Unit 5 Working the Land(Reading and Thinking)
Unit 5 Working the Land(Reading and Thinking)

Li Hengfang is a distinguished Chinese agricultural scientist, who has spent decades devoting herself to improving grain production in poor rural areas. Born in 1965, she grew up in a countryside family and witnessed how hunger troubled local villagers in her childhood. That experience planted in her heart a strong wish: to help farmers get good harvests.
After graduating from agricultural university, she refused well‑paid city jobs and returned to the countryside. She worked together with local farmers in fields day after day, doing field observation and crop experiments. Many experiments ended in failure, but she never gave up. She adjusted planting methods and tested new crop varieties year after year.
Gradually, her hard work paid off. The improved crop varieties she developed greatly boosted output. Many villages got rid of food shortage. Besides technical research, she also offered free training courses for local farmers, teaching them practical planting skills.
Li Hengfang seldom appears in public media. She cares little about fame or prizes. “My greatest prize is seeing farmers have good harvests and live a better life,” she often says. Her story shows that true achievement lies in sticking to one’s dream and serving ordinary people. Her spirit encourages more young people to take up agriculture‑related careers.
What made Li Hengfang decide to work for rural agriculture?
A. The high income of agricultural work.
B. Her childhood experience of seeing villagers suffer hunger.
C. Media reports about scientists.
D. Encouragement from her university teachers.
What does the underlined phrase “paid off” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Brought good results.
B. Cost lots of money.
C. Came to an end.
D. Got into trouble.

D. She finished all her experiments without any failures.
What is the main idea of the passage?
