Known as the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics," this award is given every four years to outstanding mathematicians under 40. Wang Hong is not only the first Chinese citizen to win this prize but also the third woman in its 90-year history to receive this great honor.
Wang Hong's journey in mathematical exploration is quite special. Born in Guilin, Guangxi, in 1991, she had a strong interest in math from a young age. Over the past years, China has achieved excellent development, and its high-speed rail system stands out as clear proof(证明). On December 26, 2025, three new high-speed rail lines — Xi'an-Yan'an, Wuhan-Yichang and Hangzhou-Quzhou — started services. With these new lines, China's total operating high-speed rail mileage(里程)has passed 50,000 kilometres, which is more than the total length of all high-speed rail lines in the rest of the world combined.
Today, the high-speed rail network covers 97% of Chinese cities with a population of over 500,000, completely changing people's travel experience. Travelling between cities within 500 kilometres takes only one to two hours, and a 1,000-kilometre journey takes about four hours. An average of nearly 10 million passengers take high-speed rail every day. This is a far cry from the past, when buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache and the average train speed was only about 60 kilometres per hour.
High-speed rail now connects big cities with medium and small towns, driving local tourism and industries. For example, thanks in large part to the Hangzhou-Changsha high-speed rail, Jiangxi Province — located between the two cities — saw a huge increase of 620 million tourists in ten years. Moreover, China has shared its technology and experience with over 40 countries, working together on projects. From importing(引进)technology to becoming a global leader, China's high-speed rail is a proud symbol of the country's progress, and faster maglev(磁悬浮)trains are being studied for even better development in the future.
21. Why are the three new lines mentioned?
A. For showing China's high-speed rail system is developing very fast
B. For showing how high-speed rail changes people's daily life
C. For showing the governments do to develop the high-speed rail
22. What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. China's long high-speed rail mileage
B. Nearly 10 million passengers taking high-speed rail every day
C. The fast travel brought by high-speed rail
23. What does the underlined phrase "a far cry from" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Similar to. B. Different from. C. Close to
24. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Maglev trains have been widely used in China.
B. Most of China's high-speed rail lines only connect big cities.
C. Many countries learn from China's high-speed rail technology.
25. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The benefits of developing high-speed rail.
B. The history of China's high-speed rail technology.
C. The achievements and influences of China's high-speed rail.

Seeing changes in China
It was a warm spring day in 2021. Chen Beier, a reporter and TV host from Hong Kong, travelled to a small village called Atule'er. The village lies on an 800-metre-high cliff. People can only reach it by climbing a steel(钢的)ladder with 2,556 steps. It is really dangerous.
Chen did not go there for fun or adventure(冒险). She went to make a documentary(纪录片)called No Poverty Land.
In February 2021, China reached an important goal. It got rid of poverty. Many people found it hard to believe because there were once lots of poor villages. In order to show the real living conditions of the people, Chen set out to make No Poverty Land. Her journey was difficult. On the way up the ladder, she felt very tired. She was afraid of heights too. The villagers asked her to give up, but she kept climbing.
The steel ladder has only been used for six years. Before that, villagers used a dangerous rattan(藤的)ladder. The government also built new houses for villagers at the foot of the mountain.
The documentary lets people clearly see the great improvements in poor areas. China has changed greatly. What Chen did shows us a lesson: instead of only talking about changes, we should show people the truth with our own eyes.

At school, teachers used to teach only with a blackboard and chalk, but now we have smart classrooms and online lessons. As for shopping, people used to go to crowded markets, but now we can buy almost everything online and get it the next day.
I feel lucky and proud to live in such a rapidly developing country. These changes have made our lives easier, more colourful and more comfortable. I believe our life will become even better in the future, and I will study hard to make my own contribution to it.
