I must admit I did not buy 40 books this year. At a nearby bookshop I paid for a membership card that allows me to borrow two or three books at a time and keep them for a month.
Owning a book has its advantages, such as allowing you to make notes to your heart’s content, and you can reread it anytime you want, but borrowing holds advantages, too. One consideration is space, and in my city where a foot of land is worth an inch of gold, this issue speaks volumes when it comes to owning books.
You want to reread a book, but just look at how many books there are on your bookshelf that you haven’t finished reading even once. People tend to finish books they borrow more quickly than the ones they own, mainly because of the pressure of a deadline. Several times during the year I stayed up late to finish a book the night before the due date. I finished about 10 more books that way.
It is increasingly difficult to choose a good book because there are simply so many out there. Even if you choose only from a narrow area of interest, singling out 40 is challenging. Book reviews and the comments readers leave on the websites of online bookstores can be helpful in this regard.
But you cannot judge a book by its review. What I do is try to find and borrow the books from the bookshop. Some are like fast food: you leaf through the pages and finish them in a flash. Some are strong in certain chapters but weak in others. Some have titles that scream at you but lack substance.
I cut my losses by perusing (精读) on the spot or borrowing. Of the 40 I read from cover to cover, I bought four I thought were worth keeping. Strangely, I had not really set out to read those four books but happened upon them in the bookshop. That unpredictability is one of the exciting parts of this reading adventure.
24. What do the underlined words “speaks volumes” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Needs improvement. B. Exists for long. C. Creates confusion. D. Matters a lot.
25. What is paragraph 3 mainly focused on?
A. The importance of rereading. B. An introduction to quick reading.
C. The difficulties of finishing a book. D. The advantage of borrowing a book.
26. What can we learn from the text?
A. The author bought 40 books this year.
B. The four books he bought were planned in advance.
C. Reviews are helpful but cannot decide a book’s real value.
D. Most borrowed books are fast-food style and not worth reading.
27. What is exciting about the author’s experience in the bookshop?
A. He came across some nice books unexpectedly.
B. He built up the habit of perusing on the spot.
C. He found some books with great titles.
D. He read 40 books from cover to cover.
D 25. D 26. C 27. A

根据第二段“One consideration is space, and in my city where a foot of land is worth an inch of gold, this issue speaks volumes when it comes to owning books.(要考虑的一点是空间,在我这座寸土寸金的城市,对于藏书这件事来说,这个问题speaks volumes)”可知,城市住房珍贵,空间问题对于买书藏书来说十分关键,speaks volumes含义为“意义重大、很重要”,与“Matters a lot”意思相近。
根据第三段“People tend to finish books they borrow more quickly than the ones they own, mainly because of the pressure of a deadline.(人们读完借来的书往往比读完自己拥有的书更快,主要是因为归还期限带来的压力)”可知,本段重点讲述借书的好处:归还期限会督促人更快读完书籍。
根据第四段“Book reviews and the comments readers leave on the websites of online bookstores can be helpful in this regard.(书评以及读者在网上书店网站留下的评论在这方面会有所帮助)”以及第五段“But you cannot judge a book by its review. (但你不能仅凭书评评判一本书)”可知,书评有参考价值,但不能决定一本书的真实价值。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Strangely, I had not really set out to read those four books but happened upon them in the bookshop. That unpredictability is one of the exciting parts of this reading adventure.(奇怪的是,我原本并没有真正打算去读那四本书,而是在书店偶然碰到了它们。这种不可预知性是这场阅读奇遇令人兴奋的地方之一)”可知,作者阅读经历中令人欣喜的是会意外邂逅不错的书籍。

When was the last time you went out for a Thai meal, got items from the import section of a supermarket, or watched a foreign film? Many of us consume culturally cued (暗示的) offerings, which facilitate intercultural interactions. Then, what drives people to interact with different cultures through consumption?
We conducted a study recently, consisting of 31 interviews with locally-born and migrant residents of a multicultural city. Our study reveals that three rather different types of motivations drive people to consume culturally cued offerings. We title them integrative, instrumental and mundane motivations.
People driven by integrative motivations usually want to bring a contribution to the well-being of mankind, or to culturally different groups. They use consumption as a way to materialise and display these values. For example, one of our participants told us that through purchasing items from a Japanese store, he is “supporting that culture and that trade” and engages in “a long chain of humanity”.
People can also use culturally cued consumption because of an interest in self-development and knowledge acquisition. These people are driven by instrumental motivations. For example, one participant told their Chinese friends in order to improve their language skills in advance of a planned move to China. These motivations have a utilitarian (功利的) and self-centred nature.
Not all people who choose culturally cued offerings seek some form of intercultural interaction. Some participants in our study simply preferred them due to their convenience. For example, they may eat dishes that are typical of other cultures, like pizzas, because they are widely available. Others appreciate culturally cued experiences simply as entertainment. For example, one may attend a Chinese New Year celebration purely as an opportunity for enjoyment. These mundane motivations demonstrate that the consumption of culturally cued products is not always a mark of cultural openness.
The findings of our study are particularly relevant in the context of the current pandemic (流行病), when public products and media may be the most accessible means people have to continue engaging with intercultural experiences. Such interactions may become even more important if we are to ensure that the growing appeal of “localism” does not cut us off from the benefits of intercultural learning and engagement.
28. Which of the following can best describe people driven by integrative motivations?
A. Creative. B. Selfless. C. Demanding. D. Optimistic.
29. Which activities may people driven by instrumental motivations participate in?
A. Those unfamiliar to them.
B. Those that can help them relax.
C. Those for the good of all mankind.
D. Those that can bring them individual benefits.
30. What may drive people to buy imported products out of convenience?
A. Mundane motivations. B. Integrative motivations. C. Instrumental motivations. D. Economic motivations.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The limitation of the study. B. The significance of the study.
C. A suggestion for future studies. D. A possible reason for study findings.
B 29. D 30. A 31. B

When we hear the word “art”, most of us probably think of ancient sculptures or classic ink paintings in museums. Few of us would immediately think of dancing lights in the dark. Yet for American artist Janet Echelman, light itself has become her material. Her works glow at night like colourful clouds floating in the air. At one of her exhibitions in Vancouver, visitors could do much more than just admire the works — by pointing their phones at them, they could change the colours and patterns as they wished. Such works are certainly new and exciting, but they also lead us to a question worth thinking about: should we still call this art?
In fact, art and technology were never meant to be strangers. For thousands of years, painters and sculptors kept using the best tools they could find to express their ideas. It is just that people like Michelangelo were remembered as “artists”, not “technicians”. As a result, people gradually believed that art and technology belonged to two different worlds.
That belief, however, is now changing. Technology has not only changed how art is made, but also who can enjoy it. A good example is “Along the River During the Qingming Festival,” a five-metre-long painting from China’s Song Dynasty. Because the original is so old that it is seldom shown to the public, visitors once had to wait in line for up to six hours, only to be allowed a few minutes in front of it. Now, a digital version of the painting has reached millions of people. With 3D animation, the people in the painting walk and talk, and the scenes along the river slowly change from daytime to night.
What is more, ordinary people can now take part in creating art. With digital tools at hand, anyone with an idea can have a try, producing digital paintings and videos that earlier generations could hardly imagine.
However, easier creation also brings new problems. With so much art of so many kinds being produced, people start to doubt its quality. Can a slow-motion video of someone cutting a tomato really be called “art”? Also, as machines do more creative work, the question of who the “artist” is becomes less clear. In one surprising project, researchers put Rembrandt’s techniques and data into a computer, and a 3D printer produced a new “Rembrandt painting” — 347 years after the great painter died. If a machine can paint like a great artist, what is left for the artist?
Nobody knows where technology will take art. But with so many people exploring new possibilities, one thing is certain: the future of art will be full of surprises.
32. What can visitors do with Janet Echelman’s works in Vancouver?
A. Paint pictures of clouds in the air.
B. Change their colours and patterns with phones.
C. Touch them to change their shapes.
D. Watch them change with the weather.
33. Why does the author mention “Along the River During the Qingming Festival?”
A. To show Chinese paintings are more popular than Western ones.
B. To explain why old paintings are seldom on show.
C. To prove technology has made art easier for people to enjoy.
D. To advise visitors to spend more time in front of paintings.
34. What does the author think of art created with technology?
A. It has made art worse and should be stopped.
B. It brings both exciting changes and worrying questions.
C. It proves machines will replace human artists soon.
D. It matters little to the future of traditional art.
35. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Death of Traditional Art B. Technology: An Artist’s New Tool
C. Art Meets Technology: A Changing World D. Rembrandt Reborn Through 3D Printing
B 33. C 34. B 35. C
根据第一段“At one of her exhibitions in Vancouver, visitors could do much more than just admire the works — by pointing their phones at them, they could change the colours and patterns as they wished.(在她于温哥华举办的一场展览上,参观者不仅仅可以欣赏作品——他们将手机对准作品,可以按照自己的意愿改变作品的颜色和图案)”可知,参观者可以用手机改变作品的颜色与图案。
根据第三段“That belief, however, is now changing. Technology has not only changed how art is made, but also who can enjoy it.(然而这种观念正在改变。科技不仅改变了艺术的创作方式,也改变了能够欣赏艺术的人群)”以及“Because the original is so old that it is seldom shown to the public, visitors once had to wait in line for up to six hours, only to be allowed a few minutes in front of it. Now, a digital version of the painting has reached millions of people.(由于原作年代久远,很少向公众展示,参观者曾经不得不排队等候长达六个小时,只允许在它面前待几分钟。如今,这幅画作的数字版本已经被数百万人观赏)”可推知,作者列举《清明上河图》的例子,是为证明科技让人们欣赏艺术变得更加容易。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“What is more, ordinary people can now take part in creating art.(此外,普通人如今也可以参与艺术创作)”和第五段“However, easier creation also brings new problems. With so much art of so many kinds being produced, people start to doubt its quality.(然而,创作门槛降低也带来了新问题。海量各式各样的艺术作品被产出,人们开始质疑作品的质量)”、“If a machine can paint like a great artist, what is left for the artist?(如果一台机器能像伟大的艺术家一样画画,那么艺术家还剩下什么?)”
通读全文,第一段最后一句“Such works are certainly new and exciting, but they also lead us to a question worth thinking about: should we still call this art?(这些作品无疑是新颖而令人兴奋的,但它们也让我们思考一个值得思考的问题:我们还应该称之为艺术吗?)” But with so many people exploring new possibilities, one thing is certain: the future of art will be full of surprises.(没有人知道技术将把艺术带向何方。但随着这么多人探索新的可能性,有一件事是肯定的:艺术的未来将充满惊喜。)”指出未来科技会给艺术带来新的惊喜,全文围绕艺术与科技的交融带来变化展开,C选项“艺术遇见科技:一个正在改变的世界”完整覆盖文章核心主题。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It used to be simple: if you were stuck on homework, you went to a tutor or looked through a textbook. Today, many students admit their first instinct (本能) is to open short-video apps. ____36____ And here’s the catch: while short-form video makes information accessible, are students actually learning or just scrolling (滚屏)?
Students aren’t choosing short videos to study by accident; it fits the way their brains are wired in today’s world. Studies suggest the average attention span has dropped to around 8-12 seconds. Quick videos match that rhythm. Instead of sitting through a 40-minute lecture, students can learn one concept or definition in a minute. Short videos also turn idle time, like waiting for the bus, into learning opportunities. ____37____ However, for every upside, there’s a hidden drawback that students often feel but don’t always recognize. Short videos sometimes oversimplify — students may remember a “fun fact” but struggle to apply it in problem-solving. Constant exposure to fast content trains the brain to expect stimulation, making complex reading or full lectures harder to sit through. ____38____ Students can end up overwhelmed, recalling bits of many topics but mastering none.
Here’s where it gets tricky. Short-video platforms aren’t built for studying; they’re built for endless scrolling. That means students who go in looking for a “quick explainer” often end up an hour deep into unrelated content. ____39____ Students describe feeling “busy” while scrolling through study content, but later realize they didn’t remember much.
____40____ The reality is, it’s both. Short-form content is a tool, not a replacement. Students who use it as a supplement to traditional learning gain the best of both worlds: quick tips and deeper practice. Those who depend only on it often face burnout, divided attention, or surface-level understanding.
A. So, is short-form video helping or hurting?
B. This makes video-learning fit easily into daily life.
C. Many creators make money by posting educational clips.
D. To them, such videos don’t just entertain but feel like learning.
E. Short videos make students unable to finish homework within fixed time.
F. Besides, too many short videos, brief as they are, can cause information overload.
G. This unclear line between entertainment and education makes it harder to manage time.
D 37. B 38. F 39. G 40. A

可知,本空要说娱乐与教育的界限模糊带来的时间管理问题,G选项“This unclear line between entertainment and education makes it harder to manage time. 能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“This unclear line between entertainment and education”指代上文的“looking for a ‘quick explainer’ often end up an hour deep into unrelated content”,且该选项中的“harder to manage time”与下文的“feeling ‘busy’ while scrolling through study content, but later realize they didn’t remember much”相呼应,表示时间管理失控导致学习效率低下。
由下文“The reality is, it’s both. Short-form content is a tool, not a replacement. (现实是,两者兼而有之。短视频内容是一种工具,而非替代品。)”可知,本空要说提出短视频是帮助还是伤害的问题,A选项“So, is short-form video helping or hurting? (那么,短视频是在帮助还是在伤害?)”能引出下文,符合题意,该选项以设问的方式总结全文争论,且该选项中的“helping or hurting”与下文的“it’s both”形成直接回应,表示答案不是非黑即白,而是取决于使用方式。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my mother told me she was going to marry David, I felt as if the ground beneath me had shifted. I was seventeen — old enough to understand that she deserved happiness after my father left us, but not old enough to accept a stranger sitting in my father’s chair.
David was a quiet, balding man who taught history at a local college. He had a daughter, Emily. They moved into our house on a rainy Saturday in March. I stayed in my room with my headphones on, pretending not to hear my mother calling me down to help.
The first weeks were choking. David tried too hard. Emily followed me around like a lost puppy, desperate for approval. I gave them nothing. I answered in monosyllables and escaped to my room at every opportunity. My mother’s eyes grew sadder each day, but I told myself she had chosen this, not me.
One evening, I overheard David tell my mother, “He’s angry at what I represent. I can wait.” Something in his patient voice made my chest tighten. But I pushed the feeling away.
The breaking point came two weeks later. Emily knocked over my only photo of my father. The glass shattered. Without thinking, I shouted, “You don’t belong here! None of you do!” Emily burst into tears and ran out. David appeared in the doorway, his face pale. He looked at me — not with anger, but with disappointment.
That night, I could not sleep. I kept seeing Emily’s tear-streaked face and David’s silent look. For the first time, I asked myself: Was I fighting them — or my own fear of losing what I had left?

The next morning, I woke up to find a small box outside my door. Inside lay the broken pieces of my father’s photo, wrapped in tissue, with a note in Emily’s handwriting: “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to break it. I know it’s important.” I sat on the floor holding the pieces, feeling ashamed. She hadn’t followed me to annoy me — she had been trying to be my sister. I found her in her room and held out the box. “Help me fix it?” I asked. Her face lit up.
That evening, I walked into the kitchen where David was making tea and sat down across from him. “I owe you an apology,” I said. David was quiet for a while and said gently, “You’re allowed to feel what you feel.” For the first time, I saw him not as a stranger taking my father’s place, but a man building something new. Family is not a chair belonging to one person forever. It is a table that grows bigger to make room for more — and I was ready to pull up my chair.

D
