My first exposure (接触) to Chinese culture came totally by chance. One day, I entered my grandfather’s personal library and took a book named Tao Te Ching from one of the shelves. As an 8-year-old, the book’s content completely confused me, but it provided me with an early connection to a beautiful and great philosophical (哲学的) tradition that still influences me today. Around this time, I also came across several cartoons heavily inspired by traditional Chinese culture and martial arts such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat. Both cartoons describe beautiful landscapes and buildings similar to those found in classical Chinese paintings. This further developed my love of the rich and beautiful culture. At school I began studying Chinese. My interest in the language developed early on, combining my love of travelling with my love of meeting new people. Later on, my interest in the language developed into exploring widespread Chinese culture. I wanted to challenge myself in a totally new linguistic (语言的) landscape and listen to the lives and stories of others in their own language. I have been lucky enough to have lived in China for around three years. I loved every second I spent there and there is never a shortage of things to see and do, people to meet, and foods to enjoy. It is safe to say that my journey to studying Chinese has only just begun and these first steps are only a drop in the ocean of lifelong learning, just as the Chinese philosopher Laozi says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” 4. How does the author like the book Tao Te Ching? A. It encourages him to go to the library. B. It improves his behavior and habits. C. It has a long-lasting influence on him. D. It makes him know Chinese society better. 5. What makes the author more interested in Chinese culture? A. Watching some cartoons. B. Admiring Chinese paintings. C. Living abroad for long. D. Cooking Chinese food. 6. What can we learn from paragraph 3? A. Chinese culture differs greatly from others’. B. Travelling takes up much of the author’s time. C. It’s easy for the author to get on well with others. D. The author learns languages in real surroundings. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. My Grandpa’s Influence on Me B. My Exploration of Chinese Culture C. My Travel Experience in China D. My Exposure to Tao Te Ching C Sitting at your desk all day may put you at greater risk of heart disease — even if you work out in your spare time, according to new research. “Our findings really emphasize the importance of avoiding long-time sitting whether or not you’re physically active,” said first study author Dr. Ezim Ajufo, a cardiology (心脏病学) fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. And as Dr. Keith Diaz, an associate professor of behavioral medicine who was not involved in the research, said, “While there is a general understanding that sitting too much is likely bad for your health, there’s a need for more research to understand the exact risks and the guidelines for what qualifies as too much sitting.” Researchers looked at data from nearly 90,000 people who wore an accelerometer (加速度计) for a week and compared their sedentary and active time with later diagnoses of conditions like stroke, heart attack and heart failure in later years. Not only was more sedentary time associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, but the data was able to show a general guideline for what might count as too much sitting, according to the study. If you sit in an office all day and commute to and from work, those ten and a half hours of sitting can add up quickly. The important thing is to add movement into your day in a way that makes sense for you and your schedule, Diaz added. He recommended getting up and walking for just a few minutes every half hour to hour or when you finish one task before moving to the next. “Sometimes we think we can completely make up for some of the unhealthy behaviors we have by going out and going for a run. Unfortunately, the data suggested a good workout at the end of the day won’t necessarily solve the problems caused by long periods of sitting,” Ajufo said. “But don’t be disheartened. It still benefits people in so many ways. You’re still better off than the person who sits all day and doesn’t play sports,” Diaz said. 8. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A. Sitting too much increases the risk of heart disease. B. We have clear rules for how much sitting is too much. C. The exact risks of long-time sitting have been clearly defined. D. There’s no need to study more about the bad effects of long-time sitting. 9. How did researchers conduct the study? A. By studying data from the patients in Boston. B. By tracking the diet and lifestyle of almost 90,000 people. C. By analyzing data from people wearing accelerometers. D. By surveying the exercise frequency of those with heart disease. 10. What does the underlined word “It” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Taking breaks. B. Great exercise. C. Prolonged sitting. D. Going out of the door. 11. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Developing practical plans to improve health. B. Investigating various methods of preventing heart disease. C. Exposing the risk of long-time sitting and offering suggestions. D. Explaining the relationship between regular exercise and health. D When the food we order at a restaurant arrives, the first thing most of us want to do is enjoy it right away. But for every person who just wants to eat their meal, there’s another who insists on taking at least five photos of their food to share on social media. While this may seem like a recent phenomenon, “foodtography” has been around for longer than one would expect. Take US photographer Irving Penn (1917—2009) for example. In 1947, Vogue magazine published a series of food shots taken by Penn. Looking at the carefully placed salad or the series of cakes on stands, it would be easy to think Penn’s 73-year-old photos were taken just last week. Penn’s efforts aside, it seems that social media is behind the recent rise of foodtography. Today, if a social media star with thousands of followers posts just one delicious-looking food picture and mentions where it was taken, it can lead to hundreds of new customers for the restaurant or cafe. One such star is Clerkenwell Boy, based in London, whose Instagram account is followed by over 100,000 people. Yet with popularity, the social media star tries to use his influence for good by encouraging people not to waste food. Research carried out earlier this year by UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s, published in The Guardian found that 55 percent of the 18 to 34-year-olds it surveyed were more likely to “try unusual recipes to create Instagram-friendly dishes” than others, leading to increased food waste. “I hate it like a huge pile of seven burgers photographed just for likes. Are they going to just throw that away now?” Clerkenwell Boy told The Guardian. So while it’s fun to share photos of delicious dishes with your friends, just remember the most important thing: Don’t forget to eat your meal afterwards. 12. The author introduces the topic by ______. A. describing a funny scene B. showing two different practices C. comparing two opposite opinions D. sharing an unforgettable experience 13. What is the purpose of mentioning Irving Penn’s work in the text? A. To prove that food photography is a recent trend. B. To illustrate the long history of food photography. C. To criticize the waste caused by social media. D. To demonstrate the artistic value of food photos. 14. According to the text, what is the main reason for the recent rise of foodtography? A. The efforts by Penn. B. The intention to show off. C. The influence of social media. D. The attraction of delicious food. 15. What can be inferred from paragraph 4? A. Many people are used to ordering too much food in the restaurant. B. Posting food photos on social media just for likes may cause food waste. C. Popular stars should take responsibility for what they post on social media. D. Trying special recipes to create attractive dishes is preferred by most teenagers. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Imagine you buy a new shirt and do not intend to buy a new jacket.
