Thanks to technology, the way we communicate with others has greatly changed. How do you feel about it? Would you prefer to live in a world with or without mobile phones?
I ordered some snacks on my phone the other afternoon. Once I got home from work that evening, I saw they were already at my door. So prompt! Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and did things without mobile phones? Take the post for example. Before phones, if you wanted to keep in touch with someone far away, you needed to send them a letter in the mail. When my mom was in primary school, she used to do this with her “pen pal”. A pen pal is a name for a person you keep in touch with mainly through postal mail. My mom would write to her pen pal every few months, and then, after a little while, her pen pal would write back. Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters by post felt so slow to people. It became known as “snail mail”!
What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My dad said that in the 1970s, there used to be message boards at some airports. If you needed to exit (离开) the airport and wanted to leave a message for a friend who would be arriving later, you could write them a message and stick it on the message board. Then, your friend could go check the board later and see what you wrote to them!
21. What does the underlined word “prompt” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Wisely. B. Politely. C. Quickly. D. Helpfully.

A. By talking on phones. B. By mailing letters.
C. By visiting every few months. D. By writing diaries.

A. To make fun of people still sending letters. B. To say that postal mail was famous.
C. To say that email was a common thing. D. To say that postal mail was very slow.
24. Where could people leave messages at some airports in the 1970s?
A. On the message boards. B. At the information desk.
C. On the door of the exit. D. On the boarding gate of the plane.
25 What is the story mainly about?
A. How fast it is to buy things nowadays. B. How people kept in touch before.
C. The importance of communication. D. Ways of making friends in the past.

This umbrella pot has a flowerpot at the bottom. If you put your wet umbrella in the umbrella pot, the water falls into the flowerpot. Yes, you can grow a plant by putting an umbrella in this pot. Of course, please give your plant water when it doesn’t rain for a long time.

In northern Scotland, there is a long, deep lake called Loch Ness. More than 200 meters deep, it is the largest lake in the UK. People say a big monster (怪兽) lives in its dark, cold waters. It weighs more than 1,000 kilos and is at least 10 meters long. Some people say it has a head like a horse. Others say it looks like a snake. Many people travel to Loch Ness to look for this strange monster, but only a few people have seen it.
The Loch Ness Monster remains a mystery. People have made up so many stories about it, so it has become a famous legend (传说). The first story about the monster in Loch Ness was told more than 500 years ago, but it spread widely only in the twentieth century. In 1933, a couple reported that they saw a big monster in the middle of the lake. After that, a number of people said that they had seen a monster in Loch Ness. Several people had taken photos, but at least one of them was a hoax. They were just trying to catch people’s eyes. During the 1960s, a team was formed to look for the monster. They took many photos and made movies, but they were never able to find a monster.
There is no real fact that a monster lives in Loch Ness, but there is also no fact that one doesn’t live. One thing is true about Loch Ness: there are a lot of tourists there.

①Music helps us exercise—but why? Experts say there are two main reasons.
②The first is simple: Music takes our minds off exercise. When we listen to our favorite songs, our brain pays more attention to the music. For example, after 20 minutes of running, our body might be tired. But we may not feel it at once because we are listening to music. So we can exercise a little longer.
③Music also makes us want to move. When we hear exciting music, we naturally start to move to the beat. A lively and cheerful song also puts us in a happy mood, giving us more energy. But the music shouldn’t be too fast. Generally, songs in the range of 120—140 beats per minute (BPM) are the best.
④But is that all? Recently, a new study by scientist Tom Fritz found something more. He asked people to exercise in two ways: one time they exercised while listening to music, and the other time they exercised on special machines that let them make music while they moved. In the end, most people felt less tired when they made their own music. So, when you exercise and make music with others, it seems easier.
⑤Fritz thinks it’s because people had more control. They could create the beat themselves and make it go faster and slower. Also, it was a fun group activity. Making music together made exercise seem easier and more enjoyable.
36. The phrase “takes our mind off” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ________.
A. lets us enjoy B. makes us think about
C. helps us remember D. stops us thinking about
37. Jack is picking a song to listen to while exercising. Which of the following would be his best choice?
A. A lively pop song from his favorite band. B. A piece of piano music which helps him relax.
C. A soft and slow song which comforts his mind. D. A rock song with 160 BPM to make him run faster.
38. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The faster the music is, the more energy it will bring.
B. Listening to music is the best way to make exercise easy.
C. The new study shows that all people feel less tired when making their own music.
D. The best exercise music usually has the power to make people happy and energetic.
39. Which of the following is most likely to be the correct structure of this passage?
A. ①/②③④/⑤ B. ①/②③/④⑤ C. ①/②③④⑤ D. ①②/③④⑤
40. What can be the best title for this passage?
A. The best songs for running. B. Exercise on a special machine.

25. What is the story mainly about?
A. How fast it is to buy things nowadays. B. How people kept in touch before.
C. The importance of communication. D. Ways of making friends in the past.

In northern Scotland, there is a long, deep lake called Loch Ness. More than 200 meters deep, it is the largest lake in the UK. People say a big monster (怪兽) lives in its dark, cold waters.

A. The faster the music is, the more energy it will bring.
B. Listening to music is the best way to make exercise easy.
C. The new study shows that all people feel less tired when making their own music.
D. The best exercise music usually has the power to make people happy and energetic.

Some bright sparks (火花) light up the night sky, creating a fantastic rain of flowers. This exciting performance is Striking Iron Flower (打铁花). It is a traditional folk art form, and it has been around for more than 1,000 years in China. It is deeply rooted (根植) in traditional Chinese culture.
Striking Iron Flower usually takes place during important festivals such as the Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival. People get together to watch this wonderful performance. The blooming (盛放的) sparks are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Striking Iron Flower is a highly skilled performance. To begin with, the performers put waste iron in a big oven. Then, they heat the iron at a very high temperature until it becomes liquid (液体). Finally, they use special tools to splash (泼洒) the liquid iron into the air. When the liquid iron meets the cold air, it will turn into beautiful sparks. A performer needs to have strong arms, good skills and a lot of courage. It shows the creativity of Chinese working people.
