Ben: I get very angry over small things, such as when someone borrows my pen without asking. I often shout at my classmates and even threw my textbook on the floor last week. After these outbursts (爆发), I feel guilty but I don’t know how to control myself.
Cindy: I moved to this school only two months ago. I eat lunch alone every day and sit quietly in class without talking to anyone. I see other students laughing together, but I don’t know how to join them. I miss my old friends a lot.
David: I stay up late playing online games every night. I often forget to do my homework and lie to my teachers about it. I also spend most of my pocket money on game items instead of saving it for school supplies.

D.You can join our school’s ‘Buddy Program’ where older students help new students make friends. Also, try to smile and say ‘hello’ to at least one classmate every day. Remember, everyone feels shy at first—you are not alone.
E. It is normal to feel upset sometimes, but shouting and throwing things can hurt others and yourself. When you feel angry, try counting to ten or walking away from the situation. You can also come to my office and use our ‘calm-down corner’ with soft pillows and stress balls.
F. Spend less time on games and more time on your studies. Make a weekly budget for your money and stick to it. Think about the long-term results of your actions-good habits today will benefit you tomorrow.

The Teen Brain: 6 Facts You Should Know
Did you know your brain goes through big changes during your teenage years? Here are 6 key facts to help you understand yourself better.
1 Your teenage years are important for brain development. The brain keeps developing until your mid-to-late 20s. The prefrontal cortex (前额叶) is one of the last parts to develop. It helps with planning and making good decisions.
2 Social experiences shape your brain. Brain areas for social skills become more active, making you care more about friends and peer groups. So you may take risks — like joining a new club (positive) or doing dangerous things (negative) — because social rewards may outweigh (比……更重要) the results.
3 Your brain is ready to learn and adapt (适应). It’s very adaptable. You may enjoy taking challenging classes, exercising, or doing creative activities like art or music. These activities all strengthen brain pathways and speed up growth.
4 Stress affects teens differently than adults. Because your brain is still developing, you may be more likely to get anxiety and depression. You can learn to spot what stresses you and find ways to deal with it.
5 Most teens don’t get enough sleep. Melatonin (褪黑素) stays high later at night and drops later in the morning, so you naturally stay up late and struggle to wake early. Lack of sleep hurts attention, self-control, and school performance.
6 Mental illnesses may first appear during the teen years. With rapid changes in the brain, body, and emotions, many disorders like depression (抑郁症) and eating disorders (失调) often appear at this time.
A.Go to bed late and find it hard to get up in the morning.
B.Make decisions quickly without thinking them through.
C.Be more easily influenced by stress than grown-ups.
D.Get pleasure from various activities that test abilities.
E.Experience rapid physical and emotional changes.
F.Take risks to gain acceptance from peers.
【答案】1.B 2.F 3.D 4.C 5.A 6.E
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了关于青少年大脑发育的七个关键事实,解释了青少年特定行为背后的生理和心理原因。
【详解】
1.根据“The prefrontal cortex is one of the last parts to develop. It helps with planning and making good decisions.(前额叶是最后发育的部分之一。它有助于计划和做出正确的决定。)”可推知,因该区域未发育成熟,青少年做决定时可能缺乏深思熟虑。
2.根据“So you may take risks... because social rewards may outweigh the results.(所以你可能会冒险……因为社会回报可能比结果更重要。)”可推知,青少年为了获得同伴认可愿意冒险。
3.根据“You may enjoy taking challenging classes, exercising, or doing creative activities like art or music.(你可能喜欢上具有挑战性的课程、锻炼或从事艺术或音乐等创造性活动。)”可推知,青少年能从测试能力的各种活动中获得乐趣。
4.根据“Stress affects teens differently than adults. Because your brain is still developing, you may be more likely to get anxiety and depression.(压力对青少年的影响与成年人不同。因为你的大脑仍在发育,你可能更容易患上焦虑症和抑郁症。)”可推知,青少年比成年人更容易受压力影响。
5.根据“so you naturally stay up late and struggle to wake early.(所以你自然会晚睡且难以早起。)”可推知,青少年习惯晚睡且早晨起床困难。
6.根据“With rapid changes in the brain, body, and emotions...(随着大脑、身体和情绪的迅速变化……)”可推知,青少年经历快速的身心及情绪变化。

Emma: I am afraid of speaking in front of the class. Whenever the teacher calls my name, my heart beats fast and my hands start to shake. I give wrong answers even when I know the correct ones because I am too nervous to think clearly.
The Counsellor’s Advice
A.You need to set a regular sleep schedule and turn off all electronic devices at least one hour before bed. Try to finish your homework right after school instead of late at night. Remember that honesty is always better than making excuses.
B.Try taking three deep breaths before you answer any question in class. Practice speaking aloud at home in front of a mirror. Start by raising your hand to answer easier questions, and build your confidence step by step.
C. Your body is telling you that something is wrong. Make sure you eat three meals a day, even if you are not hungry. Drink enough water and do light exercise like walking. If the headaches continue, please visit the school nurse.
Task: Match each student with the counsellor’s advice that best solves their main problems. Write the correct letter(A-P) in each blank. One piece of advice will NOT be used.
1. Amy: 1 2. Ben: 2 3. Cindy: 3 4. David: 4 5. Emma: 5
