on an established BCI method which mainly enables disabled people to write, the team has developed a new application by which music can be composed and transcribed onto a musical score (乐谱), just through the power of thought. All you need is a special cap which measures brain waves, the adapted BCI, a piece of software for composing music, and of course a bit of musical knowledge.
The basic principle of the BCI method used can be briefly described: various options, such as letters or notes, pauses, chords, etc., flash by one after another on a tablet. If you’ve received some training and can focus on the desired option while it lights up on a screen in front of you, you cause a minute (微小的) change in your brain waves. The BCI recognizes this change and draws conclusions about the chosen option.
Eighteen test subjects had to “think” melodies onto a musical score. All test subjects were in good physical health during the study and had a certain degree of basic musical andcompositional knowledge. Following user-centered design guidelines, researchers investigated the efficiency, the effectiveness and subjective criteria. The subjective criteria evaluation revealed that users were highly satisfied with the application. “The results of the BCI compositions can really be heard. And what is more important: the test subjects enjoyed it. The very positive results of the study with physically healthy test subjects are the first step in a possible expansion of the BCI composition to patients,” stresses Millie-Putz.
“Twenty years ago, the idea of composing a piece of music using the power of the mind was unimaginable. Now we can do it, but we still need a bit more time before BCI is mature enough for daily applications.”
12. Why is Beethoven mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To lead readers into the surprising BCI research.
B. To provide evidence BCI can create masterpieces.
C. To compare Beethoven’s music with BCI method.
D. To explain the role of deafness in musical creation.
13. What are test subjects required to do during the experiment?
A. Move their eyes to track flashing options.
B. Record emotional feelings while composing.
C. Listen to and evaluate the composed melodies.
D. Focus on the desired option to make a selection.
14. What can be inferred about the application from the text?
A. It has been put into wide use among musicians.
B. It may eventually assist people with disabilities.
C. It was originally designed to treat brain diseases.
D. It works more effectively than traditional methods.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Composing Music with the Power of Thought B. The Bright Future of Brain-Computer Systems
C. The Development of BCI Technology in Music D. The Basic Principle of Composing Music by BCI
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. A

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
ARE you happy? People often ask their friends this question; it shows they care. It’s a question that President Nicolas Sarkozy of France seems keen for social scientists to ask in his country. ___16___
During the annual “two sessions”, Chinese lawmakers and political advisors are discussing how to build “a happy China”.
____17____
Many studies have shown that wealthier nations tend to be happier than poorer ones; and richer people appear to be more satisfied than the less rich. But a recent Canadian study shows that the happiest people live in that country’s poorest provinces (Nova Scotia), while those in the richest (British Columbia) are among the least happy. Happiness is not determined by wealth.
Some scholars also believe that happiness is what people finally want and wealth is only a means towards this end. ____18____
So what is it that makes people happy, if it isn’t money?
In the US author Dan Buettner’s new book Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zone Way, there is a hint. ____19____ Rather, Buettner found that the four happiest cities on Earth, which span the globe from Denmark to Mexico, give priority to social networks, health and well-being.
Take Singapore as an example. The city-state has one of the highest population densities in the world.
____20____ However, in a recent survey, 95 percent of people said they were either very happy or quite happy. They gave their city high marks for cleanliness and safety — subways are clean and trains absolutely arrive on time, and police are helpful and good at their job.
China has achieved a rapid GDP growth and become the world’s second largest economy. However, to build “a happy China”, we need to emphasize people’s livelihoods and quality of life over fast economic growth. We need to look for alternative measures that would show national progress not just by how our economy is growing, but by how our lives are improving; not just by our standard of living, but by our quality of life.
A. Where are people happier?
B. In China, it’s a concern, too.
C. But what is the measure of happiness?
D. True happiness lies in struggling to be happy.
E. And its people are known for being workaholics.
F. It has nothing to do with their material wealth, intelligence or attractiveness.
G. If so, the priority now given to economic growth would appear to be a mistake.
【答案】16. B 17. C 18. G 19. F 20. E
【解析】

【17题详解】
根据下文“Many studies have shown that wealthier nations tend to be happier than poorer ones; and richer people appear to be more satisfied than the less rich. But a recent Canadian study shows that the happiest people live in that country’s poorest provinces (Nova Scotia), while those in the richest (British Columbia) are among the least happy. Happiness is not determined by wealth.(许多研究表明,较富裕的国家往往比较贫穷的国家更幸福;富人似乎比不那么富有的人更满意。但加拿大最近的一项研究表明,最幸福的人生活在该国最贫穷的省份(新斯科舍省),而最富有的省份(不列颠哥伦比亚省)却最不幸福。幸福不是由财富决定的。)”可知,下文通过加拿大最近的一项研究指出,幸福不是由财富决定的。选项C“But what is the measure of happiness?(但是幸福的衡量标准是什么?)”与下文内容一致,下文正是这个问题的答案,指的是幸福的标准不是财富。故选C。
【18题详解】
根据空前“Some scholars also believe that happiness is what people finally want and wealth is only a means towards this end.(一些学者还认为,幸福是人们最终想要的,财富只是实现这一目标的手段。)”以及下文“So what is it that makes people happy, if it isn’t money?(那么,如果不是金钱,是什么让人们快乐呢?)”可知,幸福才是人们想要的,而金钱并不是让人们快乐的原因。选项G“If so, the priority now given to economic growth would appear to be a mistake.(如果是这样的话,现在把经济增长放在首位似乎是一个错误。)”是上文内容的自然延续,同时引出下文的问题。故选G。
【19题详解】
根据上文“So what is it that makes people happy, if it isn’t money?(那么,如果不是金钱,是什么让人们快乐呢?)”可知,上文提出问题什么让人快乐。而空后“Rather, Buettner found that the four happiest cities on Earth, which span the globe from Denmark to Mexico, give priority to social networks, health and well-being.(相反,Buettner发现,世界上最幸福的四个城市——从丹麦到墨西哥——优先考虑的是社交网络、健康和福利。)”则指出,世界上最幸福的城市优先考虑的是社交网络、健康和福利。选项F“It has nothing to do with their material wealth, intelligence or attractiveness.(这与他们的物质财富、智力或吸引力无关。)”指出该问题的答案,指的是幸福和物质、财富等无关;同时自然引出下文内容,幸福和其他因素,如社交网络、健康和福利有关。故选F。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Take Singapore as an example. The city-state has one of the highest population densities in the world(以新加坡为例。这个城邦是世界上人口密度最高的国家之一。)”可知,上文提到了新加坡人。选项E“And its people are known for being workaholics.(新加坡人以工作狂著称。)”延续上文内容,指的是新加坡人非常热爱工作。同时引出下文“However, in a recent survey, 95 percent of people said they were either very happy or quite happy.(然而,在最近的一项调查中,95%的人说他们要么非常幸福要么相当幸福。)”指出,虽然他们是工作狂,他们却非常幸福。故选E。

From Conflict to Understanding: Electronic Devices at Home
Since entering senior high school, many students have argued with their parents about electronic devices. The main reason is that parents worry our eyesight and study may be affected, while we think phones and computers help us relax and find information.
To solve this problem, we should first talk calmly with our parents instead of shouting. We can also make a reasonable plan, such as using devices only after finishing homework. Besides, keeping phones away during meals and bedtime shows our self-control.
If both sides show understanding, conflicts will turn into trust.

第二节(满分 25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage-I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.

3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

Paragraph 1
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer.
Paragraph 2
The video was posted the Monday before Halloween.
【答案】Paragraph 1
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer. Dad was summoned – less, it seemed, in expectation of practical help than to make sure he didn’t miss out on the spectacle. I heard him propose calling the fire department. “Stay tuned,” said Mom; she’d mentioned she was going to upload the video to Facebook, but it was only then I realized she’d been filming the whole time. The video cuts before my rescue —Dad got me to push my head farther into the pumpkin so Mom could reach in and undo the rubber band round my ponytail. I emerged with squash-conditioned hair, a sore chin and my nose plugged with pulp.
Paragraph 2
The video was posted the Monday before Halloween. By the end of that day, it had over 1,000 views. People asked Mom to put it on YouTube, and by Wednesday morning we were getting 5:00 am calls from TV breakfast shows and then the international media – the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. When I went on a youth camp, I was recognized by children I’d never met. The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity. Passersby and trick-or-treaters would knock and ask, “Which is Rachel’s pumpkin?” before taking selfies with it.
