What does it mean to be British? Here, four people from various
backgrounds share their personal understanding of "Britishness"-from
everyday habits like queuing and tea drinking,to deeper ideas about identity,
history,and belonging.
Lucy Wilson,26,events manager
Britishness is about staying calm while enjoying small, shared habits.I find
it interesting how relationships develop slowly.People don't show their feelings
directly;they use gentle opinions and dry humour. There is a kind of pleasant
self-control that makes people careful about what they share.Friendliness can be
hard to notice at first, but over time, strong connections form.I love how
seriously the British take small things:making tea properly, respecting the queue,
and talking about the weather as if it's a shared responsibility.
Jon Turner,55,Impact Programme lead
I don't feel comfortable with the idea of"Britishness".Maybe that's because
my grandparents moved here from elsewhere in Europe.Or perhaps it's because I
dislike how some people use "Britishness"to exclude others and look back to a
colonial past.
Jaspreet Takhi,40,teacher
My experience as a child of immigrants is part of my idea of Britishness. For
me,being British means my two identities coexisting as one.I couldn't be
without one or the other. And that's what Britishness is:being able to live my
truth-whether that's making tea with Yorkshire teabags,or teaching my English
husband how to say Indian verbs while complaining about the weather. This
uniqueness makes me British.
Federica Stefani,33,journalist(currently applying for British citizenship)
Before I moved from Italy to the UK,"Britishness"felt like an abstract idea
to me.Words that came to my mind were politeness, calmness, queuing, the
高二年级英语科目12-3
empire,rainy weather,countryside,and a proper cup of tea.Now,after ten years
here,I understand how complex this identity is.For me,it will probably grow
around my "core"Italian and European identities, but I believe it will build up
over time.
21.What is a feature of British people according to Lucv?
A.Direct expression of emotions.
B.Sharp comments in communication.
C.Serious attention to daily habits.
D.Immediate closeness in relationships.
22.How does Jon Turner feel about the idea of "Britishness"?
A.Optimistic.B.Curious.
C.Doubtful.
D.Uncomfortable.
23.What do Jaspreet Takhi and Federica Stefani have in common?
A.They have mixed cultural identities.
B.They are first generation immigrants.
C.They can speak the Indian language
D.They are applying for British citizenship.

Deep in the mountains of Jiangxi Province,Li Xinrong holds up a freshly
collected egg for his livestream viewers. He cracks it open. The rich yellow yolk
shines."Our chickens run free in the forest,"he says.Within minutes, his eggs are
sold out.The small forest eggs reflect the rapid growth of China's forest-based
economy.
Li works at a farm in Guangchang County. Not long ago,the forests around
here produced almost no direct financial benefits."We used to call them 'sleeping
resources',"says a local villager.That is changing.The county has launched a
plan to turn its forests into a source of income-without destroying them.
Guangchang has a forest coverage rate of over 70 percent. For years, those
trees just stood there. Now,farmers grow medicinal herbs and mushrooms under
the shade of the forest canopy )They raise chickens and collect camellia
(oil.The forest provides natural temperature control,clean water,and
protection from harsh weather.
One local company grows mushrooms on hundreds of hectares of forest land.
Instead of using chemicals,it uses waste from the local lotus seed industry-
dried lotus shells-as material for growing mushrooms."Farmers used to burn
or throw away these shells,"says the company manager."Now they sell them to
us."The forest-grown mushrooms taste better and sell for four times the price of
greenhouse mushrooms.
The results are clear.By 2025,the county's forest-based economy had
高二年级英语科目12-4
reached over 2 billion yuan, raising the annual income of more than 10,000
farming families by over 3,000 yuan each."Demand is so strong that we can
hardly stay abreast,"as Li said,"so the local authorities plan to further expand
the forest-based industry. Now,the forest is no longer sleeping. It has come alive
-and so have the Guangchang people.
24.Where does Li Xinrong sell eggs?
A.In a local store.
B.In a trade fair.
C.On the internet.
D.On the street.
25.What makes"sleeping resources"come alive?
A.Rapid growth of economy.
B.Environmental destruction
C.A high rate of forest coverage.
D.Local government's proposal.
26.What can we know about the forest-grown mushrooms?
A.They need chemical fertilizers
B.They are of high economic value.
C.They are nutritious but taste bad.
D.They replace greenhouse mushrooms.
27.What does the underlined phrase "stay abreast"probably mean?
A.Keep up.
B.Stay positive.
C.Stay in touch.
D.Keep focused.
Q
Imagine wandering through a dark forest for hours, then traveling all the way
home-in a straight line.Bull ants do this every night, and scientists have long
wondered how.It turns out they use a previously unknown type of Moon compass
(指南针)一never seen before in the animal kingdom.
To figure it out,Cody Freas,a behavioral ecologist, and his colleagues
trapped bull ants the moment they left their nests. They allowed or denied the
insects the chance to observe the Moon by grouping the individuals in a clear
bottle or a black box. Then they brought them to an unfamiliar setting 200 meters
away-an abandoned basketball court-to test in which direction they traveled
home.
After comparing their separate paths, the team concluded the behavior of
ants that could see moonlight was consistent with what's called a
time-compensated(时间补偿的)lunar compass..Essentially,,the insects observe
how quickly the Moon moves to estimate the relative position of their home and
update that prediction with time.
The dynamic speed of the Moon's movement complicates this strategy. It
高二年级英语科目12-5
rises slowly, speeds up when it's at the highest point in the sky,and then slows
down as it sets.Ants could be terribly misled if they don't account for that, but the
researchers discovered the insects have an inborn sense that the Moon's speed
shifts,and they compensate for it.
The discovery makes bull ants the first known animals to navigate (
using this type of compass.Navigating with the Moon presents several
advantages.Unlike stars, which other insects use to navigate, the Moon is not
blocked by light pollution, and it can be bright enough to break through clouds.
Bull ants also have specialized eyes that allow them to see circular (
patterns of polarized moonlight spreading across the sky,so they can sense the
Moon's position,even when it's below the horizon.
Freas says the study has given him a new appreciation of the Moon as a
navigational aid."The more time you spend under the Moon,"he says,"the more
it seems like a much better helper than you originally think."
28.Which aspect of the study does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The process.
B.The purposes.
C.The background.
D.The findings.
29.What helps bull ants navigate correctly according to the text?
A.Their familiarity with the path to home.
B.Their tolerance for the Moon's movement.
C.Their independence from time compensation.
D.Their adjustment to the Moon's speed change.
30.What can be inferred from the last but one paragraph?
A.Navigating with the Moon is reliable for the bull ants
B.Bull ants'eyes are characterized by circular patterns.
C.Light pollution affects bull ants'sense of direction.
D.Bull ants can see the Moon below the horizon.
31.What does Freas think of bull ants using the Moon compass?
A.It's controversial.
B.It's challenging.
C.It's mysterious.
D.It's amazing.

New research has found that scientists studying sea level rise have been
using methods that underestimate how high the water already is.One result is that
hundreds of millions more people worldwide are already living dangerously close
to the rising ocean than previously estimated.
The study, published in Nature, shows that coastal sea levels are on average
nearly a foot higher than many global maps and models suggest. The differences
are especially large in Southeast Asia and parts of the Pacific.Scientists have
高二年级英语科目12-6
often been working from the wrong starting point when calculating what land and
populations might be affected in the future.
That matters as policymakers turn to science to understand how much land
and how many people may be affected as the world warms and oceans rise. The
new study has identified far-reaching problems in the method that researchers
often use to understand coastlines and how they might change in a warming
climate. It checked 385 other papers and found that less than 1 percent had
correctly assessed where sea levels are today.
For decades, scientists have used a satellite-based gravitational model.
However, other instruments can measure real sea level and reveal local
differences from things like currents, winds and tides, which can also influence
sea levels but are not included in the gravitational model.Scientists can most
accurately estimate sea level when both pieces of the puzzle are combined
correctly.
But the study found that hasn't been the case. Some 90 percent of the studies
relied only on the gravitational method.Another9 percent used both kinds of data
but failed to combine them properly.
It was about 10 years ago on the shores of the Mekong Delta in Southern
Vietnam that Dr.Minderhoud, the senior author of the paper, first realized there
may be a difference. He said the study shows that methods of studying sea-level
rise that seemed to work relatively well for coastlines in Europe or the United
States led to bigger gaps in other parts of the world.
Torbjorn Tornqvist,a professor at Tulane University, who was not involved
in the study, said the findings were a real "wake-up call"with wide implications.
32.Why is the research finding of great importance?
A.It helps improve technologies of measuring sea levels.
B.It has persuaded scientists to change research methods.
C.It explains why sea levels keep rising around the world.
D.It offers policymakers more reliable scientific evidence.
33.What is the big problem with the commonly used method?
A.It relies on invalid data.
B.It leaves out real local factors.
C.It overestimates the risks
D.It ignores the effect of global warming.
34.What can be inferred from Dr.Minderhoud's experience in Vietnam?
A.Local observations are less reliable than satellite data
B.Methods used in Europe may not apply well globally.
C.The Mekong Delta is the most threatened coastal area.
高二年级英语科目12-7
D.Scientists need longer time to detect sea-level changes.
35.What is the best title of the text?
A.Sea Levels are Higher than Assumed
B.Climate Change Threatens Human Survival
C.Global Warming Causes the Sea-Level Rise
D.Satellite Data Improves Research Accuracy

How to Keep a Good Conversation Going
Good conversations are not about showing off your knowledge. It is about
connecting with others.36.Here are several simple ways to keep a conversation
going smoothly.
Listen more than you speak. Many people are busy thinking about their reply
while the other person is talking.37.Instead,focus on truly understanding
what they are saying.Good listeners can pick up small details from the speaker's
words.
Ask open-ended questions.Closed questions can only be answered with "yes"
or"no".They often bring a conversation to an end.38.For example,instead
of "Do you like travelling?",you can ask "What's the most unforgettable trip
you've ever had?"
39
When people share their stories or feelings, try to give proper
feedback. You can nod or say simple words like "That sounds interesting."Do not
jump in with your own story immediately.Give them space to finish.
Know when to change the topic. If you notice that the person becomes quiet
or uncomfortable,it is time to move to another subject.40.With practice, you
will become more skilled at communicating.
A.Pay attention to others'responses
B.Open-ended questions need longer answers
C.Never push people to talk about things they dislike
D.Try not to plan your answer in advance
E.It is important to praise others often
F.You can share your opinions whenever you want
G.It takes practice to become a good talker

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?My
teenage years had been insane(错乱的,疯狂的).From schoolwork to athletics,.I
had always been running around.Everything was so difficult.
Throughout my busy teenage years I have been faced with many extreme
challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it
hadn't been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been
conquered.
Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school,I dealt with an
extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January.
In the course of my match,Ijolted(震动,摇晃)my back to the left and soon after
felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine.I knew at that difficult moment I
seriously injured my back.I was rushed off the court and my parents made an
appointment with an orthopedist(矫形外科医生)for the next morning.
I walked into the office extremely nervous and in excruciating(令人折磨的)
pain.My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed
to build up the strength.
After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an eternity
(漫长的时间),the doctor walked in to examine my X-rays.With a sorrowful face,.
the doctor looked into mine and my mother's eyes and said,"There is a 50/50
chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this year's tennis season.Lucas
broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back.My heart dropped and I felt a sadness
come over me.The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for
two and a half to three months.
高二年级英语科目12-11
Those three months were the longest three months of my life.I was so eager to
get back to practices for the season.Every day,I would think about how it was
going to be when I was fully healthy.I asked myself,"Am I going to be out of
shape?Should I even play this year?I probably won't have a successful season."
From that dreadful(糟糕的)day on,I decided that I was going to put in the
work to be back in top form and have a successful season.
Paragraph 1:
After I got the"all clear"from my orthopedist,I was going to get to work.
Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective.

Paragraph 1:
After I got the "all clear"from my orthopedist,I was going to get to work.Practices were going to start
in two weeks and I was determined to get back on the court. My hunger for success made me play and
work out for two hours even day before the season.Through practices,I would hit the gym and try to build
up the strength that I had before the injury.
Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective.I had the most successful season of my career.I made it to
the finals.Although I truly wanted to win,I knew that it was a great accomplishment for me to be in that
position even not in the first place. The injury was almost a good thing because I proved to myself that I am
capable of achieving goals that I strive for, through hard work of course. That season was by far the most
rewarding season of my career.I felt so accomplished at the end of the season.Hard work always pays off.

W:Peter,I've heard this method is connected with tomatoes. Is that true?
M:Yes,it was invented by Francesco Cirillo in the 1980s.He used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer when
studying.Since Pomodoro means "tomato"in Italian, the method got its name. But the key part isn't the
timer's shape.It's strict rules.
W:Do you mean the 25-minute rule?
M:Exactly, you divide your work into focused 25-minute sessions with short breaks in between. If
something interrupts you during a session, you have to stop and start that Pomodoro again from the
beginning, which helps you stay fully focused.
W:Has it made a difference for you?
M:Sure,my focus has improved a lot,and most importantly,I now have my evenings back.I'm no longer
stuck in doing homework until bedtime.
W:Sounds like a useful study strategy.Any tips for students who want to try it?
Text10(乡村庭院改造改善项目)
W:Good evening, this is Community Focus.Today,we're looking at a rural community improvement
project in Ningbo in eastern China. The program encourages local people to improve their home courtyards
by planting flowers, repairing old houses and creating pleasant outdoor spaces. Its goal is to make the area
cleaner, greener and more attractive. At first, some residents were unsure about the idea because they were
used to their old way of life. But as the environment gradually improved, the changes became clear.Visitors
began coming to enjoy the peaceful countryside and traditional way of life.Soon, some local families
opened small homestays or cafes for tourists. In this way,the program not only made the area more
beautiful, but also created new chances for families to earn extra income.Today, more residents are taking
part. Many of them now realize that improving the environment while developing tourism, not only
protects nature, but also supports the local economy and brings people in the community closer together.
