When Milton Hershey was 14 years old, he was fired from his first job at a local printing press. When offered a chance back, he turned it down. Instead, he chose to learn how to make candy from a confectioner (糖果商) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Years later, Hershey moved to Philadelphia and, with money from his relatives, started his first candy-making shop, which ended in failure. Then he moved to Denver to perfect his craft (手艺) in a candy company. Later he moved to Chicago to start another candy business, which again ended in failure.
By 1883, Hershey had started working for a candy company in New York City. Finally, he was able to build his own brand called Hershey’s Fine Candies. Within two years, sugar prices went up and he ended up losing his candy-making machinery.
Hershey returned home, but his relatives refused to lend him any more money. He found one of his former workers and together they came up with the money to start another candy-making business, the Lancaster Caramel (焦糖) Company. Drawing on his past experience, Hershey knew what worked and what didn’t and decided to produce different types of caramel. By 1893, the Lancaster Caramel Company had opened factories in many different places. It had more than 1,000 workers. The Lancaster Caramel Company was thriving, but in 1900, Hershey sold it for one million dollars in order to focus only on his chocolate company.
In that same year, Hershey introduced the Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar to the world. It was mass-produced (大规模生产) and sold for only a few cents. Before Hershey, only the rich and powerful could enjoy this treat. Now Hershey’s chocolate company is worth nearly ten billion dollars, making it a leading American company.
24. What led to Hershey’s failure in New York City?
A. The rising price of sugar. B. The breakdown of his machines.
C. The poor quality of his products. D. The failure of earlier businesses.

A new video is widely shared across TikTok: the cookie challenge. Two adults and one young child each have a covered plate in front of them. When the covers are taken away, the child has two cookies on their plate, while one parent has one cookie and the other has none. The big question is: will the child share his cookies with his parents?
Such a challenge about sharing isn’t just about giving something away; it includes considering the needs and feelings of others. Children have to realize they have more cookies than their parents, control their desire to eat the cookies immediately, and understand that their parents also want a treat. Research shows that children develop these skills over time. So, if a child doesn’t share, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re selfish.
For children, sharing something valuable like a delicious cookie seems harder than sharing green vegetables. The taste of a cookie makes it harder for kids to fight their desire to keep the cookies they want for themselves. However, that doesn’t mean children think it’s fair to keep the extra one. This could be why we see some videos where the child takes the cookie from one parent and gives it to another.
Children can notice their parents’ feelings easily. Hearing their parent express sadness at not having any cookies causes the child to feel something. The parent’s disappointment leads the child to notice there is a problem. However, young children may not realize the parent wants a cookie without being guided. Preschoolers (学龄前儿童) often have trouble thinking about what others are thinking. These children can be taught to place themselves in their parents’ shoes to understand that their parents want a cookie as well.
Outside of the challenge, parents can encourage their children to build sharing behavior. Researchers have found that playing games like sharing toys and taking turns can help encourage good behavior over time and have long-term benefits.
28. What does the explanation in paragraph 2 stress about sharing?
A. It is a result of personal habits. B. It tests kids’ developing abilities.
C. It is about making a quick decision. D. It commonly happens among adults.
29. Which explains a child’s act of giving a parent’s cookie to another?
A. The fear of punishment. B. The wish for connection.
C. A guess about parents’ plans. D. A certain understanding of fairness.
30. What can help encourage children to share?
A. Showing clear expectations. B. Setting strict game rules.
C. Explaining the benefits. D. Offering nice gifts.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To explain the trouble of sharing snacks. B. To suggest some creative family activities.
C. To discuss the popularity of cookie challenges. D. To explore children’s sharing behavior more deeply.
D
Portugal has been suffering from increasingly hot, dry weather. This weather has caused many large wildfires. Over a long period, the country has lost nearly half of its forests. What’s worse, more than half of the burned areas are on steep slopes (陡坡), so it’s almost impossible to replant trees by hand. This challenge worried many people, but two young people, Marta Bernardino and Sebastião Mendonça, decided to find a solution.
They grew up near Lisbon and spent their childhood exploring the nearby woods. They felt sad when they saw the forests burned by fire again and again, and they wanted to do something. A few years ago, when they were still high school students, they started to make their first robot with reused parts and waste materials. The simple machine only cost a little money, but it could plant young trees much faster than humans, and most of the young trees it planted could live! Early success helped them reach the final of National Geographic’s 2024 Slingshot Challenge, and they got some money to improve their design.
Now, their invention, called Trovador, is a four-legged robot that looks like a dog. It is made of light materials to protect the soil that was harmed by fire, and it is equipped with cameras, AI and GPS. This helps it walk safely on steep slopes, check the soil before planting, work for a long time on a single charge, and plant many young trees every hour. When it is ready, Trovador will be put on the market, and users can choose planting areas through an app. The research team will next work to enable it to travel farther and expand (扩大) its operational areas.
Small steps taken day by day can finally bring amazing changes to the whole world. Marta and Sebastião’s robot is not just a machine — it gives hope to make Portugal’s forests come alive again, one tree at a time.
32. What did Marta and Sebastião try to do?
A. To regrow forests. B. To fix slopes.
C. To clean pollution. D. To stop wildfires.
33. What do we know about the first robot?
A. It cleared burned trees. B. It was expensive to make.
C. It won a national competition. D. It was made of recycled materials.
34. How will the engineers improve Trovador?
A. By widening working coverage. B. By increasing its working time.
C. By cutting down on its weight. D. By building it in smart technology.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Dangers of Wildfires in Portugal B. How to Get the Youth to Protect Nature
C. A Robot Brings Hope to Burned Forests D. How to Fight Wildfires with Modern Tools

How to Avoid Catching a Cold
How many colds do you catch in a year? Most of my friends catch quite a few colds. They cough and sneeze (打喷嚏). 36 Their eyes water, and they have throat discomfort.
I don’t get many colds. In fact, I can go for a whole year and never catch a cold. That is why I consider myself knowledgeable about preventing colds. 37
One effective way to keep colds away is to take plenty of vitamin C. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and drink fruit juice regularly. 38 Whenever I begin to feel a cold coming on, I double down on vitamin C pills and orange juice, which usually knocks the cold out of my system quickly.
39 In winter, many buildings are shut up tight, making the air not fresh and allowing illness to spread easily. I make it a habit to get outside for fresh air every day. Also, if someone coughs or sneezes without covering their mouth in front of me, I hold my breath for a moment to avoid breathing in germs (细菌). Besides, washing hands thoroughly is necessary since many germs spread through touch — whether it’s stair handrails, door handles or money, I always wash up before eating.
If you pay a little attention to these details, you can avoid most cold-causing germs. 40 It’s not always possible to keep away from colds, but if you do catch one, remember to drink plenty of water, juice or milk and get enough rest.
A. I also take vitamin C pills daily to get extra nutrition.
B. Here are some practical tips I’ve learned to prevent colds.
C. They carry around paper and blow their noses all the time.
D. Getting close to nature further improves your ability to stop colds.
E. Even with these ways to avoid colds, you might still be at risk sometimes.
F. Drinking warm tea made from plants is popular to reduce cold discomfort.
G. Protecting yourself from air and surfaces causing illness is another key step.

第二节 读后续写(满分10分)
I had always been weak in English writing. My articles were filled with simple sentences and all kinds of grammar mistakes, so I often got low marks in every English exam. Every time the teacher handed out exam papers, I would quickly cover my paper, afraid that my classmates would see my terrible scores. Watching them get high marks without much effort, I felt deeply upset and helpless. Little by little, I even made up my mind to give up English writing completely.
Luckily, my English teacher soon noticed my bad mood. Instead of blaming me for my poor performance, she stayed after class and talked with me patiently. She told me that valuable progress never comes in a short time, and sticking to daily practice is the most useful way to get through all kinds of difficulties. Her warm words brought me a little hope again.
Encouraged by what she said, I decided to make a real change. I bought a thick notebook to write down beautiful sentences and useful expressions from Reader’s Digest every day. After finishing my schoolwork, I rewrote my compositions again and again. Each afternoon after class, I went to her office and handed my revised articles to her to correct all my mistakes. I reviewed these marked points every night to avoid making the same errors next time.
However, two months of steady hard work did not bring me better results. Staring at the disappointing paper covered with red lines, I lost all my confidence once more. I could not help wondering if all my time and effort meant nothing at all.
One afternoon, I wandered into my teacher’s office with tears welling up in my eyes. I told her honestly that I planned to give up English writing, because my daily practice failed to bring satisfying scores and left me discouraged. My teacher comforted me patiently and pointed out my silent progress in grammar and expression that I had ignored. Encouraged by her warm words, I adjusted my study methods. I sorted out all my writing mistakes, memorized useful sentences, and revised my old compositions over and over again. I kept practicing steadily, hoping to make real progress step by step.

第四部分 写作
第一节:
Dear Chris,
Learning that you are set to shoot short videos to present authentic Chinese daily life to foreign friends, I’m writing to share some detailed suggestions.
First of all, I suggest you record ordinary people’s daily routines, such as morning exercises in the park, family dinners and street market scenes. These common scenes are close to real life and can help foreign friends get a genuine understanding of Chinese people’s life. Besides, it is advisable to include traditional daily customs like making dumplings or drinking tea, which are unique cultural elements and can make your videos more attractive and distinctive.
I would appreciate it if you take my suggestions into consideration. I’m looking forward to watching your wonderful works.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节:
Months later, the city-wide English examination arrived. Sitting in the exam room, I felt a mix of nervousness and expectation. When facing the writing task, I felt worried at first, fearing I might make stupid mistakes. However, all the skills and expressions I had practiced hard came to my mind naturally. I organized my ideas logically, finished the composition smoothly and checked every sentence carefully. After the exam, I felt unusually peaceful and confident. When the results came out, I was delighted to find my writing score improved greatly. I learned that constant perseverance is the key to progress, and no sincere effort will ever go to waste.

Text 1
M: Hey, is our computer science class still on Mondays and Tuesdays this year?
W: No, there’s a change. Now we have both periods back-to-back on Thursdays. (1)
Text 2
W: Hey, you’re back from the movie. Did it make you scream and cover your eyes?
M: Not at all. Actually, some people laughed out loud. But to me, I’d rather watch paint dry. (2)
Text 3
W: These are all the cups from our latest collection. The white ones are 4 dollars each, and the red and orange ones are 5 dollars each. (3)
M: I don’t see any difference except for the colors.
W: Well, the brighter colors are more expensive to produce.
M: That makes sense. I’ll take one of each color, please. (3)
Text 4
W: Today’s music is perfect for this exercise.
M: Yeah! I’m not even tired yet. Everyone else on the machines seems to be enjoying it, too.
W: We should stick with this playlist going forward.
Text 5
M: Chicken sandwich again? I’ve had chicken sandwiches for lunch three days straight!
W: Honey, at least I change the fruit every day.
M: Fair enough. Can you pack extra strawberries today? I want to share them with my classmates.
W: Sure thing. I just finished washing all the strawberries anyway.
Text 6
W: Tom, you’re 25 minutes late. What’s your excuse this time?
M: I know this sounds crazy, Ms Roberts, but I wore mismatched shoes. I didn’t notice that until I got on the bus. (6) I had to go back home to change my shoes.
W: Well, at least they match now. But seriously? How did you not notice?
M: I was rushing because I woke up late, and my room was dark…
W: I suppose that’s unusually honest. Here’s your late pass. (7) But Tom, if you’re late again this week, we’ll need to call your parents.
M: It won’t happen again, Ms Roberts! I will get my clothes ready the night before.
Text 7
M: This garden looks out of place in our time.
W: You’re right. This is a famous old garden rebuilt by the government.
M: Really? How did they know what it looked like before? (8)
W: From old maps and photos. They mainly checked a map from 1910 and dug around to find the old roads and stones. (8)
M: Cool! It is perfect for taking photos.
W: That’s what we’re planning to do this weekend. Want to join us?
M: Sure, I’d love to! But I don’t have any traditional clothes for the photos.
W: Don’t worry about it! As long as your style fits the setting, it’ll be great. (9) After all, what matters most is enjoying the experience.
Text 8
W: Hi, Tom! I’ve heard you were working on short dramas in China.
M: Yes! It was really interesting! We just filmed a short drama in 10 days, and it includes 90 five-minute videos! (10)
W: That sounds very fast!
M: Yes, exactly. We didn’t need much — just two good cameras, two good screens to check, and one or two lights. But the final product turned out great.
W: Who is the short drama for?
M: It’s primarily for people from English-speaking countries. We filmed in China because Chinese filmmakers are experts in making short dramas. (11)
W: I can’t wait to see it. Will I need to pay to watch it?
M: Yes. The first 10 videos are free, and then you need to pay 1 dollar for each video or 20 dollars for the whole story.
W: Sounds like a good business model.
M: It’s quite challenging. I learned that only about 5% of producers make a hit, 10% to 20% manage to break even, and the rest end up losing money. (12) But the experience was wonderful! I learned a lot about quick production methods.
Text 9
W: Hello! Are you the one who asked about our summer school?
M: Yes! I love building design and want to learn about the city of Berlin. Which course should I join?
W: We have a course called “On Water” that’s perfect for you. You know, Berlin has many rivers and waterways that are very important to the city. So, we offer a course focusing on how water influences Berlin’s buildings and city planning. It runs from July 19th to August 1st. (13)
M: That sounds great! What will we do there?

Hello, team! As we prepare for the busy back-to-school season, I want to share our new plans. September is always our busiest month. Students from all over the country are returning with their families to celebrate a new school year at our restaurant. Here’s what we’ll do: First, we’re ordering twice as much food this week — especially chicken, corn, and green vegetables for our popular soups and salads. (17) Second, we’ll start making more sauce every morning before we open. Third, we’re adding two workers for each dinner service. They’ll work in the kitchen and also serve tables, helping out wherever we need them most. (18) If you need time off for family reasons, please tell me by this Friday so I can plan properly. Most importantly, let’s keep things personal. We’ll prepare welcome signs for large families and serve their drinks right away. (19) Even when we’re serving 200 people instead of our usual 100, every family should feel at home. Let’s make this our best season yet!
